    Here is my review of the 6D ATR-1 and ATR-2 helmets. I first bought the ATR-1 last summer for a whopping $695 from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC. It was by far the most expensive helmet I’ve ever owned. Then RM ATV/MC sent me a $100 dollar rebate for the helmet and it was still the most expensive helmet I’ve ever used. I wasn’t crazy about the way it fit. It was very tight and I like tight helmets. I normally wear a medium with other brand, so I went with the medium here and it’s crazy tight. You might want to bump up a size when buying one of these helmets.
    The ATR-2 is the next evolution in their lineup and I think they made some good improvements and it seems to be more comfortable to wear. I like the ATR-2 better and I think it’s a very good helmet. I’m not sure if the technology they are employing is worth the $695 price tag or not, but if you want the best, there isn’t much better than this helmet.
    From www.6dhelmets....
    BROAD-RANGE PROTECTION
    The Most Compliant Energy Management Solution Available.
    From low to high velocity impacts the ATR-2 out- performs the market competitors by significant margins.
    The advanced ODS system is freer to manage shearing loads while managing linear compressions with a combination of isolation dampers and variable height EPP damping towers.
    LOW-THRESHOLD ENERGY
    Low Velocity Impacts are Far and Away the Most Common Type of Off-Road Accidents.
    Medical research has provided alarming conclusions surrounding the causes, severity, and long-term effects of concussions. Even seemingly minor concussions may have much more serious long-term effects on the brain.
    No other helmet company cared about low-threshold energy transfer before 6D brought the issue to light in 2013. This is the most critical performance range of helmets and covers all impact velocities below the certification standard’s requirements, for both linear and angular accelerations.
    Low-Threshold Energy is the most concerning problem facing the athlete today, illustrated in this simple graph to the right. As you can see, the energy transfer in all the competitive helmets referenced is at, or above the concussion threshold for an adult male and accurately represents the market.
    6D’s Omni-Directional Suspension (ODS) starts working the instant any force is applied to the shell. Its suspended inner liner travels and shears under crash impact loading thereby reducing energy transfer to the brain.
    TIME-TO-PEAK (TTP)
    Time is Critical in Reducing Energy Transfer to the Brain.
    Time-To-Peak (TTP) is the measurement of time (in milliseconds) it takes the energy of an impact to reach maximum (peak) G force. Deceleration time is the single most beneficial component of reducing the severity and magnitude of any impact. The more time, the less severe the energy transfer will become.
    6D’s advanced ODS technology buys time.
    ANGULAR ACCELERATION
    Angular Acceleration Force is the Primary Cause of Concussion.
    Angular acceleration (rotational force) is generated from oblique angle impacts to the helmet surface resulting in shearing, stretching, and tearing, of the soft tissues within the brain. The medical community has determined that angular acceleration is the primary cause of concussion, traumatic brain injury and worse.
    Laboratory testing at Wayne State University* has proven that a helmeted head sustained the same degree of angular acceleration as the un-helmeted head when subjected to identical impacts. This is because the helmet is directly “coupled” to the wearer’s head. One of the major benefit features of Omni-Directional Suspension (ODS) is that it effectively “uncouples” that relationship allowing the shell and outer liner to shear independently to the inner layer and the head-form; thereby scrubbing off a high percentage of the angular acceleration force.

    FYI, if you purchase a 6D ATR 1 or a ATR 2 helmet and you try it on and it is too tight you can change out the cheek pads to a smaller set. Just call 6 D and talk to a tech, give them your info and they will mail you a smaller set of cheek pads if its too tight, also if the helmet is slightly loose when purchased they have available a interior liner too make the fitment slightly tighter

    Nice work hopping around 4 days after the surgery! Be careful!
    Honestly, the price is comparable with a lot of other premium helmets, like the Bell Flex. One thing that actually makes it a pretty good deal is that these helmets are rebuildable. If you have a wreck, you can send it in and have 6D replace the impact protection bits for around 150 bucks.
    I have probably close to 150 hours on my 6D ATR1 and have had it rebuilt once. I’ve found the service to be absolutely excellent.
    Obviously the reason I had to rebuild the helmet is because of crashing head first a couple times. Nothing crazy, but I did find that I didn’t have mild concussion symptoms for the next few days, like I did with my previous helmets. To me, this is absolutely worth it. I work with my head (IT), so being out of it for a few days easily looses me a few hundred bucks.
    Fit was another reason I chose this helmet (it was between that and the Bell Flex). I find it extremely comfortable and can wear it all day. Everyone’s head is different though.

