I still cant handle how the players used the "Dan Grope Scenario" in their game-play. They really sickened me with the way they gas lighted Janet that season.

That was so disappointing and I feel that Janet was unfairly affected because she tried to do the right thing and help. The show had video about what was happening and should not have allowed it to progress as far as it did.
I feel like this isn’t brought up enough as one of the cringiest/creepiest things a contestant as done. Like you’re an adult man, surely you can find people attractive and just decide to not cheat on your wife without having to vote Mikayla off. So weird
Not to mention the fact that even if he had decided to be "loyal to his wife" (what a great guy!!), what on earth made him think Mikayla would have had anything to do with him? He was so deluded.
Janet is one of the most respectable Survivors ever for how she handled Dan’s BS. An absolute gem of a human being. Similarly, the way the Game Changers players stood up for Zeke against Varner. Much respect to them for that. Also so glad to see Alicia included in the Colton segment. She didn’t do as much as Colton, so she doesn’t get mentioned as much when people talk about the bad behavior on that season. The way they treated Christina was ridiculous.
Imo I think Alicia could be considered worse. Colton’s hate doesn’t necessarily affect anyone in his life (plus he has seemingly changed a lot) but Alicia is a special ed teacher and basically mocked her own students on the show. At least colton’s victims had the power of being able to fight back/be portrayed positively but Alicia was bullying people not even on the show. Feel free to disagree with me but I just find Alicia’s behavior a lot more appalling. Not necessarily because it’s “worse” than Colton’s but because Colton’s hate came more from a lack of exposure to people different from him, whereas Alicia was making fun of people she was supposed to care about.

Watching the way Kellee was treated again really makes my skin crawl. To this day I cannot believe that the women were all being harassed like that, had the opportunity to cut that cancer out of the tribe that was responsible, yet went ahead and voted Kellee out before going back to jackass and downplaying the very real reasons why the producers talked to them all. Just disgusting.
I should never have been on the players, who are going to take every advantage to win. Everyone wanted Dan at the end because he was a goat. Even Kellee didn’t want him kicked out at first and wanted to target Molly. That said, Tommy, IMO, is a bottom tier winner because he sided with Dan and always will be. it should have been on production to kick him out, or at least pull her aside and strongly suggest she should play one of her idols so it doesn’t look like he is being kicked out but voted out.

I always found it weird how Alicia and Christina worked together postmerge because of how horribly Alicia treated Christina at the swap but they had apparently mended fences, though that makes those comments even worse.
She did apologize during the reunion, but yeah, I do acknowledge that doesn't necessarily exempt someone from the things they said. She did seem sincere though.

As a gay, I kind of loved Shannon just for how ridiculous he was. I am from the south so i’m used to that sort of guy, and it’s fun to actively play into the game with the knowledge he can’t speak his mind without being outed as a dumbass. If I was sash, I’d be like “yeah, man, I am gay, I bang the hottest dudes you’ve ever seen” cuz what could Shannon even say to that without exposing himself as a homophobe lol
To me Shannon seems like a cartoon chatacter because I've been lucky enough to not encounter someone like him in my life. That and the fact that he was out so fast makes him into a big meme to me and my survivor friends.
So I wonder this sometimes. Sometimes when a friend tells me something cool or shows me something they like or whatever I say “that’s so gay…” but then clarify “gay is a good thing”. For context, I’ve never had anything against gay people in my life and completely denounce homophobia. I’m even bi myself but I can find humour in it all. Anyway, if I said that’s so gay as in that’s so cool, is that offensive?
The thing that makes the Colton/Alicia/Christina situation worse is the fact that Christina gets literally no content in Survivor: One World that isn’t related to people being horrible to her. As soon as Colton’s gone she’s basically removed from the show and is only mentioned when people shit talk her.
And after all that Christina still comforted Colton when he was in pain, showing how great of a human being she is despite being the target of such horrible people.

I wish Christina got the opportunity to play again, I feel like she had a decent head for the game but was just beaten down by her castmates to a point where she can’t even stand up for herself in the end. I don’t think she’ll ever be the best Survivor player in the world but I think she deserves a fair shot at the million.
Jaison's emasculating of Ben during his boot episode was one of THE best things I've seen anyone do. Just flat out stop the vote and strongarm it to stand up to a very inflammatory bully. No one can tell me he was doing too much or being too militant or triggered. He handled it with a perfect mix of logic and outrage
Jaison was so articulate in that moment. A shame he never got to play again. He and Jamal were so eloquent in their conversations about race, implicit bias, and the connotation of words and labels.

