I LITERALLY thought “cobalt” and his name “colbert” were similar, and then Hannah went ahead and said it! I laughed so hard that she saw that too lol

Most of the time when Colbert is interviewing people, even other comedians, he comes off as the one who's smarter, and quicker on his feet from an improv standpoint. He's usually the one catching the other person off guard with the punchline. So the way that Hannah Gadsby keeps catching HIM completely off guard in this clip is pretty insane to watch. She literally must be a genius at comedy

Hannah Gadsny and Nicki Minaj kept Colbert on his toes. Lol. I never thought I’d put those two names together, but I LOVE it
Totally insanely brilliant timing
Or just a genius in general, haha. She's incredible. I think she has no consideration for the fidgety business of celebrity and putting on a show for the public, in terms of being someone you're not. She talks a lot about being on the spectrum, and I think that she really accentuates that it is a true gift to be neurodivergent, especially in a community that subsists on fakery, like show business often does. She never seems to be worrying about camera angles or what the public will think in the same way as neurotypical folks might do.
Also, that's not to say that neurotypical folks don't hold similar values. Not trying to shit on any people, but rather the industry, is all.
This is some straight-up deadpan Aussie humor. Not quite as wry or self-effacing as Kiwi but absolutely brilliant. I'm really looking forward to seeing her in person on her tour this summer!!
I saw her "Douglas" show in 2019 and I felt ill from laughing so hard for the entire time. She is amazing!
Loving how she knocked Stephen out of his sobriety; had to wait until his funnies within stopped giggling when she said: You have your name on your mug-That's Needy with a look that'd pin him to the wall. Her description of how her mom mother is so classic, I feel for many of us born in 1950's, where Queen's E's role modeling of how to treat your own: send 'em all away to strangers in boarding schools to ensure they are all attachment disordered & unable to read the room, speak truthfully or realize they stink like sewer rats.
Pretty sure Madagascar-ians are unique in humour & life experiences being REMOTELY connected, that's 8976 km to Oz, especially it's 2021-22 deadly STATE regime war against it's own. As if culture is stagnantly linked to Islanders, away from

They have great chemistry. How Stephen handles the tension is amazing. You can tell that he finds joy in how refreshingly honest Hannah is.
I can never get enough of the open adoration in Colbert's eyes when he looks at Gadsby. You can always tell when he really likes someone.

I just cannot see how some people say Hannah Gadsby is not funny. She is one of the funniest comedians I have ever seen, and in a very natural and unforced way. She is truly brilliant, and takes one on a journey with her that draws you in, tumbles you through the laundry of life, and leaves you limp on the clothes line afterwards.
Both of them are intellectuals, and what both of them do asks an audience to see layers in the satire and to keep up, and that’s sadly more intelligence and education than most folks who live here in Central Ohio can muster.
She also just does not care if you don't think she's funny. Not one single solitary f**k is given on that issue. This is a key part of the charm in her comedy.

Hannah is awesome. You can tell she is tough and doesn't try to impress anyone, just like her mum. She is almost more of a truth teller than typical comedian. She was going to quit comedy, but then her truth telling just blew up, and was one of the most successful netflix comedy specials ever (Nanette)

It's so brilliant that she made a joke about him being needy for having his name on the cup in her mother's character and then jabbed him again about cobalt being close to his name and then drinking from the cup to bring it all full circle.
I don't know how many people are gonna get that joke but it's just brilliant.
Ahhhh we thought Stephen was arrogant for having his name on a mug... but get you thinking you're the only one who understands a really quite clear joke.

@@rileymcphee9429 I hate to explain a joke but I compared your comment in terms of arrogance to Stephen having his name on a mug. Hannah was clearly just poking a little fun at Stephen with that comment and didn't think he was actually arrogant.
By proxy, me comparing your comment to that was light heartedly pointing out that you'd just explained a pretty obvious joke to the whole comment section with the assumption that most people wouldn't get it.
Unless of course, by saying "I don't know how many" you were actually referring to the fact you assumed a huge number of people would get it, but how huge? Well that you don't know. Though, that feels like a slight misuse of the idiom.
In an interview once she referred to the full circle thing of a joke as "call backs" and them being a part of her signature style

I've been seeing Hannah on local TV here in Australia for many years, as a standup comedian, in other TV shows, and for her art history TV series, "Nakedy Nudes". When she hit the international stage it was totally deserved and seeing her rip Stephen like this had me in stitches.
That art history show sounds awesome, but that is a risky title to search at work.
On the ABC that was so good. I loved her talking about Picasso and his misogyny.

Hannah is a joy and I wish she’d just do a two hour special ripping apart classic art cause the small segment she does during her special “Douglas” just isn’t enough..the combination of humor mixed with her actual historical knowledge is a freaking joy to behold
She does have three of those, very old art criticisms on TH-cam - you may already know this, just putting it here in case. :) I wish there were more, but unfortunately her entire TH-cam channel last I looked was just those three videos.

I had to pause at the "None of your business!" line and get a glass off water. It made be choke! She is hilarious. Perfect timing.

Nanette remains the most brilliant bit of television I have ever seen. I was just expected standup, and got something so much more worthwhile.
I've never heard of her before. And I absolutely LOVE her style. Next stop watching Nanette.
Be prepared, it's pretty emotionally challenging. She's been through some extremely stuff. Many say they laughed and cried, and it was worth the journey. :)

I got to see Hannah Gadsby's show Doug in Oxford before the pandemic after watching Nanette on Netflix. It was one of the best comedy shows I've seen - she is so knowledgeable and I love how she brings disparate ideas together in a unique way. I definitely hope to see her again live one day.

I love the audience’s reaction to this. It’s so Australian! Aussie’s, particularly of a certain generation don’t react well to brilliance. “You like attention don’t you?” And certainly don’t do open demonstrations of affection - “ I fed you didn’t I?” It’s great that the American audience who we see as painfully emotional and serious got this.
She’s Tasmanian. An island off Australia…. The people are completely different. As in northern and southern parts of the US.

@@wormpatrol Yeah, I was in my early 20s... so I know the turtles and a catchphrase or two... but I saw maybe 2 episodes when babysitting or from a friend's younger sibling. I think Colbert is like 3 years older than I am.

I have never laughed this hard at any of his interviews, omg her as her mom is the funniest shit I’ve seen in a LONG time
I know comedy is like art - super personal and what you think is funny someone else will think is dumb. But good lord I find Hannah Gadsby flipping HILARIOUS. I can't remember the last time I laughed that hard. It's the little moments - the noises, the pauses, the facial expressions, the one note change in her voice when she's dropping a line - it's MAGIC.
yeah, much more subtle than Sarah Millican (who is also cool, but very different)
I am Tasmanian, saw her at the market in Hobart once last year. Wanted to say hi but I chickened out lol 😆! She was with her wife they looked happy.

I had never heard of her, but I am hooked now. Gonna find her shows and likely buy her book. I'd bet it's as funny as "And So It Goes" by Linda Ellerbee, a book I still chuckle at decades later.

Douglas isn't heavy its complex. The new show is just fun. Saw it live in Hobart in it's infancy. Waiting on a netflix special to see it again all grown up.

@@jonathanbaird Carlin was hilarious almost every single second on stage. So was Pryor. Comedians are supposed to make you laugh about the evil or absurd of life. She just talks about it on stage completely serious. It’s like paying someone to make you more depressed about life.
