Mastering the Mohawk skating techniques will give you a huge advantage on the ice, especially in the offensive zone.
If you struggle with Mohawk skating make sure you are working on your edge work, but it may also be your hip mobility.
If you think it's your hip mobility holding your mohawk skating back check out our Hip Fix Program: www.hockeytrai...

Off ice drills are so important. You have to practice the stances off ice with hip, groin, and knee stretches and strengthening exercises. You can even practice getting in and out of the stances with your skates on if you have good blade guards. Practice off ice is critical to not getting injured on the ice. A slip or lost edge on the ice can result in an injury quickly especially for older players lol
Bingo. And it’s easy to do this if your hips open up easily, I feel most kids get a “put your legs in this position” ... it’s easier said than done. Show me HOW. That will definitely be off ice, some sort of yoga/ Pilates/ stretching.
Stretching is for sissies
I’ve been doing hip and knee stretches guess I should prob get in the actual position thi
I resemble this comment! Any suggestions for off ice drills?
The rink long heel to heel glide would be an awesome goal celebration
Sidney's skating and movement around the net changed the game, which makes him my favorite player of all time
The fact Crosby has a movement named after him is crazy
They’re called Mohawks but Crosby does them so much people just call it that
This guy is unbelievable
He really is 👍
True !! Is there anything he can't do ??
I’m as flexible as a lump of Granite. No way I’m Mohawking in a straight line
You might need our Hip Fix: www.hockeytraining.com/hip-fix-program
Just TH-cam mohawk excercise free instead of paying $500 for this snake oil link
But can he do it in goalie pads is the real question 🤔
LOL what? Are you trying to circle your net Jens??
@@TheWitchOvAgnesi I can't even keep pucks out of the net. What makes you think I can even skate around the net?
@@Jens95 LOL, well, you certainly proved that you can't do that over this past summer. :-) Ha!
OK, concussions are no laughing matter... (trust me, been there, done that, scary as fuck). In all seriousness, how are you doing with regard to the concussion? Did you decide to retire? Or are you still playing?
Ok gr00m3r
Do a lot of groin and knee stretches before doing this. It helps a lot!
Yup, we've got a Hip Fix Program with some great exercises for this: www.hockeytraining.com/hip-fix-program
I was going to say, i cannot get my hips open like this at all. I've tried. I think it's lack of flexibility
Well , you should be doing deep stretches the night before.
Love Steve Baek's drills. Challenging but realistic, and nicely progressed. This video is a bit advanced if you've never done a Mohawk before but great if you have a basic Mohawk turn
down and need to up your game. Definitely going to use this to challenge mine to progress (riding straight, outside edge, etc.).
That’s awesome, so smooth! He makes it look so easy!
Steve is excellent at skating / demonstrating
I just saw a clip of Kristian pospisil showing the strength of this maneuver during a rush! Im learning this!
Man, I need to practice more.
Dude’s great.
Tnx Steve and Kevin
Yup, he's a great skater and coach!
This skill keeps you facing a passer or a target, very ready to shoot and moreover while you're still moving. It is a killer tool when needed.
Great demonstration Steve!! I wish my coaches, back in the day, had an ounce of this ability (both skating and teaching).
Holy shit so smooth Steve!
Another fun way to stop fast (and skate in general) is what’s called a ‘Mohawk’ in hockey. Basically, open up the hips so that both inside edges are being used, body facing towards the centre of the turn (a good way to learn is to try to build speed by pushing with the leading and trailing feet) I find it nicer than a sharp turn because your body will naturally want to fall towards your hands rather than towards the outside edge, so it feels much less sketchy to turn tight. It’s a really fun technique to skate in general with too!
A skating move that I can actually do!
Outstanding training!