I was genuinely so happy he stood up and said something, there have been multiple questionable moments regarding race in other seasons and most if not all of them had been brushed off until Jaison finally stood up on camera.
Can you just imagine being Kellee on the jury, listening to Dan giving his side and downplay everything while the whole tribe gaslights the one person that stood up for you, knowing you can’t do or say anything from your side?
I did hear that the producers gave Kellee the opportunity to speak about the issue on the tribal after she was voted out but she declined, not wanting to ruin the integrity of the game.
When Varner outing Zeke my mind was blown. Not just because you would think Varner would know better, but because the whole tribe was immediately furious. I couldn’t have been more proud of the survivor community.
The Dan situation really sickens me, especially bc other women were using other people being uncomfortable as a way to advance their game. It still saddens me that the people that spoke out got so much backlash in the game
It still shocks me how much Dan got away with what he did. The producers should have stepped in immediately and ejected him. I feel for Kellee and Janet. The season was going so well too, if Dan did not ruin it
To add on to Brandon’s segment, in South Pacific he hated and relentlessly targeted Michaela pretty much solely for the reason that he was attracted to her, and he blamed her for making him have desires to be unfaithful to his wife. She literally just existed and he was furious at her for being attracted to her
And then, after he verbally attacked her, he had a self-pitying confessional in which he basically cried about not wanting to be like his Uncle Russell, and he clearly expected people to feel sorry for _him_ instead of _her_ in that moment. And even worse, the _editors_ clearly wanted us to feel sorry for him, when I only felt sorry for Mikayla.
I think it's important to note that when Jeff was talking to Rob Cesternino and fans came away from it thinking he said that there will never be villains on Survivor again and it was just going to be a lovefest... he never said that. What he was saying that there will never be people on the show again who would make this list. No more Brandons. No more Wills. No more Coltons. Etc. And I'm thankful for that.
Yeah because while it's only been two episodes of 46, it seems that Kenzie and Tiffany are going to get a more "villainous" edit and I also can see Venus getting one (but more in a Parvati sense) where she's just a cold calculated strategist. I also think that Tevin being so dismissive of Venus and saying how he controls his tribe is also being shown to us in that way. I'm not saying these people are villains because it's way too early to say that, but the edit was leaning that way last episode.
yea, theres a big difference in casting villains on the level of a Megamind or a Loki, and casting Jeffery Dahmer. Can still have villains, but casting pure assholes to force the issue is not great.
That's what I was thinking too. Sometimes when casting around seasons 10-39 wanted "memorable villains" and "big personalities," they got people who were just terrible. The new era has some people who are ruthlessly strategic, but the new casting process seems to be getting rid of the toxic before they start.
So as much as I LOATHE Varner for what he did to Zeke, I can’t skip over the fact that I love how the rest of the castaways there absolutely REAMED him to shreds. Like I don’t really care for Sarah or Debbie, but their participation in absolutely destroying Varner gives them some serious points in my book.

So Varner is 100% in the wrong, but I don't think the producers get enough flak for the fact they showed Varner outing Zeke. If you just let the tribe vote, you can edit around the confrontation and it's still Zeke call on when he wants to be out to the public (See the accusations of Kenny calling Charlie slurs in Gabon). It comes across to me like they wanted that big moment in Millennials vs. Gen X and just baited Varner into outing him to force Zeke's hand.
@@johndebono1870 I could be wrong but I vaguely recall reading somewhere of Zeke saying in a post game interview that the producers did in fact ask him what they should do with those scenes and he decided to allow it to remain in the show. One of the rare occasions when a contestant had a say in their edit.

I just read Colton’s AMA Reddit and wow, he really matured in the 8 years between his seasons and that AMA. He’s forthcoming in explaining why he was the way he was, but it never comes off as an excuse. My favorite part is when someone asked him if he ever apologized to Bill and Colton replied he did and learned a ton about forgiveness and empathy from him.
Didn’t his fiancé pass away? I’m sure that really changed his life and perspective on the world. I hope he’s grown and he has found peace. Rest in peace Caleb 🤍

Let it go. The "come on in" stuff doesn't really matter if it has "guys" or not at the end. Jeff did a mistake in trying to make this a "grand TV moment" and it ended up being very cheesy but he admitted that he shouldn't have made this into a TV moment and instead just change it. Ricard was just the one to speak up but it was something that the whole Ua tribe was thinking with him and at the end of the day he just wanted to make things a bit more inclusive for those whose this mattered (and there were some).
It was so heartbreaking to watch Kellee get voted out, Jamal get screwed by the fake advantage, and Janet being driven to tears and ready to quit after they tried to do the right thing in the Dan situation. Tommy was a villainous winner. He was keeping Dan in the game as a goat despite the fact that he didn’t respect boundaries (to put his disgusting actions mildly), he sabotaged Janet’s idol play, then sabotaged Lauren’s fire making. Can’t blame him for not wanting to sit next to Janet or Lauren at the end, but his gameplay was still villainous. Lil got grief for being a scout leader who lied in a game that requires lying. How about Tommy- a fourth grade teacher/ whose female students watched him keep a predator in the game?
Janet and Kellee have both said Tommy had their backs and a lot of the cast speculate that he was buried in the edit because if he won after speaking out against production the entire season would have been clouded. They voted for him to win for a reason.
Tommy actually didn't approve of Dan's actions in the game, but because production didn't want to air anything that made them look bad/wanted to cover their asses the whole time after constantly dropping the ball on the sexual harassment issues that happened multiple times over 39 seasons, and Tommy had the balls to call them out on their mishandling of everything, none of that stuff made the edit, and instead he got falsely edited to look like a sympathizer
Look it was messed up but as somehow who is hella queer that Sash thinks saying he’s “one of the most eligible bachelors in New York” is somehow supposed to help his case is kinda funny
For sure, the transgression of Shannon is infinitely worse but Sash getting so defensive about being called gay and essentially refuting it by saying he “slays mad pussy” is also not a great look. It shows that he perceived being called gay to be negative and something he needed to refute. But I give him grace, it was a different cultural time and he was being verbally assaulted for no reason so it’s not that strange that he would respond poorly.

