Guitarist and master producer Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar, Grady, Snakes of Central Texas) is a HUGE P-94 guy - and his tone is monstrous. He has a signature Gibson P-94 equipped SG that was a Canada-only release (it was actually the original “SGJ” as a pun on his initials, before the lower end SGJs of the mid-2010s). You should see if you can get your hands on it to document someday, although it’s pretty rare.
One of my favourite guitars is a Hamer USA with Seymour Duncan Phat Cat pickups (which are their version of the P94). Back in the day the Phat Cats were better in my opinion than the true P90s that Seymour Duncan were making, probably because the SD P90s at that time used ceramic magnets whereas the Phat Cats used Alnico.
This is one of my favorite looking Les Paul's that you've documented in a while Austin! I love that color green and the nice glossy top and the green back and sides as well, looks amazing! I only wish they would have done a gloss finish on the headstock and put the silk screen Les Paul logo on it. I wasn't as crazy about the white knobs but I could live with them because everything else works so well. Surprised at how nice the P94 sounded, something different. If money Was No Object I definitely would be grabbing this one for myself!
Excellent top ! The green makes the flames pop so much . Kind of looks like an anaconda burst without the black border . Keep up the great work Trogly !
p-94's rock! i had a neck version matched with a seth lover in a full hollow guitar and that was probably the best vintage toned guitar ive ever heard in 40+yrs of playing. and yes they took overdrive very well.
Yeah, this is a bloody expensive guitar, and your conclusion is twang. Many people refuse to say more than a oneliner. This is what you end up with. Next model has twang boom, I reckon?
Love your attention to detail - you show every pro & con on the example that you have. I love the white speed knobs, however I agree with you that the plastic parts should be black, to match the head stock. Beautiful finish on the top.
I put a Toneriders P94 in the neck of my Vintage vs6/sg and it sounds awesome. P94's are a great option for getting some different tones and extra bite out of a humbucker routed guitar
Salutations Austin! Nice guitar! I really like the green finish! I tried to purchase an Emerald Green Flame Top Les Paul a couple of years ago, but ended up getting ripped off, and the guitar never arrived, fortunately I didn’t lose too much cash in the process, but I am extra cautious about ordering online nowadays, so it was a good learning experience. This was a good demonstration of the P-94’s too. Thank you for posting these videos! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨🎸

I have a 96/97 Gibson Les Paul Studio that came stock with P-94 pickups and It rocks. I have been searching for more Gibson P-94 to replace in son of my other guitars
I have an Epiphone Nick Valensi (The Strokes) signature Riviera with Gibson P-94s. They aren't a quite as snappy sounding as I'd like, but that's probably the semi-hollow body softening them a bit.
The gator skin on the pickups is a common leatherette material you can buy easily online. I’ve used it to cover a couple of amp cabinets. Looks cool on an amp, cool to see it on a pickup.
That is a very nice guitar, from its beautiful top, to the excellent sounding P94 pickups. I think the resonance of it acoustically is being captured by the pickups, and is adding to the richness of its tone. The guitar might look even better if it had a green Truss Rod Cover. I'd be tempted to ask Gibson if they could do that for you. It would make the satin Headstock look extra cool if it matched to top.
Those stark white pickup surrounds just hurt. The headstock is awful, the truss rod cover is gross. Apart from that I like it, yep! even the croc skin pickups (No one ever said I suffered from good taste). Sounds great.
I bought a cheap Oscar Schmidt 335 copy from a local music store in my area....Previous owner put P94s in it....I love that guitar...I have yet to see one with the original humbuckers in person I want to play one to compare it.
I'm a big fan of the P-94's. I got a set in my 2008 Gibson Les Paul Push Tone. It came with a set of Burstbuckers & P-94's. I usually rock one of each in mine but I do love the pair of P-94's together. Love the color on this guitar. I've got to see where I can get a set of alligator skin covers for my pickups. EDIT: Having to put a piece of tape on a solder joint to get it to work properly on a nearly $7000 guitar is ridiculous! That infamous Gibson QC strikes again.
@@markcheetah4960 I'm just a casual at home hobbyist but I couldn't imagine gigging with a les paul considering how heavy they are...it'd definitely be a home studio guitar for me.
Wow, man that is an awesome guitar, and those pickups, amazing. I’m not a green guitar guy, but I would definitely own that one. The treble bleed is for when the volume is rolled down, you don’t lose and treble. Normally, it would get a little bassy when the volume is rolled back.
Yeah, I didn't understand that either. It could be Trogly was mistaken. I've had really old P94 pickups that were just a single conductor (like a vintage PAF), and then I've had modern P94 pickups that were 2-Wire with a shielded braid/cover. The 2-Conductor allowed the pickups to be wired out of phase.
@@iknowyouarh It could be something as simple as Gibson only using the 4-Conductor wire, easier to just buy the multi-conductor and not use half the wires half the time. It would simplify purchasing and slightly streamline production.
In this guitar, they taped the extra two wires off. When I first got it - the neck was stuck in a "coil split" like mode. Gave it a real thin tone so it must be capable of a tap or something
I want that so much! I love green guitars, and that would be perfect for me. I'd change all the white plastics, and the machineheads, but that's about it.
Those P94's rip. I'd definitely swap black plastics in for the white & stick some vintage Kluson tuners in there though. An R9 should have proper tuners (imho of course).
I think more people would use them in an SG. You'd get a lot of twang and bite with with a slightly more rock-'n'-roll look tone than a fender but could still hang as country guitar.
That is an incredibly cool colour for a guitar that screams unique, but to hell with that price tag. If I ever see one like this at an affordable price range though, yep, definitely my kind of thing.
Breathtaking!!!! I bought an IYV from Vietnam in that colour a few years back. If and when Gibson puts out something affordable in that colour, I'd be on it like a fat kid on cake.
I'd love to see an R9 with a flamed top, an orange honey burst finish, with black plastics, black binding and a white headstock...it would be like a tiger haha
It's a cool guitar. Funky to have the alligator-skin effect on the pickups and the top is incredibly striking. The dings and tooling marks are a "feature".
No, it is not 4- conducting wiring... It's something what i have learned today. The read one is "dead". They have got 4 wires plus ground but only 3 of them are in use
I wish Gibson would reissue the Alnico 5 Staple single coils. I had thought switching out my humbuckers on my ES175DAW to P94s so if they aren’t available that sucks
Beautiful guitar, silver knobs would be better, not sure about the contrast between satin back and high gloss front. The back will age so much more depending how much its played.
Love the body flame but the black satin headstock, just looks to plain.. and then those tuners.. please not on an R9 use the the trans white keystones.. IMHO!! Nice review Trogs
super nice that the neck refused to muddy up with and dirt thrown on it. a regular PAF type in the bridge would be fantastic as well. that is 100% an outstanding players guitar. I'm glad gibson thought so too.
Trogly!!! This guitar should be the Trogly's "Signature Model" all the guitar needs is a gloss finish headstock with a lil' dragon inlay where the LP logo usually is.
Those really sound good. like really good. Why don't we see more of them? I guess Gibson market is not big on change but that's a great sounding guitar.
I'd imagine it is because if Gibson was going to fit a guitar with P90 sounding pickups... they'd just put P90s in it rather than a humbucker-sized one. P94s are really only for "modders" in my eyes that want p90 like tone in their humbucker guitar... which doesn't make much since that Gibson doesn't sell them separately anymore haha

That is one of the best looking Gibsons that I’ve ever seen. Gorgeous!
I think the closest thing to P-94's that are widely available are Seymour Duncan Phat Cats. I've got one in the neck of my 2010 Epiphone Wilshire Pro.

Some of the most amazing guitars I’ve ever seen I have appeared on this channel. Thanks👍🏻
I am definitely feeling that guitar! Gibson needs to make more like that! It sounds so good!
I put the candy apple dark blue suround in several passes lightly to my taste to break up that much grn ,on flame top turned out paradise .gold hats.
Croco-Mello-Tron ...I love the total package ...The only thing might be the knobs ...black or even cream or gold...The PU rings too
