That great news to hear about old school Penn. When I got my first Penn when I was 14 years old and bought 155 penn start learn to cast wit 155 penn. Sometime I get backlash try take line out and fix it all back together wit out cutting line. Lol.. The more I really love 145 and 140 Penn. When I was 16 years old. But now in 2019 and still use my old school Penn.

i got a long beach 65 for 5 dollars, not mint but pretty good and no damage, got a rod i found from the side of the road about 8 months ago and put a new eyelet on it, got a pretty decent about 8 dollar combo.

The Penn 140 Squidder gears can be used for an increase from 2.5:1 to 3.3:1, and might as well install Carbontex drags in the process. That’s what I’m doing with the Penn 60 my pop got me in the mid 60s, anyway. Even without mods this reel spins real true, and the original drags still work very well. That includes 2 trips to the Sea of Cortez, at 2 1/2 weeks each time. No real big fish but lots of Sierras and white sea bass with others mixed in.
I can remember wanting to upgrade all my penns.. with tiburón kits and more ..
I had one just like that I lost. It did me good when I had it.

I have a Penn 209 that I got over 20 years ago it is a 60s model far as I can tell from looking across the internet. Just wondering what type of line and rod setup would be good for catfishing this reel.

We have spooled multiple 209 with the 60# hollow core braid and top shot with like 30yds of of 100#...

No worries glad you asked.. what we do is splice in 60lb Hollow core braid to 100lb Hollow core braid so that way you can have a little bit more abrasion resistance as well as more stopping power with that braid when it counts near the boat or docks..