A harsh reality is that the field of special education is full of people like Alicia. Maybe not as overt, but many don't respect their students as people and just train them like dogs to obey. She thought that was an okay thing to say, probably because she and her coworkers would joke about it in the teacher's lounge. It's such a huge but hidden problem

One of the worst parts about Dan/Kellee on Survivor is Kellee got retaliated against for blowing the whistle on Dan. If that happened in any company, there’d be a lawsuit. (She was such a fun player to watch-she deserved better.)

The thing that disgusts me the most about the dan situation is that this kind of thing does happen in real life all the time. Women talk all the time about needing to hold men accountable but there are a significant portion of women who stand by and let things happen if it benefits them. Bill Burr made a great joke about it with how the WNBA fails where Real Housewives succeeds. "Women would rather tear each other down than achieve a common goal" that shit is so true at the most ruthless level. We always say survivor is a reflection of society and that was the most real vile shit. Ive never been able to watch that season again despite my love for Janet, Jamal and Kellie. There was a fun cast and then Dan fucked it up and the women allied with him put the game before life because everyone wanted him around for an easier shot at winning. The show fucked up and the cast did too. There's no way he shouldve been allowed to stay that long.
It was disgusting how so many of the girls complained about Dan but when Kellee was brave enough to come forward they all gaslighted her. Janet was protective & took responsibility to get the accusations addressed. They all turned on her. So gross

Colton and Alicia were horrible people in that season. I felt really bad for Christina in that Season. I thought she deserved a 2nd chance if she wanted it.
Yes and I recently found out that Survivor does not allow ADHD medication and Christina was diagnosed as ADHD. This makes the situation even worse. Feel terrible for christina.

Always enjoy sharing with Survivor fans who may not be super into sports that Scot's constant claims of being a "champion" refer to a season where he played in about one-fourth of the regular season's games. In those, he played slightly less than 8 minutes per (48-minute) game, averaging under 2 points. He didn't see the court at any point during the playoffs.
You would know more than me, but having watched Brandon - he clearly had mental issues. That doesn’t excuse his behavior - but I would steer him toward therapy and treatment than others on this list. And Jeff sucks - having lived in Greensboro, where he was, he continued his toxic behavior (and he does on Twitter).
I get where you're coming from and I agree, but I kind of also believe pretty much everyone on this list should go to therapy. Sadly that is also what makes them "interesting" for this show
Varner’s behavior on social media is awful, he has no grasp of what a bigot he is and he highlights the worst parts of transphobia. I use him as a prime example of how transphobia rots people’s brains.
Nothing in survivor has ever made me as frustrated as when they took out Kellee and then removed Dan from play. She deserves way better for standing up for herself and it was a shame to see those women and men go against someone instead of standing up for them in solidarity
Since I haven’t seen anyone else mention it: Alicia being a special ed teacher and making the comments she did at 15:44 is vile. As an autistic person, it really bothers me that so many special ed teachers who are supposed to help us and be there for us during our most vulnerable years don’t actually see us as equals. I hope she got fired after her season because she should not be working with disabled people (especially not disabled children).
The Dan situation is sad and frustrating. I like to think that a lot of kids growing up saw and accepted Jamal’s explanation debunking the false notion of “if this was a problem then I would’ve heard about it.” Same with Kellee and Janet setting boundaries with the game and real life
We should have a season of players who were abused or mistreated in some way by toxic players their first time around. It could have people like Janet, Kellee, Christina, Alecia, Bill, and so many more. There were so many players who were tortured or screwed in their first game and were going no chance to move forward because extremely toxic people had the power. They deserve a second chance with other players who are actually empathetic, decent human beings
The three worst episodes of the show are in a league of their own, and it's not even close: 1. The Dan Spilo merge incident. 2. Sue Hawk's quit in All-Stars 3. Varner and Zeke It's easy to be a boring episode. It takes a special kind of episode to make me disgusted to be a fan. (At least Varner's ejection was affirming in the positivity that followed.)
#3 is a little less awful because everyone rightfully defended Zeke and stood up against Varner, while in the other two situations there was no silver linning.
Also, Jaison, LOVE that man. Can he please play again if he wants to? That would be nice. Same goes for Janet, because I thought she was very stand-up and dealt with the Pervy Dan situation very well, tying to defend the younger women, from what I could tell.
Since you talked about colten growing as a person you should have also talked about Varner doubling down and being even worse as a person now, going from "accidently" outing a trans person to trying to attack trans children.
Brandon is rightly called out, but what about Philip bullying him and then talking about his family? Philip strikes me as the kind of person who is very difficult to be around.

