- This week we drive an as new Peugeot 405 GTX Estate with only 1778 miles from new.
It was purchased in November 2021 from it's first owner, Peugeot Sochaux.
Built in January 1995 as a fully loaded press demonstrator, the car was shipped to the UK for press use. It was then returned to France for occasional display in the Peugeot museum.
After a number of years in storage the car was purchased by it's current owner.
Many thanks to Slattery's Garage for providing this car free of any charge and more vintage Peugeots are to come.

Took me long enough to give this video watch but here I am, prompted to so just after witnessing also a red 405 estate, not as fantastic as the one you reviewed but enough to bring me a smile, it was the 1st time I see one in ages, they do get rarer here in France.

I remember growing up in the 1990s, 405's were everywhere on UK roads, a popular choice for a family car and the old XUD diesels were bullet proof which made them a taxi drivers favourite, they could clock up pretty high mileage with decent reliability. That must be the best remaining 405 example in europe. I love the old Peugeots, 106, 205, 309, 306, 405 but adore the 306.
I started in 1967 with a P403B one of the strongest and most reliable Pewgots ever built in 1956 Since then I have owned 10 more and one 505STI did over 513,000 km and is still going strong ,now 40 years old. original engine gearbox and differential _ stupendous cruising car La Belle Peugeot 505 STI
P306XT was a brilliant, comfortable and very reliable car which my wife drove for 16 years

Yes John, all the estates were built in France. I know an old chap that used to work in the UK factory. the reason was that the saloons and estates had to be sprayed with the boot lid open and the estates were thus too tall to fit in the spray booth and PSA would not go to the expense of altering it (and the production line) .
That is a truly stunning example.
I've always really liked the styling of the 405 in both saloon and estate. Back then estate cars typically were not considered to be stylish but Peugeot nailed it. Stylish sophistication that looked modern in period and has aged extremely well. Very few would have been as nicely specified as this one sadly.
This must have been a late one as I don't think it was long after this that we saw the 406.
Yep. Hugely capable car and I really believe Peugeot were the Audi of the 80s and early 90s. Styling was right up there with the best 👌 And you're right, this one was hugely rare in terms of its spec. It was finally replaced by the 406 estate in 1997

Superb cars i really liked the looks of the 405.
I drove a very early launch car and then had two as company cars a phase one 1.9GR non injection in ‘92 and then a facelift 1.9TD GLX.. both never missed a beat. I remember both fondly to the extent that I’d have one in a heartbeat. There are so very few left, especially the phase one cars.
The XUD diesels were rock solid workhorses. Would love one myself now, they're still a refined car.

The engine is actually a 2.0 with the same amount of power as the 1.9 but better environmental specs.
I /suppose/ that this press-demonstrator GTX was made to test the ice for the introduction of the 405 break Executive, later on in 1995. That version was also fully loaded, with some more options fitted like a sunvisor with lighted mirror and optionally wood trim on the door-panels and a 6CD player + autoreverse cassette.

My family's first car was a 1992 405 glx
It was white, had a manual gearbox and a 1.6l carburetor engine. I loved thar car.

John, I believe that they built all of the estates in France. They were conversely better assembled than the Ryton built saloons.

I have a 405 GLXD needs a small bit of fixing up but still runs, waiting for classic tax to get it back on the road nearly 300,000 on the clock, as far as I know it was made in france but is a RHD as it was one of the last ones made, must take it for a spin down to Slatterys when it's ready.

My father has had 405 1.9 petrol GR and 405 GRD great car, now I have 205 XS.
