    I did a master's project on homeschooling and the facts do NOT support homeschooler's not having socialization . MOst homeschooled children are socialized properly, can speak to adults on an higherlevel than public school children and are more mature .

      I'm homeschooled and I'm perfectly sociable I'm actually quite talkative and I can talk to anyone it just depends on if you socialize them like having them volunteer or taking them to coop really depends on how they are homeschooled if you take them to places where they can talk two people but I grew up near a whole bunch of people so I'm perfectly sociable and I know whole bunch of homeschool kids they're almost more sociable than me

    Thank you. I was homeschooled through 6th grade and always was an introvert. I do have trouble relating to my own age group but other than that my “hidden education” has served me very well. Hitting my 40’s this year and managing a husband on the spectrum, new full garden, new home, beginner canning, sewing, striving to be a low waste household, all the “natural” baby responsibilities including elimination communication with our one yr old and carefully managing an exuberant high spirited 4.8 yr old that is now going to be homeschooled after being in private school 3 hrs for 3 days a week the past 2 yrs. Thanks for the reminder to make a schedule and stick with it; I’m a bit of a free spirit but most of the time too exhausted by the above mentioned stuff (and lack of sleep) to really stick to structured schedules... we do the best we can but always learning and trying to humble ourselves and learn from others who’ve already figured stuff out.🤗 I’m trying to find my way out of this current sassy phase and gain a respectful kid without creating a resentment between us. I hope I can help her to love learning and encourage independent learning. I can remember not appreciating a thing about my mom for how tough she was on us and even being embarrassed of her for how she let herself go... now I see how much she sacrificed for us while both parents worked full time, struggled to care for our homestead, and owned their own businesses. Perspective is a wonderful thing!

    I have been homeschooling for 27years here in Alberta Canada. Just know that what works well for one of your children may not for the other. Six children and all learned differently. Down to homeschooling the youngest 16 year old. There is lots of curriculum available. Most post secondary will accept homeschooled children with them passing an entrance exam.

    When I was 18-19 I taught at a private Mennonite school for a year. We used the Christian Light Education materials. I was amazed at how thorough and well done the curriculum was! Those kids were diagraming sentences in third grade! I never learned how to do that in school, which came as a real struggle in Bible College when I needed to diagram Scripture! Anyway, I loved that experience so much that I really wanted to homeschool my kids. However, my husband only knew one homeschool family growing up and they were very eccentric. So he didn’t want our kids to turn out weird 😬. Also, I struggled with anxiety and depression when my kids were younger and he didn’t think it would be good for my mental health. Now I have kids goi into grade 10, 8, 5, and 2. I’m really considering homeschooling but I’m afraid. My youngest is very social and she suffered the most through all of this craziness. She misses her friends so much! My oldest would love to homeschool because he is very intelligent and wants to be able to work at his own pace. He’s going to be in grade 12 precalculus this year. Anyway, I’m just praying about it right now, asking God to prepare me for whatever may come. We will hear our Province’s education plan on August 1st. Our kids are set to go back on September 8th right now.

      Hi I thought I'd still write even though your comment isn't new, since while there is life there is hope. Regardless of your situation you can be as involved as your able. I've finished distance correspondence education of all my three children now, and yes I struggled with depression (zinc really helps & B vit. But most of all being thankful (to Jesus if your a Christian). Make a list, family, food, shelter, keep it basic then expand (mum & dad, siblings, children, blue sky, birds that sing, ect), stick it on the fridge. THINK on good things, you can because I can, it will strengthen us. Keep your mind on the goal. You or others can always find extreme examples, where things went terribly wrong, but I went to a public school and at a reunion ten years after I left school, there were some people missing (suicide 😭), other people with terrible substance abuse, divorce (if they were married?), but mainly just a pathetic, sad lack of direction for personal life, and goals? Not everyone was like this, one girl was better, but the most, woah ! (I never thought we'd turn out like this). I myself walked a terrible line to find meaning and purpose in my life, almost destroying it, and parents that loved me in the process; till I found Jesus (sorry for the preachy stuff, just sharing the truth of my story).
      Pray you & your husband can find the "normal", that is not acceptable with the crazy world but based on God's word 🙏🏼

    We walked away from public school 7 years ago. Every time my confidence waivers something (like Covid) happens and shows us why we made this choice. My children lost nothing - not their everyday schedule, not their education, not their friends. Well, they did lose a lot of stress! As a matter of fact, parents with public school kids started paying attention to what WE were doing and we were able to host several friends on a regular basis to help them stay on track with their work from public school. My kids are some of the most sociable/socialized people that others meet (we hear that comment all the time.) My 16 yr old has had jobs since she was 14 and others are always impressed with her maturity. To the argument that one person (parent) can't possible teach them all they need to know I respond like this...It is not my job to teach them everything, it is my job to teach them how to learn and where to go find the information that they are seeking. We encourage anyone to give this lifestyle a chance -very rewarding!!!!