Not that Rocky's behaviour was cool, but it was brought up by Anthony that they are friends now and the show did him dirty by leaving out the fact he was going through nicotine withdrawal. Why Rocky thought that was a good idea right after Shane Powers I have no clue, but it does explain a lot.
Janet, Kellee and Jamal were the only saving graces of season 39. I almost didn’t come back to watching survivor after that because of how horribly badly that was handled.
I'd argue Molly, Vince, Chelsea, Tom, Jack, Karishma and Noura were also saving graces of 39 because they were either great, likeable players taken out too soon (Molly/Vince/Chelsea/Tom/Jack) or were the few that tried to vote Dan out at 13 in support of Kellee (Karishma and Noura).
The episode where Kellee and Jamal were kicked and Janet was gaslighted and driven to tears was the first time I had to reconsider my unwavering loyalty to the show. It was horrible, dark and nasty. They seem to have done better tho.
Where seasons like South Pacific and One World nearly drove me to quit watching Survivor with their toxic crap, TH-camrs like you and Luke of Idoled Out kept me watching Survivor, and I'm glad I didn't give up on the show. So thank you.
I will never forgive nearly everyone in IOI for gaslighting Janet...the fact that production only pulled the plug when it happened to a crew member is truly disgusting
I remember watching Kaoh Rong as it was airing. I was maybe 13 or 14 and I remember my dad and I always arguing about Alecia. I liked her a lot. I thought that despite being ostracized immediately by her tribe, she kept up great spirits and still tried to work with her teammates and talk things out. Everyone else on the tribe however, especially Scott and Jason just always blamed her for every little thing that went wrong. My dad felt the same way as Scott and Jason and just out right hated her and kept calling her a “dumb blonde” Everyone on that tribe was just used to being the best physically wherever they were from so when they didn’t win physical challenges, they just immediately put the blame on her. She was the only one who would voice any sort of strategy because not all challenges can be won by strength alone, but she would just get ignored
Ted never gets talked about. It's wild. Like even if you believe he was unintentional of any wrong doing, the way he treated Ghandia after was awful. Jean Robert was also really toxic. If he did what he did today, he'd face the same backlash Dan did. Maybe even worse. Rocky bullying Anthony in Fiji was awful. Worse was Probst joining him!
Rocky and Anthony actually have mended fences now and are cool with each other, and according to Anthony, a large part of why Rocky was the way he was is because he pulled a Shane Powers and went through nicotine withdrawal his entire time on the show
I still remember the way I felt watching the Varner moment the first time. My heart dropped it was horrible. Zeke handled it better than most of the human population could ever have. Hopefully one day peoples differences won’t even cross others minds. ❤
I think the worst part about the Varner situation is that in the months he had to reflect after the season he instead decided to write a book and then he took said book to the reunion to promote, essentially monetizing off of outing Zeke. So disgusting.
And now Brandon Hantz, Dan, Colton, and probably others from this video are on the Survivor Blacklist, never to compete again. I'd like to see a video on that.
To this day I am actually still fairly impressed that Brandon didnt (somewhat justifiably) throw a punch and Phillip because he was really asking for it to a point where it seemed he was hoping that production/his tribe would help him.
Varner outing Zeke the way he did genuinely makes me uncomfortable. I'm glad that not only did he had the of the other players there to call Varner out for what he did but that he also stayed very calm in situation where I wouldn't blame him for being upset.
Watching these clips has reaffirmed my belief that the camera people and producers should step in at will when the bullying gets too much. Yes it is a game of "surviving" amongst all the players, but there is no need to degrade the other players in the process.
Don't forget how after the episode aired, Will actually doubled down on his statements and claimed the reason why people sided with Shirin was cause she was white (even though she's not actually white either.)
The audacity he had to then sit there and cry over him maliciously outing Zeke, hahahahaha and on top of that, monetizing the entire situation and making it about his shame and not the shame he brought to the whole episode and contestants.
So disgusting that the producers only did something about Dan once he started that stuff with a crew member. How they handled that entire situation was definitely a low point in the franchise

Based off of what Probst said, I think the issue for the producers was, technically Dan didn't break any laws and since they didn't have anything written in their rule book about it, they were potentially liable for a lawsuit from him if they removed him. Reminder that this show allowed far worse to happen numerous times before this.

