We only eat out a few times per year and end up disappointed most of the time. I learned how to cook from TH-cam and now I can make pretty much anything we feel like eating for just a few dollars. Copycat recipes are my best friend. Plus, with 5 young kids, eating out is comparable to managing a circus.

I totally agree! I usually look at the amount and quality of the food and say this isn't worth it! We are four kids who prefer home cooking and are picky at restaurants!

Same! Although it’s just my husband and I, I still can’t help but think most of the time “this one meal would’ve been a weeks worth of groceries, and it wasn’t even that good!”

    2. Don't go out to eat
    3. Say no to "extras"
    4. Eliminate Social Media temptations (influencer items for cloting, interiors, etc.)

Cooking from scratch and eating at home saved us big bucks. After a couple of months of eating at home, we ate out and were so disappointed. My family prefers my cooking to that of most restaurants we used to frequent. Win-Win!

We enjoy having Pizza out on occasion at a family owned nice clean quality restaurant they don’t pay for advertising on TV or social media, no tipping is required for dining in and they don’t ask or prompt when paying with credit card, we order pizza at the counter and pick it up when called, it’s a hidden gem within a large metro area!

The plan for my husband and I is to continue the no spend month for November. We attempted to do the no spend month in October which went okay. We've cut our groceries in October from $500 down to $300 so that's a savings of $200. In November our plan is to buy only the staples of groceries that we need and nothing extra.

I had a credit card or two for over 40 years. I now have no credit cards and use a Debit card and quite frankly I couldn't be any happier. Every fortnight I put aside $20 (as I now live on the pension here in Aussie land) into my emergency fund. Small amounts do add up over time and I've been doing this for some years now - even when I was working. I know that once I spend the money it's gone. So even though at times I like to have a spending spree (lego is my current hobby)
I know that when it's time to stop spending, it's time to stop spending and save up the $$$. I also allow myself a small splurge money each fortnight, that I can spend on whatever I feel like guilt free. A great way to go. I no longer require a credit card and quite frankly am glad I don't have one as the credit card debt creep is indeed real even if one pays the balance out each month. You won't know yourself once you cut up the last credit card on just how freeing this really is.

I save by buying in bulk. anything with a long shelf life… especially pasta and pasta sauces, snacks, rice, beans etc. buying it once takes a big chunk but then my weekly groceries are less. Also prepping and freezing some kid items like muffins and pancakes!! I make huge batches on Sunday and it’ll last us all week if not two , in the freezer.

I really am more scared that the prices will get to a point of no return and no matter what you cook, you hope it last for a week!! So grateful my children are grown and gone. It's also handy around christmas time, my MIL uses my wishlist to get me gifts every year

Funny to me that not eating out is considered a sacrifice. Waiting for a table, waiting for water, waiting for the server, waiting for the food, waiting for the bill, feeling socially shamed to over tip, paying to listen to music I'd rather not listen to. We PAY for this?! Eat at home. It's really SO much better.

My dryer broke 13 years ago. I hang everything to dry. I dont miss it at all.
Food wise. I buy larger fresh quantites of fruits and veggies and cut everything up taking out of the plastic containers and place in glass containers. The food stays fresh for a week, eliminating another store run. I cook larger quantities of whatever meat is on sale using it in different types meals for the week. Mark down meats are good as long as you cook it right away.

We just did this last month. Cut down some subscriptions like Disney+ and Hulu because we get Netflix and AppleTV for free. Canceled a YMCA membership we hardly used. Always have shopped at Aldi but after looking at our budget, not eating out and making small changes we're able to save almost 2k a month.

We've done all of those things for decades. What we need as retirement is looking ahead is ways to cut property taxes and all insurances ( home, car, health, life) in half!!! Many seniors end up being "insurance poor" while living very frugally.