How do you get more flexibility cause I can do a Crosby with my right leg and not my left
Off ice drills. You have to practice the stances off ice with hip, groin, and knee stretches and strengthening exercises. One leg squat, one leg strength, and one leg balance drills help a lot for this and just general agility and bodily intuition. You just can intuitively put yourself in positions/improvise while moving with one leg stretch drills
Very informative thank you
I’m not sure why, but I walk with my toes pointed out and this was a way of turning that I would do since I was really little, I was never taught and it made it really easy. My squirt coach would always scream at me for it but my bantam coaches liked that I could do it.
Great demonstration great skating
What off ice drills can I do to practice this ?
Most people don't have the mobility to do mohawks correctly...but we can strive to achieve!
Makes it look so easy 😂 so smooth.
Used to do this when I was like 8, I'd to watch figure starters do this trick for various turns and coasting and applied it to hockey. Never realized it caught on.
Wow. I shall try this on my quad skates.
I love skating. Unfortunately due to ankle injuries playing football I do not have the flexibility to Mohawk and transition properly. I have been skating for a few years now and struggling playing roller hockey and ice hockey. Non the less I still love skating and hockey.
what cut do you have on your skates?
Great video and execution!
amazing drills...awesome vid as usual
Could you please analyse Marek Daloga skating style? He is not very known player, never played in North America, but I heard his skating style is very fast and unique.
How to you get that flexibility tho? Is it mostly in the hips or ankles?
It's a combination of both.
You can work on your hip mobility with these two routines:

th-cam.com/video/_IENhH_0cog/w-d-xo.html

Mohawk is one of the simple trick !! I am not able to doing a hockey stop which is bloody hard !! Any suggestion?
One foot at a time
Transfer weight to toes when you rotate your feet 90 degrees for the stop.
“That’s it.” 😂
Seriously though, good video.
Mohawking is easy, I’ve been doing it for over 50 years and it’s a second nature for me so you get really good rotation and mobility is far broader. I can still do it a 65 years old.
someone is going to end up like Mikko rantenan
He makes everyting look very easy. I think his first moves he does takes quite a bit of skill to even get there.
Amazing skater makes it look easy in actual life this is no easy drill
the problem is how do your legs in that position.....been trying that for a long time and i can't set my feet like that.....
You most likely have hip and/or ankle mobility issues. We've got something to help: www.hockeytraining.com/hip-fix-program
Which camera are you shooting?
It looks like a heel to heel(spread eagle) text book!! 👍👍👍
wonderful!!!!!!!!!
Is this in London?
Yep 👍
Cool video
when you are pushing with the mohawk are you pushing on your heal or toe?
For me it's middle to toe. At least on the inside. Maybe more middle of the blade for the outside edge work that he demonstrates at the end. I found that getting too much toe on the push makes me lose my balance. Also, it's not a necessarily hard push. This is a move more geared towards mobility versus speed or power.
This is great thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Think I can do it once I figure out how to stretch my hips twice as much ☹️
oh how i wish. respect!
I cannot do it
Is he wearing shin pads under? I am volunteering as an assistant coach now and need to knee often and my knees hurt lol.
Haha grab some ref shin pads
@@hockeytraining thank you! and apologies for the double post in another vid.
Any videos for stretching to help with the move?
We have posted plenty of dryland videos and written articles to accomodate hockey players in this area.

When I try the mohawk, I get really tired in my legs. I think I might be pushing too hard to keep my balance idk. Any tips?
Hey Miguel, this may be because of tight hips. Check out this program: www.hockeytraining.com/hip-fix-program
I had the opposite problem back when I played as I used them too much as I was lazy and didn’t want to do a standard pivot as Mohawks took less energy for me to do.
When I Mohawk I end up doing that figure skate move where you spinning move where you spin really fast
Hunter Morin thanks
I should've watched this video before I tried the Mohawk, because now I gotta wait for my hair to grow back.
