    I have family in Maine and have been looking at land up there to retire to but I live in Virginia. I will warn you that while you own the power pole and wires from the road to your domicile realize any repairs required if say a tree falls on it will fall to you.
    Also you are in Maine where to use a Southern expression most folks are "fixing to" get stuff done. Not a lot of sense of urgency but really good folks. It takes a while to make a friend in Maine but once you do it is for life. Best wishes in your new spot.

    Welcome to Maine. Laid back is very true. I moved from a area of low crime but here in Aroostook when to pull up to a grocery, mall etc. and most of the vehicles are running with no one in them, you know you're in a different environment. P.S. ditch that Oregon hoodie.

      @@mic4902 Part of the problem is that sellers are jacking up their prices hoping a Californian will pay it. We've been looking in Tennessee, as well. I had my eye on a house that was priced around 200K. After about 2 months, the price changed to 800K! I couldn't believe it!! We're not rich, and we're retired. It makes me sick that ppl in other states think Californians are all rich and are willing to pay astronomical prices for their houses. We have many other reasons for wanting to leave the state and go elsewhere. At this rate, we may end up staying or finding a patch of snow outside of a bears cave in Alaska. The bottom line is GREED.

    So many people come here from out of state thinking it's so cheap to buy/build. But the long term costs make it difficult for most to stay. So many brand new empty huge homes sit abandoned and for sale cuz they can't afford to actually live there.

    • @mic4902
      @mic4902 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zxcccccc1 there are currently thousands of homes in some stage of foreclosure across the state. That's one thing that happens to them. Go particularly up North and you can also find ruins of old buildings everywhere too. Many utilize mobile homes to keep their taxes lower. Finally, plenty of places are seasonal rentals, because it's more economical/lucrative for those who otherwise could not work up here.

    • @annelarsen100
      @annelarsen100 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zxcccccc1 really all depends on what part of the state and what someone's expectations are when moving here. I live in a rural tourist town. People love to visit in the summer and love what it has to offer and visit every summer so they build a home. Then winter hits and the population drops by 75% and all the cool places/restaurants shut down for another 9 months. Alot of people from away don't understand that.

Something that you are going to have to get used to are the insane amounts of deer ticks and protecting yourself from Lyme disease. Black flies and mud season, week long power outages ( make sure you have a generator ) car inspections, higher cost for car insurance and very long winters. You'll want to get to know your neighbors because life in Maine is tough and you'll find yourself needing some help and advice from your neighbors on how to get through, tips and tricks of Maine living. Get yourself some wool socks !

    Great video, made me laugh, we also have building codes in our town in Maine...just one. 'If you build something, make sure it's 25 feet from your neighbors line." Now, with that being said, if you want to move to Maine, remember not to try and change it into where ever you came from. We had our neighbors dog bark non-stop for 7 years (we were grateful when it died!), and we never complained...why? Because when we wanted to run our chainsaw at 5 am building a house, the neighbors also didn't complain. Being a 'good neighbor' in Maine means basically ignoring a lot of stuff you may not have to put up with in other states, like...a junkyard out in front of your neighbors property...in Maine we are allowed 3 dead cars in the yard at any given time, and this really isn't enforced all that much. And those poles you own...yes, they are ALL yours...so when a tree comes down on them and they snap off, you get to buy another one...but each and every year you get a handy guide in your light bill that explains just how much that little mishap will cost you...LOL Well, that's my 2 cents (probably worth half of that), and welcome to the great State O' Maine!

I’ve only lived in busy cities so I’m pretty clueless about homesteading, but we can always learn the ways of rural life. I hope that commenter who said to stay in LA doesn’t represent the sentiment of most Mainers. I’ve always heard how friendly they are. BTW, there is a cute Diane Keaton movie, about a high power career woman who moves from Manhattan to Vermont, after she gets a surprise inheritance of a baby she has never met, from a distant relative. I heard too many horror stories and we passed moving to Maine. Taxes go up every year, which we are not use to in Pennsylvania. My retirement accounts would be taxed and I would need to pay state income taxes on my retirement. I currently pay no taxes on retirement or any state income tax. Then there is yearly taxes on your vehicles that you own. Medical care is lacking unless you are near the larger cities. Beautiful but expensive. Fuel costs to keep your home heated, buying wood in certain areas is non existent. Horror stories about the cable and electric companies and their rates. You need at least two sources of heat and a home generator is needed some places since you may be out of power for an extended period of time.

    • @ButcherBakerQuesoMaker
      @ButcherBakerQuesoMaker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Those are all valid points. The yearly taxes on vehicles isn’t forever if you have used vehicles, the income tax went down for us coming from Oregon. We are near Bangor so medical care is fine, we own a wood lot so firewood isn’t an issue. We bought a backup generator and our power is cheaper than it was in Oregon. Our property taxes are low because we have our property in tree growth which is a tax incentive discount on growing trees for lumber products. The cost of living is lower here for us so we are happy. Hope you found your forever place.

If you do what so many others have, and sell your home there for an exorbant amount, only to buy here for what seems like cheap to you, but is really the inflated prices that have grown over these recent years (that investors, speculators, and even Mainers blinded by money have encouraged), then all you're doing is chasing greener grass, but only for a time. In just the decades that I have lived here, it is this migratory habit of people from states like yours, and the original posters home state, that has quickly started turning Maine into exactly what you are running away from. You know that old saying that you cannot escape your problems forever, well, that's true. Maine will be another West Coast wasteland (enviromentally, financially, and politically) of its own in another, oh, I expect 10-20 years tops. The process was sped up just that much more over these past two years. Massachusetts and New Yorkers have been helping all the same, even long before the rest of those who think this is some long term safe haven.

I really do hate being so mean, but its just facts the more they come from those states the faster the state goes to hell. Look at texas, so many californians turning cities into shitholes like where they came from. The only inspector we saw was for the septic system. Lived in it four years and built a two level, (part in ground), super insulated, double walled, passive solar octagonal house. @@richardfiedler2201 check property taxes before you look at houses. Some areas to the south have astronomically high property taxes. North in “the county” meaning Aroostook county, the largest county in Maine has a lot less property taxes than the south. We live in Hancock county and they are doable but we wanted to be on the coast. The property market appears to be cooling off right now, and there are a lot more listings. Also foreclosures are going to start hitting the market so keep an eye out for those. And be warned, the locals can be very xenophobic towards outsiders because some people move here and try to change it into where they moved from. Our advice is to find a place where you could be happy to live and just live your life. The people here once you get to know them are extremely kind and wonderful, but can have a hard shell like a coconut. It’s not the open friendly way of the South. People go out of their way to help you if you need it. Good luck on your journey, we are getting ready to restart this channel, but living here has been way harder and busier than we ever thought. There is always something to get ready for.
