I went and read your contact page, Tom. You're right, that is really rather remarkably long, detailed, and even multi-part. It's a bit sad that you actually had to do that, but very impressive. #oreolicking. That should be a thing.
Wordsnwood (Art Mulder) the oreolicking thing was a joke about a big scandal with a bunch of British vloggers. The advertising standards agency (I think) found a bunch of TH-camrs being sponsored by oreos and not telling their audience, and people got pretty mad about it

They didn't break any rules on sponsored online content because there wasn't any so rules had to be made. Emma Blackery did a video about what happened with the videos.

I would totally watch MattGreySellsOut. Would also watch TomScottSellsOut if he can make an interesting video related to the thing. LinusTechTips have talked about having a channel they only do sponsored videos on as a thing, due to turning down so many sponsor and ad-spots.
When you watch a few of those "Big British vlogers" and think to yourself: "I'd much rather listen to you guys about those stuff than a few wankers without a GCSE or A levels"

If I got the equivalent of six month's wages in one fell swoop for a brand deal, I would grab onto it and not let go, squeezing it for all I could. "Selling out" beats poverty by quite a long shot. On the other hand, if I had a more than comfortable income already, and didn't need any more than that, I would be more judicious in my brand recommendations, and only keep to those which I actually enjoy and find good use for. And there are plenty of things I regularly use that I would do that for.
Out of curiosity, I went to Tom's contact page. It was an enjoyable experience. Especially the section on Merchandise where there was a phrase reading *please don't email me*.
I don't know if a million people didn't already say this, but at 3:18, that's in Chinese. Mandarin is a spoken dialect of Chinese. The written language for all the dialects of Chinese is the same. I really appreciate you guys being so honest about things like ad revenue. I love that you all haven't specifically sold out to anyone but have just given your honest opinion on something that you enjoy. I also enjoy how Tom labeled which videos on his channels had adverts. Major props to you guys.
2 minutes into the video I was like "every man has his price, and Matt Gray is looking to find his", I reach the end of the video, and he basically says exactly that, ha!
Aye. Ramlösa is a Swedish brand of bottled water. Though the brewery of Carlsberg which is a Danish brewery owns it. So not fully incorect calling it danish. ;)
I do enjoy these videos a great deal. Their laughter is so genuine and it brightens my day. I sound so hallmark I know, but they're cool dudes and I don't ever want them to stop making The Park Bench.
Tom, one reason I (and I suspect many other people) watch is because of 'tangents', I love when you two go off on a random tangent and end up laughing!
six odd years later for this video and there are still impressionable teens (like me :p) watching your videos and definitely hailing you guys as role models, tom
Not having to skip through 3 minutes of video game, shaving, watch or coffee ads, and no "like, comment, subscribe and ring that bell" is why I've binge watched your videos. Selling out may cause lower viewing numbers.
I'm watching you because unlike vloggers, you're not trying to show off yourself, or something or somewhere. I'm watching because you're interesting as people, and the topics are usually well done and the conversations go naturally.
One thing I really appreciate about Tom (and Matt! but I'm mostly referring to the other channel) is his commitment to honesty regarding things like sponsorship deals. I forget which video it was, but I know there was when where he explicitly stated that a company had paid for his flight or something, but had no editorial control. Similarly, he's implied that if he got paid to promote something that he would make the fact it was paid for very obvious. Whether he "sells out" or not, that integrity is appreciated.
I think they couldn't keep it up for a whole video. One of them would start giggling. Or one of them would say something cynical, and then they would start giggling. Which is probably why we like them so much :-)
looking forward to it, i love your other vids, but Citation Needed is by far my favourite. Loved the live shows, and you guys were all really nice afterwards. I cherish my ticket, signed by all four of you :)
I'd just like to say I appreciate your channel because it's very authentic. Even if you were to accept sponsorships from things you authentically liked, I'd probably be okay with it. Just so long as it was genuine.
I spit my spaghetti out when he said "Aubergine emoji - 99p" but nobody in my family who saw me overreact got the joke, because we're Americans and nobody knows aubergines are just Eggplants.
Seriously Matt would make an incredible guest on have I got news for you , Or eight out of 10 cats“ do you are genuinely hilarious. Half the stuff you say has already been used on some of those big shows as “bits” for a dozen comedians
Do you have to worry about the British sponsorship regulation thingy with the Amazon affiliate links? Also, I get that it's unBritish, but you should actually do some sort of rate sheet so if for some reason someone does want to buy your integrity for enough money they can do so.
It's considered good practice to inform your audience, but there's (unless the guidance has changed recently!) no official requirement to because they haven't had editorial control. -- Tom
Long time Tom Scott subscriber, only just discovered this channel with the previous video about hearing protection. Absolutely subscribing, oh and nice Enter Shikari t-shirt Matt!
You were recently asking about video ideas at Universities. It's not quite a University, but you should try to get a tour of the P4.1/P4.2/P5 rocket engine test stands at DLR Lampoldshausen. Especially the test setup for vacuum (upper stage) engine tests is remarkable.
I'd been thinking about hearing protection for gigs cos I'm partially deaf anyway but didn't want to ruin the sound quality. I am glad you did the review because it made me get off my ass and protect my ears, the day after Avenged Sevenfold / Disturbed, I had no issues and the gig itself sounded great!
I can't look at the affiliate link in the description. I wasn't interested in actually buying anything, but was curious as to what was linked there. But instead of showing that, it forces me to fill in a postcode for the uk... I'm not from there and now I can't even look at this thing you're selling. Thanks amazon!
Thank you for educating me. This video prompted a google search and I now know what a sausage roll is. I now also have a void in my life because this delicious-looking item is not commonly sold in the states
I joined a website that allows you to apply for brand deals but I found that most of the products are cheap, will not do what they claim and full in the pseudoscience category. I applied to two as they looked to be good but I see other that say that they have applied for hundreds, so it just goes to show that some channels will sell out for any amount of money and they don't care about their reputation.
I imagine Matt's more interested than Tom because he doesn't get as many emails to wade through, but also because he still works a 9 to 5 job and no matter how much he may love it, the thought of bringing in enough money on the side that he could afford to quit whenever he wants is probably a lovely one. :) I often buy earplugs anyway, so I probably would have gotten a pair of the ones you recommended if I lived over there as well.
Tom, you should sell plain red t-shirts as merchandise. You don't even have to print anything on them. :-)
He should
I was about to suggest this
This is actually a wildly good idea
He should talk to a T-shirt producer, and find a certain shade of red that no other T-shirt producers use.
Then he should make them print plan T-shirt in that shade of red, and of course he should start using those exact T-shirts.
And then he should promote them as "Tom Scott T-shirts".
if it were for charity then he probably would.
And before you start, I'm not getting into a discussion about the American word for biscuit meaning scone-like dumpling instead. --Matt
Matt and Tom I couldn't have even watched the video yet, and you posted this 3 days ago. Ok then...
Will Tom get into a discussion about the word aubergine instead of eggplant?
Matt and Tom where do the biscuits for mystery biscuits come from?
If Citation Needed got the offer for a brand deal, i think instead of taking it, you should give the air time to some educational institute or charity