Gotta sing Lady of Spain while doing this,...just before you get laid out flat on ice.....while wearing a I LOVE MIKE BABCOCK shirt...!!!
genuinely fell over trying to keep a straight line
This guy Steve is ridiculously flexible Only one human in 1000 can do that
If flexibility and mobility is an issue for you check out our Hip Fix system - www.hockeytraining.com/hip-fix-program
I can Mohawk well left foot forward, but I can barely do it right foot forward. I noticed that all lefties are better left foot forward and righties are better right foot forward.
You gotta develop the requisite hip flexibility before you can do this.
When are you ever going to mohawk in a straight line in a game
It's also very rare to skate in a straight line from end to end with no disruptions during a game as well and yet it's a very effective training method for speed and conditioning. When you over expose yourself to a motor pattern it becomes much easier in a game setting.
But how often do you even use a Mohawk in a game
Ishaan Sohi I see some guys I skate with Mohawk all the time. They like to receive passes in the Mohawk so they are open to make a pass immediately. They don’t stay in the Mohawk for a long distance, but they do it all the time like its second nature. Amazing to watch.
@@hockeytraining Hello, Hockey Training!
My issue is that I can only do this by leading with my left foot: tried doing it with my right foot, and it always results in my right foot transitioning to backwards
I think it stems from the fact that the ice rink in my town is counter-clockwise, so I learned most things in only one direction
How can I fix this problem?
@@ishaansohi6601 As often as you need to son... This is a maneuver for mobility and positioning. It's not for speed or power necessarily. And as Austin Holthaus says here, it can be a great help for catching an errant pass while keeping you in a shooting or passing posture.
Anyone know any good stretches to be able to bend your feet in a straight line like he was?
squat down with your heels pointed in and your toes pointed out. Keep doing it until you can do it with your feet in a straight line. It will take some time
We created the Hip Fix Program for this: www.hockeytraining.com/hip-fix-program
On my kid‘s team they would stand facing the boards and slowly try to stretch so their feet would eventually get (more or less) flat against the boards. It‘s a process, but eventually they almost all got it.
Ok
80% of the NHL players wouldn't be able to pull it off this cleanly. I used to get trained by Cindy Bower during summers and her mowhawks weren't this over killed lol.
👍👍👍👍👍круто!!!!!
Yeah I don’t have the mobility for this 🥲
We can help with that! Check out our programs here: www.hockeytraining.com/programs/
@@hockeytraining no thanks
Big misnomer: when you hold the edges they're called a SPREAD EAGLE, look it up. A mohawk is where you change feet and go edge to edge, inside/inside or outside/outside forward/backward or backward/forward. And when hes doing that last drill his back foot is on the inside edge 🙄🤐
Totally true. They use the terms the same way in rollerskating
Very true. But I don't think the title is misleading since the mohawk is used to get in and out of this position (especially since the word is being used like a verb).
On a separate note, it is racist and culturally-appropriating to use the term Mohawk at all...
Is that the move he does before flopping?
It's the move he does before he lifts the Stanley Cup over his head
I had to scroll far down in the comments to see Crosby hate. Times are changing I guess.
👍👍👍
Lol my hips are messed up so I’ve just been able to do that naturally ever since I could skate. I have a hard time turning right with crossovers, no problem turning left.
2:42
Ya I mean as a nearly 50 year old my knees TOTALLY can do that.
Your knees can do it. Its your hips that won't be flexible enough
51 y.o. here... and I'm hardly limber... but I can do this. Takes time and practice is all. This guy doesn't look that young either.
SpikeFlea you can run a straight line the length of the rink?
Ron Froehlich knees hips whatever. Point being you don’t get out on the ice and rip your feet into a straight line.
@@humancentered3447 Can I do a straight line the length of the rink? No. As consistently and as nicely as this guy? Of course not. I'm not a professional power skating instructor like he is and I'm not on the ice 7 days a week.
But I can get into this position and glide the length of the rink with some swerving and minor adjustments. And I can get it fairly close to straight between lines if that's all I'm doing (which is usually all I'm trying to do anyway). Maybe just practice with smaller distances at first.