    This is a difficult debate due to the number of variables known and unknown. I wear Shoei now but will consider the 6D in the future. Personally there are only a few helmets to consider for piece of mind. That is Arai, Shoei (depending on the shape of head), 6D and Bell Moto 9. ANYTHING else is a serious gamble. Especially the Fox helmets, they just do not have the same quality control. Just not worth the risk and you may not be around to know you should have forked a few hundred extra bucks. Good video Kyle.

    Funny you should post this video about 6D when I am literally about to purchase the ATR-2. I have been following 6D for about a year now and I believe that they are a small company that has actually changed the game in terms of helmet safety with the rest of the field slowly but surely following. I think that the size of the company probably has something to do with the high price of the helmet & technology behind it. I think growing pains are to be expected and over time the price may come down somewhat. It also seems like 6D has put it's efforts into safety first and left creature comforts to fend for themselves. Again, with all of the thought processes behind the technology it's hard for me to fathom that no one thought about an extra visor, chipping paint, speaker cutouts, cheek pad sizes, etc. I gotta believe that at least at this stage of the game that someone made these decisions as opposed to being ignorant to the facts (I dunno, just my thoughts).
    At the end of the day what I know is, just like you, regardless of the price, the ATR-2 will don my noggin because I feel that is offers the best protection currently available in the marketplace today.
    Glad to see you up and moving around after the surgery, hope it went well and wishing you a speedy recovery.

    I am currently using the LS2 Subverter helmet. It moves a ton of air (35 ventilation ports) and they have what they call EPS that does the anti-rotational energy absorption kinda similar to the MIPS system. So far I am really liking the helmet and at $199 a lot of bang for the buck.

    I'm sold on the fox v3, after seeing ken roczens supercross crash (or was it monster cup?) and coming out without even a concussion I went out and bought a v3, within a few weeks I had a big crash on a set of rollers going into the face of another one and I didn't get a concussion. I mostly put it down to the MIPS technology, so my top 2 would be the v3 and the TLD se4.

    • @kings17court
      @kings17court 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. When 6d first came out, they had an advantage over some other helmet manufacturers. Now other helmet manufacturers have their own technology which provide similar protection, IMO. The MIPS offered by Fox is just one example.

    • @JeffreyJim09
      @JeffreyJim09 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No offense gentlemen but this is an incredibly stupid way to buy a helmet.
      First, you do not know if Ken had a concussion. What you meant to say is "he didn't get knocked out". A concussion can be something that dazes a rider. Seeing stars, even momentarily, or having a headache = concussion. Don't believe me? Go ask the NFL players who are having trouble years later...
      Second, MIPS is a joke compared to what 6D is doing. Though having a liner than can rotate will help spread energy in the event of a rotating crash, it is a knife in a gun fight compared to the way the elastomers in the 6D helmet work.
      6D is by far the most impressive helmet company in the world. Go learn how the technology works. Play with it. Look at it with your own two eyes. I won't wear anything else, and quiet literally my life depends on it.

    • @booie2t271
      @booie2t271 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No i meant to say he didn't get a concussion. If you saw his interview after the crash he mentioned multiple times he had no concussion from the crash.
      I agree with you in the aspect that 6d has amazing technology, however how can we now which helmet is better unless we have 2 identical crashes in both helmets? The point is we cant. Even with the snell, ece and dot tests we still don't know which one is better.
      Mips is a liner in the helmet that helps distribute the rotational forces (rotational forces are associated with being the primary cause of concussions). 6D's 'suspension' technology is also very good in terms of distributing impact forces.
      What i'm getting to is we can only make a decision on what we know about the technology, analyzing crashes and reviews of those who have worn the helmet and from personal use. I have had an amazing experience with the V3, which i have found to be better than my previous helmets and i have seen many high impact crashes with little to no head injury so i trust the V3's technology. 6D may be better, but who knows, with all the positive reviews, i may try it next

    I use the fox v3. I like the look of fox stuff and usually it's affordable as the next model comes up, or a less popular line will go on sale. I totally get people talking about how priceless a helmet is. That said most of us aren't made of money as long as it's rated to do the job I'll go with it. I know it always could be better, but the same could be said of a lot of safety things in life.

