How is the shoulder? Riding that bike?
Some seem to be missing what this bike is meant to look like.
Its based upon the Wayne Rainey 500cc Grand Prix Yamaha from the early 1990s, which won the 500cc Championship in its Marlboro sponsored paint scheme.
The yellow sections, which dictate the GP class, are where the race numbers would be, hence the tiny cut out for the headlight. Its not meant to be aping any road bikes, but that YSR500
Yep, people commenting on the looks saying this looks dumb, why did they do this. If only people would educate themselves before doing a review, but that takes effort.
👍 explained to a T
@MrRadialdrift as it happens I suspect I am quite well educated as far as this bike is concerned - I have read the extensive press launch notes provided by Yamaha and can give you chapter and verse on the design queues this bike has from the past - but regardless of that, for someone who wasn't into bikes in the 80's and 90's, this bike doesn't trigger the nostalgia cells and to me (my opinion) that front, from the front, look plain ugly (OK from the side though)....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Purely for the record, my comment wasn't aimed at you or your great review at all Andy. It was more for those that seem to be under the impression it's meant to look like their old YPVS, EXUP or TZR from the past, and needs round headlights etc. Thats not the point, but just those legendary Grand Prix 500cc Yamaha's from the early 90s (and I've never seen or read a press release for the bike, it comes just from my nostalgic soaked old aged brain 😉)
@Kentishmale1969 No problem or offfence caused I can assure you! According to the Yamaha blurb it's a design "based on an era not a model" (and they show pictures of a TZR250, YZF, R1 and others) and the "Customer can imprint their own memories on the bike, to maximise the personal nostalgia". So it's whatever it means to you.....
A absolute stunner - and one of the very few sports bikes I'd love to own - it looks a fantastic dose of pure nostalgia from my early biking days 👍🏽👍🏽
When I first saw it all I could think was Wayne Rainey and Marlboro. Shows my age.!! I think it is beautifully done with the addition of modern braking and addition of the miniscule lighting. This was a racebike and not designed for night and road application. I can remember on 24 hr races when gigantic light bars were quickly added just before the night riding portions. Staying awake for the entire 24 hrs were a struggle but so enjoyable. 👍👍5🏍🙋♂️
Another fine review… thanks Andy and well done Yamaha for this lovely motorcycle… great job 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Andy.Great that you have the first test.Shows how much you are valued. Well done,it must make all the effot worthwhile.
Thanks 👍
Thing of beauty….one of those bikes you would sit in your garage on a rainy day and just look at.
Not a huge sports bike fan but had I the money to have a bike for occasional use…this would be it.
Had it had twin round headlamps I think it would be love!
Yes agreed!
Agree. It's just a matter of personal taste, but I think this one is just a more handsome sportsbike than any of the R series. They all are great bikes though and I hope the CP2 and CP4 get the same XSR GP treatment as well.
I agree, a double round headlight would compliment that curvy front.
It’s an absolute thing of beauty in my opinion.
Great review. Stunning machine. Look forward to detailed review.
I'm in lust. Takes me back.....
Well done for getting the first UK review.
Cheers!
Love it, think Yamaha has done a really good job! It does remind me of my old days riding. And well done to you for a respectful review, especially given that you haven't been riding long. Come a long way, good on ya.
Thanks!
It's nice to see the fairing stays and fag packet type paint job. A reminder of simpler days. Sounds good too. 👍
Another great review. Looking forward to the next video Andy. Just subscribed , been watching for a while , don't know why I didn't subscribe a while back. Hope all is good with you.
Welcome aboard Kelvin and thanks for the sub!
I'm very tempted, love the review, makes me want one!
Wayne Rainey was my guy when I started following GP in the mid '80s and my first sportbike was a '89 Yamaha FZR 600. 30+ years later my skills are better and more refine, I know what I like. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Yamaha send this bike to the U.S. I have not wanted a sportsbike in a long time and you can take my money! Looking forward to the in depth review.
I think the first video of yours I ever watched was your ride/ review of the 2017 XSR900 while researching for my first real road bike. I bought a brand new one Jan 2018, just like the one in your review - same blue color and everything. It was a "leftover" model in the middle of winter in NY. I got a nice deal on it and I've had it ever since! Love that bike. Been a sub for 7 years! Thanks for all the entertaining and informative vids. ✌
Wow! Thanks for staying for the long haul!
Enjoyed your review as always.
