      Could the OLED display variations be color-dependent? You see I got the midnight black Note8. I immediately noticed that its screen is less vibrant than that of my Midnight Black S8. But I figured it could be due to the S8 having more pixel density so I went to the store to compare my Note8 with the ones that were on display for demo use. I noticed that the Champagne Gold Note8 has a more vibrant screen, colors seem to pop more and the screen was brighter overall especially with whites compared the my Midnight Black Note8. I then compared my Note8 with a Midnight Black Demo unit and more or less they have the same display quality. I did set all units to the same display and resolution settings to keep things as fair as possible and from my experience I really noticed the Gold variant having a better display overall?

      Hey, would you say that you give it a regular restart every now and then? Daily? Every 2 days? Do you go many days or more than a week without restarting or powering down the phone and feel it still maintains the performance you like so much? Great video btw.

      Erica Griffin hi there what I find works better under my display settings is Adaptive mode but turn the red down to 50% this seems to make all the colours look far more normal.
      Like you said I found the other modes the white point is to warm looking which Tommy throws the colours off...

      To be fair Apple does lower the brightness of wallpapers when set to create contrast between icons and text with its background. So Apple is manipulating the image set while Samsung doesn’t. I actually prefer what apple does. Keeps the icons more visible.

    I just found your channel and let me tell you: you have an instant subscriber. I have been looking for reviews for days now and this one is by far the best. You are well organized, you do great comparisons, you go into a lot of detail and above all, you actually use the phone and show exactly what you are discussing! It amazes me how many reviewers fail to do this and it is so essential! Keep up the good content.

      Still stuck with my Note5 - but a lot of the features mentioned actually have been pushed through with recent updates! (Currently Android7.0 ) our maybe I just hadn't discovered them all...
      Battery life is still good. Ram and processor not limiting me.
      After having to give back my note7 after a month, I thought the 5 would just be a stop-gap. But it will be used till it dies (Or I do :)

    Greetings from England Erica. I watched both of your films and as a result have moved from years of iPhone to the Galaxy Note 8. I tried the 8 Plus and the X but I much, much much prefer the Note. Thank you very much for the all the tips which have helped enormously with the adjustment. My phone arrived yesterday and by 2am everything was set up and working great. Being able to connect my Iphone directly to the Samsung for transferring data made life so easy. Touchwiz vs stock android - To each his own.
      While I do love samsung experience, I can see why a majority of ppl prefer stock android cuz of its simplicity and fluidity.

    • @Trident_Euclid
      @Trident_Euclid 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dada Well i'm one. I still use my S5.I love Samsung's customization, but we have to accept the fact that this heavy pick on android hogs up a lot of ram which in turn slows it.

    Hi Erica, I have a little Nova tip you might appreciate. I love having apps in folders but I don't find folders aesthetically pleasing and the extra click can be cumbersome. If you edit a folder in Nova to be "swipe to open" it defaults the on click to launch the first item in the folder. It also changes the icon of the folder to be the first item in the folder. So what you have is essentially an app shortcut, that looks like that app, and behaves like that app shortcut (click to open and all the long press shortcuts it has), but if you swipe on it, you get a folder of (presumably) related apps. I find it really useful to get more on my home screen without cluttering it up.
    I really like the way you just just your dock and the right side of the screen for apps btw. I've arranged my Note 8 that way and it feels great seeing so much more of my wallpaper.
    Thanks for your videos!

      Is the gamma something that varies with the device? i.e. like how some of the screens may have warmer or cooler sections of screen? I checked out the Google logo on my note 8, and it looked identical to iphone 8 logo. It only looked like your note 8 when I turned the brightness way down.

    • @EricaGriffin
      @EricaGriffin  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +schmiggy I have seen that the gamma does vary across the brightness scaling. It's worst at the highest brightness. So this does not surprise me in the slightest.

    Been loving my Note 8. I was able to run the psp emulator and actually run God of War which played well to my amazement. Battery is great as I too keep my brightness low for indoors, roughly around 40% which is bright enough for me. Overall coming from a Note 5, I am happy with this device. Camera is also amazing and the live focus has been working great for me. I been using Zooper widgets and it looks beautiful on the tall screen

      Erica Griffin I think you should at least discuss them as some features can get taken away and brought back. Technically app pair is an old idea that was introduced on Note 4 if my memory serves me right.

    Het Erica, just wanted to say Thank You for sharing your tech knowledge with the rest of us. I'm new to the smartphone world and took the plunge in a big way with the note8 - your videos were immensely helpful in getting me acquainted and comfortable using my new phone. Having stepped into this from a flip, I wasn't looking forward to the ridiculously shallow learning curve I was imagining. Watching your videos and watching how you navigate (something that you are doing without thought anymore, but that visually showed me many of the gestures and navigation tricks so many others have known to do forever) gave me a sense of ease, confidence, and competence that I didn't have before. It's a tad intimidating, even for someone who likes tech, to try, semi-blindly, to figure out a $1000 device and not be paranoid that you'll brick it. So, Thank You! Also, I wanted to sayt how awesome it is to see a woman doing these videos among all the guys! You're a great role model for any girls/women who are considering entering the tech industry. Thanks for being a female pioneer in the field. :)

    Where did you get the wallpaper? I am `somewhat envious of those who can use their phone bare or with just a skin. I'm not that brave. It's a shame that I have to cover up what are almost works of art. But I do. I have a UAG Plasma on my 5 and will be getting an UAG Monarch for my 8 along with Whitestone screen protector.