    • @JeffreyJim09
      @JeffreyJim09 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ...this is silly.
      1) A brain injury of any kind will cost tens to hundreds of thousands. I promise. I've been there.
      2) Just because a helmet meets a standard does not mean they are all the same. Not even close. Most every other helmet is designed to fail in order to absorb energy. This is the primary way it protects your head. The foam cracks instead of your noggin. The 6D is more akin to suspension. It doesn't fail persay (or it does, but that is the secondary means of energy absorption), but rather it absorbs the impact the same way your suspension absorbs a bump.
      They work entirely different. I'm not going to say how muc hbetter the 6D is, but it IS better, in that it will still protect your head in lower speed impacts.
      Put another way, using your logic, a Prius is just as safe as a full sized 2500HD just because they both are approved by the US DOT to comply to all road safety standards. Which would you rather be in an accident in?

    I've never bought a helmet that came with extra visor, nor have I seen any for sale that list extra visor included.
    Eyeports: Fox V2 pilot has tallest eyeport opening of ones I've tried with my goggles. LS2 MX456 goggles fit tight, Bell Moto9 goggles fit tight. Cheap scott goggles, 100% goggles, Pro-grip, Scott Tyrant. Tyrant with adjustable nose bridge fit the best, less pressure on nose. They should probably make the eyeport 1/4" taller on all helmets to fit goggles better but then maybe they are that way on purpose for a tight fit with less face exposed.

      @Rangerglx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure I totally agree. The leatt utilizes a smaller shell to minimize the rotational forces on impact. The 6D uses over sized shell(s) which has the opposite effect thus they have to put more padding in there. I did extensive research. I would proudly where a 6D and almost did. The 6D is probably marginally better but I didn't want to drop that kinda cash on a helmet. There are lots of decent helmets out there for less than the 6D. I like the Bell 's too.

    I use 100% RaceTech goggles - the Scotts did not fit with 6D helmet. But I can also say that the difference between AGV top model and 6D is insane. I haven't had any "sparks" flying when hitting a branch with 6D. Others like Leatt and Bell have similar technologies today and these helmets are better when compared to conventional design. Suomy uses two materials with different densities to achieve similar effect.

  • @JeffreyJim09
    @JeffreyJim09 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Kyle - Love your channel. I appreciate you giving the run down of the ATR1 vs ATR2. I've reviewed and worn the 6D helmet extensively as well. Few thoughts...
    1) I still struggle with a bad concussion a decade prior. For better or for worse, my understanding of brain injury surpasses the average adventure sports enthusiast. If you ever (God forbid) have to deal with such a thing, I can promise you'd be willing to pay $5000 for even a minimal increase in protection.
    2) I'm a suspension tester for a mountain bike magazine. How does that relate? Well, 6D claims their helmet is "suspension for your head". I agree neither you or me can objectively, independently, work out if their technology is better. That said, having played with cut-in-half samples, compared to the competition, it is extrodinary how it works. Its akin to looking at an old school right side up fork that isn't damped compared to the hottest KYB upside down tricked out damper. Neither you nor me needs to be an engineer to see which will absorb more energy.
    So yeah, I know its a lot of money, but its money that I'd encourage everyone to spend (and then some). In my opinion, this is the only helmet that'll actually help prevent not just TBI but *concussions*. Realize, most helmets don't do a whole lot for concussions. They only help when the foam actually fails (cracks absorbing energy). This helmet will absorb energy in small impacts, medium impacts and large impacts. Put another way, it isn't "tuned" for one event only but a range.
    Either way, thanks for posting. Happy to comment more if you have any question!

    I recently bought a helmet that fit well after you got it on, but would almost rip your ears off going on and off. So, what I did was take an old youth-sized basketball and deflate it, put it inside the helmet and then add enough air pressure to the ball to flex the sides a little bit. Then I just store it that way in a warm spot until my next ride. Fits great now! Of course, one would not want to overdo it on the air pressure.

