  • Roy Lupton is out to test a theory. Can Continental driven big game hunting work in the UK? He is joined by experts from Swedish hunting sights manufacturer Aimpoint. Together, they set about trying to replicate the deer drives of Germany, France, Spain and Scandinavia in the South-East of England.

    Why shoot deer?
There are more than two million red, roe, fallow, sika, muntjac and Chinese water deer in Britain’s countryside and semi-urban areas, the highest level for 1,000 years. Numbers have doubled since 1999, according to the Deer Initiative, the UK government’s deer agency.
Deer are an attractive and an important part of our wildlife. However, they have no natural predator in the UK so numbers must be sensibly and strategically managed to keep them in balance with their habitat and to prevent damage to crops, trees, woodland flora, gardens and other wildlife.
Deer cause £4.5 million-worth (Forestry Commission Scotland) of damage to plantations and other commercial woodlands in Scotland. Crop damage is estimated at £4.3m a year according to DEFRA, with the greatest damage on cereal crops in east and south-west England.
More than 8,000 hectares (Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology) of woodland with SSI status is currently in ‘unfavourable’ or ‘recovering’ condition due to deer impacts such as browsing and fraying. Deer can also influence the variety of wildlife in woodlands and other habitats by altering structural and plant species diversity. According to the University of East Anglia’s Dr Paul Dolman, that has resulted in a 50% decline in woodland bird numbers where deer are present, impacting particularly on nightingales, blackcaps, chiffchaffs and warblers.
Deer are susceptible to Bovine TB and may be responsible for the transmission of TB to cattle. They are also the likely driver behind the UK’s increasing tick population (Scharlemann et al 2008).
Happily, venison is a delicious meat. It is wild, natural and free range, and - almost fat-free - it is one of the healthiest meats available today. Results from research commissioned by the Game-to-Eat campaign (Leatherhead Food International Research 2006) suggest that there are real health benefits to eating game. Venison is high in protein, low in saturated fatty acids and contains higher levels of iron than any other red meat.

Great video. Well this had a dozen pages on stalking directory UK with self appointed Deer Manager spokesmen saying you don't need it you only need to stalk in the UK, surprisingly these guys are also the seem to have the biggest opinion one which thermal vision is best value.
Doing 40 driven hunts a year on foxes, rabbits and deer down here I can say, as you know it takes a lot of resources, co-ordination and capital. Especially if you are using dogs such as beagles to push them out, which means kennels and more money. Also it takes some skill to shoot a moving deer and some people don't practice and have trouble on a benchrest getting a 2" group at 100m let alone hitting an animal running at 60km/hr at 50m.
Look no further than the difference of quality between high seats on the Continent versus the UK.

Absolutely superb. And, again, absolutely perfect.

Great hunting and filming. It proves once again shooting driven foxes is far harder than boar or deer lol!

This seems to be a hunt well suited for shotguns and maybe even a Norwegian style of roedeer hunt? We use dogs (often small) and shotguns, combination guns(one shotgun and one riflebarrel) and drillings (sbs shotgun with a rifle underneath). Some use plain rifles but for running shots on such a small game a shotgun is a true advantage.

I know it'd be frowned upon in the UK, but since they're not much large then a big hare or a fox, I'd assume using shotguns with either large shot like T or larger, or a small buckshot like #3 or #4 would be the most beneficial, especially in dense brush and thickets.

We've had some proper murder-fests on fallow by driving them onto gun lines. Usually the muntjac are a by-catch.

Roy has had 26 operations on his hips. He was born with dislocated hips and the operation he had as a baby to correct them went wrong. He is now powered by titanium!

Hi..it's the Shotkam - Shotkam.com... It comes with 12 guage mount but with rifle shooting I've asked the guys for the 28 gauge mount and it works well...still need to "zero" it using the phone app as you would with the shotgun. D