Glad to hear it!
Enjoyed your first review, looking forward to the next part. I’m in my 70’s and still ride a sport bike , so I like the retro vibe.
Glad you enjoyed it
Lovely retro bike Andy great review !! Keep up the great vids 👍
Thanks, will do!
Great looking bike, superb day, and nice jacket. Keep up the great videos. Thanks Andy.
Thanks, will do!
Great review Andy, I love a retro looking bike with all the modern equipment. I think it’s a marmite bike where people will either love it or hate it.
For me though it’s got a great personality and looks the part.
Looking forward to the next one sir. Have a great weekend 👍🏻
You too Dan!
Personally I'm a fan of the XSR900GP , I think it's great looking bike that's reasonably price, the design harks back to bikes from my youth and the 500 GP bikes I watched the likes of Wayne Rainey race back in the day, so hats off to Yamaha for building it.
Omg, I've only been riding since 2017 but I have triple fever! Utterly love this, sound, quickshifter, sound, awkward looks.. and did I mention SOUND!!!!
Love it!! Great review (although the sunny, perfect road ones are my 'real world' - Valencia 🤣🤣). Not for the current day day me with my achy wrists, bad shoulder etc, but if I could turn back time....Your helmet cam view reminds me very much of when I lived in your neck of the woods ('95 ish) & had a Laverda 650 Sport - ah great memories.....Hope your shoulder is mended & keep up the great work.
Thanks John - sadly not mended yet....early days I guess.....
Nice first review of the new Yamaha! Kudos to you for getting the scoop on everyone else. I've always loved the pseudo road racer look. The John Player Norton was my lust-for machine. This new Yamaha is beautiful. But with all that curved bodywork, the headlight should have been round. My brother had the Yamaha RZ500 V4 2-stroke. This 900 certainly looks the part. Hope you slip in a track day while you have it in your garage 😉 Looking forward to seeing the more in depth review 👍 Keep up the 1st class work! Cheers 😁
Thank you!
Great Vid. straight forward and honest, you completely did a (figurative U turn ) on the looks and that's what I like - You're human and change your mind, which some folk consider a failing, I think its a trait! Well done, looking forward to the in depth vid. I grew up with these in the 80's and love the vibe. I like 80's, 90's bikes. You can get a lot of (then) cutting edge machine for next to nothing now 3 wise, but this Yam has tuned my head...
Its about time you did another 'old' bike review?
Keep safe TMF. Hey and how that plane?
Great intro review. Can't wait for the updates.
Coming soon! ...stay tuned!
Looks great...sounds great! Good to use as a toy to enjoy riding if you don't want/need anything practical :-) cheers for the review!
It looks stunning !
I love the look of that bike, and i think they'll sell in spades. For me Yamaha are top of there game. The full MT range, XSRs, Tracer, Tenere and the R models. I cant think of another manufacturer that has so much top notch choice.
My goodness your start riding in 2011? You certainly have done alot of catching up in the last 13 years. Excellent beard😄😄 Nice jacket...no bugs? It's a shame such a nice bike is hard on us more senior riders. I've never found gripping the tank with your knees particularly helpful.
I wonder if I would have been so into bikes if my dad hadn't always taken me around on a Honda cd175 1976 from around 4 years old and if we were lucky would take out his X reg 1982 cbx550f2. I got a ts50x in 1994 and a Honda mt5 in 1995. And a cb125rs in 1996
Looks class wouldn't mind owning one 😊
Love your bearded mate for the add. 😂🤣😅🙃😉 Good reviews always, thanks for the effort and sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is stunning, clearly a retro style you either love or hate, but it looks amazing to me.
Great review, this is a beauty, I've seen it in the flesh in cmc chesterfield, wow looks incredible how it picks it's feet up, sounds awesome 😎.. too big for me but wow it's a yes from me 😳🎉
Lovely review of the XSR 900 GP (major upgrade from the "regular" XSR 900) - got to follow your channel after reviewing the 2018 MT09 SP which has become my darling ever since - a agile star on any mountain pass with optimized 181,5 kgs wet and 117 whp ☺✌🏁
It's weird how bikes can look better in person than in photos/videos. I did not like Triumph Bonnevilles until I saw them in person. I ended up testing and then buying a 2019 Street Scrambler, and now I think the Bonnevilles in general, and especially the Scrambler 1200, are among the most beautiful motorcycles ever made. When I take the Street Scrambler to a cars and coffee event, people will walk across the parking lot to look at and ask about it. When I take my Tiger 900, it's largely ignored--I think people can't distinguish it from all the other modern adventure bikes out there, but they instantly warm to the classic lines of the Bonneville.