    Before I watch this video I just have to say: there is no price you can put on your own life and quality of life. On Sunday I was doing some mountain woods riding here in California, and had a very violent crash on a logging/fire road. I banged my head on a rock pretty hard but came out unscathed. My helmet saved not only my life but possible permanent brain damage. My helmet is retired at this point.

    Fit is everything. If the helmet doesn't fit correctly it isn't worth anything. Which is why I didn't get a 6D. They are way too tight for me. When I got to a size that didn't cause hot spots in 5 mins wearing it, it was too l lose around the crown of the head. The other thing I noticed and wasn't a fan of with 6D is that the shell his huge compared with other helmets. I guess it has to be to fit all the "suspension" inside it.
    I went with a Bell moto 9 flex carbon. It's been a great helmet. I've taken a couple of pretty hard hits to the head in them and felt no ill effect. One I didn't even know I had hit my head until I watched the video from the fall.
    I'm sure if the 6D fits your head, it's probably an excellent helmet. Just isn't right for me.

  • @stickbeard
    @stickbeard 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 6D technology is valid. Talk to any Neurosurgeon (brain and spine surgeon) (I did) and they will tell you the suspension system in these helmets slow the head and brain down in a crash. This helmet protects you from not only high speed impacts (all helmets do that) but also from medium and low speed impacts. Most people spend good money on boots, why not your helmet? You can live with a messed up foot or leg, but not a messed up brain...
    One thing to note, the shell size is the same on their XXL and XL helmets, and for the L and M, and for S and XS. So if you wear a XL, Med, or S, the shell will be larger, they just add more padding to make up the size difference.

    I own Leatt, fox v3 and 6D. I am a believer in technologies that reduce concussion. I firmly believe that 6d does it best. I have combed through all kinds of research on the subject. The big problem is there isn't an independent testing facility. 6d does it best using a university. I do not have the same fitment issues. I have had others who have XXXL faces but XL heads. It is foolish to put them in an XXXL helmet. 6d makes cheek pads that are smaller. Try taking out the pads and then try the fit on your head. It it is still tight then go up if it isn't then call up 6d and get smaller cheek pads. If any of you are buy a new helmet please consider the newest rotational technologies. Mark my word, you will see a change in Hemet rules soon throughout all sponsored races requiring rotational technologies.

Safe to say all the stuff 6d says their technology does, is true. Not to mention you can have your helmet rebuilt for a hundred bucks. Well worth the money. I’m not sure how you can post a review and with a straight face, compare a 6d with annnyyyy 2-300 dollar helmet. You get what you pay for.

      @@enduro-parts-aus smallest and lightest are not 2 things which relates well with safety. There are smart tricks and materials but you cant beat physics. Thats why you wont see Shoei or Arai lighter than 1250 grams and not because they cant make them lighter.

    I've had a 6D carbon fibre for a couple years now. Only thing I don't like it for is on the sled. The vents work great for warm weather but will freeze your face off in the winter.

      Different standards for snowmobile shells?? It's like wearing a street helmet on dirt or vice versa??

    • @Trad-Am
      @Trad-Am 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris York Actually there's very little difference if any in off-road helmets and snowmobile helmets. For example Klim which started out as a snowmobile gear company. Their latest generation helmet the f5 if you look on their site is listed for off-road and snowmobile. Now I know the guys in the Midwest like full face street bike style helmets with heated visors. However they also wear really heavy snow gear to keep warm. Because they are mostly flat land trail riders and frozen lake racers sitting on the seat all day. While us mountain riders wear off-road helmets waterproof outer layers and breathable lightweight under layers. We also put the smallest seats on possible so as not to get in the way from hopping from one side to the other riding off camber slopes in the mountains.

    *Works great. I especially like the grinding / cutting mode and the off mode⛑️ **allabout.wiki/Downhill** Be sure to turn it back to welding mode before striking an arc, or else - flash burn. . .The only down side is the head band. Is is cheap, but I understand standard head bands will fit, so I will probably upgrade the head band.I had an old self darkening hood that worked, but I thought I was going blind because I could not see the puddle.*

    You don't need the 1K helmets for the average rider, Your body and limbs for the average rider are more important and will bet the most to get damaged. Swap promoted Shoei. Good Helmet but it's not necessary to spend that coin for a basic helmet.
