    The Chief was played by Native American Will Sampson. He was from Okmulgee OK. He was a rodeo performer and was discovered by the producers and offered the role. It was his first film. He costarred with Charles Bronson in The Great White Buffalo. Think about this, his first 4 films he costarred with Nicholson. Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson. Sadly, he died in 87 at only 53.

      Agreed. From the tragically endearing Billy to the disgustingly insidious Grima Wormtongue the man clearly has range. He was nominated for an academy award for this role.
      It's a pity that he's been typecast as a creep in so many films. That probably has a lot to do with him being the voice of Chucky.

    In the novel, by Ken Kesey, the story is told from the point of view of the Chief, who acts as the narrator. You find out a lot more about him. One thing I remember is that he views himself as very small but his size varies depending on his feelings. He doesn't talk because he thinks he is so small that nobody can hear his voice. As you might imagine, McMurphy makes him feel enormous by the end of the story.

    Shan I've been watching your reactions to these movies and although I'm commenting 2 years after you posted the reaction on Cuckoo's Nest I just want to take this opportunity to tell you that you should be a PROFESSIONAL critic, and a highly paid one at that. There are few out there that can really get into a movie on a vast number of levels. Hollywood could save money by showing you some takes to see if they are on the right track before they keep pouring money into a movie that is going in the wrong direction. YOU sir are amazing and your reviews are satisfying in that you pick up on what each individual viewer gets out of these movies from the comedy all the way through some of THE most emostional. I'm not sure of your age, but I know a few younger people that won't even bother to watch movies coming up through the decades.

    One of three movies to win the big five Oscars (movie, actor, actress, director, screenplay). It Happened One Night and Silence of the Lambs were the others. Michael Douglas’s father, Hollywood icon Kirk Douglas, owned the film rights for years and really wanted to play McMurphy but realized by the time it would be made he was too old for the part. Son Michael produced and won the Oscar and paid tribute to his dad. At that time in the 70s Michael was an actor but had only done tv and was not at all A list yet. Saw this when it came out and thought Danny D was a real patient!!! He and Michael Douglas were roommates when they began their careers.

    This is one of my favorite films of all time. Milos is pronounced "Mee-losh". Another great Milos Forman film to watch is "Amadeus". One of the best 80s Hollywood movies in my opinion. The only thing about it is that's currently it's only available in the inferior (in my opinion) Director's Cut version that ruins the flow of that otherwise perfect film. The only way to get the original theatrical version is to either get an old out-of-print DVD, or to pirate a fan "restoration" that removes extra scenes and restores other things that were changed for the 2002 version back to their original state.

    • @ShanWatchesMovies

I haven't watched Amadeus before bit I'm definitely going to. I will look for the original cut (if you know what I mean) but if I can't find it I'll have to settle for the director's cut. this is one of the few times a I've heard the opinion that the theatrical cut was better than the Director's cut. interesting stuff!

      It's the same with "Apocalypse Now". Scenes were added to it, that diminished one of it's greatest characters, Colonel William Kilgore, portrayed by Robert Duvall. Specifically, the ones where Captain Willard and his men stole the seemingly immune from enemy fire, Colonel's surfboard. The other scenes added were okay, weren't really necessary. Coppola should have kept it original.

He was attending Stanford University when he enrolled in a CIA funded LSD study. Kesey got into LSD, joined the Haight Ashbury hippie crowd. Was involved in the now famous 'acid test'.

    I read the book at least 10 times. It's incredible. And I was very ancious about the film because I was afraid it will not do the book justice. But they nailed it. It's different than the book, the pace and storytelling are different, but they bring the main points of the story and the caracters brilliantly across. The best role Nicholson ever played imho. His performance captures R. P. McMurphy perfectly.
    Everybody is brilliant, but one flaw in his character and the story would fall apart. What a great performance. I love the film in a different way, but I watched it as often as I read the book. It's a masterpiece that should be shown more often.
    And a great reaction, too, I enjoyed it a lot.