@@brittanyscott9994 The Sue/Hatch incident was ugly moment. Now, most the other contestants have stated they dont think Rich had any malice intent and no one saw anything. Hatch has talked about his side. He claims he made no contact with her and that footage backed him up. He did also make a good point about how odd it was that she went out of her way to be close to him when he was naked (not victim blaming, but logically, it made no sense). Her whole tribe was yelling at her to just score the point. Now, Hatch shouldn't have made his joke as it was very inappropriate (as was being naked for the challenge!). What's crazy is despite production paying a settlement to Sue for the incident, they didn't learn their lesson. They allowed Dave in China to compete naked in a physical contact challenge! Missy and Elizabeth pulled off one of the dirtiest moves ever for sure. I get why people are pissed at them. That said, they were playing a game for a million dollars. They had no idea how bad the situation was or if Kellee was just playing it up to benefit her own game (Unless Im mistaken, didnt Kelee pitch getting rid of Dan?). I think people were too harsh towards them. It's on production to take a player out if it gets that bad. It's on the players to play the game. Honestly, Aaron pissed me off the most. Dude called Janet and Kelee liars because he "would have known about it if it was going on" 🙄. I think Jean-Robert in China never gets talked about enough. Dude constantly made sexual remarks in front of everyone about Courtney and Amanda. He would also follow the girls around the shelter so he could cuddle with them at night. Took James to put a stop to it. Everyone got mad at Courtney for speaking up for herself and trying to get him out. Oh and then there's the Ted/Ghandia situation...
The Rocky/Lisi/Edgardo/Mookie alliance in Fiji was pretty rough. Especially at final tribal, and ESPECIALLY Lisi. It was probably the most uncomfortable I've ever been watching the show, and is at least part of the reason I didn't actively watch much longer afterward.
Edgardo honestly was the only likable member of that alliance...Alex on the other hand, he was about as bad as Lisi was in those FTC questions, especially the not letting Cassandra defend herself when he incorrectly accused her of flipping on Stacy the round that Yau-Man played his idol
Dan’s not really a bad person at all. He’s just kind of oblivious to how his words can be misconstrued. Even Shirin claimed that there were ten other people in her season that she hated more than him.

I'm surprised that creepy Ted wasn't listed. I'm always so disappointed when the women who raise the issues with these men get voted out before the men committing the acts.
The worst thing I have ever seen on the show was Dan the groper, and how some of the women used that to get further in the game. There are things that no one should have to deal with, in or outside of a game. Dan should have been removed before Kellee left.

More people spoke out on season 39, but it just wasn't shown...in Tommy's case, it was because he was also critical of production for their handling of the situation
I wish Jean Robert from China was removed from the game or at least given some sort of warning by production since he also was doing things similar to what Dan was doing. It probably had to do with that season being much earlier and the way harassment was handled back then, but it bothers me that those incidents weren't taken seriously
varner was my moms cheerleading coach in college. he was mean then too! he would make fun of the girls for their looks and was rude. he hit her up years later promoting his appearance on survivor 😭😭it’s strange that he would do something so rude like that considering he’s openly gay …

Janet is one of the most respectable Survivors ever for how she handled Dan’s BS. An absolute gem of a human being. Similarly, the way the Game Changers players stood up for Zeke against Varner. Much respect to them for that.
Also so glad to see Alicia included in the Colton segment. She didn’t do as much as Colton, so she doesn’t get mentioned as much when people talk about the bad behavior on that season. The way they treated Christina was ridiculous.
Imo I think Alicia could be considered worse. Colton’s hate doesn’t necessarily affect anyone in his life (plus he has seemingly changed a lot) but Alicia is a special ed teacher and basically mocked her own students on the show. At least colton’s victims had the power of being able to fight back/be portrayed positively but Alicia was bullying people not even on the show. Feel free to disagree with me but I just find Alicia’s behavior a lot more appalling. Not necessarily because it’s “worse” than Colton’s but because Colton’s hate came more from a lack of exposure to people different from him, whereas Alicia was making fun of people she was supposed to care about.

I should never have been on the players, who are going to take every advantage to win. Everyone wanted Dan at the end because he was a goat. Even Kellee didn’t want him kicked out at first and wanted to target Molly. That said, Tommy, IMO, is a bottom tier winner because he sided with Dan and always will be.
it should have been on production to kick him out, or at least pull her aside and strongly suggest she should play one of her idols so it doesn’t look like he is being kicked out but voted out.

As a gay, I kind of loved Shannon just for how ridiculous he was. To me Shannon seems like a cartoon chatacter because I've been lucky enough to not encounter someone like him in my life. That and the fact that he was out so fast makes him into a big meme to me and my survivor friends.
So I wonder this sometimes. Sometimes when a friend tells me something cool or shows me something they like or whatever I say “that’s so gay…” but then clarify “gay is a good thing”. The thing that makes the Colton/Alicia/Christina situation worse is the fact that Christina gets literally no content in Survivor: One World that isn’t related to people being horrible to her. As soon as Colton’s gone she’s basically removed from the show and is only mentioned when people shit talk her.
And after all that Christina still comforted Colton when he was in pain, showing how great of a human being she is despite being the target of such horrible people.