    I enjoyed the PANTRY CHAT as always. Great topic. Carolyn, I am with you on so much that you said. I too was a trained public school teacher before my children came...taught kindergarten 8 years. My husband and I always felt it was our job as parents to train our children in social skills, and that they were to learn how to socialize with all ages of people. I too in transitioning to homeschooling made the mistake to set up like a public school classroom. My poor oldest son was the guinea pig..., but we made it and I learned to break out of that mold. Looking back...finished up last year with my youngest child...I'd do it all over again. I'm so pleased, though it was hard at times, with the outcome.

    YES---if kids 'learn how to learn' and grow to love learning, they'll approach most things in life with confidence. I watch the YT channel "Gridlessness' and I love something that the Dad/Husband (Jeff) said about his family learning to give haircuts to each other. It was along the lines of, "If we can smoke our own bacon....we can cut our own hair!" I quote it all of the time when we're faced with a challenge and someone in the family is doubtful about our being able to do it. Sure, there are limits....but we can do with a 'can do' attitude. Great video!

    I don't think the education departments have a clue what they are going to do! It's almost August and not one word to the parents about how school is going to run! If the parents are lucky enough to have a job, they are going to have to make last minute plans on what to do with the kids if they only go to school part time! This is not a good indication of a well run school year!

    Thank you for sharing this. I am a mom who desired homeschooling when my first son was a toddler. I believe I am called to do this but felt discouraged due to his strong willed personality and my perfectionist approach. Through prayer and time I felt at peace sending him to public school for K and 1st which was a great experience for that season. However, now with covid I am excited to answer this calling and jump in homeschooling to add to our homestead dream. I have learned so much throughout the years about his personality and his wonderful spirit and since have learned to give more grace and learn through him. My question is, do you have any tips on how to approach a strong willed child through homeschooling? The emotions can get high but as he is maturing it is easier with logic and reasoning. Thank you and excited for your podcast.

      Intentionally Made As a grandma who has strong willed children and two strong willed grandchildren, I would say let your child have as much control as you possibly can. Give them choices about as many things as you can and be patient and kind. I didn’t do that and my daughters are doing that with their children and I see the big difference. Our strong wills butted heads a lot and I thought I needed to be the one in control, however, I appreciate how my daughters are more wise about this, more patient and less controlling.

      Cynthia Fisher thank you so much! I read the book the “you can’t make me but I can be persuaded” by Cynthia Tobias and it was so helpful to me with perspective and understanding the mastery and approach with strong will and it matches with some of what you’re saying. I prayed for a leader and a faithful child who would do big things and it’s amazing to see how much he’s grown since the toddler stage. Age 3 was really difficult for us. And then age 5 was too. But when I think about how resliant he has become with all our moves and life changes, he really is becoming everything I have prayed for. I just want to make sure I can stay in control of my own feelings and heart as it is easy to bump heads like you said. Thanks again. ❤️

    • @cynthiafisher9907
      @cynthiafisher9907 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Intentionally Made Yes, I read that book, too. It has a lot of wisdom. I don’t know if you are a Christian, but if you are, I would also frequently point your child to Jesus and remind him that our hearts are desperately wicked(yes, yours too, Mom) and rebel against the leadership of God. Therefore, we are powerless to constantly be “good” and obey. Apologize to him when you need to and share some of your struggle to obey the Lord as well. We need the power that only the Lord can give through a changed heart. Pray with him about how God can guide his will if he will surrender it to Him. I made the huge mistake of training my children to try to be “good” in their own strength way too much. The ones who were naturally compliant, of course, were the model children in that system!
      Of course, you can swing too much in the other direction and not have enough power in the relationship, as well. After all, you are the parent and God has entrusted this child to you for a season. You will do your part, but you do not have to do it all. Try to get him ready for a life of surrender to the Lordship of Christ. He does not have to be “finished” when he grows up and leaves your home. I hope this makes sense and you can glean something from it. God bless! Your child is a treasure who can do great things!

