So incredibly tragic. I'm 67 years old and I have a lot of bad days and when I see things like this, I give myself a kick in the butt and realize how lucky I am to have made it this far, bad days and all. Well done Jordan as always.

I went to Marshall University. The ceremony where the fountain is turned off is so sad and touching. I remember when this crash happened, even though I was a child. My parents loaded us up and headed to Huntington right after the crash happened. (I live about 40 minutes away.) The whole community was shocked and in mourning. My late friend Pat was attending MU at the time and was friends with a lot of those players in the crash in addition to the members of the “young” and upcoming Thundering Herd. She loved MU and missed her lost friends until the day she died.
    May they all RIP. 😢

I was born and raised in Huntington, and we all remember where we were when we received the phone call about the crash. We lost our doctor and many of my friend lost both parents that day. It was a tremendous loss for the entire town. I have been living in Charlotte for the past forty years but recently moved back to care for my 90yo mom. I started watching you about a year ago and enjoy your fabulous adventures, it inspired me to start a channel. Thank you! .I wish I had known you were in town. Merry Christmas and many blessings!

This tragedy reminded me of my cousins passing away the same way back in February 15, 1970. She was a member of the Puerto Rico women's national volleyball team called The Pinkies. They were flying back from a game in the Dominican Republic when the plane crashed. No one survived except for the team captain who decided to take another flight. I wasn't born yet but I remembered my aunts home had a large hallway where you saw my cousins picture and all of her trophies & medals. It was a mini museum. So sad what happened to her & her team. To this day, the town where she grew up still has the arena named after her and a statute of her. I've seen both in person. There's a plaque as well but I haven't returned to see it.

Jordan, also buried at the memorial is Nate Ruffin. He was one of the players who was injured and didnt make the trip. He died many years later of cancer, but wanted to be buried with his fallen family.
To answer one of your questions about the children left behind, 70 lost one parent. 18 children lost both parents. 50 years later, and this accident still impacts our community and our school.

Jordan, thank you for your respectful, touching tribute to those who passed in this horrific disaster. I am from Ashland, Kentucky. Only about 10 miles from the Huntington airport. Years ago, I heard an urban legend that for some time after the crash, planes flying from tri-state airport would dip their wings. It was a salute to those killed in the Marshall University crash.

My husband is a pilot. It is sad because most air crashes are caused by pilot error. I have not read the NTSB report on this crash, you can find it at the FAA website. You mentioned the altimeter, if they were landing & in contact with the tower there may have been something else going on with the plane. RIP Thundering Herd, 1970. Thank you JTL for a respectful video & sweet memorial.

Jordan. In 1970 Freshmen weren't eligible to play. That's is mostly who survived. Probably a fee injured players as well. Freshmen weren't even allowed to travel with the team.
About 8 years ago I became friends with a Freshmen on that team. I never talked about the crash. I figured if he wanted to talk about it he would. He never did. Sadly he passed from cancer last year.

I find it fascinating that 6 people were unidentified, you'd think with 75 people it wouldn't have been that difficult to figure out who they were.

n plane crash's jet fuel burns with such intensity, clothing, wallets stuff like that are dust. Rings melt, total burn and nothing left. For me 6 left is outstanding, this was before the science of DNA. The air in the cabin was 100% on fire. The families were notified that there could not be any positive I.D. on the last 6, that is a crusher. but they are next to each other. many of those players were strong Christians, so were their families. My Army buddy whoe brother was not on the plane due to injury are Born Again, The fmilies knew their kids ,spouse, parent were with our Lord and that eased the not being sure a great deal.

I think there’s a misunderstanding. All the people who passed on the plane were named and it is known who died. But there were 6 bodies whom couldn’t be identified as in, which person was which out of the 6 remaining names. That’s why there’s a plaque with all 6 names and 6 blank headstones. They don’t know which person is buried in which spot. But all the families know their loved one was on the plane and passed.

    Jordan the Lion,
Thanks for making this video. I lived in the jock dorm, Hodges Hall, when the plane crashed. The team doctor brought his wife on the plane. Their twin daughters were voice majors at the Music Department. I recommend changing the closing music to the Marshall University Alma Mater.

Hi Jordan! This one broke my heart. I found the movie on tubi channel. Because of you I have been going back looking at these movies about the stories. I just looked at Only the Brave the movie about the Granite Mountain Hotshots and the Yarnell fire in 2013. I hope you go to the memorial in Arizona. Thx for all you do! Love to Jah!!!

I worked for Chessie System Railroad in Huntington from 11/80 until we were transferred to Jacksonville, FL 9/86. Most of that time I was also an adjunct instructor at Marshall and I have been by that memorial many times and it is always a sobering experience. Everytime I was on a plane landing there I wondered. There was wide speculation that the plane crew may have seen the lights of the Ashland (now 76) refinery but the official report tells us the most likely issue.

I should have also said that a friend and his wife had been out to dinner and when they heard about this on the radio they headed toward the site. She was a nurses but when they came to a police check point, she was told that there was no need for medical help, just to pray.