Yes I completely get that....
I trust your opinion.top video.thanks
Thanks to you
Any comment on the bar end mirrors? Is it a convenient glance and is the view good? Vibration? Do they intrude if filtering to a stoplight? They appear to be bespoke to this bike. Quality ok?
Yes they work well - no vibes, good view behind…
Hi Andy. Great vid as always. The bike looks great if you’re into Japanese bikes of that era and I’m sure it’ll sell a few. Cheers bud and have a lovely weekend.
You too Steve....
Saturday morning, watching this as my tea gets cold . . . what a bike . . . much, much envy.
Always had a soft spot for hard-core Yamahas, rigid, quick & uncompromising, almost to a fault - had more than one of them 'flick' my inattention a couple of inches off the seat! - & for a 'road bike', this one certainly doesn't look 'sane' enough to be out there munching through the 'traffic'.
Eight years ago, MS threw my licences into life's little shredder, so seeing these new bikes come out is usually 'bitter sweet' to watch at best; but this one, this one really twists the 'kin knife!
(Not jealous at all . . . just hoping 'a big fat juicy one' randomly decorates your nice clean visor : )
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and 30 years ago i most likely would have loved the design of this bike but not now, to me it's just trying to hard. Loved your jacket looks fabulous if a little steep, price wise.
Hi Andy, that new 'merican guy on the add was hilarious! Very Australian of you taking the mickey..... I loved it. Humor aside, nice vid Andy as usual. From down under Dave in Brisvagas Queensland, Australia :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
That bike really tweeks my fancy, I'm old enough to remember the awesome Lc500 in them colours.
Cool - yes they seem to appeal to those that were biking at the time big time....
Congratulations on your scoop! First time I’ve seen this bike properly and it seems to reinforce my high opinion of Yamaha approach to design. This was a tricky one to pull off aesthetically ( I wasn’t plugged in to racing bike looks at the time) but I like the way they have subtly hit the balance between then and now. The ergos don’t look too bad either and since I discovered omeprazole last year I would definitely consider buying one (if I had any spare credit) not as beefy as my FZ1s (or my old Daytona 955) but at 70 I spose I ought to calm down a bit anyway. Thanks
I just had my morning Omeprazole!
" Retro frock " ...made me chuckle 😀Thanks Mr Flyer ❤
Glad you enjoyed it
Now bring it to the USA please, nice review ride safe!
I love these brilliant 😊❤ top job Yamaha.. Pete
One of the nicest looking bikes on sale today. I hope Yamaha will be able to meet the sales demand.
LOVE this bike solo mucho
Excellent starting sceptical and explanation of attitude change review. Love, as a retro, from first sight. If only they get around to selling in USA🤷🏻♂️
Absolutely gorgeous, good to see a different perspective but to me that bikes pretty spot on only made better by a lovely 2 stroke lump sat in it. Nice work
Thanks for watching and for stopping by!
Hi bud what are the bla ck bits of frame under the rear sub frame on oth sides are they rear pegs love your video as always
Yes they are....
I would love one
"Shut up and Take My Money!". I remember the 90's extremely well as an old fart, I was a huge Wayne Rainey fan and this bike tickles places I've completely forgotten! It certainly needs the sports exhaust to make it look like an EXUP. You're gonna have a great time with this! What I would like to see you do with this is go to a pub/coffee shop and see how many people stop to admire it and ask questions. This bike draws a lot of people's attention nostalgically. Bikers like myself are like bees to honey
Yamaha have some beautiful pieces in their line up.
Nice bike and a nice jacket Andy 👍
Thanks 👍
I like it. Akky & a rear tidy will sort.
I think your initial thought on the looks were 💯 correct 😄
Segura is indeed a French brand and I’m very happy with their jackets. I found the armours supplied a bit stiff and only L1 so I upgraded to some D3O Ghost L2 for the shoulders and elbows.
Probably showing my age but I was immediately enamoured with the design which I think is a brilliant homage to some of my favourite bikes of yesteryear. Throw in a CP3 and Yamaha have delivered a modern classic. As always, TMF, thanks for your considered review.
