  • In this video, I review the new 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 43 AMG X253. I take a look at the M276 engine and explain why enthusiasts think that it's not worthy of the AMG name just as we see in the C43. I also briefly cover the performance, features, driving experience, and options on this GLC43.

    The GLC 43 engine responds quite nicely to tuning, getting to 480 hp / 528 tq on a stage 1 without any further bolt-ons. I'd call that pretty respectable.

    You are really overthinking the AMG badging. 3 letters can’t take away from the fact that this car is a rocket compared to 90% of cars on the road. The engine is phenomenal and probably the best in class. I drove V8s for years and this engine totally does it for me. The 63 is obviously incredible as well but in no way blows the 43 out of the water. It’s slightly better performance wise. Forget the 3 letters and focus on how it feels which is amazing. Why judge a car on anything else?

      I also test drove both and ended up going with the 43. Yes the 63 sounded better, but other than all out hard acceleration they felt nearly the same. I am also in an AMG car club and have been on several cruises in which most people drive 63 cars, for the most part when we are driving in a "spirited" manner, I am able to keep up until we are well within illegal speeds. I just don't think the 63 is worth the extra money it commands. My previous car was an E63 with the M156 V8 and other than the sound, I don't miss it. I truly don't miss the extra maintenance and vavletrain issues of the M156...LOL

    The mid level performance crossover market with the Audi SQ5, BMW X3 M440i, Porsche Macan S, and the GLC 43 hit a nice sweet spot imo. So I could care less if it's a "real AMG" or not. The guys at AMG purposely tuned this car so I’m gonna take their word for it.

    • @TheLumberJacked
      @TheLumberJacked 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree and most of the cars in the segment don’t have hand built engines either and no one bludgeons SQ5 owners over not having one. It’s almost like it’s a marketing thing…it kinda is, but since they only do it to engines that really are highly desirable to begin with no one is burying it because it’s hand built, they buy it because it’s a special vehicle with special levels of performance. No one calls out BMW M car owners for not having hand built engines…no one really cares…TRULY, it’s just a nice bonus. I’d take one in a heart beat but I was one of the peasants that could “only” buy a GLC AMG43…Love that car. My wife just hated the X3 M40i…could not believe BMW wouldn’t have adjustable height seatbelts 😂😂😂

      I appreciate your comment. And all good points. Only “True AMG” snobs would beat on other “BABY” AMG owners by trumpeting “hand built” as far superior. Every time a Mercedes gets beaten by a BMW “M” car they are being beaten by a non-hand built engine, no one really cares, it’s a marketing gimmick IMHO because those engines like BMW engines have their issues just like all the rest. I do not believe there is anything special imparted to the engine due to hand building other than every nut and bolt is tightened to spec which is a good thing. I just find it funny that “hand built” becomes the main tool used to bludgeon peasants with baby AMG’s when basically every other desirable car brand in this price segment doesn’t hand build the engines either and somehow they do just fine. I’m not saying I wouldn’t take a hand built Merc engine, I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t, but I’m just saying that “baby AMG” owners should hold their heads high because they do have something special regardless of the snobbery. They are fun, they are sharp handling, they feeeeel special, and they are bloody fast. Maybe not AS fast but close enough that they present an enticing option. I myself am a peasant with a mere baby AMG (GLC AMG43) and every day I get to drive it, I love that car. It’s a privileged for sure and I’m thankful for it. But at no point when I shopped it against the competition did I think to myself, Geee…I wish the BMW X3 M had a hand built engine, or some vehicle like that…not once.

    This hand assembled engine marketing is for snobs, so they can feel better. In fact humans will make mistakes, while a robot will be perfect each time. In fact, the 43 engine is so good Mercedes has to dial back the boost to 12.8 psi only so it does not encroach on the C63. Buy a JB4 and and enjoy the car. C43 is 200 lbs lighter than C63 and a hoot to drive. Increase tire pressure on the back and it will drift like rwd. Lastly, the torque converted transmission is great. It is smooth around town and quick enough for spirited driving.

    Watch current video on the AMG engine production plant where the one man-one engine builds take place.
    There are a lot of machines and robots involved torquing bolts/performing tests, etc that are completely automated, surprising to see how much of that engine is built by robots.

    I’m in the market for an SUV in this price range. I’ve never really been a fan of Mercedes but I like the GLC 43 AMG. I personally don’t care if the engine is hand built - in 2022 machine built engines are probably consistently better than human built - everything assembled exactly to spec. When I was growing up anti-reversion headers were popular because they ensured better exhaust flow - so I don’t like hearing the cracks and pops because that’s exactly what you don’t want in terms of performance - reminds me of a ricer LOL. Maybe later this year for me - still researching.

    The marketing strategy is making people care about the hand built engine thing to the point people tank them in reviews over the issue…yet no one does that to any other brand. What Merc did is what every manufacturer does. Yet reviewers don’t bemoan the lack of a hand built engine when comparing X5M’s to GLS 63s’s why? Because everyone knows it doesn’t actually matter. Not really…the only people that get beaten up for non-hand built engines are other Mercedes owners and that’s pretty shitty. I find it hilarious. There are improvements to this engine BTW, the HP was upped as well from 2019 models it’s a superb performer and has the best sounding exhaust of all of the brands of a similar year because these engines are al pre OPF. That alone makes them worth the price of admission as well as the performance exhaust option. The engine has been tuned by AMG, the AMG variant is the only one that has 385/384 hp/tq, the variants of this engine used in other higher end luxury models (i might add) have 335hp approx. so it’s unfair to say this is strictly and off the shelf engine slapped into it from another vehicle. Because it’s not true. Larger turbos, larger inter-cooler, different head bolts and valve bits. Hell, this engine has a 3 stage centrifugal PCV valve separator that prevents the back of the valves from getting coked up with carbon. But reviewers don’t actually do the work necessary to figure this out before a review, instead we get the equivalent to a brochure read to us and comments about the poor peasants who OnLy get a twin turbo V6…poor people. Maybe one day they can afford a real car 🙄🙄🙄. Stop buying into the marketing and I would sure hope when or if you review a BMW X3 M40i you point out how “GaSp”, they use an engine also used in other vehicles (deduct point because reasons)…but we don’t see pearl clutching happening in those reviews do we? No. It’s mind blowing that a car can’t just be reviewed on its own merits and instead a tale of woah and brand dilution is really what this is about 😂😂😂. Exhausting.
