A Poor Mans Arri - Panasonic BS1H

  • I recently bought the BS1H and in the run-up realized nobody has made a video just saying what the camera is and how good it is. So here's me rambling about the Panasonic BS1H.
    Want to know how it's rigged check out my video here: • Rigging The BS1H - Pan...
    BS1H: amzn.to/3oMDK23
    What the video is shot on (Panasonic S5): amzn.to/43jAGt8
    Apologies for the peaking, atleast you can hear me, just turn your volume down x.
    *no hate to millennials (I am one) just addressing all the random complaints people complain about but its a cinema camera, it is what is.

    Hey, this was an awesome review. Great title! I personally have the BGH1. Love the form factor, and it looks more professional than the highbred cameras. I know it has drawbacks, but what can you expect for the price point. I personally think the power to get most out of a sensor is what’s put in front of the lens. For example, location, lighting, sound and talent. If you have that in place this camera will take your imagery further

    I’m sticking with the S1H. If the NS1H had fixed output latency, I’d have switched, but it’s bad on both cameras, and still bad on the S5II (and S5IIX). REALLY hoping Panasonic fixes that on their next box camera

    • @samebdonfilm
      @samebdonfilm  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll be totally honest there's no latency I've noticed so far that would be a worry, its the same as the URSA Mini Pro G2 so realistically to me isn't an issue. - cameras are brill but if you need it to be instant then I do not blame you! Works well for me :)

    • @ForestCinema
      @ForestCinema ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@samebdonfilm The Panasonic cameras baseline at 7-9 frames of delay at the port. That stacked with wireless can put things near half a second of delay. If we’re comparing to an Alexa (which I’m fine with, they’re shockingly good cameras otherwise,) that makes pulling focus as a 1ST AC extremely difficult. By the time a subject has shifted, you’re already behind and out.

    Beautiful images. I have the S5 myself and loved the bgh1, so i'm thinking about picking up one of the BS1H mainly for the form factor (*cough* client optics *cough*). The only thing that kills it for me is the lack of an on-camera monitor, which I wouldn't miss if I could transmit the menu over HDMI when shooting raw. Have you felt like that's hindered you at all?

    • @samebdonfilm
      @samebdonfilm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! And I’ve found that 10 Bit 422 internal has been more than enough for me so far, and after shooting with the S5 it’s just become what I’m used to, obviously it’s great to have Raw but if I’m completely honest the dynamic range and the amount of data captured in the internal recording is more than enough for me most of the time :) most projects I go on want it shot in 422 as well so means life’s pretty chill - it will also shoot in AVC-I (I believe it’s that) which is what Netflix needs if filming for them. So that’s another lil comfort blanket. Hope this all helps!

    It’s no more a poor man’s Arri than your forkrophone is a poor man’s Neumann M 49 V. That said, the best camera, is the one you have, and from your brief clips it looks like you are putting that camera to good use. So good on you!

    How's the HDMI lag/latency? looking into getting one of these, but worried about the latency. Is SDI better for this (no lag/latency) and do you get camera menus through SDI? Not much info on this camera anywhere :(

    • @samebdonfilm
      @samebdonfilm  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hi Dennis,
      HDMI is pretty spot on, some lag through SDI. If you are sending wireless that way, when it comes to playback the sdi shuts off and you can only playback via HDMI (daft coding that is) but I found if using for commercial gigs HDMI is best then that's all sorted, you can get menus through SDI but once again SDI turns off if you hit playback so you have to go back into settings on hdmi to change it. also if you are shooting raw to a monitor you get a clean feed by HDMI so can't access the menus (also daft, but 422 10Bit is actually phenomenal). Its a Alexa Mini LF without the mental price tags but a few puzzle pieces to solve, I love it and it's honestly been amazing.

      @@filmerdennis I can for sure Highly recommend it, I think with having the option to go prores raw to, you can't complain. End of the day if something Huge comes in with a massive budget you'll be renting anyway but when a camera can output what the BS1H can you are perfect for any scenario!

    • @kurencee
      @kurencee ปีที่แล้ว

      @@samebdonfilm yes, shooting in z log means you cant underexpose, you have to overexpose by 2-3 stops and the camera allows you to upload luts so you can monitor it properly, it threw me off at first but now i understand it, im not sure about now but older Sony cine cams were the same way. IMO Panasonic's colors are fine and its faster for quick turnaround times compared to other cameras like Blackmagic and Z cam. I used to use an S1H and I never had to color grade anything.

    Do you think there's a noticeable enough difference in image quality compared to the S5? Does the OLPF make a difference? Or is it mainly the cinema form factor that's appealing to you?

    • @samebdonfilm
      @samebdonfilm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! It’s a mix of the OLPF, with Opengate 6K and you have SDI plus Timecode so when DOP’ing on jobs, it makes life way easier with sound as they can just hand over a tentacle sync etc. not the only reason but it helps! I’d honestly recommend the S5 as the best for going from beginner to pro and it’s now my main B Cam always and on smaller jobs the A Cam, just works beautifully. IBIS is great in the S5 too and sometimes blows me away with how smooth it gets and you don’t have that on the BS1H so there’s ups and downs. But S5 with some promist and a vnd you’d be laughing image is virtually the same - well it is the same as they both have the same sensor lol just the BS1Hs internal processor can pull 6K from the sensor internally whereas the s5 needs a recorder to do it. - hope that makes sense and apologies if it’s a slight ramble! Both are amazing and I love them!