    • @desleycasey7412
      @desleycasey7412 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yes insurance is a biggie, even here in Aussie land. When the insurance notice comes in I start shopping around to see if I can get a better or cheaper quote. This has saved me heaps of $$$ over the years. Avoid being loyal to one insurance company or for that matter to one telecommunications company. They all save their best deals for new customers rather than look after their loyal customers. I regularly check to see if I can get my internet or mobile plans cheaper however, due to the rural area I live in, I do have to be careful re this due to potential reception issues. However, I refused to pay the big telcos a cent. They rip people off big time.

I have figured out for myself that if I need only a few things, to just not go to the store if I can figure out other alternatives that I do have at home. The reason for this is, that if I go for 3-8 things, I somehow mentally think oh I can afford to buy (fill in the blank) which means splurging on something I don't really need, and spending more than necessary.

    • @ALinn-vr3nl
      @ALinn-vr3nl ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's a great idea, holding off to stay out of the stores.
Years ago, on the advice of a school friend, to save time, I started running errands on just one designated day per week (Fridays - a weekday - to get both business and personal errands done, and because there's extra time in the evening on Fridays to finish up the errands: no evening meetings to attend.) If I want to go out on the weekends, I go out Saturday night. I wanted to choose a day that could be a lifetime habit. I figured Fridays would be best weekday for the types of jobs I would be doing (office work).
Initially, it was overwhelming to do all the errands on one day, but I quickly learned how to cut down the errands until they were only taking 1 - 2 hours per week (except for getting haircuts and going clothes shopping occasionally.) Having the same designated errand day each week freed up up a huge amount of time, made my life more predictable, organized, orderly, and calm; made weekly grocery planning easier, and saved me a ton of money on car expenses and impulse buys.
Doing errands on Fridays sets me up with cash, gas, and groceries for the weekend and next work week. No more waiting in a grocery line at 6 pm on a Tuesday, or dealing with the weekend supermarket crowds. I can just stay in, cook for the week, and enjoy my weekend. And bike or use public transit to work for some jobs, because I don't need to run errands after work.

I shop almost exclusively at Walmart and Costco. They have great prices, and unless you need some rare specialty item, you can find practically everything. And restaurants have become so insanely expensive lately. We were at the mall walking the other day and saw that one large poutine (Canadian here) was an entire $13 plus tax! That's insane for french fries. Even fast food is ridiculously expensive these days.

Little habits for the win. It wasn’t long ago, I was staring at my shopping list wondering what I could cut. I remember not buying tortillas for months, because I had a ton of rice on hand and I knew I could just turn all those meals into rice bowls. Family was happy. I used to put an item or two in the kid ride area of the cart while shopping to add it in if we had the margin or I could set it aside last min if I already hit my total.

Learn to DIY tortillas. For flour I make up dough, roll into balls, store in fridge up to 1 week. Let warm up at room temp 5 to 10 minutes. Roll out. Each kid can roll their own. So fast and fabulous taste. Costs pennies.

