As a small business owner that runs only Chevrolet and GMC pickups this channel is a diamond. I just wish we could have stuck with 4L80e for its reliability. The 6L90e has not been as good to me as 4L80e. I haven't torn a 6.6L gas engine down. Is it just a bigger displacement LS? Thats what we have in our two newest fleet pickups. All the rest are 6.0s.
Just replaced my plugs and wires on my 4.8 vortec, 41-162 plugs and upgraded 10mm wires, boi it woke this motor up so satisfied w/ the performance. By the way i thought #8 was going to be a challenge but from the top w/ the right set up it was easy.. LOL once again thanks for all your advice happy trails..
I have found that disconnected the wires from the coil and then twisting the boot on the plug a full turn helps a bit but its best to just buy a set of wires like you said. I always sell a set of wires anytime I do a set of plugs on these engines.
I use duralast wires with no problems, can't remember the plugs I got but its been running strong. I also reused the heat shields, I didn't want to risk having to replace the wires all the time even though they have a lifetime warranty.
Hello! I have a 2000 4.8 with 5 speed manual trans, it’s been a great solid truck for the 21k miles that I drive it in the year of ownership but it’s been having lots of power loss issues, I’ve replaced everything on the truck beside crank and cam sensors, ECT sensor, alternator, fuel pump and coil packs, everything thing else and I literally mean everything else on this truck has been done, as you can tell it was easier for me to make the list of things I haven’t done yet. I’ve gone thru every grounds did all the continuity tests needed. Knock sensors are bypassed tho because the bank 2 had low input but threw it into a limo mode, no audible tick or noise of concern, it has 262k miles on it now and the only other thing I know that’s been down was the new head or rebuilt head on the passenger side. Driver still looked original or not messed with at all when I did the valve cover gaskets, my cats are also starting to rattle quite a bit. I haven’t flown tested them yet but will soon, I’ll also be doing a leak down test for the valves and checking spark plug gap and fuel pressure as well, I’ve smoked tested it and no leaks at all not even in evap, all monitors clear just fine and I get the occasional knock sensor low input codes but drives the same. The codes sometimes are stored in the computer but does not set off the check engine light; it’s recently done this. Some more info on the truck is that it did have some mice nesting under the fuse box but I repaired all wires and has not been an issue there since. I’m coming at a dead end with this truck as i want the power back and I don’t want to throw any more parts at it, it has very slight surge in the idle but it revs up fine, it has been a little sluggish on rev too. I’m curious what someone thinks, it still has original O2 sensors and I haven’t cleaned them out yet, I used to chirp the wheels on my all terrain tires from 1st-2nd and 2nd to 3rd. It now it won’t even chirp the wheels on the 1st to 2nd pull.
My special tool to remove the spark plug wires was a combination of using my words and violence. They started breaking apart as I would pull them off with pliers. It seems to be the only tool to use. I said screw it a third of the way through and ripped them the rest out. This video has confirmed I wasn’t doing anything wrong. 2002 Silverado 5.8 Z71 285k
Are the 6 cylinder 4.3 engines supposed to have those heat shields, too? Mine doesn't have them, but I see replacement heat shields listed for sale on Rock Auto for that engine.
Ignition control module that's not on 5.3 that's on 5.7 that's why you can't find it. They were on 5.7 Vortecs which were on some 2000 trucks I believe.
Also watch out for the temp sensor by that first cylinder on the driver's side of ya break that in any way ....your gonna have some big problems cuz this engine uses coolant temp to adjust the air fuel ratio...just a friendly reminder bud your awesome and have real honest advice when it comes to these vortec engines! Thanks for the tips and tricks
Ohhh yea, trust me. I know about coolant temp sensor problems. Yeah, don't break that sensor or else the engine will just stall. Thanks I do my best and appreciate it.
Yo Matt can you help me with my truck. 2002 Chevy Silverado 4.8 v8 There’s a lot fuel in my oil pan and spark plugs. Ive changed injectors, fuel pressure regulator, spark plugs and wires. I can’t figure out where it’s coming from. I took out a spark plug and try to start it and a lot of fuel just comes out.