    The novel this film was based on was quite influential in bringing public awareness to the treatment of patients in mental health facilities. Heavy medication and barbaric treatments were still commonplace, and those with mental illness were thought to be defective and dangerous. Looking at it from 2021, I still see echoes of these very themes in society itself. Great reaction, as always!

    My theatre company put this play on last year and got a bunch of local awards for it. Since the play is set from Bromden's POV and he sees the hospital and everyone in it as parts of a big machine, the set and costume design turned everyone into dieselpunk cyborgs. It was easily the best show I've been a part of. I played Scanlon (who in the book and play had the lines and general role of Christopher Lloyd's movie-only character here)

    I am very interested in your interpretation of this film. I have only watched it about 5 times now and still struggle with 'getting it'. Very strong film, lots of cool stuff going on and a LOT of familiar faces from many other movies.
    I am going to type my comments as the movie/reaction flows. "Amazing actor" I agree, Nicholson is a powerful actor and pulled this one off quite well. Interesting observation of the music and meds, never saw that. His fishing trip was brilliant!! Giving the ones that chose to join him a taste of the outside life, something different from their daily routine. When Chief made it clear he could hear and speak I lost it, one of the best scenes in the movie! The ECT scene hit me a little hard as I had to personally deal with someone going through this type of mental treatment...as it turns out it was completely unnecessary as she had been misdiagnosed several times. I feel at the point where Scatman helps him, he has realized he's going to be there for a while so might as well make it the most fun time he can...make it fun for EVERYone! When Ratched asks the guy how his mom would feel I knew she was evil, using that aspect of his problem against him. Then when MacMurphy chokes her he has realized it too and decides to do something about it. I am at odds with what the Chief does...pros and cons about that.
    There is SO much to take in with this film, so much to understand and decipher. Ratched's character is indicative of the state of mental health in general, having dealt with it on the side for a while during my life. Controlling yet unknowing how to handle it. I really enjoyed your reaction/review, I think it helped me to understand the movie a little more...I guess I will know when I watch it again, thanks!!

    Those are Great films and would like to make a suggestion of similar caliber filmmaking of that era..
    There's too many to name all at once, but I will give 5 Great classics from the same era 70s/80s with great Acting and Direction.
    1.The Godfather (1972/1974) (both part 1 and 2) Starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro , Robert Duvall etc an epic cinematic masterpiece, a classical saga and is widely regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola
    2. Dog Day Afternoon (1975) Starring Al Pacino is possibly the most perfect entry among the dozens of great gritty Seventies movies that provided me with a durable memory library of cinematic brilliance about a bank robbery gone wrong. Directed by Sidney Lumet
    3. The Deer Hunter (1978) is another masterpiece. The cinematography is breathtaking, the characters are tangible, and the narrative, which is broken into three distinct acts, deftly captures what it's like to uproot your life in America to fight an unpopular war in a foreign land and then return. Directed by Michael Cimino
    4. Apocalypse Now (1979) Starring Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall another epic war film Directed, produced and co-written by Francis Ford Coppola.
    5. Chinatown (1974) Starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. A classic neo-noir mystery film directed by Roman Polanski
    These are just a few titles for you to consider and research. There's more to suggest but did not want to overwhelm you with too many titles all at once. Please take these under consideration to react to.

    Best reaction channel on TH-cam. Thoughtful, heartfelt, incisive. If you upped your production values a little. A better camera, better mic, more considered framing & background, your channel could blow up. You are choosing the right films to watch: Mature, thoughtful pieces of cinema, & you respond to them intelligently - emotional intelligence and good analysis. Just up the presentation a little. Look at Brandon Likes Movies channel - he's got a decent setup, and his channel has grown fast. Your reactions are as good.

