To all those who don't know what is going on, Paul Coll, the guy who was doing the diving, won the point. In squash, the ball has to be returned to the front wall, whether by a direct hit or by "boasting" it against a side or back wall for it to reach the front wall. The ball has to remain within the constraints of the court, which is comprised of the varying line all along the top of the walls, and the "tin" at the base of the front wall. Willstrop hit the ball into the "tin" at the base of the front wall, which the ball is supposed to stay above at all times, hence why Coll got the point.
Wow, I don't know what this is exactly, but that was amazing and that guy demonstrated some quick thinking and athletic ability, truly amazing what people can do sometimes
Raphael, this just happens to be a somewhat extreme example of the requirements of the sport. In general it is a bit more composed than was displayed by Paul Coll. Nonetheless, squash is an intense sport requiring incredible stamina, skill, speed, court awareness, tactics, and more. In my humble opinion it could take the prize as the sport with most technical stuff going on, invisible to an untrained eye.
i've never understood squash and still don't lol, it looks like 2 people were really bored in a room made this sport up and somehow miraculously people actually got into it. I like tennis and badminton but never had any interest in playing this at all.
Detz0325 Individual preference. But Squash isn't that difficult to understand. As a matter of fact, it is one of the most fittest sports on earth and really good for cardio, it helps you burn more calories than tennis or badminton. Rule is simple, in singles, a player hits the ball and his opponent returns the ball. Service should always hit the front wall first but all other returns may hit any of the walls as long as it eventually hits front wall for a player to return it. The ball can only bounce once on the floor before being returned.
if you have a level partner in the box with you, squash is just sick. you need fitness, endurance, perception, speed, agility, reflexes. its a really complex sport and after doing double units ( = 90 minutes ) i wanted to puke out my lungs and felt completely exhausted like in no other sport i've done ( badminton, tennis, tabletennis, football, street hockey, volleyball, beachball, athletics and what not else ). fun in squash depends on a level partner.
squash's origins are actually pretty close to what you described, from what I read it was created by prisoners who out of boredom started hitting the ball against walls of their prison :D
wiki sais: Squash was invented in Harrow School out of the older game rackets around 1830 before the game spread to other schools, eventually becoming an international sport. The first courts built at this school were rather dangerous because they were near water pipes, buttresses, chimneys, and ledges. The school soon built four outside courts. Natural rubber was the material of choice for the ball. Students modified their rackets to have a smaller reach to play in these cramped conditions.
By playing lets and strokes. basically awarding the point if you get blocked from playing the shot and awarding a let if your shot can hit the opponent.
Like he said lets or strokes but you have to master the movement of squash as you can see they allways return to the T the centre of the court after every rally so they can get the ball no matter where it is.also each corner has its own movement pattern to get there e.g. back corners you side step from ones out triple jump ish or stride but it takes years to master
If only those people were as good as people who watch them on youtube, making comments about what they should have done, when most likely they have no clue.:P
Squash is a great sport but the rallies are monotonous.....rallies like in this video are rare.....scoring and playing system need some attractive changes like tennis or badminton doubles (psst badminton singles is equally boring to watch)
I meant the game has been so much perfected by the players that rarely any ball goes down... Squash needs someone like Federer to bring something new in play....and yes tennis is very boring
I really agree. Played college squash in the U.S. 30 years ago (hardball) and love squash but now that I've been in Tennis the last 10 years, I look at squash and the rallies up the wall are boring beyond belief. There are some interesting matches with great shot making but in general, it is dull dull dull. Needs something. I don't know, maybe a lower tin and slightly faster ball (no not hardball).
Doesn't seem to be a smart tactic. Correct me if I'm wrong (having no knowledge of squash) but I don't think that much energy is worth spending for a single point.
Its is fun though and you cant just not get a point of say hey you get the rally like you play until you cant get it ,it just doesnt work like that also it is great fun and fun for the audience and reputation of the sport

Squash is a great sport but the rallies are monotonous.....rallies like in this video are rare.....scoring and playing system need some attractive changes like tennis or badminton doubles (psst badminton singles is equally boring to watch)
It is not monotonous if you are playing the rally. And tennis rallies are at least as boring with much longer gaps between.
I meant the game has been so much perfected by the players that rarely any ball goes down... Squash needs someone like Federer to bring something new in play....and yes tennis is very boring
