Deftones is one of the most distinct and unique bands out there. Your sound is very particular. Delirious lyrics, catchy riffs, addictive vocals. Each song is a masterpiece that transports us on a journey to another dimension. "Sextape", "Rosemary", "Minerva", "Hole in the Earth", "Cherry Waves", "Diamond Eyes", "You've Seen the Butcher", "Prayers/Triangles", "Passenger", "Beauty School"... so many spectacular tracks. It's to listen to for hours and hours and be taken on a journey to another universe.
wow, i love Deftones, but i would have a completely different list to recommend lol ,, never seen anyone recommend so many of their later songs. Im definitely more of a White Pony and Adrenaline fanboy, but its cool that people can enjoy them from a different perspective.
@@Chyrnobyl66I love White Pony. Digital Bath, Change and Passenger are masterpieces. Adrenaline already has a harder feel, which I like but is not among my favorites. Diamond Eyes, Saturday Night Wrist, Gore and Koi No Yohan are my favorites because they have simultaneous melodic and aggressive sounds, creating a unique sound, almost like a trip to another dimension.
This is the song that took Deftones from “oh yeah, they’re pretty cool”, to “have you listened to White Pony yet? Omg, they’re so good”. Growing up in Los Angeles I remember this song being number 1 on the nightly Kroq countdown for what seemed like a month
Terry Date man, he's a big reason White Pony is so iconic, the production on the album is just nuts, it's an all time recording for atmosphere and ambient sonics.
exactly his words: Moreno: “It’s a metaphorical song. You could take it in the literal sense of me watching someone turn into a fly and taking them home with me and pulling of their wings and laughing. It spawns from me being a complete asshole and getting the complete repercussion for it by having my life taken away.”
@@halfstripman I don’t know, I’m getting old and my memory is shit lately, but I think I heard somewhere it’s the fans of the band Slipknot. I don’t know, that doesn’t sound right to me though
Love Deftones. For me this is an abusive relationship from the abusers side. The other person is trying to grow and change so the abuser wants to pull off their wings and convince them they never had them.
Could also be the other way around. Being in a relationship with someone who was an angel in the beginning. But then showed that they never had wings at all. And that abuser feels alive with the control over the abused. But i definitely see your point. Its why music is wonderful. So many ways to take it. :)
@@bigtaliberto3092 Here's my interpretation: It starts with "I watched you change into a fly." You know what a fly is before it's a fly? It's a MAGGOT. A disgusting bottomfeeder crawling in filth. Leads me to believe the song is about Moreno remeniscing about an ex lover who moved on to become out of his league and wanted better things, perhaps finding a new lover on their "level". Then? Moreno showed up to act a fool, ruin said relationship, and laugh at how his pettiness brought his ex lover back down to his level. The "here's the gun, blow me away" part is him goading her into further conflict. Their relationship is no longer about love, but about seeking constant one-upmanship in petty squabbles.
I always interpreted the song as describing a love for an addict. Things may have started good but it generally turns for the worst. You want to love and support them through it, but eventually you realize that you are just enabling them. Not only to keep using, but to destroy you along with them.
The album White Pony from which this song is taken is a masterpiece.Check out knife party or passenger featuring Maynard from TOOL from the same album.

i remember the very first time i heard that song in 2000. i was cruising in my car at 11pm, turned on the radio on that weird ethereal song. I was hooked; just like that.. I'm a uge Deftones fan since then.
That trade mark Chino creaky fry vocal is so good in this. I interpret it as getting someone addicted to drugs and now regrets it looking back. Kinda like the morning after a party, it's fun the night of but the next morning its a mess and you feel like crap. sounds like you kinda got the same from it. I've heard multiple different interpretations though.
I’ve always viewed it as the person narrating the song damaged someone to a point where they’d never return to who they were, so much so that they don’t even remember a time when they didn’t feel this way, and the narrator is looking back on it. Second verse makes it hard for me to see it any other way. Pretty sure Chino said it was about him being an asshole to someone close to him if I remember correctly from that one interview.
Deftones has been one of my favourite bands for legit so many year, I keep listening to their albums on repeat their songs just NEVER gets old, I feel like if you like them this much you'd really like Loathe too!
I think you pretty much nailed it. Neither of them wanted maturity, and when she reached it, he took it away (or whatever metaphor you make out of the "wings"), now he blames her for the stuff he at the very least enabled. While he seems to regret it bitterly, it's way too late to fix anything
This album added new elements which they started using more in later albums. Listen to songs off adrenaline by them (7 words, engine no. 9, bored, root) I think you’d be surprised by how different they sound
Advice to the person giving the reaction right now. Most songs are metaphors for something completely different from the literal message. Love this band. Will be seeing them at State Farm Arena in March. 🤘🏼
Chinos vocals whisk you to other places you physically can never venture but emotionally spiritually take you on an adventure. You just travel without a form it’s the only way to explain
4:15 Well.. the song is literally about him admitting guilt that he was a controlling dick to an ex-lover. And feeling they grew apart because of him. He admits fault in the lyric "I give you the gun, blow me away". Incredibly well written song about manipulation, change, and growth. Hey, we all learn life somehow. You should listen to their song "Passenger". That's one I can play on repeat. They are totally a vibes and chill band.
That's a rabbit hole you should go down. One of my favorite bands of all time. One of a kind. Every album is incredible. If it wasn't for Tool existing Deftones would probably be my number one band.
Its all part of life. Back in the day we all had our wings pulled off but we didn't stop we kept going and grew new one's. So yeah this song kick's a lot of ass.
i understood it more as like, the having wings meaning them being able to get high, using the wings to fly higher, metaphorical for the high drugs give, and since he says 'it's like you never had wings', and that they changed, could mean they went sober while he's still addicted? i couldve misinterpreted it pretty hard.
I took it as he took her for granted. Thought she’d always be there no matter what. So him being a POS to her and realizing she’s better off. Hence him saying I watched you changed. It’s like you never had wings meaning you didn’t respect yourself. Def toxic from his perspective. Either way banger ass song!
It's a song about a girl he likes and new for a long time. He wanted to get with her but she didn't feel the same way. So, he would watch from a far thinking she would change her mind when it comes around but instead she changed as a person. She's good looking but she used to be a nice person on the inside but then highschool came around and she changed.. she had wings.. she got to meet many other guys, dated other guys and changed for the worse. He watches her from a far and what he felt about her dies. It's because she looks good on the outside but she met too many bad apples that she changed on the inside going out partying drinking.. she watch slowly how his thoughts of them being together dies... she changed into a fly... I couldn't look away ... why because it's like how did that happen. it's like watching someone you love and care about go to shit right in front of your eyes each year that passes by. He had crazy thoughts of just putting her on a glass and pulling off the wings... aka he wanted to stop her from seeing these other guys that changed her as a person and wanted to trap her with him aka be exclusive but he knows it wont happen. That is why he laughs as he pulls of the wings because that's what he wanted to do but it's ridiculous knowing that it won't even be a possibility. That is why he laughs at that thought of pulling off her wings. He just gets to watch her date other men and see her life go down the the drain from afar.
To me, music is subjective like poetry and to me, the song is trying to say we're like angels with wings and once we start being naughty and the wings come off, we feel more alive.
I think the (reddit) consensus is this is about him taking the blame for the failure of his marriage and him being an asshole, so it is written from the perspective of him being a manipulative jerk. He's the bad guy. She left him and felt alive but he has stolen her wings.
