Hello Gus and Woody, This is Fabio from @HarborsUnknown thank you for watching our video and for your very nice comments. I was just in the right place at the right time and feel very fortunate for the opportunity to help avert a potential fatality. Fakarava is an atoll in the Tuamotu, French Polynesia, great diving sites for the grouper spawning and the wall of sharks. Thank you for your input and expertise in explaining how the rebreather works. Congratulations on your channel.
You did a great job Fabio, saved a life there for sure, well done. I worked as a diver for years and had a few saves I had to make, none quite like that one though. I hope the lady thanked you eventually.
@DiveTalk: This comment should be pinned...
You are a hero bro! Amazing job!!
Well done Fabio, well done
Nice work on saving a life, Fabio! 😊
THE PINK SHOES ARE EVERYTHING ✨
"Fakarava" - Woody: "fu***rama" because of spawning fish party. 😂
Two thumbs up to Fabio, and also the woman's dive buddy (husband ?) and the "big boat", and everybody else involved in this ultimately successful rescue ! 👍👍
Gus was like wait a min! 😭He’s so worried he’s gonna offend people in almost every video. It’s hilarious but I understand completely. I’ve never really been interested in diving but they make it fun and interesting to learn about dive safety and rescue. The risks are insane but I see the appeal.
This comment is EVERYTHING 😂
Woody, please DO NOT stop being YOU. You two are just such a treasure to watch even though I never had ANY experience. What is such a pleasure to watch you two is your absolute passion & not hiding both your personalities. You guys are one of my top favorite channels. Keep it going, keep doing what you two do
I love Woody’s love for pink!! Keep rocking it Woody- pink looks awesome on you! Love you guys! 💕
I was going to say that woody rocken them pink kicks 🤙
Fakarava Island is a French Polynesian Island. Fakarava means “Beautiful” in Tahitian. Good work by all involved and glad they had the necessary equipment to stabilize her.
I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure Woody is spot on with his pronunciations.
I loved the joke Woody. At least the two of us were thinking the same thing 😂😂😂
The fact that he saw that from so far away is amazing. Great job!
He's probably been on the water a ton and has a trained eye for whats not normal looking. The brain is funny that way.
That guy is a hero and he explained what happened so humbly and calm, great video. Woody needs help though lol
Wow, Fabio to the rescue (and hats off to the other gent keeping her afloat in the water - plus the chap with dreads that dove in and everyone else involved)! Just shows you how important that surface lookout is, I'm incredibly impressed at his diligence and eyesight, spotting that hand poking out so far away, his quick response and life-saving actions. Well done to all involved! Also love that Dive Talk is the antithesis of misinfo on diving, just telling hard facts & promoting safety!
Biggest part of all of this is HE WAS PAYING ATTENTION!! Props to you man
What a wonderful rescue. I LOVE when you get to react to "wins" as it were. So glad everyone was in the right place at the right time and didnt hesitate.
Thanks for sharing and reacting to our video guys! The more people that can learn from this experience the better. Thanks also for the clarification on the rebreather system!
I haven't dived, but watching Dive Talk channel I get the feeling that I am now more educated about diving than those who dive with single tank in caves and which are later picked up by Edd Sorenson.Love this channel.
Awesome commentary. So glad Fabio was there and was able to remain calm and help them without harming himself. I also liked the explanation of a rebreather. I now understand how they work.
You guys are like the Laurel and Hardy of the diving world I love you both❤.
😂 I looked at the thumbnail and saw Guss rubbing his eyes and shaking his head while Woody had his pink sneaker up. I knew I had to check in😂. Another great video guys love it❤
Great job Fabio + everyone else who pitched in to salvage such a serious situation. Woody I loved your joke / Gus's reaction also - you guys rock 👊
Such an amazing story. They were absolutely meant to be there and save lives. I love that so many rallied. Cool video, guys!
So many people don’t realise that drowning is a “ quiet” thing. Not all this splashing and screaming that we see in the films.
How interesting to see someone 100% on top of the situation. Thanks for covering this very good news! Merry Christmas! 🎁 🌲🎄
This was great. He did a fantastic job. Fakarava looks beautiful. Thank you Gus and Woody. ❤️🥰
Love you guys! Woody, I love your shoes! Are those the ones your kids got for you? What an amazing video, that gentleman's quick thinking really made a difference.
Wow, Gus has lost a lot of weight. I’m really happy for him, and those are some awesome pink shoes you got there Woody ❤. You guys always put out 🔥 content.
