  • With all of these nostalgic musician movies coming out, I think it's far to say that Universal's premise for Yesterday is BY FAR the most interesting of them all! The concept of the world forgetting the Beatles, and being retaught their songs through a newcomer is a great idea! But unfortunately, Yesterday managed to miss so many truly intriguing points. Here's where everything kinda went wrong, and how this movie COULD have been an instant classic.

A montage of Jack finding all the Beatles, and then bringing them to John Lennon, and talk to them about what he's been doing, and how important the four of them are in another universe. They could've even gotten Paul and Ringo to act in the movie, and act like they don't know the Beatles. People would've loved that.
Although Paul and Ringo probably would've been uncomfortable around two guys pretending to be their close, late friends.

Without the Beatles you don't have:
    The Traveling Wilburys
    Wings
    The Plastic Ono Band
    The Monkees
and as was pointed out in the movie, Oasis.
Without the Monkees you don't have:
    The Archies
    The Bugaloos
Somebody else writes and records a song for the James Bond movie _Live and Let Die._
The Beach Boys album "Smile" sounds a lot different.
Several songs by the Byrds sound different.
The band Klaatu is a forgotten footnote, because there was never any rumor that they were the Beatles in disguise.
The vultures in the Disney animated movie _The Jungle Book_ look and sound different, if they are there at all.
The playlist at Woodstock is a bit different because, while the Beatles didn't play Woodstock, a few of their songs were covered.
The following movies are never made:
    _Hard Day's Night_
    _Help!_
    _Yellow Submarine_
    _Can't Buy Me Love_
    _Norwegian Wood_
    _Backbeat_
    _Lucy in the Sky_
    _Yesterday_
and probably others I have forgotten.
The Japanese group Pucci Moni does not record "Chokotto Love" and if they do it doesn't include the line (in English) "All you need is love."
Babymetal does not cover "Chokotto Love."
The Japanese group Onyanko Club does not record "Valentine Kiss" and if they do it doesn't include the line (in English) "Love me do."
And perhaps the greatest loss of all: William Shatner does not record his amazing cover of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds."
These are not random things like Coca-Cola, cigarettes, or Harry Potter. These are things which are different *because the Beatles never happened.*

British music never makes it big in America so the pre-British Invasion status quo of girl groups, R&B and surf rock is preserved until they run their course by the 70s and give way to something new. The Beach Boys never get super experimental since they weren’t competing with the Beatles. Psych rock still happens, but remains a niche genre without the Beatles and Beach Boys pushing the boundaries and giving it worldwide exposure.
The 60s revival in the 80s would sound very different since a lot of that music was Beatles-inspired, like the spongetones.

Well, you might find the history of popular culture over the last fifty years to be inconsequential, but many of us do not.
Somebody else pointed out that without the movie _Yellow Submarine,_ there either isn't any _Monty Python's Flying Circus._ And thus, the annoying e-mails we call spam are called something else. Now, is that a little thing? Yes, yes it is. But these little things add up, until the world has a different feel to it.

Also, I wish Oaul and Ringo would have been the "fans". Like why would those other guys actually care about whether or not the Beattles existed,\. Would've made more sence for the actual Ringo/Paul to be happy their music was made and became popular, even if they didn't create it themselves. Also, I'm sure they'd be happy to see John again.

While Paul may have had a cohesive influence on the band, and perhaps was the more knowledgeable musically at the time, it was John's action, drive and initiative that caused The Beatles to become something. K. Rowling died on that bus that she came up with the idea for Harry Potter on, and her one regret in life was that she didn’t spend more time with her family. This inspired her to connect with Jack on a much more romantic and personal level. See, that’s one of the problems with these independent artistic movie types. There’s a benefit to franchising that transcends just making money. If it’s a good story, it deserves to be franchised. I’d love to see this universe. There’s so many things that you could re-create. Imagine a kid in America becoming famous for re-creating the career of Elvis Presley, or Bob Dylan. Or maybe somebody rewriting Star Wars. Or drawing Mickey Mouse and discovering that you could make a whole Disney World out of it, except this time do it his way. What if the Henson family wanted Jim to still be alive, so somebody else create Kermit the frog and the Muppets.