What injectors did u use. If you got cheap ones not from the store they can be knockoffs. You got wayyy too much fuel going into the cylinders. Maybe new O2 sensors.
My 1992 camaro has the same wire boot & similar metal heat shields. If you can grab the top of the boot and turn until the entire boot will turn, you will be far more likely to get the wire off without breaking. This does 2 things, first it breaks the adhesion of the boot to the plug, second it helps lossen the metal connector so it will be easier to remove. Just something I found that makes a huge difference when trying to remove the wires. I also tend to replace them sooner. By 100K miles you almost guaranteed to have had 1 or more bad wires for the last 20K miles. I tend to replace them at 45k to 50k miles. It reduces problems with removal, and helps not only keep your mpg the best it can be but reduces stress on the catalytic converter. Bad wires causes the cat to work harder, reducing it's life span.
HELLO I HAVE A 2009 CHEVY SILVERADO WITH THE 4,8 ENGINE i replace the plugs 'wires' new air filter '' AND NOW WHILE IM DRIVING ON HWY AT SPEED AROUND 40 TO 50 MPH ' FEELS LIKE THE ENGINE HAS MISS AND THE RPM WILL GO UP AND DOWN ' I PRESS THE PEDAL DOWN AT SPEED AROUND 60 ' IT DONT DO IT ANY IDEA WHAT COULD BE WRONG
I think it is more likely that BTC and ETH will retest the resistance to the upside and then fall. I will never go 100k miles on SPARK PLUGS,,,ESPECIALLY WITH TODAYS QUALITY OF PARTS,,,,ALL SHIT,NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE,,,HOW MANY ALTERNATORS,AC PUMPS,RADIATORS MUST ONE PERSON BUY,,,,,IM A MAINTENANCE FREAK,DONT LET ANYTHING GO,,,MY 03' SILVERADO HAS 225K,STILL LOOKS GREAT,RUNS STRONG,,,JUST WENT ON 21YRS WITH IT,,,,HAS NEVER LET ME DOWN,,,,,HAVE HAD BREAKDOWNS,FAR AND FEW BETWEEN,BUT ITS EXPECTED ITS A MACHINE,PARTS BREAK,WEAR OUT,,IT IS ALWAYS A PART THAT YOU DONT HAVE TO SERVICE WHICH PISSES ME OFF,,,,,HEATER HOSE CONNECTOR,OR SOME RELAY,BOTH THOSE CAUGHT ME AT A RED LIGHT JUST SITTING THERE,AND BOOM,HEATER HOSE AT FIRE WALL JUST BROKE OFF,,ANTI FREEZE EVERYWHERE,,,,,TOW GUY WAS ASKING ME IF I WANTED TO SELL IT,,,NOPE.ONE THING I NOTICED IS HOW MUCH MORE MAINTENANCE NEEDS TO BE DONE LIVING IN HOT CLIMATES,,,,HOLY CRAP THE SUN AND HEAT REALLY DO A NUMBER ON VEHICLES,,, JUST KEEPING UP WITH THE PAINT FINISH IS QUITE THE TASK.....AND ALL SEASON TIRES ARE BEST FOR HOT CLIMATES,,,,TIRES WEAR OUT QUICKLY WITH THE HIGH HEAT,,,,,,USE TO GET 6YRS+ OUT OF MY TIRES UP NORTH,NOW 3 IF IM LUCKY
I have had pretty good luck with first pull the wire off the coil(that end rarely has issues) then twist/spin the boot on the spark a few times then try to pull the wire with angle nosed pliers, usually works especially if the wire have been changed before but typically a factory set of wires will still fall apart even with all the tricks.
My special tool is a long set of needle nose pliers but the needle nose has a long curve which will rest on the motor and act like a fulcrum to easily remove the boots, even the stubborn ones. Hope this helps someone
@MattsShop wires were bad when I done them and were burnt into on many of them or fell apart when touching them but on a decent set they could be reused. Worked very well
Oddly enough, my 01 with 322k miles didn't break any of the plug end boots when I pulled them, but I did replace them as a few were crusty and cracking on the wire insulation.
I have an 01 z71 with the 5.3 I changed the plugs and wires after 230k for the first time. I didn’t run any better or get better mpgs after changing them. I was amazed. 😂
I've done plugs and wires at least once on my 2000 Silverado 4.8 Probably twice I don't recall any terminals coming off Maybe I just got lucky And I re-use the shields
I recently changed my spark plug wires, the AC Delco ones I bought were too short, 9.2 or 10 inches I needed 12 so i ended up buying a brand I was unfamiliar with from O'Reilly's.. what's up with that GM
The last time I changed plugs on a 5.3, I thought it all went badly, that I was missing a trick. Nope, next time I will start out how I finished last time, with broken plugs. The job is a PITA, get the good parts.
@@MattsShop I always use a good amount of dialectic grease on both ends. I think the grease helps keep the boots from getting hard more than keeping them from sticking. You have to pull the coil end first. Getting a full twist can be a trick in itself on 6 and 8. I just switched to a set of 10.2mm wires. The hardest part was getting the the wires locked on the plugs. Has to push the wires out to the end of the boots, squeeze them, push them on till they locked, and slide the boots back down over the plugs.