Now all I want to see is a compilation video explaining the different ways I can get someone who is in full scuba gear, out of their gear, and out of the water that is unconscious. Stuff I am finding doesn't really cover this worst case. Seems like everything points to having two people on the boat to lift the person out of the water?
Doing anything to remove gear is critical especially if you are alone. Gear can be replaced. Most folks are not inclined to just cut away thousands of dollars of gear from someone they dont know. Nervous about getting sued maybe?
The other issue, if you are not familiar with the gear and cut the wrong thing, it could make things worse. If he knew how, best thing would be inflate the BCD all the way and hope they have their weighting right.
You might hear that a lot on Dive Talk :)
I recommend tacking a diver stress and rescue course along with a CPR/AED first aid course.
In my rescue course we learned how to take gear off an unconscious diver while maintaining breathes. We also learn how to get divers out of the water using different methods. I definitely recommend the rescue course to EVERYONE.
You dont need to cut anything, but Fabio wasnt familiar with the kit, no fault of his. You should be able to unbuckle the scuba kit or rebreather from the boat, then it's just the weightbelt if necesarry. @@YukonSeanHolland
Great job to everyone that was there, especially Fabio and great explanation of the rebreathers, guys. Thanks.
You should find those divers and interview them, would be interesting to know what happened, especially rebreather near misses are important to be analyzed. (I admire Gareth Lock's work on that). Fatal RB accidents rate is 100x that of OC. RB safety would be also a good DiveTalk topic I believe.
Fakarava is in French Polynesia, this grouper spawning event is once a year at night, in an atoll mouth at high tide with strong currents into the blue.
@Navy1977, the numbers on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebreather_diving#Risk might be a bit dodgy... Wikipedia 🙄. So, I checked recent DAN estimates, and there are 180-220 dive fatalities per year, with 20-25 on CCR. Considering there are only ~20-30k CCR divers and over a million OC divers, a guesstimate puts the death rate at 1.8-3.8 per 100,000 CCR dives, while OC is below 1. Therefore, the accident rate is approximately three times higher for CCR compared to OC.
Those are legit some nice shoes Woody. Bless ya both for providing us with great educational content.
i saved a Venezuelan baby's life in Colombia... I was talking to a Venezuelan couple... their baby was in a pram... the pram suddenly started rolling down the sidewalk towards the road.. a car was coming.. i grabbed the pram and stopped it going into the road. I havent had many opportunities in life to do a good thing, but I'm glad I got to save at least one life during my life. Obviously I dont know if the baby would have definitely died, but im pretty sure if i hadnt stopped the pram it would have been hit by the car.
Awesome!
hi guys a big shout out from my home town Mount Gambier Sth Australia. Gus i just re watched a video from 2 years ago and noticed how much weight youve lost since then congrats mate glad your both fit and well. be awesome to meet you both if your ever diving this amazing spot in future cheers Mike
just letting you guys know you are keeping my head up with these videos letting me know more about this goal of underwater rescue i want to pursue, and also keeping me in the headspace to focus on achieving this goal. i appreciate you guys greatly and i hope one day we will be able to meet and dive together sometime...
also stellar shoes you got woody i am jealous.
People get on woody about the pink, but Ive heard from the son of Les stroud "survivor man" that pink is a better safety signaling color because some people are colorblind, like the son is, and seeing pink is much easier than orange. So not only is it a fashion statement but it possibly makes it easier and safer for others to spot each other!
Found your channel a couple months ago. Not a diver or swimmer but I find your content fasinating. Keep up the good work and Happy New Year :)
i tried to pull a 220 pound man back on board solo 40 miles offshore in a storm and i could move him out of the water more then to his waste. what hes saying about how hard it is to pull a person onboard is 100% true
What the Fakarava ! Well done Fabio, lifesaver. Beautiful reef as well.
Thanks for this review and tips. I just took the DAN DFA-pro first aid class and look forward to Rescue Diver class next. I want to be prepared with training should I ever encounter this type of situation. More videos and tips like this would be helpful.
"Gus, remember the comments" I love Woody!! 😂😂
You guys need a full podcast and to post the video footage of it. I know you do lives occasionally, but a full podcast with Ed or some of the other top tier divers would be super cool to see and hear….. on another note… Love you guys! Gus you look great, and woody seems to be back to full health! Love the content! Keep it up fellas!
What a great story! It's so amazing to see that he was able to save the life of a complete stranger, it's inspiring and it makes me happy that she's going to be alright!