    • @ShanWatchesMovies
      @ShanWatchesMovies  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      First off, you have no idea what a comment like yours means to me. Thank you so much. I really try to take a different approach to the usual reactions since the process of filmmaking fascinates me as much as the film itself.
      Secondly, Yes! I'm getting a better set up very soon. I started my channel during the pandemic so literally ALL the stores in the country ran out of Logitech webcams so I had to settle for a cheap Chinese one. They'll apparently be in stock some time in September. I've also ordered a proper mic that should arrive in 2 weeks or so! And as for the background, I'm going to improve that too (don't know how yet, any suggestions would help)!
      Lastly, my reaction of Aliens is coming out tomorrow hopefully, day after by the latest. Close Encounters With the Third Kind is coming next so do watch out for those. Thank you again for the compliments!

    • @domcoke
      @domcoke 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ShanWatchesMovies If you can get hold of quite a cheap DSLR type camera - something with a proper lens, I think this may be better. It would be a shame if you were held back by using a webcam. I'd think seriously about how to make your videos look more pro. Doesn't have to be crazy expensive lighting setup necessarily, you can increase incrementally. But without it, the subconscious effect is detrimental to the overall package. And that would be a shame, because the content is good.
      I have seen ...Cuckoo's Nest many time. It's my favourite film. And seeing your reactions to key moments was very interesting. Especially the choking Ratched - being conflicted about it. Knowing you were supposed to be satisfied, but having the emotional intelligence to realise the repercussions. And I loved reaction to chief's ripping out of the faucet.
      Re background - it's really about composing/dressing so it feels considered. And if you had a cheap DSLR with a prime lens, and shallow depth of field, you'd have to worry about it slightly less. Just compose the shot nicely, and you're half way there.
      I have many films in mind that I think you would get a lot out of. And I kinda like the idea that you would perhaps concentrate on the 70s-80s. You seem to get a kick out of that era. I'm gonna list some films: Ordinary People, Kramer vs Kramer, Klute, Marathon Man, Deliverance, The Conversation, Dead Poets Society, Tootsie, Broadcast News, After Hours, Amadeus. Not exhaustive, but these are all interesting films for grownups. I have omitted escapist fare. Nothing wrong with that, but every man & his dog is watching those kinds of films. Which is not to say you shouldn't include them. Nothing wrong with Aliens or Close Encounters. But I sense a depth of feeling in your reactions that is more aligned with films above. Which is why I think your reaction to Cuckoo's Nest is so good.

    • @ShanWatchesMovies
      @ShanWatchesMovies  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the detailed reply.
      I do own a 10 year old canon 500D and I do believe I own the cheap 50mm prime lens. Should that be a better choice over a 2019 high end webcam? If it is I'll be saving some money there. The problem with the 500D is that it shoots up to 30 mins at a time. I don't know how much of a hassle that might be. I'll try to frame my shots better though (I know they are bad, I guess I didn't believe my videos would get more than a dozen views).
      I was an emotional wreck after watching the film. Usually I'm more upbeat during the review section, but I couldn't be for this one even after I tried. It was truly an amazing experience! About emotional intelligence, I love when a director questions my mortality and from what it seems you recommended movies that would provoke a similar reaction, so thank you for that.
      Finally, I have not watched single film you mentioned in the last paragraph except The Conversation (excellent film). I'll be adding them to the list and I'll try to improve my production quality (my younger siblings keep saying the same thing).

    • @domcoke
      @domcoke 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ShanWatchesMovies There may be a way of hooking up your 500D to your computer via USB, and using software to make it seen as a webcam. I did this recently for Zoom calls with a Nikon D800 DSLR. And the 50mm kit lens, set on perhaps f1.8 would look better than a webcam for sure. I think there may be a Canon bit of software for doing it. Do some digging, because I think this may be the solution.
      The list of films I gave you, if I say so myself, are stone cold classics. And many of them are emotive. Ordinary People & Dead Poets Society especially - the latter I think you'll get a kick out of.
