Wasn't able to attend the live broadcast last night, so am watching it now Thurs morning. Only watched 25min so far and it already is both insightful and spot-on on many points! Really good topic of discussion...cheers!
What a great interview and guest! (He sold a copy of the course to at least one person 😂) IIRC it's "where's Wally" in the UK and "where's Waldo" in the US. I think it's originally a UK book series that was changed when they brought it to my country (US) sort of like "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" became "Sorcerer's Stone." Chua's accent sounds Singaporean to my ears (or somewhere in SEA) so I'm surprised he thought Waldo first. Would have thought they'd have sold the British version there.
“Improve your worse piece” is meant to be advice for when there are no tactics and you don’t have a plan, it’s always a way to find SOMETHING to do. Like lots of shared knowledge, it gets diluted over time and becomes something players look to do immediately which is often unhelpful. Hope that explains it.
The problem is what exactly is called improvement? It's a vague & broad term. If there was a perfect definition of 'Improving your pieces' no GM would blunder ever. But we know even world champions blunder & lose games. Strategic & positional nuances are sooooo many that they can't be brought under one or few rules. But I appreciate CM Azel Chua & I am planning to do his calculation course.
56:20 Imthought FIDE reinstated the 400 pt rule as part of the ratings changes this month (which also put the rating floor higher at like 1400 or something - whatever the 1000 FIDE player got in terms of adjustment). So I guess this means it'll be FM Chua soon. ;)

@@japman5699 this exact question is covered really well in “Grandmaster Secrets: Positional Play” by Jacob Aagaard.
@@japman5699 it’s worth reading Grandmaster Preparation: Positional Play, by Jacob Aagaard. He’s got a chapter on the concept with examples.
Really fantastic interview!
Thanks Matt! Hope to see you at future podcasts!
