      Really shows the legend of the Spartans when countries that had nothing to do with Greece history (USA) use Spartan symbols in our military. Not very surprising considering their famous stand at Thermopylae and their victory over Athens in the Peloponnesian wars. Not to mention they had arguably the coolest Greek God watching over them. Would love to visit these areas one day.

    He did not miss him, when he threw the spear - If he would have killed him, he would have died as a god (because its possible for humans to kill gods, in mythology). But by wounding him, he showed the whole world, that hes just a human, bleeding like every1 else and not a god. Xerxes also realises this, when he touches the wound and sees his own blood (He is shaking and has a shocked expression - he also truly believed, that he was a god himself) - this was a total victory for Leonidas.

      It is symbolic... the damage those 300 did to 800,000+ Persians was probably 20-30k at most. The wound to Xerxes was the same ratio as the wound to his army. A year later when they fight the united Greek army there are only 120K Persians left in their army, showing how bad the attrition and morale cost them in AWOL units.

    • @linconamn747
      @linconamn747 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kinda think he was not missed. Like Russell ward said, he probably wants to show Xerxes of what he claimed and he's a man of his word.

    • @randys3764

      Yeah,
      Leonidas' goal was not to kill him, but to make him bleed, and to make him live from then on with the thought that he is not a God...
      If Leonidas wanted to kill him right then and there
      with his spear he could certainly do it, because we saw at the beginning of the movie how well the Spartans are trained..

    • @Vesohag
      @Vesohag 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@randys3764 But that would be weird, don't you think? When he had the chance to kill him to end the invasion (for now, at least). It does seem that it was way too far away, even with training it seems it was gonna be difficult (that's why he removed his helmet and shield) and yet he managed to hit him, just not exactly on the head or chest where he probably wanted. Still of course it is a win since he damaged his ego. But could have killed him and the gy would have bleed out still.

      After the betrayal of Ephialtes, the name "Ephialtes" received a lasting stigma; it came to mean "nightmare" in the Greek language and to symbolize the archetypal traitor in Greek culture.
      So in a certain way, he lived forever with his name meaning nightmare; traitor

    • @martinsuareznunez2620
      @martinsuareznunez2620 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's not completely accurate friend , the real meaning of leonidas words are , the cursed ( ephialtes) and his name into eternity , the word was spread that he betrayed the 300 , him as a local , knew the passages and every rout of the hell gates , and was bribed by the persians for his inside , ephialtes , TILL THIS DAY , is synonymous of "coward" and "traidor " in Greece, and in old times, honoring your name was a MUST in that extreme society , leonidas curse became eternal and every relative or descendant of the family of the traidor had that stigma forever , it's amazing that this war and encounters did happened , showing us how brave they were

    • @macgonzo
      @macgonzo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@martinsuareznunez2620 I would dispute that interpretation... Leonidas would not have known that Ephialtes' name would have become synonymous with "traitor", nor that knowledge of this would have spread. The Spartan that leaves to spread the news does not mention it to the council. Plus, if Leonidas had intended for Ephialtes' name to live on, I'm pretty sure he would have specifically said this... Instead, he specifically says "May *you* live forever" - a concept that would have been abhorrent to the Spartans, who gain honour in a glorious death in battle.

    A cool bit of history is that the quick witted responses given by Spartans was called Laconic Speech and it was tradition to haze people and see who had the best comebacks. Along with this its also very real what the Queen said in regards to "Because only Spartan women give birth to real men" which was said instead to a council man who questioned her and got back a response that lasted the ages.

The triangle is the most stable structure that works out rather well in battle. If and "as" members die, they structure can continue to pull in closer and closer to keep the strength of its totality intact. In fact, as it gets smaller, it can actually grow stronger due to less movable pieces.

    As Blue said there is alot of small bits that is cryptic unless u already know what it means. the better once are when the queen claps back at the Persian messenger and says "becouse only Spartan woman gives birth to real men" Spartan warriors was feared as the strongest warriors in existence at the time. But becouse the woman gave birth to the men they were treated with great respect sometimes more then the men becouse of this. It is also overlooked the fact that the woman were also well trained in combat as they hade to defend there home when the men was at war. I think there is a line in the movie by Leonidas saying that he could have marshed up there woman to fight from what he hade seen. Another perfect line is Leonidas telling the traitor near the end "may u live forever" That was an extreme insult in Sparta as there was nothing more glorious to a Spartan soldier then to die in battle. So then being told by your king, may u live forever was devistating to any Spartan. U can even se it in the traitors face he immediately drops he´s head in shame the moment he hears it.