OK, first of all, this is a figure skating move that has been used for decades, Crosby didn't build that. Second of all, players in check leagues need to be careful when they use this. You are opening yourself up for a big hit in the wrong situation. And make sure you get it down before you start screwing with it in a game. Also, there is a bit of a slowdown when you go into it. Just things to be aware of.
All that said, it's a useful technique just like any other improvement in your skating ability. And this demonstration is definitely amazing.
Like you just said figure skaters do it. No many hockey players do it. How many fend of checks at full speed like crosby doing it? Not many I'll tell you that
That’s pretty cool but my skating skills aren’t that good
It's because you haven't tried that yet.
Marc-Etienne Mercier I have though
Could we get a coach I can understand? Holy fuck
That move is hard to just try to pull off. Now do it with big guys hammering on you, that's what separates the superstars from the good and the great. Today's players have incredible skating skills.
That’s grand but not everyone has that movement in their locker maybe some off ice exercises should of been mentioned first

Hockey Training oh hello! 🙂
Mohawk? There was already a name for this skating move.
Well, guys, to be honest, if you want to have such hips mobility, quit watching videos and put in some years in ballet classes of hips mobility.
Yeah, it takes years.
Ahhh....yeah.... I mean that's a great video but the skill level needed to even attempt that drill is pretty far advanced.
This is called the spread eagle, not the mohawk. The mohawk is a forwards-to-backwards transition where you pick up one foot, open your hips like the spread eagle, and then step onto the back foot while picking up the front foot.
Jonathan Dahlen is master at this. Crosby is very slow at this technique. Precise and effective but slow. Dahlen creates incredible speed and is untouchable while skating like this.
How THE HELL can he get his feet in that position? Lol
Haha, if you need help check out our Hockey Hip Mobility workouts at the website
More like Jeff Skinner
Nah, it's crosbys move. Skinner couldn't hold his jock strap
Obviously the cry baby is a better player, but watch Skinner, he goes heel to heel on every shift.
@@redlights1585 calling Crosby a crybaby in 2019? Someone's a little out of the loop, you should know since he spanks your dogshit Sabres every season
@@him8012 Yeah, Crosby didn't invent this, nor does he own it fanboy.

This is amazing content and it will make me a better skater, thank you! That being said, it's 2019, the Mohawk are a people/tribe. It's super easy to call this a side-surf; lets make hockey more inclusive.
Wools literally no one thinks that the Mohawk turn has a offensive name one should accommodate for you just because you don’t like the name
OK you SJW duster.
@@tarekhussein3109 I really hope this kid is kidding, but he probably isn't. What's far more offensive and disgusting is how virtually all traces of the Native American population are going forgotten because people like him who are serious have decided that mascots are "offensive" and books need to be rewritten. I used to think far more about the native tribes and respect them as a child when we saw the Indian mascots run onto the field, or on street signs or in mottos, team names or games (like Cowboys and Indians - the cowboys didn't always win). Now, I only rarely think about them because they've all but been eliminated from over everyday lives and consciousness. Kind of makes you wonder who the real enemy of their nations are today, and who is actually putting the final nails in their coffin...
SpikeFlea and you’re calling me a SJW I know native people have it harder than most people but it doesn’t mean we have we have to change the name of a turn because you two only find it offensive, don’t you accuse me of racism because I have a different opinion you snowflake liberal.
SpikeFlea why do you think you are helping the native community by changing one name. What is changing one name gonna do probably nothing for them they don’t need people to say we recognize you and change the name of the Mowhawk turn who is that helping
Sorry .. but Jeff Skinner is way better at this than Crosby
I don't think calling it Mohawk is very sensitive to the natives. Call it something else. Call it the Sydney.
How to you get that flexibility tho? Is it mostly in the hips or ankles?
videomakerdk mostly in the hips, it’s important to open your hips wide, and stretch before hand. I learned it in a public skate session when I thought of it as opening your hips instead of your legs. Another good tip is to Turn your body to face where the opening is too.
@@shjmo Thanks man!
