Interesting drilling you got there. Here in Germany I never saw a drilling with this rifle caliber. The only common "roe deer caliber" in old drillings is the "Försterpatrone" 9.3x72R, which is said to have been issued to foresters so that they would only shoot roe deer and not be temped to poach red deer. The rear sight might not flip up automatically because the mechanism has been damaged by a previous owner closing the gun while the rifled barrel was selected, which I was taught never to do; but not all Drillings had this mechanism. I just got my great-grandfathers drilling back from its "100 years inspection", a Suhler drilling in 9.3x74R+12/65. Got the shotgun chambers reamed out to 12/70, chokes adapted for steel shot and a barrel insert in .22 Hornet. Up to date, I took roe deer and nutria with it. Sadly I had to get rid of the claw mount as every new scope has to be hand fitted to the mount, which is very expensive nowadays.
Thank you - maybe they made the 5.6x52R more recently - as I've seen many - but you're right - I had several 9.3x72R as well. I'm working on an adapter so scope bases can work with the claw bases.
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I suspect it could also have to do with drillings for the domestic vs the export market. Don’t know if this exactly what you’re looking for, but EAW produces a claw mount (or Suhler Einhakmontage as it’s known in Germany) adapter. You have to glue it on top of the old mount though, so still not 100% reversible. A reversible adapter could make serious bank here as there are many excellent guns hampered by their antique scopes.
Haven't seen the other side of the drilling but Suhl Drillings (East Germany ???) were quite accessible drillings that are otherwise rather expensive. Had a chance to shoot one - 16Ga / and probably same rifle round as this one. But I thing that i had rifle grip not shotgun stock.
Funny about the round - 9,3x72R was probably king of the rather heated debate between hunters when new regulation that uses bullet energy at 100m, bullet weight and diameter outlawed it from deer hunting. Yes, it fails energy limit at 100m (Eastern Europe rules). And of course, debate was around its ability to reliably kill a deer. And deer in my language is understood as red deer - other local animals have different names without word deer in it - at least those living here for a long time.
So, giving foresters for a time rather strong round shooting big and heavy projectile and expect them not to poach a deer sounds to me like a strange idea. Sort of expecting that blackpowder .45-70 is not good for buffalo size herbivores because it is not smokeless magnum.
I started out at age 10 with a Savage over/under so I have great appreciation for that. Savage was a brilliant engineer. With proper shot placement that .22 Savage SP round would be plenty good enough for deer out to 300 if accuracy is good. A good slug is hard to beat, but the .44 Mag insert would be my first choice.

Usually the front trigger is for the rifled barrel on drilings or other combined guns, mostly it's also a set trigger. If they put in a small caliber "Einstecklauf", the right shotgun barrel is used, so you are able to use the set trigger too.
Okay I have seriously thought of doing this. I eagerly want a drilling for exactly this. Here in the US it makes sense to have one of the good .30-30 and 12 gauge guns or .30-06 or even a .223 gun

I have an old Mossberg bolt action shotgun with sights on it that I use for the chamber inserts. Works very well and I have yet to have a malfunction even using the 22lr insert. Fairly accurate as well.
Same here, but w/ a Braztech (now known as Rossi), which by most snob opinions would refer to as “cheap-o” due to most of these Brazilian imports having some sort of poor quality rep. to them. Well, just as every brand and spec has haters, multiply by 2-3 and those are *factual* number of people who have ACTUALLY owned these guns and can vouch for them. For a company that in 2023 still sells Ruger 10/22 knockoffs (RS22) for $109-$159 and interchangeable single shot combos like yours for maybe slightly less than double, they are what they are!!! Firearms that might be rough at times on the shoulders, have some jamming here and there (when being used regularly especially, and last but not least, “cheap ugly stocks,” *THEY STILL WORK!!!* Which means it’s doing it’s job as advertized, but has to be snobbed because it doesn’t have a Super Grade Model 70 stock for a budget price!! 😂😂
@@portugal5698 I have a Rossi RS22 (Marlin 795 clone) and it has proven to be a really awesome rifle...and I have around 50 different 22 rifles to compare it to. Nothing wrong with the Rossis. The CBC clones are just as good as the rifles they model them after. Also have a CBC nylon 66 black beauty that I love as well.
I have numerous adapters I have been experimenting with over a few years, both smoothbore that I use for "Pistol Caliber Shotshells" as well as rifled ones in various calibers. Some have proved to be useful, others not so much, yet. I handload so that is also part of the equation. In the end, they have all proven to be quite fun to use and I enjoy the testing. Mike.
Reinhard von Meurers book about his chasse libre safaris in Cameroon etc is a very good book to pick up.
He used various rifles with chamber inserts to have more ammo options .
Rifles used was a bolt bull pup .460 Wby and inserts with loose revolver cases primed and sealed , and in front various .452 bullets. For small game at close range in Jungle and rain Forrest .
Iv always loved double rifles and drillings. Never have had the spare funds to get one, but iv got a somewhat old coach 12ga with rabbit ears, that me and my grandfather pulled it all apart and regulated the barrels and put express leaf sights on it when i was 8 years old and its been my deer gun for hunting since and ill be 35 this month so its definitely held up. It will sling a remington slug within 3inches on a paper plate out to 70 yards. As i say its my poor mans double rifle lol.
German here. I am no gunowner, but regularly read german arms magazines. Last year there was an article, about a german guntrader who buys Lots of old german Combination Guns ( Drillinge, Büchsflinten- one shotgun Barrel, one rifle Barrel, and Bergstutzen- two riflebarrels, one large bore, one small bore). A gunsmith(gunmaker) inspects and repairs the guns. The Trader sells the guns to USA. The guns , according to the article, are nowadays affordable for more US citizens than formerly. The guns are all used ( but in good condition) and they are nowadays, compared to 1960s, no more popular in Germany. The change of Farming caused a large Change of hunting Style, so German hunters prefer other rifles. This is the reason, why the noted Trader can buy this No more used guns , compared to former decades, relative cheap. When i remember correct, there must be in USA a collectors group collecting German Hunting- and Schützerrifles, they know this Trader. Perhaps my comment helps.
Most I seem to find are still over $3,000us more than I have to just splurge on a firearm sadly lol. @@brittakriep2938