I wish Christina got the opportunity to play again, I feel like she had a decent head for the game but was just beaten down by her castmates to a point where she can’t even stand up for herself in the end. Jaison's emasculating of Ben during his boot episode was one of THE best things I've seen anyone do. Just flat out stop the vote and strongarm it to stand up to a very inflammatory bully. I was genuinely so happy he stood up and said something, there have been multiple questionable moments regarding race in other seasons and most if not all of them had been brushed off until Jaison finally stood up on camera.
Can you just imagine being Kellee on the jury, listening to Dan giving his side and downplay everything while the whole tribe gaslights the one person that stood up for you, knowing you can’t do or say anything from your side?

To add on to Brandon’s segment, in South Pacific he hated and relentlessly targeted Michaela pretty much solely for the reason that he was attracted to her, and he blamed her for making him have desires to be unfaithful to his wife. She literally just existed and he was furious at her for being attracted to her
And then, after he verbally attacked her, he had a self-pitying confessional in which he basically cried about not wanting to be like his Uncle Russell, and he clearly expected people to feel sorry for _him_ instead of _her_ in that moment. And even worse, the _editors_ clearly wanted us to feel sorry for him, when I only felt sorry for Mikayla.
I think it's important to note that when Jeff was talking to Rob Cesternino and fans came away from it thinking he said that there will never be villains on Survivor again and it was just going to be a lovefest... he never said that. What he was saying that there will never be people on the show again who would make this list. No more Brandons. No more Wills. No more Coltons. Etc. And I'm thankful for that.
Yeah because while it's only been two episodes of 46, it seems that Kenzie and Tiffany are going to get a more "villainous" edit and I also can see Venus getting one (but more in a Parvati sense) where she's just a cold calculated strategist. I also think that Tevin being so dismissive of Venus and saying how he controls his tribe is also being shown to us in that way. I'm not saying these people are villains because it's way too early to say that, but the edit was leaning that way last episode.
yea, theres a big difference in casting villains on the level of a Megamind or a Loki, and casting Jeffery Dahmer. Can still have villains, but casting pure assholes to force the issue is not great.
That's what I was thinking too. Sometimes when casting around seasons 10-39 wanted "memorable villains" and "big personalities," they got people who were just terrible. The new era has some people who are ruthlessly strategic, but the new casting process seems to be getting rid of the toxic before they start.

If you just let the tribe vote, you can edit around the confrontation and it's still Zeke call on when he wants to be out to the public (See the accusations of Kenny calling Charlie slurs in Gabon).
It comes across to me like they wanted that big moment in Millennials vs. Gen X and just baited Varner into outing him to force Zeke's hand.
@@johndebono1870 I could be wrong but I vaguely recall reading somewhere of Zeke saying in a post game interview that the producers did in fact ask him what they should do with those scenes and he decided to allow it to remain in the show. One of the rare occasions when a contestant had a say in their edit.

I just read Colton’s AMA Reddit and wow, he really matured in the 8 years between his seasons and that AMA. He’s forthcoming in explaining why he was the way he was, but it never comes off as an excuse. My favorite part is when someone asked him if he ever apologized to Bill and Colton replied he did and learned a ton about forgiveness and empathy from him.

The "come on in" stuff doesn't really matter if it has "guys" or not at the end. Jeff did a mistake in trying to make this a "grand TV moment" and it ended up being very cheesy but he admitted that he shouldn't have made this into a TV moment and instead just change it. Ricard was just the one to speak up but it was something that the whole Ua tribe was thinking with him and at the end of the day he just wanted to make things a bit more inclusive for those whose this mattered (and there were some).
It was so heartbreaking to watch Kellee get voted out, Jamal get screwed by the fake advantage, and Janet being driven to tears and ready to quit after they tried to do the right thing in the Dan situation.
Tommy was a villainous winner. He was keeping Dan in the game as a goat despite the fact that he didn’t respect boundaries (to put his disgusting actions mildly), he sabotaged Janet’s idol play, then sabotaged Lauren’s fire making. Can’t blame him for not wanting to sit next to Janet or Lauren at the end, but his gameplay was still villainous.
Lil got grief for being a scout leader who lied in a game that requires lying. How about Tommy- a fourth grade teacher/ whose female students watched him keep a predator in the game?

Janet and Kellee have both said Tommy had their backs and a lot of the cast speculate that he was buried in the edit because if he won after speaking out against production the entire season would have been clouded.

Tommy actually didn't approve of Dan's actions in the game, but because production didn't want to air anything that made them look bad/wanted to cover their asses the whole time after constantly dropping the ball on the sexual harassment issues that happened multiple times over 39 seasons, and Tommy had the balls to call them out on their mishandling of everything, none of that stuff made the edit, and instead he got falsely edited to look like a sympathizer

For sure, the transgression of Shannon is infinitely worse but Sash getting so defensive about being called gay and essentially refuting it by saying he “slays mad pussy” is also not a great look. It shows that he perceived being called gay to be negative and something he needed to refute. But I give him grace, it was a different cultural time and he was being verbally assaulted for no reason so it’s not that strange that he would respond poorly.