He has been getting through and had good grades but saw now how far behind and they just push through. All the kids are many grade levels behind . We also caught our very conservative area school now grooming our older son and pushed gender change and hid it when he was never like that. All and i mean literally the whole local mental facility was full from kids from the school here from suicidal attempts and depression and such and so sad. Im retired military and was in serveral areas from cbrn and later got PA degree. We have a small 7 acer farm and so always have lot going on and learn from he just walked in with baby bird in hand as i write this he got from cat. We are able to focus on what goals he has for himself and interest. But will say hardest part is finding social interaction with kids his age. I reach out to so many homeschool groups in area but not finding older kids so thats what I am working on and would be great just to have friend and do activities or educational things with.

    Because of all that is going on I am remote schooling my oldest and supplementing with home school. My youngest is in a special needs preschool so I am hoping to still send her. But I am researching and trying to find out all I can in case I do need to just pull her.

      Finally someone who has homeschooled older children. Everyone I talk to has young children. How have no clue how I am supposed to homeschool my 14 and 13 year old boys. They have been in public school since kindergarten but the weird things they are doing in school this year isn't good for the kids so I'm pulling them out. But I have no idea how to compensate for the activities and classes they are loosing (choir, theater, woodshop, welding, golf, shooting club, robotics, etc.). Help!

    Homeschooling is something I've always wanted to do. My son is doing digital learning right now, meeting with his teacher and class 4 days a week on Zoom, but I would like to make the transition to homeschooling. The part that seems overwhelming is....where do I start?

    I know you don’t want to talk about curriculums I guess this is more on your opinion. I noticed during this online schooling this past year that my child seemed to slip through the cracks as far a learning multiplication/division. She’s great at addition/subtraction reading writing Ect. How would you go about trying to help filling in the gap she’s slipped through?

    You know how they say when babies learn to walk they are going to fall down... Well not my first born it was part of her personality even way back then and I didn't know all that would mean but my daughter was able to sit up and crawl at exactly 6 months and within a week pulled herself up to the coffee table and Cruse. But she refused to fall like most kids if she lost her balance at all she lowered herself with a squat. She is 5 starting k in the fall. Thankfully my daycare preschool is expanding to kindergarten but you never know if we are going to have an out break or what have you and I pushed to hard in the spring and she equated learning and school with hard work and hard work or possiblity of failure to be avoided some of that she gets from me but part of that she had at six months so I don't think I could have thaught that if I tried! Though I am mostly focused on supplementing not being the primary person responsible for all education. I know as I get things I need to focus on passive learning. We read the first chapter of life of Fred apples. I want her learning math concepts feeling like a bed time story has a real appeal. For reading I had gotten Bob's books but she felt it was to hard so I took a step back. She watches a fair amount of pbs shows and I am trying to be intentional about what she is learning without her feeling like she is doing something that she precives is too hard. She gets tummy aches and says her body tells her no. I don't want her hating school already. I know I need to do more to switch that mindset

    You talked about getting out and doing things in person to learn. I am worried that with all the libraries, museums, theaters, and other places being shut down how is this going to adversely affect homeschooling? Without these things does homeschooling turn more into basic school or is there a way to still give them hands on experiences?

    • @PeleLua1
      @PeleLua1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You bring up a good point. I will say though that A LOT of these places have stepped up and you can do all kinds of virtual tours. There are even programs out there that are discovery ‘lessons’ of these places, especially museums, that allow students to take in places they could never see otherwise, like the Louvre in Paris. Not ‘hands on’ but still better than not having at all.

    I don't have kids yet. I don't like working outside of the home or the idea of sending my kids to school. Sending my kids out to play or learn with a group is going to work better for me when I become a mother. I grew up with a mother in the 90s who was a powerhouse and burned herself out by the time I was in middle school. I will never be able to be like that. I followed you before Covid but I am happy now this lifestyle will become more mainstream. I have zero desire to send my child to public school... I had an awful time. Thank you

    Hello! Do you have a resource for a homestead/homeschool planner? I am looking for one source to keep all my homestead and homeschool records and plans.

    • @PeleLua1
      @PeleLua1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leah Olson I’m not sure I can full answer your question, but can give a suggestion. As a public school teacher we use Google Classroom with students. The nice thing is that ANYONE, not just teachers, can utilize the free program also. It allows you the ability to grade and track grade records right in the online system, plus helps keep track of all the other plans you might develop. Using it along with a free google account where you can utilize google drive to store all your material, I think you would find it a great record and plan keeping system. For example: let’s say I find (or come up with) a document of my own that details an activity I want my student to do. I turn that paper into a document (over just make the document) and store it in google drive. Then when ready I post the directions on google classroom where it’s time and date stamped, easily found by the student and they can also submit their work back in that manner (cuts down on lost paper, or maybe even the fact that it was an activity with no paper involved!). Then I can grade it in GC. Later I can download all the assignments with grades to a spread sheet that can be stored back on my google drive or I could even print it out. I think you would find using G drive and G classroom together make a very nice homeschooling system that can be individualized to each child in your home. Both are free and offer LOTS of free video courses on how to use them. Hope this helps!

