    What do you think? Is the Z50 more than a beginner camera or do you put it alongside the Canon Rebel/D3XXX?

    • @tor2919
      @tor2919 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nice review. I really like the Z50. It’s much nicer than the cameras from the competition in the same price class. To answer your question: no the z50 is much nicer than a beginner DSLR. It’s much more solidly built, with a far superior viewfinder with higher magnification, but even more crucially has two control wheels instead of just one like on the DSLRs. So it compares in ergonomics to the mid level D7xxx series.

    • @DarrinRigo
      @DarrinRigo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tor2919 Thanks Tor! I agree that it strikes at that mid level and is certainly in a class above the single control wheel entry rigs.

      I believe it was more meant to be a replacement for the D5XXX, but i can really use it pretty much as I would have used a D7XXX... and I’ve shot some professional stuff with it tbh. Clients were super happy and never complained about anything, so I guess that could work.

    • @DarrinRigo

      @@JustChris97 I think that's pretty accurate - it was aimed at the 5XXX but maybe landed as the new 7XXX tier of camera. I totally agree though - I use it on jobs all the time now.

      Z50 is one of the best apsc mirrorless camera in the market. Its more of d5xxx and d7xxx. It's better then d7xxx series on some points. Compared it with d7200 and it was competing on equal terms.

    Such an honest unbiased review..good job mate. I got the Z50 back in Dec '20 and i picked it up mostly to explore my skills in photography since i always thought i had a knack but never really took it seriously..and my god, this thing makes me look so good. I have learnt alot and have so far captured some pretty satisfactory images. I use the 50-250 for portraits and am not disappointed. Thank you for making me feel good about my decision. your videos are fantastic...its a shame more people haven't found you yet but, i know its just a matter of time before you blow up. My best wishes to you and am eagerly waiting to watch your next. Cheers

    After many years in the Nikon system, starting with the F2 all the way to the D850, I found that the bulk and weight of my gear as well a taking fewer and fewer 'expeditions', led me to the Z50. Bought the 2 lens kit and FTZ and kept a few primes. Best decision for me. Love the camera, love the results! Thanks for the great review!

      Thanks dude! I do think like all roads point to the Z50 if you're looking to run a clean, and tight mirrorless kit in the Z lineup. I find myself grabbing it off the shelf way more than I expected especially if you pair it with some of the Z lenses that are out.

    Absolutely love that I came across your channel, just at the point of switching from a 750/800 to a z6-2 and Was thinking of the Z50/ZFC as a pocket camera for having for all my travel and to have as a back up body in my bag at all times. I think that crops sensors have come such a long way and that the digital format has developed so much that it truly doesn't matter what system you use provided it's paired with the right glass and you know what you're doing. Love from India :) Fan of the straight forwardness your channel has!

    I appreciate your video. I'm retired and photography is my hobby. I ordered the camera a few days ago to replace my D7200. I'm hoping I'll see some improvement in my images by upgrading from the EXPEED 4 processor to the EXPEED 6 and the newer AF system. I'm happy to see good reviews of the kit lens. However, I also have a Z6, an FTZ adapter and a few other lenses to share between the camera.

  • @ianmather5238
    @ianmather5238 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I enjoyed your review. I have a Z50 and it replaced my D5200. I don't use cameras professionally, just a retirement hobby for landscapes etc.
    The single SD slot isn't an issue for me but I wouldn't buy one if I were professional and relied on the recording! One issue that has come to light more recently has been the lack of spare batteries. Third party ones have at long last been given Nikon authenticity codes but they are still rare and expensive. Here in The UK, original batteries are normally six month lead time. Also, some cameras, mine included have developed faulty screens and had to go back for warranty replacement.
    That said, I love mine and for many of the reasons you gave for that matter. I originally replaced my D5200 merely for video use, being an amateur singer / guitarist. The focus hunting was terrible and reviews indicated the Z50 was far better. It is! But that got me interested in using it as a camera for a photography hobby. I'm starting to get there technically, if not composition and artistically (!) and I find that with a few second hand lenses and the FTZ, it can keep up with the big guys in most cases.
    I recently bought a D5600 body as a back up (Nikon kept my Z50 for two months to repair it) and am regretting it for although it is familiar to use, being similar to my old D5200, the Z50 is in another league in term of features, scope and practicability. I suppose the weight has become a factor for me, hence my spare being bought on weight... Still considering swapping the D5600 for an old D500. Curiously though, it doesn't occur to me to swap the Z50 for a Z6/7 etc.

    The SmallRig is available to allow the Z50 to be mounted on a tripod while the LCD panel is flipped down.

    • @0x007A
      @0x007A 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      By the way, the Nikon "media starter kit" ships with the old style SmallRig that requires it to be removed any time the battery needs recharging. Buy the new model because it allows you to remove the battery cover from the camera, attach it to the SmallRig, and then the battery can be removed or inserted by opening the compartment cover. The battery cover is not the easiest to remove from the camera body, nor is it the most durable - a design deficiency considering it is supposed to be user replacable.

    That lens comparison blew my mind. No way 99% of viewers would ever notice a difference with high quality glass on there. I feel like with the same lens, the Z50 in standard color looked better... a bit more contrasty. I film a lot with the ZV1 but I still want this camera for some reason.

    I was about to buy the D7200 until the Z50 came across my radar screen. I bought the Z50 for its video capabilities and as a backup to the D750 for stills. I'm happy with it, but I am curious to know how the autofocus capability of this camera compares to that in the Z6ii?

    Great review, mate! Quick thing, from an audio guy, drop the gate on your audio. Not endorsed here at all, this is my go to tool for this....grab Brusfri from Klevgrand. It's super affordable ($60 USD as of writing this) and super easy to use. I use it a lot to salvage film audio for clients who have too high of a noise floor and background noise but really can't do ADR. RX from Izotope is great, but not as simple and a bit more money, and to be honest, less transparent. That might help get your audio more level and stable for you. Again, not endorsed, just one producer to another. We can all help each other. Great review though, thanks! I still can't decide if I want to pick up the z50 vs the z6ii. I really need a bit more low light for film with what I'm going to do and I know the z6ii can handle it well.

      @DarrinRigo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey buddy! Either or is going to be a massive leap for you from that D3100 so you really can't go wrong. It really depends on your budget! The Z50 + little pancake lens is about $1300 CAD and the Z5 (without a lens) is $1300 CAD. If you have some good lenses already, you could just grab the FTZ adapter and use that glass on the Z5 in which case I'd lean toward the Z5. If you're just looking for a nice, light camera that you can bring with you everywhere and not think much about - I'd go with the Z50.

    Options that exceed traditional
    1. Mount via Hot Shoe w/$2 bracket
    2. Mount using a Top Down Tripod
    3. L-Bracket + Side Gimbal Head
    4. L-Bracket + tilt tripod mount
    Theirs several other solutions that not only allow you to maintain a low profile but gives you full view of the LCD screen and it's menus and access to all controls and battery door without issue.