Never seen that many grouper together in my life
1:38 gus genuinely laughs at woody's funny mispronunciation of fakarava and it's great lol
Are there any plans to bring the podcast back? I miss it so much! I have the old episodes memorized at this point 😂 I loved both of you just sitting down and talking about diving, sharing thoughts, discussing certain topics as well as your experiences. Definitely used to be and still is my comfort podcast!
What a great video, this is an example that in an awful situation great attitude usually bring good results!!
You’re looking good, Gus. Keep up whatever it is you’re doing. And keep putting out awesome content like this. Also, Woody’s joke did make me laugh. It wasn’t that bad.
They are diving in the Fakarava Atoll guys.
Beautiful place ❤
Its been a while since I watched this channel and OMG GUS u look incredible!!!! Congratulations!!! Not only have you changed your life you are changing others lives! This gives me such inspiration! Bravo!!! Makes me want to run through a wall!! WOW
I'm a new subscriber and I think you two are just awsome. I love your videos and the way you are explaining things. Just keep on guys ❤
Awesome! Thank you!
great video guys! Woody, for the record, I love those shoes, they look really cool!
You guys are awesome thanks for the fun antics between you guys - love it
Raises an interesting point on what kit you need on your safety boat. At the minimum maybe have sling loops on anchor points that you can hook people onto. Especially given a multiple casualty situation.
I want those shoes!! Lol and that joke had me DYING 😂😂😂😂 Budump bump!! 💀💀
Brian from SV Delos is the most legendary TH-cam sailor in the game and his boat SV Delos is probably one of the most legendary sailing yachts on the water today
Haha, right away I was going to the comments to say Woody didn’t have anything pink on and then he showed off his new kicks. 😂
They all had such great cooperation, they all were working for the same thing- to help! Great work to everyone, would you guys ever be open to reacting to digging science?
Now hoping to see a @Dive Talk and @HarborsUnknown dive video.Great job Fabio saving that couple!!God Bless!!
My daughter (who is 4) has almost the exact same pair of shoes as woody!!!!❤ Love it!
Awesome vid and info
Good job fabio
I thought the explanation on the rebreather was cool and I work in the forestry industry on heavy machinery and I found out the other day that are harvesting equipment has a rebreather on it. As the mechanic was working on the motor I started asking questions. What's this do? What's that do? And has he started to try to explain it? Everything instantly clicked and I was like oh I watch a program on TH-cam called dive talk where they talk about a rebreathers and diving equipment and this is how it works and he's like. Oh well, that's exactly how the engine and the DEF system works to reduce emissions long story short There's a scrubber system in the exhaust that capture CO2 filters it and then re-injects the nitrox and o2 back into the turbo system to reduce emissions from the engine. And basically recycles the intake air just as a rebreather does trapping the co2 in a filter we change every 10k hours. (Ive seen them explode) its a giant filter element honeycomb style that traps co2... They cost about $12000
I saw this episode on their channel last week. Glad you guys covered it. Phenomenal job in recognizing a problem in the water and the rescue. Kudos!
Have you guys ever looked at the video game Subnautica? It is purely based in being a single diver being trapped in the middle of an ocean and doing what it takes to survive. Managing ways to eat/drink and fix your equipment. There are some fantasy elements to it. But you need to be able to overcome clausterphobia, thalassophobia, and try not to get lost in the twists of the ocean caves before your air runs out. After watching your videos I now realize the impossibily of it because there is no decompression issues no matter how far you dive. But I feel like the team really got the feeling of the fear and panic you might feel diving in some tight situations.
Man I love watching you guys! I’m watching your channel because I want to learn how to dive! Just letting you know I love your content!
Epic shoes woody!! And you said it right, we DO want to see your style! At least I do haha, I also love pink 😊 I want a pair for myself now!
You all should check out a video on underground mine refuge chambers. They use a scrubber system kind of like rebreathers to prolong time you can survive in one in case of a mining disaster
I love those shoes Woody!! Keep thriving my heroes!!
Holly cow Gus looking good! Its been a second since I've seen one of your videos. Keep it up my man.
im just wondering where Woody's obsession's with the colour pink comes from lol
Message me and I’ll send the explanation.
You two guys crack me up because of spawning😂😂. It would be an honor to dive with you guys one day.
