- On March 19, 2019, following a short explanation on how we can protect ourselves from spirits, His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche kindly consented to answering questions from students and followers all over the world. For two hours, Rinpoche answered questions on everything from how we can improve our loved ones' affinity to Dorje Shugden, to whether ritual items are necessary in our practice, to how we can cope with the loss and passing of our loved ones.

Part one was my first TH-cam video from Tsem Rinpoche. When I listened again 5 years later, Tsem Rinpoche has passed away. His command of the US English language is really very helpful for people trying to understand Tibetan Buddhism. His explanation is open, non secretive and easy to digest and apply. Wish Rinpoche a swift return as he sees fit. 🙏
Same sentiment here. Recently, I came to realise that Tsem Rinpoche had passed in 2019. I used to hear his teachings many years ago and now that I am Iistening to some of his teachings again, I can feel his tremendous compassion for all beings deeply. An intensive detoxification therapy would greatly help you e.g. colon cleansing, Ayurvedic pancha karma. These need to be done at least once a year.

krystalopale You nailed it! It’s better in that way rather than having war for years. The best part is sending them love as they are suffering, all of us are suffering.
The strongest spirit attacks are those that will attempt to push you to commit suicide. So it's not really the flickering of the lights, or bad dreams, or physical objects being moved. Those would scare everyone to a certain degree but won't push anyone to commit suicide. There's nothing an angry spirit likes more than for you to kill yourself so that you could take it's place at a certain spot or location, or to join them. If the spirit is not acting on it's own and is being sent by someone with hostile intention, there's also nothing that person would like more than to see you die. We hear many cases of suicides from depression, and while some are legit medical conditions or chemical imbalances in the body, others are spirit induced. You see, spirits can access our memory like humans accessing a computer drive. So it can dig up memories of say your traumatic past, if you have any, and keep it playing in your head. And if you fall for it you'd kill yourself from "depression." That's one example. So if nasty memories of your past arise out of nowhere, like spontaneously, watch out. That's one sign. Recite Dorje Shugden's mantra to dispel it. The mantras are Very Powerful.

I can relate that human beings and invisible spirits are the same just different in forms. We must be compassionate, understanding and tolerance towards malevolent spirits and unhappy human beings. I have met people who has been a very unhappy and toxic person, while I try to be compassionate and understanding, the other party will keep attacking and harm me making me very unhappy & miserable too. Is there a way to break this vicious cycle? I just wanted to work in peace.

In one of the letters someone referenced Voodoo as dark magic. It’s like Buddhism. Please don’t stereotype based on racist bias. It’s an African traditional religion meant to heal. Anyone can make anything dark, but that is not the heart of religion or spiritual practice. Bless you 🙏🏽❤️🌺

In relation to what this Rinpoche was saying about the possibility that things can start happening if a person starts to use these mantras/prayers. This is similar in Christianity. I have seen comments from Christian and/or Catholic people saying they feel they are being 'attacked' by demons when they pray, and also a video mentioning it. I think one of the functions of some of these spirits is to get them to go away from their religion, and even to get them to break the rules. For example, some of the material I have looked at from Catholic/Christian people they suggest that the demons want people to sin so that they end up in hell, and then they will have more company when they also end up there. I think Buddhism also understands this. For example the Buddha was tempted by mara demons when he was close to enlightenment. So they tried to make him have fear, or tempted him with various desires to stop him reaching enlightenment. I also have a Buddhist book that suggest when dealing with 'demoniac spirits', to rebuke them by saying you will not break the precepts/rules, and go back to the one-pointed mind. So I can see parallels here between the different belief systems, even if Buddhists do not believe in a god.
Some of them probably do not like more pure energy. I have also seen in an introduction to the Ratana Sutta, there was sickness in a particular town and the Buddha visited and when he approached all the spirits left as soon as he approached that town, that were lingering around the area due to sickness. In a similar way, Jesus was able to drive spirits out from people who were afflicted by spirits and sometimes they would cause sickness. It should be noted that some people who might be considered to have mental illnesses, might actually be afflicted by spirits. For example, there are some people who hear voices and usually they would be considered to be mentally ill. Try looking up Jerrry Marzinski, or Windows on the World channel here on TH-cam. Maybe there will be some way that Buddhists can help these people. Christian people might also, if they have some way to deal with spirits or exorcise them, but I think often there is no awareness or understanding of the issue.

Should we send bad/negative energy back: no, I agree with this also. I do not think this is a good idea because this could be bad karma. A very useful mental technique I have come across is that we can try to imagine a shield of energy around us. So one way would be to imagine a positive white light surrounding us and protecting us, and this can help. Some people think there is an 'aura' around us that we can use to protect us. I don't know exactly if this is true. However, I think the idea is useful. The Rinpoche in the video suggests imagining a golden light of the divine being he mentioned, at the top of the head. I am not sure about using these beings myself, but I think a similar method would be to imagine a golden light at the top of the head and radiating out. What I would suggest actually, and this is an idea I have come across in researching the issue, is to visualise layers of different colours. So we can imagine first a layer around us that is a deep blue, and that is for spiritual protection of ourselves and this is very powerful. Then the next layer is a golden light that is a positive energy that shines out. If you wish to go further with the idea then there can be another layer that is white that reflects any bad energy or spiritual attacks. Alternatively, this layer can be like a silver/mirror effect and reflect back any negative energies, but we don't want to send it back to the person (or spirit/demon) sending it to us. Instead we can either imagine neutralising/dissolving it, or send it up to the sky or even to God (if you can believe in one). The third (neutralising) layer could alternatively be something like purple/electric violet to clear any invading negative energy.
This technique of imagining protective shield can be difficult in that it requires constant attention and focus, and so it can be hard work mentally to maintain it. It will not keep spirits out if they are strong (as with the one I am dealing with), but it can be a useful tool and it is important to try to manage our own energies even if a spirit is sometimes invading our energy, body, and space.

