Paying Tribute to our Chinese Ancestors

  • We went to the graves paying tribute to our Chinese ancestors (my husband's forefathers). This is a tradition that can be found in many areas in China, but there are probably differences in how it's done and also when. We offered food, added soil, burned money and bowed down to show our respect and to commemorate the ancestors - throughout the video, my parents-in-law explain the meaning of what we do.
This was the first time Sansan went, so it was a little special. After the ceremony at the graveyard, we went to an uncle's house for a little feast and celebration.

It's so lovely to see you all together... Here in Australia if we want to get together with friends I have to go to her house, her husband had to come to mine (to be with my husband) then we have to video call each house so the wife's and husbands can all be together! With CoronaVirus lockdown, only one person but living in that household can visit at any time! So my husband and I cannot go anywhere together to visit friends. So I'm living vicariously through you all, now!

The graves are in Queens NY, and my husband and I always traveled to New York to tidy up the plots, pull weeds, plant flowers, and bow three times. That’s way simpler than I thought. The tradition seems to be forgotten in today’s world, basically it’s a thankful for what the ancestors had did right?
I wonder the people in cities still do that...it’s good to remember where and how you come from.
Regardless of where you come from, food always brings people together. Doesn’t seems to be fancy or anything, but it sure nice to be together.
I pray a better health and future for your family.

Remarkable. This is the root of Chinese culture. No god in our life and the first teacher is our parents. Parents must treat kids well and help them to learn and live. On the another hand, kids must respect their parents and feed them when parents getting old. This is a frame of China political. not communism, socialism or capitalism but a part of communism, socialism and capitalism. Respect professionals. Everyone must respects teacher, doctor and police man. And every professional must take care every single social member. Our society more like family band. If in a small group, we will show out our birthday to identify the respect rule. Older has respect from young and young will have some kind of caring from older. A small group unit complicates like this. This is why Chinese always uniting together.

Great videography and superb story telling that shows how "Qing Ming" festival is celebrated. We cannot go to the temple to remember our ancestors due to COVID-19 unlike you, the advantage of being in a remote place. From your MIL narration 7:03, it seems that the celebration remain intact in the the countryside despite the changes in China.
In Myanmar (Burma), the Burmese celebrate in remembrance of their love ones who passed away by offering food in the monastery, nunnery, orphanage or to the less privilege neighbourhood and also in birthday celebration. I feel this is one aspect of the culture the Chinese should emulate.

Nice vlog. Spring is the time to look forward and look back. Jewish Passover also happens in Spring, this year it's quite close to the Chinese QingMing. They both use rituals to preserve tribal memory and legends. Goes to show human beings are pretty much the same. Setting aside elements of rites and rituals that seem superstitious from the vantage of modernity, they are useful to reaffirm family relationship.

Most Chinese traditions has their own historical stories. Although originally they are not connected to religion, but traditions and religious affairs have mixed-up in Chinese culture.
If you dont mind, here is the history behind the grave visit tradition:

Yes, its called Cheng Beng & fall on 04/04, ie today. I'm a Malaysian Chinese. We still practice this tradition. Due to Covid-19 & Movement lock down, we do the prayer at home. No gathering & can't burn the paper money as I'm staying in a condominium. Normally after the prayer at the grave, all the family members will eat & enjoy the food offer to the ancestors, like a party without music.

.Of course, our ancestors will be recorded in the family tree. Their names, where they came from, his official position at the time, etc. These tell us where we come from. (So we Chinese people rarely believe in religion, because most religions have not been established for a long time before our ancestors.) Some genealogies have even been recorded for more than two thousand years. These tell us where we come from.
