I don't buy propane/charcoal or gas I now can quickly bbq using a few small pieces of wood that i cut myself and enjoy good bbq with an amazing smokey Flavor
It does get some ash but if you start your fire and keep it burning hot then its pretty good! I've also added a flat plate underneath the grill which helps alot

I would suggest adding a smaller side-tube above the fire to the bottom of smoker unit, with a damper....

Is the meat covered with ash? As i know, rocket stoves can do some turbulence...
