Growing up in the 80’s I was obsessed with this movie. A fantastic action, science fiction, time travel war film with a great cast. Still love it to this day. I highly recommend it!
The scene of the crew were actually crew members no actors, the scene were they used the net in the emergency situation, was actually a real life event, the film crew was fortunately lucky to have captured it on film and so they wrote that event onto the script.
@ Originally. the writer or director had no mention of this event in the script , film crew captured this event on tape , this is where it was incorporated onto the movie
As I understand it, the part where the F-14 does that dive towards the water was the plane running out of airspeed and the pilot recovering just in time. Also, the reason the Tomcats seem to be weaving around so much trying to stay behind the Zeros, I think
At around 330 mph, the A6M Zero wasn't any faster than contemporary US fighters like the Wildcat and P-40 Warhawk. But they were much lighter and more maneuverable. Plus their pilots were experienced and superb fliers. The real quantum leap in American fighter technology came with the arrival of the F6F Hellcat and the F4U Corsair. The Hellcat could fly at nearly 400 mph and was better than the Zero in every performance measurement. The Corsair was even better. And America pilot's skills were beginning to close the gap. And the Japanese couldn't replace those great pilots like the US could.
Not a "fun fact". Real Zeros had a top speed of 330 mph....fast for that point in the war. Of course, these weren't real Zeros. They were North American AT6 Harvards...advanced trainers that could no faster than 200 or so mph. They were dolled up to resemble Zeros for movie production
The premise is something that happened 40 years previously. It's now 44 years after the film was made. The Nimitz is now the oldest serving aircraft carrier in the world. Imagine the improvements in the naval military technology that's on an aircraft carrier today!
Since Hollywood can only seem to do remakes lately I wonder if this one is on anybody's list? If done correctly by a good cast and directing crew it could be a good remake, maybe better than the original.
The difference in our military technology from 1980 to today isn't nearly as much as it was between 1941 and 1980. For example, the now-decommissioned F-14 is, in many ways, better than the FA-18 Hornet that replaced it.
I always used to confuse this movie with that other movie where Tom Cruise was a Navy fighter pilot in the 80's, and then he was a fighter pilot again, almost 40 years later and everyone had aged except him.
Almost 40 years Im on this planet and never heard of this. Im a big fan of war flicks and have never come across this. They gotta stop that particle accelerator because all these mandela effects are blowing my mind.
I posted a Question to everyone, what if a American Aircraft Carrier does go through something like in the Video! The Question is should we Interfere with the Past/History? I think Not
I watched this movie multiple times. When this film came out China was still farming rice fields. I'm sure the CCP studied this film with a million man hours to catch up to us.
ANY(!) intervention, even showing your (1980's) self to any of the IJN fleet or aircraft would change the thread of time irrevocably. Just the report by a returning IJN pilot of far superior US non-propeller aircraft in the vicinity would cause change. What is more, with Nimitz already apparent on the IJN Fleet's radar, Tojo would be forced to engage & certainly when a returning spotter tells him what he assumed was a Battleship turns out to be the largest US Fleet Carrier they knew nothing about(!) Most likely, to retain the IJN Fleet's surprise Tojo would have to redirect one of two man mini-sub carrying attack submarines to try sink it.
Just seeing a giant aircraft carrier and non-propeller aircraft doesn't mean anything. Seeing something doesn't mean you can somehow conjure up the technology to match your enemy. If you saw a UFO today, would you be able to build one soon?
"We need spare parts for the F-14s" "Er" "We need Jet Fuel" "Um" "We need to service the reactor" "Yeah" Yeah this ship is basically useless after 6 months without modern technology 🤡
I believe this is a very controversial movie. To disappear and reappear at a very, most crucial time long remembered to be prevented could start a chane reaction in which the atom bomb was never developed, hence the powered nuclear carrier could drastically disappear again from reality or worst, create a new one. One where nuclear power are used for the better of men kind and not for weapons of mass distruction.

When I was a kid, my brother and I bought this VHS back in the 80’s.
I believe we watched it 46 times.
HOW DID I MISS THIS FILM? F-14's against ZEROs? I'm dying here. Must watch NOW
I’m always in heaven anytime I get a chance to introduce somebody to this movie. It must have released alongside Empire strikes back or something
This is a great movie with great actors.

Did you find it ? I wanna watch it
I remember seeing this at the drive in theater with my parents. It was actually really good for the time and was the first movie to show off the F-14.
The end gave me chills, saw it years ago, but must see it again. Great cast.
We are now further from the film in time than the film was from 1941

Dammit. Why you wanna tell me dat?
OMG that’s depressing…

Best movie ever. Me and my friend Louis went to see it 3 times in grade 8.
I'd have to agree. One of the best movies around.
This movie was fantastic. Only saw it a few years ago. Way ahead of its time
I like that. Way ahead of its time. Good one.
It's a great example of realistic approach to what would anyone do if they could significantly change the past.
My brother and I watched it on television around 1980 and we were basically riveted to the screen.
They should redo this story with modern CGI. Would definitely go see this in theaters!
cgi sux
Loved this movie. Saw it many times. I would like to see it again.
Producer: I want to make a Top Gun meets Star Trek movie.

This is before Top Gun

Ambiguous sentence. Do you mean that real-life footage was actually incorporated into the movie, or just written into the movie?

One of my favorite film when I was a kid..
Loved this movie as a kid
I can't wait for this movie to come out
Always used to watch this with my grandpa , good times
Am I the only 22 year old that loves this movie? I’ve been watching it since I was little😂😂
One of my favorites and I own the DVD.
So, this is where the inspiration for Zipang the anime came from 😂
I was thinking the same thing too lol.
An excellent film that I saw in the theater.
I can't believe how young Martin Sheen looks!
The heat seeking missile costs more than both zeroes combined.
Yes it was silly to waste it
Yes as if the zero isn't the most expensive thing the imperial Japanese could get.
NOT IN 2023 😊
The movie had a very cool premise, but falters beyond it. That said, I'd like to see it again, because it's Kirk Douglas.
A time travel movie that doesn't have to show the past. The ocean then looks exactly the same as the ocean now. 🙂
it has to show the old planes
I absolutely love the plot twist!!!
A fun fact: the full speed of the Zero was about the same as the stall speed of the Tomcat. 😂
As I understand it, the part where the F-14 does that dive towards the water was the plane running out of airspeed and the pilot recovering just in time. Also, the reason the Tomcats seem to be weaving around so much trying to stay behind the Zeros, I think
Not really, zeroes were pretty fast. The T6 Texans that were used in this movie as zeroes however…. They were slow 😂
@@spencerb311 Zeros were fast when they entered service. However, American fighters could fly faster than the Zeros by the end of the war.

And hopefully that's someone in Hollywood other than The Asylum!
Remakes are lazy cash grabs and Hollywood is incapable of making intelligent films nowadays
And the USS Nimitz is still active, they could use the same ship
This movie is closer in time to the Pearl Harbor attack than we are to the movie.

Great premise with a lot of awesome naval aviation scenes, but the movie doesn't do much with the concept beyond having a Tomcat and Zero face off.
Awesomeeee.
The Nimitz back then could have ended WW2 in less than three days.
I like this more than Top Gun.