Truthfully, I haven't finished listening to your talk. But I plan to. However, I should like to add that I, humbly am a Buddhists Seeker who, as an American ,has had to deal with what is called, in the West... the mark of the beast. Believe it or not. For it challenged my faith and humble practice. Forgive me if say. unless you, or me, or anybody can protect the sanctity of their original faith and culture...the well of others notwithstanding, then prepare for pain that is neither eastern or Western. And most certainly is not anthropomorphic. For the mark of the beast has sought to preempt my very thinking process. Name calling as it does itself as Anti Christ. As a struggling Buddhist this registers as pain... despite my Mindfulness and Sila Samadhi and Prajna. Om Ah Hum
I feel emotional pain and struggles in your messages. However, I’m glad that you have something to hold on to, a seeker in Buddhism now. Take your time. Buddhism is more than just religion and it has more, be it psychology or for the benefit of your physical well being. I would rather check and examine my thoughts and well being instead of thinking as a whole right now. I hope you will do so too. We must first find healing within ourselves and then only we can benefit others. Are you attach to a Buddhist centre now? It will create a positive energy in your life . It’s like Group karma. It’s more positive than to journey alone in the beginning. That’s why Buddha has recommended that there should be at least 4 persons gathered together for Dharma. The synergy is different.

Practising Dharma can make you stronger: yes I think this could be the case. As with the previous video, it is important not to have fear, and this will make you stronger. This I have also found with my own situation. Same as in the Bible where there are many references to the idea of not having fear. We were not made to have fear. Just like we were not made to feel depressed or want to kill ourselves. I forgot to mention this in my previous comment. It is not natural to feel depressed or want to kill ourselves. If that happens to anyone then they should remember this. In the Buddhist precepts it says not to take a life, and some people will extend that to animals as well. In the same way it can be extended to say we should not kill ourselves, and if we ignore that we go against the Buddhist precepts. Similarly, in Christianity, the Ten Commandments say not to kill, and that includes ourselves, I believe. If we are connected to God (or to use the language in this video, divinity) then we should not feel the need to kill ourselves.
Yes, compassion is strength also, and is connected to the same fearlessness. As with the meditation I have done, great compassion is needed to experience this fearlessness. When I experienced a very fearful place in my mind/brain I had to have great compassion, and coupled with the force of mindful concentration I had developed in meditation, I was then able to confront this fearfulness and it was gradually dissolved. It was not easy but it can be done. It could be said that a great faith is needed.

Can spirits affect thoughts or mood - like having more violent or sexual thoughts/behaviour or anger or depression. Again, similar to some Christian views on this - they can try to make us feel bad, or demons can want to cause division between people and create arguments or they represent an energy of anger/violence. I guess the biblical view might be that some of these spirits/demons resent humans and want to cause us harm out of malice or spite. Why would they have this view? Maybe because they rejected god at some point and have no body, and humans were given a body and not them. I also think it is possible they can experience what it is like to have a body by coming into our own bodies and occupying it - just by connecting in with the senses we have. So they might be able to feel some warmth for example, or hear what we hear or see what we see even. They also want the chi energy we have. I have felt this with the spirit that is connected to me. Spirits can be a big drain on your energy, probably whichever type of spirit it is. It could be possible that some of these spirits may have had a body in the past, or maybe some haven't. In a way the question of whether they have a body could be understood from a Buddhist point of view of karma - having a human life is usually considered to be good karma, but if the spirits have not been good then they will not have that karma, and that may be true especially if they disobeyed god because then there would be a kind of de-merit applied by god in response.
It's too late to suggest improvements, but I could do without the repetition. This two hour video is probably 90 mins of repeating phrases. However, I can attest to the accuracy of this information.
Instead of relying on Dorje Shugden, can our personal Yidams help us?

His Holiness the Dalai Lama has discouraged the practice of supplication to Dorje Shugden. I appreciate the practice to subdue struggles, suffering and negative influences, however, when a highly respect spiritual hero such as His Holiness urges others to not practice the Dorje Shugden invocation, it's best to listen to him. If you serve spirits, they wil serve you; if you don't serve them, they will try to harm you. They are therefore like little children, so why pay attention to them? I practice Buddhism and respect the Buddha, and make offerings to him.

dharma protectors can be enlightened beings. even shak buddha acknowledged certain practices and spirits bc of the realities of the world. i am glad you 'practice buddhism' in the lowest vehicle. dharma is great. but spirits and tantrayana are not so simplistic as if you pray - serve, no pray-harm. no. its not that at all.

I really really want to know what if the spirit is an aborted child of 30 years ago? It didn't want to suffer like this. It didn't suicide. It didn't want to be so unhappy. It doesn't want to have such big sufferings. What can I do? Did I make it stuck here and cannot leave? I really don't know what to do. I get strange things and many body press over the years. My health is also detiriorating. I am so sad and regretful for what I had done over these years.