Here are my hacks, apart from what was stated in the video:
    1. Be frugal with toothpaste. You only need a quarter on a toothbrush to clean your teeth properly. Therefore will save $$$ on purchasing toothpaste overall.
    2. Check out the cleaning cupboard. You probably have a whole heap of items to clean your home already stashed away. Use all these first, then reduce your cleaning products to 2 at the outside. White King to clean the bathroom. A lemon boiled in a hot water jug to clean the pipes, especially the kitchen sink pipes. Baking soda will do wonders and save you a ton of money on expensive household cleaners. (Or if you don't want White King try Koh - it will clean all surfaces including floors - tiles or boards).
    3. Turn off the lights. You'll be amazed how much electricity you will save down the track. I use battery operated sensor lights in my home and they also will act as a security feature because if someone univited enters your home, as they pass the sensor lights will turn on. Use solar powered lights outside to light up your home. Again will save on electricity.
    4. Purchase an air fryer oven and you'll be amazed how great everything tastes and cooks in a fraction of the time and you'll save electricity or gas on using a regular oven. (It will pay for itself in the long run.)
    5. Purchase a bean cappachino machine (rather than use pod machines). Again it will save you money down the track. I have 3 mugachinos each money. (2 via my bean cappachino machine and one instant.
    6. Unplug all non-essential items, i.e. lamps, microwave, cappachino machine, milk frother, air fryer, washing machine, dryer and the like. Even when turned off at the wall they chew up residual electricity. Naturally the fridge/freezer has to remain on. Everything else is up for grabs so to speak. Only plug in when you have to use the item.
    7. Install 2 rods in a spare room to hang clothes on coathangers on. Rather than use the dryer. Install a clothes line if have the room and space to hang sheets &/or towels. Why use a dryer when one doesn't have to!!!!
    8. Use the dishwasher if you have to have on sparingly. Well before dishwashers were invented people washed their dishes by hand. Why not try it for a few nights of the week rather than using the dishwasher. Again will save on electricity, as well as, water usage.
    9. Do you really need that gym membership? There's plenty of exercises one can do without the need to go to the gym and pay an expensive membership + the gym outfit at the same time. There's even exercises one can do simply by sitting down and doing them and you'll still feel virtuous that you have completed your daily exercise routine. Or if you're into walking (which I am not) go for a walk around the block. It's free!!!!
    10. Turn off your computer before going to bed. You're not going to use the computer while you sleep so why keep it turned on.
    11. Buy an Oodie (coat blanket) as they are incredibly warm and you won't require to put on the heater in winter. I live in mine. So much so that I have 2. One to wear whilst the other is washed and hanging on a hanger to dry. (Admittedly where I live in Aussie land, we don't get snow. However, I'm sure you can come up with some other type of blankets or clothing to keep you snug and warm during the winter months.
    12. Buy denture tablets. You can buy a box of 40 + denture tablets for a fraction of the price of a cleaner. Great for cleaning the toilet. Also great for cleaning non-stick frypans, milk frothers, coffee mugs, back of plates and the like. Simply toss in a tablet in water and leave the item to soak overnight. You'll be amazed how clean everything becomes. Also great to keep the kitchen sink sparkling.
    In Conclusion:
These are my top 10 household hacks and they stand me in good stead. Even if I do get carried away with having the lights on at times, my electricity bill for the quarter is less than half some of my friends bills.
    Hope this assists.

Shopping strategically also means shopping the sales at more of the "expensive" stores - for example, Publix had Campbell's Cream Of Soups B1G1 last week, so I stocked up. They were 55 cents a can. Walmart brand Cream of Chicken is 68 cents. It's really important to look at grocery circulars because many items WILL be cheaper than Walmart or Aldi when they are B1G1.

Those are great prices. May I ask what part of the country you're in? Even the generics at my store are a lot more for those items. In California. I also can't shop at the big stores like Costco because I have a small kitchen, would take forever to use large quantities, etc.

And to remember it is easy to make white sauce with flour, milk, butter or margarine. Add some powdered soup mix and you've got a can cream soup duplicate for oven baked casserole. Dupe doesn't work in crockpot

Rachel…love your advice. I’m a senior, empty nester who proudly shops at Aldi and Walmart to save money. If I think about your ideas from a kid’s standpoint, they might at first see only negative consequences. What if we offered them a chance to shop for a “fun” food while at the grocery store that they could have as a treat for eating at home? Maybe they like strawberries and would love a home made sundae with a Sunday home meal. Or if they participated in making home meals they could get a boost in their allowance, etc? Hopefully you see my point….make it fun, rewarding for kids to learn to save money. “Teach them to fish…..”

Does anyone here experience ever experience what I call "frugality fatigue"?
I tried to really lower my already very low, frugal spending over the last few months. It was helpful, but too much.
I can't keep doing that, and find I need a break. I just can't focus on working so hard to save every last dime or dollar, mentally or emotionally. I tried to do too much, too soon. I overdid, am drained from it, and feel almost allergic to trying to cut corners so much at the grocery store, or keeping the heat off when I want it on, etc.
Does anyone else here ever experience that? I don't see it discussed in frugality spaces.
