Why Leveled Readers Don’t Work and What to Use Instead

    I find them too hard as well. My daughter is 5 started to learn to read at 4 and we the only thing that works are Bob Books cuz they are phonetic based. We've gone through couple boxes of Bob books already and will going strong. We use them in conjunction with Explode the Code.

      Thanks for mentioning Explode the Code. I don't use it, but I have seen others use it with success (Jenny uses it with her girls). I am glad the Bob Books are working for your daughter!

      We don’t do any Abeka Language Arts EXCEPT that I buy the readers and go through them sequentially. They’ve met mu daughter’s interest and reading level perfectly.

      A great idea to use readers from the Abeka curriculum.

    Maybe the problem is how you're teaching phonics! Letters don't make sounds. Sounds have spellings - and in English they have multiple spellings. If you (or your school) have taught them a broken code like the one you're using as you 'sound out' Iron Man of course it's too hard. You need to turn this on its head, not why leveled readers don't work but why are kids unprepared for leveled readers!