Hey it's me again Mike. Another entertaining and educational video! I wonder how they happened to pick the 22 High Power. I've never seen anything about the size/weight of Roe deer. I think that 7x57R would make it a little more practical, at least for larger game.
I've never had any inserts like those but I do have a pair of Savage Four Tenners. They're about 15 or so inches long. They have O rings at each end to secure them snugly when you insert them into a break action 12 gauge shotgun. The take 2.5 or 3" shells. A friend and I used to hunt doves with those on a Christmas Tree Farm. The trees were planted in rows 10 yards apart. We would walk between the rows and have about a second or maybe two to get a shot off when the doves sitting in the trees would flush and fly to the next row or over them. We couldn't see very far over the trees because of their height so you had to hit the bird in that first 10 yards unless it got pretty high before it was out of sight. Great Fun!

That last 357 round produced quite the fireball, but the 44 did much bigger fireballs. You could load inserts into both barrels and have a rapid followup, or have shotgun, pistol, and rifle without having to reload, although not sure if you'd have to recock for the 3rd barrel.
The scope attachment was very interesting.
I like to be Chaszel Adapters very nicely made, and you can get them in 5, 7, 11,18 24 inches long, up to 45-70.
Ooooo I want one of those inserts for my Springfield Model 1870 rolling block rifle!

I make 5.6x52r brass for my Valmet 412s from 25-35 Win brass. The 30-30 could be used but you’d probably have to turn the necks on the brass as it’ll too thick.
I watched your video on the Valmet 412 as well. It’s a great gun. I too have the 9.3x74R double barrel set. Amazing how well it shoots.

Thanks for commenting; I know what you mean about fox. I learned from viewers that they get into farms once in awhile and wipe out all the chicken and others. Still, maybe not the most common example. Coyote might be better - although many people love coyotes. Maybe "targets" are safest : ) All the best.

Drillings or combis are really great. The one issue around here is during shotgun, deer season you run the risk of losing the firearm to the ministry, it has a center fire rifle chamber. It should be "permanently" disabled. Either way they are wonderful firearms.

I have a really nice old pair of Zeiss Jena Jenoptem 10x50 Binos made in the DDR. Nothing fancy but great optics from 35/40 yrs ago.

