Early years Friends had a kind of cinematic quality in those moments where it knew the story it wanted to tell. Big shows have so many episodes that it can't all be plot, but someone on this site made a playlist that was the entire show chopped up into just the bits of their relationship that made any forward progress and it was nice seeing it all stapled together coherently.

No he didn't. You can see Ross's cards for a split second, and nothing he had or exchanged would have beaten a full house. He was raising with nothing to give Rachel a big win.

I don’t really care for this show, but David Schwimmer is a fine actor. He made clear to us, without words, that he was folding the better hand, by showing in his eyes that his feelings for Rachel were winning out over his desire to win. Since only the boys (and us) know about those feelings at this point, it’s still believable (to us) that the girls didn’t “get it”. Schwimmer really knew how to play what might be a very tricky moment.
Ross is also a horrible example of a guy. Man is a simp willing to be backwards and lacks a backbone. Bro has been divorced three times. He is a horrible man to be in a relationship with.
i recently watched it for me it felt like a time travel now when i see old rachel,joey,ross it feels weird in my head as i got connected so much with their young faces and performances. kinda feel sad too that they are no more like they used to in the show , future generations will also likely watch it cause its timeless and every scene works till today. i love this show.

Well no matter how much he loved her, the outline of the story was about their incompatibility. Joey on the other hand was like a breath of fresh air in Rachel's life and therefore some assume it to be a great relationship.
He loves her, he really loves her, how he loves her laughing face, he feels relieved and his heart yearns for her joy. This is the love that we cannot explain, then we offer it free of charge and without hesitation.
I didn't watch the first season when it first aired but when it was shown again leading up to season 2 it was this episode and this scene that got me hooked on it. Rachel was so endearing here.
This couple ended up falling out from grace in the eyes of a lot of people in the years after the show ended, to the point that people ask themselves why anyone would root for them in the first place. Not remembering that the "first place" was made out of moments like this one.
