  • Shell Busey shows you the proper way to paint stucco.
An elastomeric-type coating will fill in minor hairline cracks and provide a breathable, waterproof protective coating. Also consider radiant heat gain from the sun when you choose your colour. The lighter the colour, the more reflective the coating becomes. If you want to lower the heat gain on the west or south-facing side of your home, choose a lighter colour.

You need to prep stucco prior to applying elastomeric coatings, paint or repairs. Elastomeric needs to bond to the stucco and a good cleaning with TSP mixed in a sprayer along with a good stiff nylon broom, just spray water on the stucco and spray the TSP on the wet stucco and brush with the broom and you'll see the dirt kinda foam up, then rinse with either a garden hose and nozzle or low pressure power washer. You'll notice that the TSP will dull the old paint which is a kind of etching which will allow the new coating to bond well. If you don't get it right the first time you'll have to remove the elastomeric because if a little moisture gets under it, it will separate from the dirty stucco. Trust me, it can turn into a nightmare.

This is what I do... I'm not telling anyone else what to do...
I live in New Mexico (US) and 80% of our houses are Stucco.
I started "Flipping" house when I was 20 years old!!! My parents had a little stucco house that burned... They said I could have it if I paid the Taxes... I did... Times were hard and I hand painted/ with a roller EXTERIOR Walmart Paint ... it was cheap and I thought later down the road I'd repaint it with a better paint. I didn't have to...
That house was painted in 1975 and it still has the same paint on it to this day (I sold the house after I had refurbished it about 5 years later)
NOW... That is ALL I ever use is Walmart Exterior Latex Paint...
I have "Flipped" 17 houses or RVs and Travel Trailer and YES I painted the RVs and the Travel Trailer with the Walmart Exterior Latex Paint...
I STRIPPED the paint of f first on the RVs and the T.T. and made sure it was very CLEAN using 1 oz of Awesome to 16 oz of Water.... (find that at the dollar store)
I have repainted many stucco houses... and at the age of almost 69 I'm getting ready to paint another house... (I thought I was retired)
and YES I will always use Walmart Exterior Latex Paint... and this time it is going on not a cheap house but a little bit more expensive house almost $300,000.
I am saving between $5000. to $6000. to paint it myself... it is a big very TALL house... The biggest one so far.
Walmart Exterior Latex Paint FLEXES... and can handle extreme heat and cold... I have never had a problem with it yet... I have even Painted Refrigerators too... inside and out... looked brand new...

Great video! I am building a new home near Fort Collins, CO and given the expansive soils I would like to use your product for my exterior stucco application. However I read that the rubber in elastomeric coatings can degrade if exposed to high levels of UV. This is the case in Colorado where the climate is dry and very sunny. Is your elastomeric product the wrong one for my application?

I am considering painting my stucco; however, what will I have to do to the stucco 10-20 years down the line if I need to re-stucco? Won't it be a mess stuccoing over paint?

You would have to sandblast it, but only in extreme cases would you ever need to re-dash your stucco. If your stucco has cracks address it before you re-coat with paint.

You can’t sandblast due to possible lead or asbestos in it

pro secret # 1 don't ever paint stucco. if you do, you will kill the most important functions for the longevity of stucco, and that is being able to breath. paint will block moisture from quickly evaporating from the stucco and eventually you will have remove all of the stucco and and possibly have to repair sever water and mold damage. Any building with stucco on it, will immediately start to deteriorate with the first rainfall after it is painted. be prepared for a life time of maintenance if you paint your stucco. you can change the color of stucco without paint. ask a pro stucco tec in your area

You have no idea what your talking about, stucco homes have been painted for decades with out problems, you don't restucco a home when it needs color change makes no sense your theory it's an old fairytale.

Never caulk stucco!..if you're not a solid plasterer/renderer then call one and just get them to take care of the job, it'll be more cost and time effective and you'll end up with a job done well which translates too...a job well done 😂