    Amazing comic book movie!
    Fan fact, until the line "Persians, come and get them" all the punchlines were true("earth and water, you will find plenty down there", "only Spartan women can give birth to real men", "see my old friend I brought more soldiers than you did", "here is where they die" and of course "come and get them") and they have been registered.
    Also in reality, Leonidas was one of the first to be wounded in battle, and also one of the first to die after the second wave of attacks by the Persians(most likely the second day). His head was put on a spike at the end of the battle for Xerxes to show to the rest of the Greeks as an example. (His body was being protected deceased till the last Greek)
    Secondly, the Greek 'battalion' was also consisted by almost another 4000-8000 Greeks (historians seem to differ), but after the first wave of attack only the 300 Spartans left behind along with 1000 Helotes, 400 Thebans and 700 Thespians which Leonidas commanded.
    The rest of the Greeks that left went to the battleship of Artemision/Artemisium, where the place was of higher geostrategic value.
    Ancient Greek:
    "Ὦ ξεῖν’, ἀγγέλλειν Λακεδαιμονίοις ὅτι τῇδε κείμεθα, τοῖς κείνων ῥήμασι πειθόμενοι."
    Greek:
    "Ξένε, πες στους Λακεδαιμόνιους ότι κειτόμεθα εδώ, πιστοί στους νόμους τους", εννοώντας: "πεθάναμε εδώ ακολουθώντας τις σπαρτιατικές παραδόσεις".

    While the guys at the front were fighting against the enemy, the second row was stabbing the enemy with their spears and the rest behind them were pushing the front row as much as they could to make them unable to move back from all the force by the attacking team. Otherwise, the front row would have been overrun in just a few minutes.
    They also changed the men between the rows so that they can rest and newly rested could keep up fighting. This is how they lasted for 3 days straight.

    Xerxes's elite soldiers were called the _Immortals_ because there would always be *ten thousand* of them (the dead would be replaced until their full strength was reached). Also the exaggerations found in the film (Spartans at war without their full armor--cuirass, greaves and sometimes bracers, monsters, mutants, abnormal animals, etc) were because it was inspired by, and taken from the graphic novel of the same name (300), by Frank Miller.

    Women were highly regarded in ancient Sparta. In other city states in Greece women were second class citizens; but not in Sparta. Women were educated, trained in fighting and athletics like gymnastics and much more. The reason for this was that they needed to be extremely healthy to give birth to the finest Greek warriors,m. They were also the last line of defense in case the main army somehow failed. That’s why Leonidas said to Xerxes, “clearly you don’t know our women, i might as well have marched them up here based off what i’ve seen.”

    The film is very well done and is based on a comic. While some of it is fictional, to a large extent the facts are true in substance. The Greeks beat the Persians several times: in Marathon in 490 BC against the emperor Darius I of Persia. The 300 of Leonidas were annihilated on the seventh day of the Battle of Thermopylae in August 480 BC because a local shepherd, Ephialtes, revealed to the Persians the existence of the path of Anopea, which allowed the troops of Xerxes to take the rear behind of the Greek side, but the sacrifice of the shooters allowed the Greeks to have the necessary time to reorganize. The final victory over the Persians occurred in the subsequent naval battles at Salamina and Micale and in the land battle at Platea, between 480 BC and 479 BC. It can be said that the Greeks managed to beat the Persians who were in much higher numbers, both for the tactical / strategic organization, and because they were equipped with helmets, shields, leggings and other bronze tools (Hoplite warriors), while the shields of the Persians were made of intertwined branches. In 465 BC Xerxes was assassinated by Artabanus, the commander of the royal bodyguard and the most powerful official of the Persian court. The greeting of the Spartan women to their men who went to war was: "Come back with the shield or on the shield", as if to say that the Spartan warriors never gave up. Greetings from Milan, Italy

    The reason why they are called immortal is not because they are actually immortal,
    In ancient times the the Persian Empire Immortals were teh elite royal guard of the Persian Kings, numbering exactly 10,000 men and wore black cloths over their faces to hide their faces. The reason why they were called Immortal was because whenever a Immortal soldier was killed in battle he was quickly replaced by another and since nobody would ever since their faces, it would appear that the soldier was back from the dead and that he was Immortal

    While the word Immortal is used loosely these days as to refer to individuals who can't be killed, It's still an error. You see an Immortal is someone that lives forever but that doesn't mean that he/she is invincible and thus an immortal can be killed by anyone but he/she can't die from natural causes. The Greek gods were called immortals, yet stories from their mythology mentions a god getting killed every now and then.