A harsh reality is that the field of special education is full of people like Alicia. Maybe not as overt, but many don't respect their students as people and just train them like dogs to obey. She thought that was an okay thing to say, probably because she and her coworkers would joke about it in the teacher's lounge. It's such a huge but hidden problem

One of the worst parts about Dan/Kellee on Survivor is Kellee got retaliated against for blowing the whistle on Dan. If that happened in any company, there’d be a lawsuit. (She was such a fun player to watch-she deserved better.)
Kellee deserves a second chance but in terms of gameplay she wasn’t very good

The thing that disgusts me the most about the dan situation is that this kind of thing does happen in real life all the time. Women talk all the time about needing to hold men accountable but there are a significant portion of women who stand by and let things happen if it benefits them. Bill Burr made a great joke about it with how the WNBA fails where Real Housewives succeeds. "Women would rather tear each other down than achieve a common goal" that shit is so true at the most ruthless level. We always say survivor is a reflection of society and that was the most real vile shit. Ive never been able to watch that season again despite my love for Janet, Jamal and Kellie. There was a fun cast and then Dan fucked it up and the women allied with him put the game before life because everyone wanted him around for an easier shot at winning. The show fucked up and the cast did too. There's no way he shouldve been allowed to stay that long.

Colton and Alicia were horrible people in that season. I felt really bad for Christina in that Season. I thought she deserved a 2nd chance if she wanted it.
Yes and I recently found out that Survivor does not allow ADHD medication and Christina was diagnosed as ADHD. This makes the situation even worse. Feel terrible for christina.

Always enjoy sharing with Survivor fans who may not be super into sports that Scot's constant claims of being a "champion" refer to a season where he played in about one-fourth of the regular season's games. In those, he played slightly less than 8 minutes per (48-minute) game, averaging under 2 points. He didn't see the court at any point during the playoffs.

You would know more than me, but having watched Brandon - he clearly had mental issues. That doesn’t excuse his behavior - but I would steer him toward therapy and treatment than others on this list. And Jeff sucks - having lived in Greensboro, where he was, he continued his toxic behavior (and he does on Twitter).
Yeah Brandon did have mental issues on both of his seasons. I did not like what Jeff did to Zeke at the TC on "Survivor: Game Changers."

Varner’s behavior on social media is awful, he has no grasp of what a bigot he is and he highlights the worst parts of transphobia. I use him as a prime example of how transphobia rots people’s brains.
Nothing in survivor has ever made me as frustrated as when they took out Kellee and then removed Dan from play. She deserves way better for standing up for herself and it was a shame to see those women and men go against someone instead of standing up for them in solidarity
Since I haven’t seen anyone else mention it: Alicia being a special ed teacher and making the comments she did at 15:44 is vile. As an autistic person, it really bothers me that so many special ed teachers who are supposed to help us and be there for us during our most vulnerable years don’t actually see us as equals. I hope she got fired after her season because she should not be working with disabled people (especially not disabled children).
The Dan situation is sad and frustrating. I like to think that a lot of kids growing up saw and accepted Jamal’s explanation debunking the false notion of “if this was a problem then I would’ve heard about it.” Same with Kellee and Janet setting boundaries with the game and real life
We should have a season of players who were abused or mistreated in some way by toxic players their first time around. It could have people like Janet, Kellee, Christina, Alecia, Bill, and so many more. There were so many players who were tortured or screwed in their first game and were going no chance to move forward because extremely toxic people had the power. They deserve a second chance with other players who are actually empathetic, decent human beings
I think a good person to include in this list is RC.
I'd add Mikayla to that list because of the whole Brandon trying to get her out because he was tempted by her situation
The three worst episodes of the show are in a league of their own, and it's not even close:
1. The Dan Spilo merge incident.
2. Sue Hawk's quit in All-Stars
3. Varner and Zeke
It's easy to be a boring episode. It takes a special kind of episode to make me disgusted to be a fan. (At least Varner's ejection was affirming in the positivity that followed.)
#3 is a little less awful because everyone rightfully defended Zeke and stood up against Varner, while in the other two situations there was no silver linning.

Janet, Kellee and Jamal were the only saving graces of season 39. I almost didn’t come back to watching survivor after that because of how horribly badly that was handled.
Janet carried that season. I remember crying when she went home. She is such a hero.
I'd argue Molly, Vince, Chelsea, Tom, Jack, Karishma and Noura were also saving graces of 39 because they were either great, likeable players taken out too soon (Molly/Vince/Chelsea/Tom/Jack) or were the few that tried to vote Dan out at 13 in support of Kellee (Karishma and Noura).
The episode where Kellee and Jamal were kicked and Janet was gaslighted and driven to tears was the first time I had to reconsider my unwavering loyalty to the show. It was horrible, dark and nasty. They seem to have done better tho.