    • @mjhieusuper
      @mjhieusuper 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dudley Forster I use Uag plasma for s8 plus without screen protector, no single crack on screen after 4 months. Currently I use Uag monarch for my note 8, will buy screen protector later, even I already tested naked screen for 4 months with s8 plus.

    Erica, your reviews are a pleasure to watch, you put other reviewers to shame to a level that it's almost embarrassing to watch other attempts! You consistently articulate each point and substantiate all of your arguments. Indexing your videos allow the viewers to go directly to an area of the video that interests them. You strike me as someone who applies themselves 110% in everything they do.... Kudos!

    Display size is irrelevant to battery life with AMOLED. If they're the same generation of AMOLED and have the same number of pixels, a 5 inch and 6 inch will use roughly the same power.

    The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is a steal if you was able to pick it up at a discount. Night time pictures could be better and I still can't get used to the fingerprint sensor location as trying to find it delays unlocking device a tad bit. The Note 8 would be a killer device if it had front-firing speakers as it would be a true work horse. The S-Pen is a must if you truly like to be efficient interacting with your device.

    • @nambinhvu
      @nambinhvu 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      James M Here's what you do:
      Step 1: Put the phone in your right hand.
      Step 2: Look at where your index finger lands. If you're wrapping your finger around to change the volume, slide your finger up along the back of the phone.
      Step 3: *KABOOM!!!* Mind blown, right?...
      I've used other phones and I dunno what all the shit is about the Note 8 fingerprint sensor is... I hate the phones with the fingerprint sensor in the middle below the camera! I have to curl my finger awkwardly so that the tip of my finger is touching it. Are you fkin kidding me?! I think the problem with the fingerprint sensor location is not that it's up top next to the camera, it's that a lot of people hold the phone in their left hand, and yes, then it should be on the other side of the cameras.
      When I use the Note 8 my finger naturally lands on the fingerprint sensor, it's always there to swipe down for the notifications as well. I don't have to reach for it like with the other phones. The Samsung phone IS designed to be in your RIGHT hand. That's the reason the power button locks and unlocks the phone. Your index finger can easily slide along the edge to adjust volume. The edge screen is on the right to easily swipe it out with your thumb. It is designed for one hand usage in your right hand! Take advantage of the swype keyboard, don't use it like the idiotic iOS keyboard...

    Went to the store and tested the Note 8, but it wasn't very manageable for me in terms of height. Would prefer if they had stuck to the Note 7 dimensions, I have the S7 Edge now and the Note 4 before that, I miss the S-Pen but I think I would be more prone to dropping the Note 8 due to the size. :/ Too bad the Note 7 FE isn't that easily available!

    • @Raj-ub4qr
      @Raj-ub4qr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clara Lim true. But high and width ratio make its look more lengthy. But overall is ok if your pocket or bag can adjust it.. Enjoy.

    • @kayakerfuffles
      @kayakerfuffles 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Raj I meant that because my hands are small, I found it very hard to reach the edges or access the whole display with just one hand. I would have to maneuver my hand up the back to reach the notification shade and that would increase the chances of dropping it significantly. Wouldn't be able to use it one handed. Too bad!

    • @Raj-ub4qr
      @Raj-ub4qr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clara Lim........YES Mem. I can understand your difficulties And i think you are right. i agreed with you.... But As I lived in korea for several years ; I can understand that Samsung is korean company but it's globalised & prestigious worldwide moreover its most of its sales comes from overseas. ( Out of Korea). So they think for majority........which like big screen and hight.... God bless all my korean friends . God bless you Clara... Good Luck..

    oleophobic coating is applied onto the glass by samsung. Corning only makes the glass

    • @EricaGriffin
      @EricaGriffin  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Kid In Africa not true, at least not in the past. I have documentation from corning that says they apply the coating and then do their abrasion tests.

    • @DigitalBenny
      @DigitalBenny 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would think the coating is done by Corning. Doesn't seem like something done during component assembly. If anything, Samsung spec's the coating. Because it's definitely a different "formula" than that on Sony's Gorilla Glass...

    • @donm527
      @donm527 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Add Alex Dobie at AC mentioning noticing Oleohphobic wear on hit Note 8 with only a month usage compared to S8 taking months longer to show wear. If you get OCD over fingerprints, I'd go nuts having to see a permanent looking smudge mark from the coating wearing away on a $1000 phone. I wonder if that would be a warranty item.

    The 3 major additions I would like to have personally seen on the the Note 8. 1) Removable Battery 2) IR Blaster 3) Out of the box reprogramability for the Bixby button.

    • @yaseen.94
      @yaseen.94 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      1 and 2) the ship has already sailed mate. The only one which offered removable battery i.e., LGv20 already removed them with v30 and coming to the IR scanner, they are "apparently" old tech, so now we have apps to control tvs ac's etc.
      3) out of box reprogrammability is just not something Samsung will not do. They reason they didn't do till now should tell u that they arent gonna do it in coming months, as they want the users to use bixby as much as they can. If u can reprogram it, then probably u will even forget that the phone has bixby itself.
