      My dad literally described someone like that yesterday, I think he's a bit older than a boomer, he's late silent generation but he seems to find it very curious to have seen a well-dressed black gentleman in a bentley to the point that he thought he would mention it when we got lunch together, like it was some kind of hilarious event.

      I work a retail job where clients have to say our names so we can get recognition for sales, but we have to redirect clients away from describing employees by physical features... One time a client (who didn't realize I was standing next to the cashier) said that the "little Asian girl" helped her. I'm Mexican and apparently that's too confusing for our majority white clientele because it's not the first/last weird interaction!

    A bit of context, when boomers were growing up, many peoples' grandparents were first or second generation, so they had grandparents with accents or at least their friends did. People still talked about being Italian, Irish, German, Jewish, etc, it was common to label people with their very recent family history of origin.

      They only ever include the persons ethnicity when they are Jewish or aren't white. If the ethnicity isn't included when they are white then the default is to assume everyone is white. Not sure how you don't see that as being a problem but ok.

    Omg this is too accurate. It’s almost always unimportant to the story, but from my experience it’s also almost always well intentioned. I can’t tell you how many times a boomer I know mentioned someone’s race in a story and framed it as “isn’t that neat?”
    They don’t get how that can be kinda… dehumanizing because they treat it like a spectacle. But personally I’d take the well intentioned people who do stuff like this over the ones who also do stuff like this but on purpose to be hateful about it.
    It’s a “he’s a little confused but he’s got the spirit” type thing.