I remember watching Kaoh Rong as it was airing. I was maybe 13 or 14 and I remember my dad and I always arguing about Alecia. I liked her a lot. I thought that despite being ostracized immediately by her tribe, she kept up great spirits and still tried to work with her teammates and talk things out. Everyone else on the tribe however, especially Scott and Jason just always blamed her for every little thing that went wrong. My dad felt the same way as Scott and Jason and just out right hated her and kept calling her a “dumb blonde” Everyone on that tribe was just used to being the best physically wherever they were from so when they didn’t win physical challenges, they just immediately put the blame on her. She was the only one who would voice any sort of strategy because not all challenges can be won by strength alone, but she would just get ignored
10 times Survivor the "social experiment" didn't go as expected or desired.
Ted never gets talked about. It's wild. Like even if you believe he was unintentional of any wrong doing, the way he treated Ghandia after was awful.
Jean Robert was also really toxic. If he did what he did today, he'd face the same backlash Dan did. Maybe even worse.
Rocky bullying Anthony in Fiji was awful. Worse was Probst joining him!

Rocky and Anthony actually have mended fences now and are cool with each other, and according to Anthony, a large part of why Rocky was the way he was is because he pulled a Shane Powers and went through nicotine withdrawal his entire time on the show
I still remember the way I felt watching the Varner moment the first time. My heart dropped it was horrible. Zeke handled it better than most of the human population could ever have. Hopefully one day peoples differences won’t even cross others minds. ❤

I think the worst part about the Varner situation is that in the months he had to reflect after the season he instead decided to write a book and then he took said book to the reunion to promote, essentially monetizing off of outing Zeke. So disgusting.

Varner outing Zeke the way he did genuinely makes me uncomfortable. I'm glad that not only did he had the of the other players there to call Varner out for what he did but that he also stayed very calm in situation where I wouldn't blame him for being upset.

Watching these clips has reaffirmed my belief that the camera people and producers should step in at will when the bullying gets too much. Yes it is a game of "surviving" amongst all the players, but there is no need to degrade the other players in the process.

Based off of what Probst said, I think the issue for the producers was, technically Dan didn't break any laws and since they didn't have anything written in their rule book about it, they were potentially liable for a lawsuit from him if they removed him. Reminder that this show allowed far worse to happen numerous times before this.

@@brittanyscott9994 The Sue/Hatch incident was ugly moment. Now, most the other contestants have stated they dont think Rich had any malice intent and no one saw anything. Hatch has talked about his side. He claims he made no contact with her and that footage backed him up. He did also make a good point about how odd it was that she went out of her way to be close to him when he was naked (not victim blaming, but logically, it made no sense). Her whole tribe was yelling at her to just score the point. Now, Hatch shouldn't have made his joke as it was very inappropriate (as was being naked for the challenge!). What's crazy is despite production paying a settlement to Sue for the incident, they didn't learn their lesson. They allowed Dave in China to compete naked in a physical contact challenge!
Missy and Elizabeth pulled off one of the dirtiest moves ever for sure. I get why people are pissed at them. That said, they were playing a game for a million dollars. They had no idea how bad the situation was or if Kellee was just playing it up to benefit her own game (Unless Im mistaken, didnt Kelee pitch getting rid of Dan?). I think people were too harsh towards them. It's on production to take a player out if it gets that bad. It's on the players to play the game. Honestly, Aaron pissed me off the most. Dude called Janet and Kelee liars because he "would have known about it if it was going on" 🙄.
I think Jean-Robert in China never gets talked about enough. Dude constantly made sexual remarks in front of everyone about Courtney and Amanda. He would also follow the girls around the shelter so he could cuddle with them at night. Took James to put a stop to it. Everyone got mad at Courtney for speaking up for herself and trying to get him out. Oh and then there's the Ted/Ghandia situation...
The Rocky/Lisi/Edgardo/Mookie alliance in Fiji was pretty rough. Especially at final tribal, and ESPECIALLY Lisi. It was probably the most uncomfortable I've ever been watching the show, and is at least part of the reason I didn't actively watch much longer afterward.
Edgardo honestly was the only likable member of that alliance...Alex on the other hand, he was about as bad as Lisi was in those FTC questions, especially the not letting Cassandra defend herself when he incorrectly accused her of flipping on Stacy the round that Yau-Man played his idol

The worst thing I have ever seen on the show was Dan the groper, and how some of the women used that to get further in the game. There are things that no one should have to deal with, in or outside of a game. Dan should have been removed before Kellee left.

I wish Jean Robert from China was removed from the game or at least given some sort of warning by production since he also was doing things similar to what Dan was doing. It probably had to do with that season being much earlier and the way harassment was handled back then, but it bothers me that those incidents weren't taken seriously
varner was my moms cheerleading coach in college. he was mean then too! he would make fun of the girls for their looks and was rude. he hit her up years later promoting his appearance on survivor 😭😭it’s strange that he would do something so rude like that considering he’s openly gay …
