One of the best movies ever. The character painted at the end is truly devastating and sad. Also, another thing to note, Lamotta uses the ring as a sort of confessional. When he's angry, he beats the guy up. When he feels he's done wrong, he allows himself to get pumbled. Truly a brilliant idea!

When the real Jake Lamotta trained him for the role he said De Niro was one of the top 10 - 15 boxers he had ever seen and he had a real shot at getting a title belt if he took it seriously.

One story I love is one from Lamotta himself. He went to the premiere with Vicki, and he didn't like the way he was portrayed. Her turned to Vicki and asked "was I really that bad?".She just looked at him and said "far worse".

Di Niro put on 50lbs. to play Lamotta in the later scenes. They shot the earlier scenes and the film went into hiatus, as De Niro ate his way through Italy. He then returned to the States to complete the movie. He said that at first, he enjoyed being able to indulge himself, but it soon turned into sheer drudgery. It must have been difficult for him to then lose the weight.

The color clips early on are 8mm home movies like the ones shot on actual cheap film bought at a drug store or whatever. That's how we filmed each other back before video tape and phone cameras. Most of the stuff where you ask "was that normal back then?" wasn't generally accepted. It's just that La Motta is an abnormal character.

The story of Jake LaMotta is a tragedy of rage filled self destruction. What the ending is referring to isn’t faith, rather it’s about insight. It’s about how Jake couldn’t see how he was on his own path of self destruction until it was too late. Whether you feel sympathy for him or not is up to you, but I still found the story heartbreaking because I find it really upsetting to see someone ruin their own life.

  • @deckofcards87

You know for a lot of people back then Raging Bull was the first time we'd seen a character drama with a character who's totally unsympathetic. Even to the extent that the story is actually sort of ABOUT that. Scorsese and co were gutsy to take it in that direction. They weren't trying to please a mass audience and it was as personal for Scorsese as it was for DeNiro to have the movie break conventions. For me, all of his filmmmaking career themes about Faith, voilent masculinity and redemption are here defined in the most effective way.

But, I'll bet a nickel we would have covered many of the points you did so impressively in your reaction. I could easily pile on with movie suggestions for you. I'll be very selective and recommend To Kill a Mockingbird with Gregory Peck and a very young Robert Duvall in his first movie role. It is substantially different from what you have uploaded so far, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Variety being the spice of life and all that. What it does have in common with your reactions to date is it is universally considered an estimable film. Best. Leo.

Nice commentary. Editors often don't get much credit outside the industry. Thelma Schoonmaker won an Oscar for this film. Her work is outstanding. IMO Tarantino's films with his longtime editor Sally Menke are better than the ones he did after her passing.

Sally Menke on the other hand was a genius. Her quick cuts are what made Tarantino's style so unique. I completely agree with you on her work but I think Quinten made one great film after she passed away, Django. But you can definitely feel the change in style from there on out!

Love this movie. It’s really interesting seeing Wolf of Wall Street after Raging Bull as well, because Wolf of Wall Street is very similar to Raging Bull, almost to the point of being an extremely loose remake. Both are made by Scorsese, both are based off of a true story, they’re both epics that switch through the different years and decades, both focus on morally corrupt characters, and both have a bitter sweet ending where the characters hit an all time low, then try to come back from it, and trying to move on with their lives. Both are outstanding films, and it’s crazy how Scorsese can reuse so many themes and ideas, and create different masterpieces. Although, I kind of like Raging Bull a little bit more.
