    Was, is and always will be my favorite event. I just wish the pageants of today were like those of years ago.

    A well deserve win for Miss Wisconsin. She blew the talent competition out of the water. He Touched Me is not an easy song to sing. She held that note at the end beautifully. I also enjoyed the talent of for Iowa. She sure did twirl that baton.

      Yes, had Iowa as 1st RU. Was surprised she was not in top 5.

    While watching these wonderful, great videos of the Miss America Pageant, it is interesting how the contest has changed over the years. One or two changes include, the girls, oops I mean the young ladies were no longer required to wear bathing suits with 'the flap' below. The winner eventually was no longer given the robe when she took her walk down the runway. Sadly the swimsuit competition has been replaced by something called "sportwear' competition, The title song There She Is no longer is used due to some kind of copyright situation. And worst still the Miss America Pageant has been moved to Las Vegas and I believe, now somewhere today in Connecticut. At one time, the television ratings of this great event during the 50s and part of the 60s always landed in the top 3 TV shows during the season. Thank God, we have these priceless video memories thaat will never go away

    Terri's holding of that note at the end of "He Touched Me" led to a bevy of competitors over the years doing the same. But she was still the best at it.

      @@johnorlando9839 Debbie Maffet, eventually Miss America 1983 from California, also sang "He Touched Me" one year earlier when she competed for Miss Texas. Her rendition did not come close to Terry Meeuwsen's. Debbie won with "Come in from the Rain" instead at Miss America.

    The current Miss America pageant is so completely different, not even recognized as the same event. Hopefully the pageant will return to its roots for its 100th anniversary.

      I hope not, and it won't. It isn't a livestock auction where women are judged by their appearance. It sends the wrong message to women.

    • @sammavacaist
      @sammavacaist 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What makes you think today's young women would want it to? I hope they'll at least eliminate the swimsuit competition. But honestly, it's such an asinine anachronism I'll be surprised if it goes on much longer. I only watch these because I'm interested in the evening gowns from the different years.

      The Swimsuit Competition was eliminated in 2018 . For the first time in the history of Miss America which first was broadcast live in B/W on TV in September 1954 Miss America 2023 will only be streaming online and it will cost you $33.00 to view it!! No network broadcast this year.

    This is the type of competition I miss, it was an event, not a 2 hour job interview. You can’t tell me they can’t improve it while holding on to traditions that the program was founded. Why can’t it be a bridge from the past to the future

      Because the people who can’t stand the pageant are the ones who demand the pageant be updated which in turn turns off those who love it & watch it. So in the end know one is happy and the pageant suffers to the point know one watches.

    if i recall Miss Wisconsin Terry Anne Musesen also won both the swimsuit and talent preliminary competition on Monday and Friday night. It was later revealed that dear Terry had sung and toured with a vocal ensemble called the Fred Waring Singers prior to becoming Miss Wisconsin. Some people felt that this professional tour group gave her a slight unfair advantage during the Miss America contest. It doesn't matter, she sang the hell out of the song "He Touched Me", especially that final note. Terry in her later years went on to become a co-host of a religious program named the 700 Club. She also died recently. She was truly one of the great memorable Miss America winners.
    Thanks for posting this wonderful video

    Miss Kansas Cynthia Sikes portrayed Dr. Annie Cavanero during the first three seasons of St. Elsewhere.
    AT the same time the pageant was going on in Atlantic City, Cynthia's future St. Elsewhere co-star was quarterbacking UCLA to a shocking win vs. two-time defending national champion Nebraska in the L.A. Coliseum.

      She has to be one of the best baton twirlers I've ever seen in any pageant. Holly Mayer, who was Miss Massachusetts 1983 was pretty dynamic as well, but she didn't get to the top ten a Miss America. She was however a winner of a non finalist talent award.

    Miss Iowa Renee Studemann, best baton twirler ever on that stage! So glad she made Top Ten so we could see that. I would have switched Wisconsin and Pennsylvania’s placements because I thought PA was solid in every area and WI just didn’t quite cut it in the looks department then (she was much better looking the following year and looks great now). NC deserved 1st RU for dancing on her toes after her show fell off...ouch!

    I like how they tried to pass off the bathing suit competition as a health and fitness competition by having that gymnastics number, instead of just a chance to judge their looks. 😂

    • @Parker528
      @Parker528 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So regardless of whether or not I might agree with you, you in fact made an error in trying to make your point. if you replay you will in fact hear that Bert introduces this portion of the pageant as the "swimsuit" competition. It does not matter WHAT happened as a form of entertainment PRIOR to this competition that should give you ANY indication that back in 1972 the MAO in ANY way was trying to "pass off the bathing suit competition as a health and fitness competition". Two main reasons being that the MAO did not stop releasing to the public the measurements of its national pageant contestants until 1986. the second is that it was not until 1989 or 1990 when this portion was EXPLICITLY changed in name from swimsuit competition to the new name of physical fitness in swimsuit competition. I never recall the MAO adding into the official name with the use of the word health, as you suggest; although they very often used that word health in explaining that the points awarded by the judges were reflected in part by an overall statement of health of each contestant, as well as physical fitness and appearance. In addition, it was not until those changes in the late 80's when the swimsuit score's composite value towards the overall points that determined the winner was reduced by a large amount, relatively speaking.

      The Penn State gymnastics team was great! Penn State gymnastics alumnus Stephen Nedoroscik '22 won two bronze medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics as "the pommel horse guy" specialist--individual bronze on the pommel horse and team bronze for the USA.
