During World War II the Japanese annexed Korea and took girls to serve as sex slaves. They also banned the usage of Hangul (the Korean language). Ever since Korea has never really had very good relations with Japan. In fact, right now I would bet Korea has more of an impact on today's pop culture than the Japanese do. Trust me I'm Korean.
ArchaicAscendancy No offense, but if you are Korean, then you are the least qualified person to say how much impact Korea has had on pop culture internationally. Of course Korean pop culture is popular in Korea. But really Japanese culture seems to be catching the most interest recently abroad (at least from what I experience here in the U.S. and what friends from the U.K. have said to me). I will say that Korean dramas seem to be picking up a lot of popularity lately, though. I keep hearing about them, friends watch them, and now Netflix seems to have a nice selection of them. Watch out, Japan ~