But what they did not anticipate was that the ripple effect over the course of time was that bands, musicians, Coca Cola and other random things would be drastically altered or disappear entirely from the timeline as we know it. I think Jack and the others remember because they have some thing that links them to this change in the first place. Future movies would be amazing! Here’s what my Beatles movie would look like:
Four guys named Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr are the only ones who remember the famous musician “Andrew Beetle” who went big in the Roaring Twenties. They’re brought together through a subreddit (which they are the only members of) and decide to meet up, discovering fragments of the late musician’s music along the way. After playing a couple of love songs, a name named Ed Sullivan, who is actually Andrew’s godson, recognizes some of the songs that his missing godfather used to play to him at night. He brings them on the show and they get huge immediately. Following in Andrew’s footsteps, they make a couple more love albums before going with their own preferred style. But as time goes on, a curse unfolds due to their rapid popularity that breaks the band apart. By 1970, they’ve broken up, but their songs remain as best ever made. As they grow old and die, doing their own solo events, John and George meet with Andrew in heaven. The twist? Andrew is actually a time traveler by the name of Ed Sheeran.

And the way the powerout happens is they're driving in a car together when the bus crashes into their car, and then altogether they're the only ones who remember the Beatles, and judging from who acts like what Beatle, they take their role, (whoever is the John and Paul of the band act as the Lennon-McCartney and take credit for the songs they wrote while whoever the George is gets the credit for his written songs) and during their rise to fame, tension builds within in the band, with the media giving more praise to the Lennon-McCartney of the group, causing whoever is George and Ringo to feel neglected, and whoever's John might find his own Yoko and bring her along everywhere, and after a while, the band splits up to record the Beatle's solo careers from their respective Beatle, and eventually they could locate the Beatles themselves (since John and George would be alive without the Beatles and cigarettes) and after that, they would do a highly anticpated reunion show and reveal the truth there

It's pretty realistic. I can remember every beatle song and could, if in that situation, reproduce all of them, including obscure ones....See, we beatle fans actually do remember the lyrics and chords.
The questions are actually pretty irrelevant. What are Paul and Ringo doing? Why not George too? If John lives, George might live too.
The movie answers these questions in an oblique way...Lennon says he spent his life sailing, so he left Liverpool with his sailor dad, and didn't stay with his aunt. Paul is probably a retired teacher, Ringo is a retired hairdresser, George is a retired electrician. Lennon was the seed of that band. With Lennon away from Liverpool , no Beatles.
It all actually revolves around the miracle that the Beatles were. Right place, right time...Otherwise, everything is lost. That idea goes for the rest of us too in our lives.

I actually liked the one-off "what's a Coke?" jokes. Had they gone into it, it would have been too much. Besides, it seemed clear that no one "forgot" anything. Rather, he woke up in a literally different world. His body or mind jumped to another reality. How? Who knows? But people didn't merely "forget," but there were no physical remnants--no albums, no articles, no anything. And that's a different thing than mere "forgetting." Plus, John Lennon is still alive. It's not his Earth. So several things being different makes sense. But that opened up a whole series of different questions. Like is the girl he chases in this reality really the same one who loved him in his own? Is that real "love" and do these two people from literal different realities even know--much less love--each other?
To me, the BIGGEST question they both failed to answer AND was a missed opportunity was how he and the girl met to begin with. In his original world, it was over the song Wonderwall. But in the new world, it's confirmed when he searches for it that the song never existed here. So, how did they meet and why did she fall in love with him? What is the basis of that crush in this world if NOT him singing Wonderwall at the middle school talent show as it was in his own world? And just like no one remembered the Beatles, his pre-blackout life would have been different as this very example proves. How come no one ever gets weirded out when he "misremembers" his own past in this world? But even if you let all that go, I would have liked to see him sing that for her at the end. He admits the Beatles are these other people, whatever, but then, he could have given that song to her and her alone. The ultimate gift in this world. It was mentioned several times and seemed so obviously set up to make a comeback and just didn't. To the point I wondered if it did in previous drafts and then they changed the ending, but forgot to tone down the set-up.