    Wonderful information. My concern with homeschooling is I have high school age kids, and we live in a small rural town with almost no support system or resources. One is so into fine arts (theater, choir, and clubs). How in the world am I supposed to help him continue these activities if I am homeschooling? And also the cost of things. My other son wants to build a computer (his interest), but I can't afford the parts it takes to build one. How do homeschool families afford to do the things their kids are interested in especially when there are multiple children (5)?

    • @morganhorse181
      @morganhorse181 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some schools will allow homeschoolers to attend classes like theater, gym, computer, etc. Might be worth a call to the district’s central office if you’re interested.

    • @PeleLua1
      @PeleLua1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jennifer Blackman Morgan is absolutely correct. We have had plenty of homeschooled children in our building only for those classes that parents felt they couldn’t provide for, mainly the arts and clubs as you stated. Most school districts have some policy for this, as well as most states have some policy that schools must allow for homeschooled children to make use of ‘public school’ resources.

    How do you handle learning disabilities? My grandson struggles with dyslexia. His mother has found that it is hard to find knowledgeable help for him. He is so great with math but reading is so very difficult for him. Then he gets mad and completely shuts down.

    • @charitytanel8107
      @charitytanel8107 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally I find children all so different in their abilities and way of learning. Dyslexia (commonly known as word and/or number blindness), was certainly a challenge that had me stumped for awhile, especially since not all my children were labeled like this, I first had to remove the box, and the tick that goes in it, and NOT stress, to find workable solutions for us, 32:12 time stamp gives good advice on making it fun. We actually got the play dough and made the words, nouns ect before we made the dinosaurs ect. We started of small then added more as basics were grasped. #5 was always a problem (back to front), so we made a stik man with a hat and belly 5. Dyslexics are very clever, my son even made his own language, and wrote it out with instructions for me, I said, Wow, that's good but now we have to focus on English that everyone understands, and we struggled, literally for years. Till one day he got it, he was diagramming sentences, reading all those literature books he hadn't touched for years and I'd given up on, and telling me what interesting stories they were he should have read them earlier 😊
      Find something your child in interested. Mine was musically gifted in one area (none of the others were), (Mozart, I think was dyslexic, which is why they said he was a genius). Most importantly take the label off, or if you must have a label, find the one that says, You are great at this, you Can do that, let's develop your talent at math, cooking, music (you'll find all these need reading, so that will start too), kicking a football. Most of all pray and find value in yourself and them, just for being who they are, don't let them be manipulated like clay in some else's hands, apart from God.

    I want to expand my garden but I’m in a neighborhood, my garden is a raised bed in the only flat spot with sun the rest of my yard is a hill or in shade , any tips ?

    • @saucywench9122
      @saucywench9122 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Take advantage of the hill and it's water run off. Plant on that hill, see how stuff grows. Terrace out the hill. Plants don't have to have 9 straight hours of sunlight. My tomatoes only get 3.5 hours of direct sunlight a day. I may not have tons of tomatoes but I do have tomatoes. Purple yams, you can prepare the greens like spinach and eat the tubers . Plus the tubers can get massive.

    • @saucywench9122
      @saucywench9122 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Find out what plants can grow in shade. Lemon balm, mints. Lots of herbs do just fine in shade or difuse sunlight. Look up forest gardens. There are vids on YT. A plant may not get direct sunlight in shade but they still get light either by the sun or moon. Don't be scared to plant in shade.

      Christian light education is a mennonite company that ships their curriculum all over the world. It is amazing quality education and they do everything they can to help their international customers. We used it while living in romania and one thing that impressed me was their very reasonable shipping rates. Also one time a box got lost in the mail (not their fault at all) and they helped us by contacting the shipping company and tracking it for us. We are back in the United states and homeschooling again this year using CLE. I use it for everything except science. I use apologia science which cle also offers through their online store for high school levels.

      I taught kindegarten and , of course, the kids were not reading yet. To interest the boys, I let them pick ANY book in the room to "read" . They chose books way over their abilities based on their interests, then , kept coming to me asking"what's This word? What's that say?" Before you know it they will be reading what they are interested in.