Great classic dive talk clip! I love my rebreather, always be cautious
Great "dad" joke Woody! I LOVE it!!! Don't stop joking around, yinz guys rock!
awesome job , nice to see a good outcome. loving the pink trainers 👍
I swear if you guys never got into diving. You probably could have been a duo stand up Comedy show. You guys crack me up sometimes😂
FYI, the dive site is at Fakarava Atoll in French Polynesia. It is the second largest atoll in the Tuamotu, after Rangiroa, and is located 450 km northeast of Tahiti.
Thank you woody, I had the fakarama thought right before you said it. Great minds think alike.
Just met Gus at the airport he is a great guy I can’t wait to see his cave diving adventures soon.
Nice to meet you!
Oh my goodness that would have been been bad, I love Woody’s shoes and octopuses are aliens 👾
Thanks for sharing/making this video, guys, with everything going on in the world, a positive story is like a breath of fresh air. :)
So interesting. Thank goodness for quick decisions or both could have been lost. Where was the boat they were on?
Pink shoes! Woody’s hat and headphones remind me of the “Snoopy” head gear of the Apollo astronauts.
Great video! I think I'm gonna watch it again because it's classic Dive Talk.
these shoes are super fresh man
Been there, it's next to Rangiroa, in the tuamotu archipelago of the French Polynesia
I was ready to be sad about woody not having a fun hat. But I got to see his shoes. So I’m happy.
I saw a Goliath Group in the Gulf of Panama City Beach... I knew they were big, but HOLY HELL were they big @_@
Thank God Fabio's eyesight is so good I don't know how he saw that
I flooded my rebreather at 120 feet or so when the mouth piece came off, took a nice big gulp of whatever. Bailout was just enough for the safety stop. Not a fun experience. Did some cave diving open circuit and always hesitated to think I could ever trust the device in that environment. It was an old ADP Inspiration Classic. The technology has come a long way but those memories always linger...
I once also nearly drowned with my double and stage, when my wing did not keep the air. I tried to inflate, but it immediately lost it. Already in panic I tried to inflate the dry suit, but forgot to close the valve of the dry suit. I swallowed so much water by the time, that I could not keep my regulator in my mouth, spitting it out. My buddy tried to help. When I sunk under water, I thought: that's it, it was calm, I was not afraid, no panic any more. Just peace. I then remember crawling (luckily only 3 m depth in a lake) to the entrance with my regulator in my mouth. I think, that was pure instinct. I got out of water, shaking from the adrenaline and coughing. At home I cleaned the wing valve - I believe, that something got stuck and let the air out. A week later I dove again. Everything worked fine. What I do for my own safety now, as soon as I surface, I close the dry suit valve. It is enough to keep me on the surface, if the wing fails.
I haven’t been able to watch for a while. GUS IS LOOKING FIT!!!!
Gus has lot SO much weight! You need a video telling everyone how you did it! Great job Gus!
Not a diver but I am learning with each video.
The "song" she is quoting is actually a quote from the great mind that was Alan Watts. His lectures are wonderful.
Your videos really made me want to certify for rebreathers. Unfortunately, as far as I am aware of, none of the (vacation) dive shops I have been to so far, had that course
I just have to say I love your shoes so much Woody!! Keep on rocking them 😄🤙🏻✌🏻
He saved their lives! They all had a part. I love it when God puts people in the right place at the right time. ❤
Great awareness video!!
Love the shoes Woody!
0:10 damn it Woody, what are you doing?… oh you’re showing off your pink shoes. 👍 lol
0:36 missed opportunity Woody… sounds like Gus said selling, even though he said sailing.
Rookie… your gotta catch those moments Woody. Your doing great Gus. You too Woody.
On a serious note. Love the channel and reactions. I’m over here having fun. You guys are really funny sometimes. Also, I have a very dark sense of humor because I’m a Marine and I’ve been through some 💩 and once in a while, one or both of you say what I’m thinking. So good job with that.
Again, thanks for making the content and giving me something to do. I posted this in another comment on a different video, but I’m a fairly new scuba diver with only an open water certification working my way up to dive master… I don’t know about going any farther than that just yet but that’s where I’m at.
Also, Woody, you need to give out some tips and tricks like Gus does once in a while 🙏🏻
Hey Guys, thanks again for a great video. Gus, looking trim buddy!
Another reason I think the padi rescue course should be included
In the open water
I had it in Cyprus when I have to race up to stop a student ascending to quick from 24m on a shot line , I was just a safety diver but trained rescue
Woody those shoes are freakin awesome!!
Im with Woody! Fakarava joke was fantastic!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
The most magnificient nature ✨
Gus: Maybe it's called Fakarava because those fish FCK ALOT 💀