Morning TMF! That looks about as comfy as your old Panigale!!
Morning!
Dave here,.. I’ve been riding for nearly 40 years, I rode the latest XSR900 in that Electric blue with gold wheels and thought that looked as good as it rode. This one I think is all too much and looks a cheap dogs dinner, not quite sure of its relevance. But we are all different. Should mention the seat was really hard, so hope it’s better on his one 😮
Love the look of this bike, reminds me of bikes of my youth, not available in Canada though and not sure how my back would like it these days.
I did not realize that you've hired Dan Dan the Fireman to do your commercials 😄
Very interested to hear what you think of the bike once you have gotten used to it.
When I first saw this bike (MCN) it took me back to when I first started riding (1983). The looks are just fantastic. Two things I would change are dual rounded headlights, tho I get keeping to the GP look. Also I would like to see analogue looking dials in the cockpit. Unfortunately, even if I was able to, the riding positon would stop me getting on one today, arthritic knees and hips lol. Looking forward to seeing more of this amazing looking retro.
Yes - same changes I would make!
Well done Yamamha for bring out a super looking retro modern sports bike and not at stupid Ducati/BMW money, great review Andy.
Many thanks!
I'm kind of in love with the styling. I've always wanted one of the older screamer 250-400cc bikes but they're not the most reliable. Only thing is I have a 2020 Ducati Supersport S that I don't see letting go of anytime soon haha.
Coming from the older generation that can remember seeing this style of Yamaha competing on the race track it put a Big smile on my face, when a saw one in my local dealership Padgetts I was all over it. I think it’s Brilliant but I wish the factory had not included the TFT screen, would of looked better with a round clock dominated by a rev counter. Well done TMF - a Brilliant scoop.
Thank you!
Thankfully I'm not quite ready for the 70 jacket yet... 😉😁
You look so much better with a beard! Reminds me of yovs 350 from eighties. Not for me would never stand up straight again
Great review of the throwback GP.
Next up, it’s time for a review of the Ducati Supersport 950S. Please and thank you. 😉
I love the sound of a triple.
Me too!
I am really glad you liked it in spite of your pre-judgement... I think it's the best 900 cc Yamaha
Am sad i am unable to afford this. Thanks for geting us an early review.
No worries!
That's a stunning bike.
It really is!
Not sure about the mirrors though.....fairing mount would been more suited I thinkl
Lucky euro getting this model… if it comes to NA, I will buy it instantly even not a sport bike fan.. this thing is just a pure beauty
Its crying out for a set of numbers on the GP500 yellow race plates (front and seat)
i know it's not quite the bike they're referencing with this, but I would've LOVED old school dual round headlights- i miss those so much and it seems like only a few ADVs still have them.
I wish Suzuki would come out with a retro bike styled like the 1986-87 GSX-R750, good lord does that bike give me the fizz.
Exactly my thoughts..this would be perfect.
Trouble is it wouldn't look like a 500GP bike then (which is what it's referencing of course with those yellow nose and seat plates)
@@kentishmale1969 of course! Just stating my aesthetic preference, which is for the larger lights. Having the front light so small as to reduce the impact of its appearance on the race style fairing was an interesting way to negotiate the issue
I had a 500 rz ...boring headlight...an FZ 750 totally horrendous headlight....gsxr 1100 bug eyes ewww.....Why would you put bug eyes on a bike when you can't see the bloody tail light...I love it mines here in 3 weeks..bike number 27 I'm 64 I have a wr450 and an R1 you can't even see its headlights
If this bike had twin round headlamps it would have been literal motorcycle perfection
Hi Andy, yes I was riding bikes during this design period, and have no wish to go back to that bulbous look, not a big fan of that look but the bike itself and that glorious triple engine is a peach. Thank you.
If I squint it has vibes of the first Fireblade, a couple of round headlights would suit it much better, well to me anyway
I have just started watching this video but before I'm even one second in... how did you get a hold of this beauty before the MT-09SP?? Haha maybe I'll find out after watching it all.
Indeed!
The MT09SP isn’t due into the UK until August at the earliest
not a fan of the 3 minute car vertical ad tbh, esp the format! But understand you have to do them to make money.
A necessary evil I’m afraid!
Plus 3 x other long ads before we get to the specs
Immediately after your Car Ad, TH-cam decided to insert their ad selling women’s dresses. Obviously aimed at Chopsie and Bruce (try getting that image out of your head) but a time waster for the vast majority of us viewers.