You're welcome! I keep telling people 41-162 works great! They always wake up them up. Glad it helped!
Your my favorite Chevy video Dude,,,,,I have experienced most of what you say,all true,,,keep up the good work, thanx
Shot a lil pb blaster at base of boots, twist n pull helps a bit sometimes
I have found that disconnected the wires from the coil and then twisting the boot on the plug a full turn helps a bit but its best to just buy a set of wires like you said. I always sell a set of wires anytime I do a set of plugs on these engines.
Yeah, I always try to spin them on the spark plug. They still seem to break on me.
2:44 Matty! I need to talk to you about the future! If you ever put the hood in service mode, be careful not to snap that ground strap.
LOL I know right? They should've made it longer.

Try and twist the wire at the spark plug end before you pull it off. It loosens it and you wont brake any, at least I haven’t.
Lol you got better luck than me. I always twist when I pluu. It doesn't help much.
That hood ground wire is starting to scream!😂
Hahaha
tips for the back spark plugs on a v8 its a damn pain even from under the truck
Are the 6 cylinder 4.3 engines supposed to have those heat shields, too? Mine doesn't have them, but I see replacement heat shields listed for sale on Rock Auto for that engine.
Mine don’t have it either it’s def not needed but it can help protect them from heat
I use a needle nose wire boot pulling tool and it works great no problems all.
Me to. Only had a problem with 1 wire. I just replaced it with 1 off my spare motor.
What if you break one and you don't have a spare?
Hey do u have a video on ignition control module? I got a 2000 chevy silverado 5.3 and I can't find ignition control module...please help
Ignition control module that's not on 5.3 that's on 5.7 that's why you can't find it. They were on 5.7 Vortecs which were on some 2000 trucks I believe.
@MattsShop all good thanks for the information

Wouldn't never cease work with new wires and plugs not spelled right but you know what I mean
You want dielectric grease on the electrical parts and it helps.

I prefer Denso plugs and wires on my LQ4.
Do the wires break when removing?
Always!!
I think they do, i believe he only said it about a dozen times though out the video.
Thanks Matt for the good tips on plugs. I got to replace the ones on my 5.3 this will help me. Laterrrrrrr
Awesome! Glad I could help! Laterrrrr
My special tool is a long set of needle nose pliers but the needle nose has a long curve which will rest on the motor and act like a fulcrum to easily remove the boots, even the stubborn ones. Hope this helps someone
Can you reuse the spark plug wires or does it destroy them?
@MattsShop wires were bad when I done them and were burnt into on many of them or fell apart when touching them but on a decent set they could be reused. Worked very well
I now use the Accel wires with the ceramic ends.
Oh yea? They run good?
Bro said the same thing over and over 😂
You didn't go any deeper about your compression test and mystery coolant leak. I'm curious what you found.
Seperate videos. Ohh you'll see. 😭
Vice grips is ur biggest friend doing this job, and angled pliers. & if u gotta remove the wheel go for it
Oddly enough, my 01 with 322k miles didn't break any of the plug end boots when I pulled them, but I did replace them as a few were crusty and cracking on the wire insulation.
How?!?! Lucky!
And I definitely save a couple wires and keep them in the truck
Had 1 rub through against the steering column once and was shorting out on it
Yeah, they are a real PITA but the good news is you only have to change them every 125,000 or so miles.
I have an 01 z71 with the 5.3 I changed the plugs and wires after 230k for the first time. I didn’t run any better or get better mpgs after changing them. I was amazed. 😂

Yup, exactly. It's not a very smart design if you ask me.
Take the wire off of the coil. Spin the wire on the plug until it spins freely then they come right off.
I've put 4 sets of wires on my 08 5.3. Haven't broke a 1. Always spin the wire on the plug.
This is a fact. I've changed several sets on my 08 avalanche not 1 broke. Always twist at least a full rotation before pulling.
You guys must have magic hands. I always do that they always break on me!
@@MattsShop I always use a good amount of dialectic grease on both ends. I think the grease helps keep the boots from getting hard more than keeping them from sticking.

Greetings: Another reason those engines R junk. Thx 4 the share
They're the best. You're welcome
@MattsShop Greetings: Vortec 1st and 2nd Gen...Not even close.
Wait you use the metal shield ? Why ? I believe you need put in the garbage , why you use again ?
Protects it from the exhaust heat.