As much as I love the movie Yesterday. So much wasted potential here. Now I love the idea concept of the movie, the type of romcom genre they are going with also the revival of the beatles music in the modern day. Acting and writing was good. The whole movie overall was ok. I'd give it a 7.5/10.
Here are some wasted potential and missed opportunities.
    1. Redudant songs. The Beatles have a lot of songs that were not played like All my loving, We can work it out, Ticket to ride, Get back and etc. But the movie played the songs redudantly. Like "Here comes the sun". Played twice in the middle and end scene.
    2. Some songs were not even properly played but were referenced. Like strawberry fields forever, yellow submarine, a little help from my friends, hello goodbye, Eleanor Rigby, penny lane and etc.
    3. If john is alive and cigarettes are gone. Where is george harrison then?
    4. No proper cameo of Paul mcartney and Ringo starr. The movie would have been better if they showed the 2 alive members of the beatles. And have them on a single scene at least.
    5. The solar flares were not properly explained. Just like ok.
    6. "Get back" I think should have played on the rooftop.
    7. I wished he did a little pose of the walk in abbey road to look epic.
    8. Hard day's night should have been played while he was running away from the fan girls. Would have been hilarious.
    9. Played "Hey jude" music video at the end credits.
    10. Played "In my life" or "Imagine" while going to meet john lennon.
    11. The alternate ending was better setting up for a sequel.
The movie had some flaws but still managed to do just fine. It was still a success in the box office at least.

But just imagine if the four Beatles remembered as well. I would have loved to see them reunited. If two other persons remembered the Beatles, certainly others do to. They could've built "an army" of fans knowing they're the real artists and standing up for them. They could've tried to stop Jack or to persuade everyone else that he's a phony. Etc. The intrigue would've been so much better. I don't even want to see the 4 Beatles, but if he had real opposition (appart from his conscience) the story would've much more compelling.
The "fans" could've been named "the beatlemaniacs" and people could've seen them a little bit like we see the flat-earthers.
Jack could've tried to develop his own talent to keep a grip on his career. I mean, the opportunity was huge. They missed the point completely.
And i guess the John Lennon scene was emotional, but sincerely who in the universe would react the way John did when Jack appeared on his doorstep? In this universe, John is an unknown artist living alone in the middle of nowhere. Of course he would have asked "who the f are you and why did you seek me for advice?!". Everybody would!
Anyway, I was angry at them when I left the cinema. They had so much potentiel, and I felt like they wasted their time and money and mine as well.

For this concept to be done right you would need a writer that really goes into detail with how this new world is structured, (assuming without having seen the movie what happened is they woke up in a different timeline and it's not just that everyone forgot something and then never found any evidence for a massive part of music history happening). All of music history from 62 or a little bit after looks totally different now, not counting the Beatles themselves. Did any of the current tendencies in the early 60's go further and bigger, like say instrumental surf rock/girl groups/soul or some other thing, Did the british invasion have a lesser impact in the US without the Beatles as one of the early bands, did Brian Wilson never make Pet Sounds because he couldn't have heard Rubber Soul and Beach Boys would be nothing more than a surf band with cool harmonies. If The Stones took The Beatles place would the collective pop-musical consciousness be much more blues oriented or how would it have looked if it were instead The Kinks/The Animals/The Who/Bob Dylan or maybe Motown as a label. Would Yoko Ono inevitably have met some other western pop culture guy and influenced him in a way that would influence the world in some kind of way. How different would hard rock/heavy metal/punk etc. have looked without Helter Skelter or Revolution and similarly psychedelic music without tomorrow never knows/A day in the Life/Strawberry fields forever, what about concept albums, recording styles, album covers, George Martin, Indian Raga music, the social change in the world and bigger societal and political impacts etc. There's so much stuff to build an alternative world around that it should really be a kind of sci-fi story to be done right.