The makers in Liege used to turn out adapters for shotguns since the first breechloading shotguns. Some of the first were in .38-55 for 12-bore guns. I've run across original adapters before but have passed on them. They were all full length and sometimes would have a method of fastening at the bore. There are some good adapters by Chaszel now, and while not full length, they are generally 18" or 24" and utilize the rubber O-rings. There is an outfit in Alaska that makes them, but many many years ago, I asked the simple question if they could make them longer than 18" and the answer I received was very rude and uncalled for, so for those reading, take of that what you will, but I will never personally do business with them. The short ones you have are reasonable for the .45 ACP, as even when going to 18", it will only gain 100fps over a 5" barrel. For the 3.5" insert, the velocity should be in the 750fps range. Slow but big, like the .45ACP always is. Good for the range you were just shooting, but in thick woods, a shot is rarely over 25 or 30 yards. I've always used open sights, no matter what I'm hunting. Anyone can be a good shot with a scope, but few are good hunters, and that is getting close and then 10 yards closer. A guy sitting in a tree stand for deer with a feeder 25 yards away, with a .300 Winchester Magnum and a 24X scope on it tells me all I need to know of whether he's a hunter or not.
Great post - words of experience; one fellow uses the .44 mag insert for all his deer hunting - I'm pretty sure many people would do the same once they buy an insert. Slamming a deer at 35 yards with a 6.5 or 30-06 0r 7 Mag is unnecessary IMHO
I have seen a few video's of people recommending guns for end of world, ITSHTF type scenarios but something like this trumps them all. You can basically use one weapon with the most popular and abundant calibres available. A beautifully made rifle that is so interesting. Thanks for sharing
Good video! I have always thought a "Drilling" is an excellent idea, but the cost is usually prohibitive. Thanks for showing folks the adapters. I own a couple of them.
Nice toy. Thanks for sharing. I read a magazine article, years ago, about a drilling with 12 bore and .303 British barrels, still in Africa.
I have a 1954 Suhler Drilling in 7x57R 16/70 and in the right Shotgunbarrel a full Length Inletbarrel in .22 Hornet till 4 Years Ago it was my go to Rifle for Hunting it belonged my Grandpa which bought it new then my Dad had it several years and now i have it. Till today it holds MOA when you let it cool for 5 Minutes between the Rifleshot the inletbarrel is adjustable infront it is fidly and cost much time but it is worth the time, i still love this Drilling it has so much History in my Family and so many Hunting Expieriences for 3 Generations
It is a Swiss Army Knife for all Roe Red and Wildboar with the 7x57R / Foxes Rabbits for longer Distances with the 22 Hornet when they are closer with the 16 Bore
My Dad had a Gunsmith install the Inletbarrel and a Zeiss Diatal ZM 8x56 with a good Mount

Fabulous combination gun. The inserts are a great addition though I thought that they wound have more barrel length. At close range the barrel sights are probably good enough with the inserts.
Mike, you are good with iron sights. As I have gotten older, iron sights are out of the question. So sad!

I shot all three more in the meantime - easily 100 yard working range - the .44 Mag performed the best - with the .357 close behind. The .45 ACP at 50 yards is about 2" groups. I'm amazed at the accuracy with 3" of rifling - but I guess that's all it takes to get any bullet spinning. Cheers!

Howdy. Interesting vid. Im fortunate enough to own a drilling made by the the same chap. 2 1/2 inch 12g. With 8x57rimmed. Safety on left side and tang barrel selector does pop rear sight up when pushed forward for rifle barrel. Rifle on front trigger.
But if you don’t push completely ford both rifle and right shotgun barrel go off. First time i seen pheasant get ripped in half mid air. At least dog brought the front half back.
And that 175g 8mm flattens pigs.
Thanks for showing us this fun and unique class of firearm. The combo O/U gun of course are quite similiar as you know. The closest thing ive got is an old Brno 7x57R x 16ga O/U but ive never tried or came across adapters for it. Ill have to look for some made for 16ga if possible.
That's a gem - I've seen 16 Ga. adapters - I'm pretty sure more will hit the market soon.
Many years ago my father bought a 22 high power in a 99 with a threaded barrel that held a muffler. Fantastic bit if kit.
Far ahead of the times.
Had the Savage 24V 222 and 20gauge . Took a lot of game with that gun .

Great video once again. I chuckled when I saw the gun as I was looking to buy it but didn’t pull the trigger. I have 4 drillings already so couldn’t justify another. You and I have similar tastes in guns brother!
Wonder if you would happen to have a set of claws for one of my drillings that I could purchase… one of your old videos mentioned you had a lot. I’ve got a 1930s German drilling in 16x16/8x57r that I’d like to add a scope but it didn’t come with any claw rings but has the bases.
Hey - thank you - I had a number of claws and now....2. I'm working on an adapter so a rail or bases can snap into the claw mounts. I'll make a video asap.

Marvelous firearm from the past, but the older I get I find most anything Marvelous is from the past.
it seems that one could have a decent setup for hunting dinner, with the ability to shoot birds, or small game, with just the one firearm to carry (where it would be legal) , but might
also be a good survival gun for boat or aircraft, perhaps...you always have something interesting to talk about, and i find your relaxed and modest manner to be easy and pleasant to follow...i also find that you seem to have commenters with good knowledge, experience, and low-key styles, quite different from some of the macho/freedom/gun-nut commenters on many channels. I appreciate the craftsmanship, the beauty, and function of firearms, without attaching "political" notions to a useful/beautiful tool...if any of that makes sense to you-all? (military dad, who was a "practical" hunter, and had enough wartime experience not to romanticize/glamorize guns; had us shooting from 5 years, even learned how hard it is to shoot a sten gun accurately at 7 years! )

