    The Kill the Wabbit cartoon seems to be an affectionate parody, and I even daresay that whoever came up with the idea and developed it must have been opera connoisseurs.

    The Tom and Jerry cartoon: the real Carmen would NOT have been scared by a mouse. Or anyone.

    Given the numerous people around the world, who got their first exposure to opera and classical music thanks to What's Opera Doc, Rabbit of Seville and Long-Haired Hare, along with many others, not to mention Fantasia. It seems almost criminal that these aren't mandatory viewing in every music class in every school. They are the perfect way to introduce children to the most beautiful music ever written. And for teenagers, while those are still great, maybe add in some Tina S performing Moonlight Sonata 3rd movement on electric guitar, as well as some Danish National Symphony Orchestra's pop culture concerts covering Clint Eastwood's man with no name trilogy, Star Wars and Tolkien, as the best way to help spark more interest in the arts in general and music in particular.

    My parents passionately hate classical music. I discovered it watching the cartoons and watching movies. I also discovered some of it while singing in school choruses and, now, church choir. Our director loves Mozart and we just did Lacrimosa at the Easter vigil.

    When, as grown-up children, we'd go to visit our parents, Dad would make pancakes on Sunday morning. Mom would let us know it was time to get up for pancakes by cranking "Ride of the Valkyries" loud enough to blast us up off our mattresses. So now I associate Wagner with pancakes. And my parents.

    This was cool Anna. I didn't know "What's Opera, Doc" had several operas in it. I didn't have a favorite from this bunch, but the aria from Lucia Di Lammormor reminded me of another Bugs Bunny cartoon.

    This was such a great idea for a video bc cartoons are absolutely what got me into opera and classical music altogether. This topic is an absolute wormhole...especially with Bugs Bunny, Animaniacs, and Tiny Toons alone. Looking forward to part two!

    Something struck me about the Castafiore: the Jewel Aria is the one and only aria we hear/see her singing. Hergé must have really hated it, but I also find it ironic that one of the most melodramatic roles in one of the darkest operas is used here as pure comedy.

      @@operaanna With Don Giovanni, it's one of my "Halloween" operas. Or my go-to operas for Halloween. I remember reading Hergé saying that for some reason he could not take opera seriously.

    The Castafiore is actually a fascinating character, in spite of the bad reputation she gave to her art. Although Tintin and Haddock cannot stand her singing, she is meant to be a diva of international renowned, so she must have done something right. But in universe, the two people who genuinely admire her are Colonel Sponz (he even seem to find her hot), who works for a dictatorship, and Professor Calculus, who is of course hard of hearing. The latter is actually downright gentlemanly with her in The Castafiore's Emerald (maybe the greatest Tintin story, by the way).

    • @operaanna
      @operaanna  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Such good insight! Like I said, i don't know the cartoon, but this clip was the only thing I saw. I found it so interesting that the creator based her off of Maria Callas after 1950, so makes sense that Castafiore is a renowned international singer herself

      @@operaanna Great video Anna, as usual. Maybe to give some context, the Tintin stories first came out as comic books drawn by Herge. Later (much later) they were made into cartoons. I must say that I have only read the books and in my imagination, she sang like a proper diva :). So, I'm giving Herge a pass here, and also agree with Ludovico's comment.

    • @ludovico6890
      @ludovico6890 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@operaanna Thanks. I'd recommend that you read the comics in which she is featured, if you find time. In spite of all her flaws, Bianca Castafiore has redeeming qualities.

    Lol your stepdad is correct, Tintin is one of the great Bandes Dessinées. It loses a bit in the film version but at least we get to hear La Castafiore sing. Too bad she is as talented as Assurancetourix, the bard from the Astérix BD.

    My personal favorite cartoon opera was Bugs Bunny Rabbit of Seville. Followed by Baton Bunny. Which I got to see live with the LA Phil at the Hollywood bowl. The cartoon starts out with a shot of the HWB and it was one of those surreal moments you never forget. Ive seen that cartoon dozens of times as a kid and now here I was watching it where it supposedly took place.