-- Tom
Joshua Hillerup Yeah its only on TV where brand sponcerships are banned inside the show itself
Ah, OK. I didn't get the rationalization for it.
Tenebris Scarrow I'm sure offcom now allows it I'll have to check up on that
I am surprised you haven't.plugged* your product placement video here, Tom!
*Irony aware.....
''We can spread the love of a British biscuit'' is an amazing slogan
Matt, you are one of the most adorable people! I love watching the two of you; you both are so funny.
Long time Tom Scott subscriber, only just discovered this channel with the previous video about hearing protection. Absolutely subscribing, oh and nice Enter Shikari t-shirt Matt!
I'm so happy you went with the bonus link.
5:30 As soon as they said "mobile game" I knew it was Raid Shadow Legends
People really take the piss with those ads
Tfw even Tom Scott gets approached by raid shadow legends
You were recently asking about video ideas at Universities. It's not quite a University, but you should try to get a tour of the P4.1/P4.2/P5 rocket engine test stands at DLR Lampoldshausen. Especially the test setup for vacuum (upper stage) engine tests is remarkable.
I'm an impressionable teenager... But I'm here for the bad jokes and rambling, not 'Tappy Tappy Video Game' recommendations!
Every man has a price, and its much lower than that man thinks it is.
Didn't realise the link to the ear plugs was an amazon affiliate link, glad yous got a kick back from me protecting my ears
When you said ‘sausage roll models ’ I literally choked on my breakfast 😂😂😂😂
Tom turned down a raid shadow legend deal outrageous
6:50 quite a nice Thatcher impression
It's amazing how much entertainment I can get from watching a few guys rambling about random stuff. Have a Like.
Matt, have you ever heard of Mukbang? Might be for you....
Callum White YES; please?
4:24 Is that a reaper in the background noise?
You are both just enjoyable to watch/listen to.
If you linked where you bought your bulk t-shirts I'd 100% buy from there
I've always worn earplugs to concerts. I used to be a sound technician and bands would never be quiet enough!
Sponsored by Life: The singularity ruined by lawyers.
Why doesn't this have more likes?
I am a 19 year old Yorkshire lass and this beats any "big" British channel comedy gold!
I joined a website that allows you to apply for brand deals but I found that most of the products are cheap, will not do what they claim and full in the pseudoscience category. I applied to two as they looked to be good but I see other that say that they have applied for hundreds, so it just goes to show that some channels will sell out for any amount of money and they don't care about their reputation.
thanks for the biscuits links, do you happen to have a link to a mystery biscuits manufacturer?
Matt: 'I'm a man who likes my biscuits'
Did someone mention... MYSTERY BISCUITS - OH YEAH!
Next park bench Matt is wearing a Gregg's T-shirt.
You guys are killing me!!!
Only 210k??? U guys deserve more
I mean, I've always worn earplugs since you mentioned it and also brought new ones via the amazon link
Tom's full body laugh is so contagious
I imagine Matt's more interested than Tom because he doesn't get as many emails to wade through, but also because he still works a 9 to 5 job and no matter how much he may love it, the thought of bringing in enough money on the side that he could afford to quit whenever he wants is probably a lovely one. :) I often buy earplugs anyway, so I probably would have gotten a pair of the ones you recommended if I lived over there as well.