I agree, there is no glamour in death and war; no glory or redemption in violence yet guns are the last stand for freedom - here - or anywhere. They might be some other tool, but those we have not found - for now, for here - guns mean more than most people know. I often think of Auden's words:

Very interesting (as usual). I am assuming that the inserts you used were above the usual quality, given the accuracy you obtained. Drillings are unique in versatility, the only drawbacks being a slow reload, and of course their cost. Savage no longer makes their over/under combo, so aside for a used Savage, one would be limited to a European firearm, and many of those sell for 5-figure prices.
I was under the impression that the majority of European models were chambered in larger calibers - 8mm and up?
That is right. Up to the 1920ies 9,3x72R and 8x57IR were common cartrigdes. The 9,3 was initially loaded with black powder and has not so much
power. These drillings were often very light, under seven pounds. Later the most common chamberings were 7x57R, 7x65R and 8x57IRS. Greetings from Germany.

@missey3164 --- Yes, they can and do. There are about 3 companies in the U.S. that makes cartridge 'inserts" / "Adaptors". One is in Alaska, another is in Georgia, and the 3rd outfit is in another state. The company in the state of Georgia (Chazel? Chasell?) makes a 12 gauge / .45-70 Govt. adapter to be used in break-open shotguns.
There are at least two You Tube videos showing how they function, much like this video from USOG. Lots of options such as shooting a .22 rimfire or a. .38 Special or a .410 shotshell in a 12 gauge or 20-gauge shotgun. One gun but several cartridges. Very nice option for those of us who are not wealthy.
Sometime in the future, I would like to see you shoot the
12 gauge shotshells, and let us know the choke restrictions too. Very interesting firearm, especially the scope mounting system!

German drilling makers made .30-30 , 22 HP and .25-35 (6,5x52R ) the 25 cal you can find more of in Norway/ Sweden . Together with .22HP
. .30-30 ones were shut down well before WW2 .
I would think the adapters would be a little longer to ensure accuracy although I see they do pretty well at that distance. My uncle had 410 inserts to fit a double barrel 12 gauge. It was fun to shoot but it scattered too fast to be very useful.
I picked up a pie pan full of odd centerfire cartridges at a yard sale several years ago. In the mix was a few 22 Savage HP cartridges. Some are pointed soft point, others round nose. Some are head stamped REM-UMC 22 HP, others SUPER-X 22 Sav., and PETERS 22 HP.
Hard to find that ammo - good yard sale! I remember buying a gun or two at garage sales; these days people seem to be different. I see no guns, no ammo - not even old magazines...like Outdoor Life etc...

I used to see guns at yard sales here in upstate New York, too. Not any more. New York has strict gun laws now. It's illegal to buy or sell a gun, ammo or probably even a single round of ammo without going through an FFL.

When I was around 12 or 13 my mother gave me a I believe it was 410 and 22 hornet caliber over and under, does anyone know what makes that gun would be I cannot remember, and I'm especially interested in the 22 hornet, thanks for the info
Very nice rifle. I love the savage chambering which was very popular in europe. I have a Kahles scope which is 3-6 power. I had to have it repaired but when I got it back it is the clearest old scope I ever owned.What part of Canada do you live in? I am near Rochester New York straight across for Toronto.
Those Kanles scopes are excellent - some of the brightest scopes ever were the Kahles Supra. I'm in British Columbia - thanks for the note and good shooting!

If you read this, I've got a question for you. I bought a Sako L579 Forester from Clayton and it just arrived a week ago. I watched your video showing an L579 and a Tikka. I put a Nikon Monarch 3 on mine (1" tube). But I have a Steiner that I feel would be more suitable. It has a 30mm tube. Do Optilock rings fit on the L579's?
Hello - I think so - BTW - the latest Sako has changed the taper of the dovetail so now my box of Sako rings won't fit; unfortunate as I found nothing lacking in the original rings. Oh well. Great rifle BTW - the one you bought; but you know this. Good hunting and shooting!
@UnitedStatesOfGuns Thank you for that information. Yes, you are spot on about the dovetail. I just got a Sako 90 "Adventure" which replaces the 85 "Finnlight 2". There have been changes made to the action including a machined in picatinny receiver enabling the ability to attach any type of rings you prefer.

is it feasible, or useful, to have a longer barrel on those inserts? that fireball out of the shotgun barrel looks like there's an awful lot of powder "going up in smoke"?
Yes - can be done; but convenience and ease of installation etc...would be lost. You're right there likely is some velocity loss - yet - about the same as a pistol; not too bad considering the ranges involved IMHO

I have a Savage 22 HI Power that belonged to my Grandpa.
Still an impressive cartridge - I like it a lot. Your's is a Savage 99? If so - that's a a great combination.