Change your browser. Brave browser filters everything. You save sooo much time and money.
3:25 omg
I think the only problem is going to be availability. Cmc Claycross are getting 2 in June both already sold. One of them is the demo. Last weekend when I asked, they don't know when the next batch is due in after that. I've booked a go on the demo. Great job getting the first Uk ride, also to get the vid out the door quick sharp.
Thank you!
Nearly spat my coffee out…. ! Only short of duelling banjo’s.
This will be controversial. I do own a 1981 RD350LC…. and ride it… anyone who has ridden an 89’s 2 stroke would likely say, the XSR will be only a nod backwards to Yamaha’s 2 stroke past…..
Styling is spot on, but nothing else….thankgoodness! You have highlighted the modern bikes positives….
Here are some of the past negatives….. 2 strokes simply eat fuel, I average 20-25 mpg……
They vibrate like a jack hammer…
Brakes are poor…..
yadda yadda yadda….
I have modern suspension on my LC and it handles well, but that has been at considerable cost….
The one thing where both bikes’ path will cross, 43 years apart, they will both make you smile.
Great review, get yourself on some older 2 strokes…. Yep! You’ve only dipped a toe in the water with Mr Millyard…..
Thank you as ever for dropping by! …and the long comment….
Very reminiscent of an FZR1000 I had years ago. Loved that bike. Went like stink, but was amazingly comfy for a sports bike. I did initially have an achy wrist issue when I first got it, but soo got used to it. I had it for 3 years & sold to my stepson, who commuted on it for 3 years. Eventually sold to a grass track racer, who wanted the engine. It had 68k on it by then. Never missed a beat.
As a former TZR250 owner I would buy this in a heartbeat if I didn't already have a 2021 xsr900
I like the styling but can’t get away with that panel gap between the lower and upper. 😮
I get it.... reminds me of my GSXR 750 in the early 90's.
Strongly considering upgrading the ZX6R I've had for 16 years to this. Would be interested to see how the GPS works and if you think it's any good, as I'd like to use it to find my way around. No one seems to have covered that well.
Sadly I couldn't get the app to connect with my phone - it looks good in the pictures I've seen (proper mapping) but, like so many others in my experience, is a bit of a bugger to get working reliably (might just be me - but bearing mind my degree is in Computer Science!!).
@TheMissendenFlyer thank you for the quick reply. That doesn't sound good though!
Might just be me....
Sorry Andy but whatever you may think, those are NOT amazing roads! This bike needs to be ragged over the A686 on a warm sunny Sunday... wearing a Yamaha Paddock jacket, Levi's and Nike trainers. Then you'll understand the real 80's retro vibe!😲👌
I have to work with the roads I have available!
@@TheMissendenFlyer do the manufacturers/distributors put a mileage limit on the loan period? Not being awkward or looking for an argument, genuinely interested to know!
Cheers Alistair 👍
I saw this bike today at CMC Chesterfield and it literally stopped me in my tracks! I also couldn't believe the low price.
Any pictures or video simply don't do it justice. It really is wonderfully striking in the flesh.
My Mrs thinks the front end looks like iron man 😂 😂
Great review Andy and congrats on the scoop!
Thanks - and I agree with your Mrs....
@@TheMissendenFlyer And now.. I'll never be able to unsee it 😂
I know you came to the party late but I am sure you can appreciate the love someone like myself would have for his old FZR pretending to be Wayne Rainey! You probably feel some nostalgia towards your first few planes you learn in or flew after qualifying. I think it’s a bold move from Yam as there is nothing like this out there at the moment….. Thanks for the non rose-tinted review much appreciated.
Yes I completely get it - and although it doesn't do anything for me on the nostalgia front I do think it is quite a special motorbike....
I think it’s a fabulous retro (late) 80’s, early 90’s motorcycle…a proper sport bike with 120hp…who needs 220hp? 🏍️👍🇿🇦🍺
Thanks for posting. I agree, the back of the bike is not attractive, but I think it would be greatly improved by doing a tail tidy on it. Not a Ducati 916, for sure.
She's a peach TMF, best looking bike i've seen in yonks( i could probably ride it for half an hour or so now) then a wash polish & a gloat would be the order of the day, cheers.
I liked the ad. How did Mrs Flyer like the beard? Very distinguished 😀
I'm gald you liked it! Lot of effort went into that!
