I once spent few hours comparing analogue pedals with digital copies inside my Boss MS-3. Only difference that I noticed is that MS-3 is more quiet :) The tone and feel was absolutely same level for me. After that I removed all analog pedals from my pedalboard for a while. But later brought some back, because I hate tweaking from menu - you need several steps to change some parameter, while in analog pedal it is just one. But cannot save settings. So, at the end I am using both for ergonomic reasons.

@@0megalul309 Not exactly. I am sure that there are some insufferable souls who do indeed buy pedals for social media "clout" but when it comes to pedals, there is another big reason why they still endure and are still quite popular. Keep in mind that I say this as someone who has both a pretty big pedalboard plugged into a tube amp and is pretty heavily invested into digital via an interface and software.
Let's start with the big benefit of going digital. You get a lot of stuff for a lot less money. Heck. Some of that stuff is even really, really good. For the guitarist that is looking for a broad palette of effects, there isn't a more cost effective way to do it. When I started using Amplitube, I was shocked at just how good some of the effects sound and even how reactive they are to playing dynamics and the guitar's volume/tone knobs. Additionally. It was amazing to have access to so many iconic effects without actually having to buy those effects individually (sometimes for a lot of money). I will admit that I went into the whole software side of things with a lot of skepticism but after spending an afternoon putting together a really, really good LA Sessions style setup with a bunch of pedals and even rack effects, I was sold.
So with the big selection and the generally great sound, what could possibly be the drawback? The first thing that really stands out is ease of control. With a individual pedal, you have a set of fixed, immediately accessible physical controls that can be operated very quickly. Software/digital/modeling based solutions tend to work well with presets in mind where you set everything up a certain way and don't really need to alter it but that can sometimes get in the way when you just need to very, very quickly tweak one knob on a delay pedal or overdrive for a specific part of a song. This isn't exactly a deal-breaker or anything and there are ways to lessen the issue but it is still something I notice when going between my physical and digital setups.
The next issue is something that is much harder to overcome. Digital solutions give you access to a ton of effects at once but even with all those choices, you still end up with less choice when compared to a physical setup (with individual pedals). For example. In my physical setup, I have a couple of different chorus pedals. One is a TC Electronic that I use for more conventional chorus sounds and another is a Mr Black DoubleChorus that I got not so much because I like chorus but because it has a very different overall sound and is useful in different contexts. Along the same lines, I have a East River Drive as one of my overdrive pedals because I wanted a pedal that specifically captured the older, milder Tubescreamer sounds.
In my digital setup, I do have some selections within certain effects types but not with nearly as much granularity. I can't get the Mr Black DoubleChorus sound at all and I also don't really have a lot of choices when it comes to Tubescreamer varieties so I have to settle for a emulation of a more modern, harsher version.
Again. It isn't exactly a dealbreaker or anything but it is something that can't really be solved. Some companies have tried to bring boutique pedal builders in (Amplitube has a Fulltone selection for example) but there is no real way for a software/digital solution to offer the sheer variety that you can get from physical pedals. That will be more important to some more than others but it is still a major factor and one that will keep a lot of guitarists in the individual pedal scene.
There is room in the world for both digital/software solutions and analog pedals and there are contexts where the strengths of each come out in a big way.

Multi-effects setups like these are always a tough sell for me. I like how it sounds but since I already have a spread of pedals, I can't really see adding this thing in without creating pedal order problems. The big issue here is the specific mix of effects. It is great if you will only ever really use this pedal and nothing else but when you start adding in other types of effects, you will realize that this specific arrangement of effects won't easily slot into any given spot on your board.
To be honest, I think TC Electronic got it right with their approach to the multi-effects pedal. They avoided gain based effects entirely and instead focused on a set of "slots" that you can put a wide variety of built-in effects into. This lets you choose a selection and a pedal order that fits into whatever kind of board you are running.

It has an fx loop on it between the drive and chorus so- it's not as limiting as it seems. That said, it feels odd huh? If it were reasonably priced, I might get it to setup a totally different board than the one I have now- so I'd have some options when it comes to pedal boards. I could see setting this up for a classic rock, 70s vibe. But I'm not paying close to 600 or maybe more in US dollars for it. For like 400 bucks you can get an amazing modeler- the Headrush MX5- which has Quad Core processing technology in it- whatever that means. All i know is it sounds every bit as good as a Helix, has a drag and drop interface that's bone head simple, and it has like 30 amps and 60 something fxs in it- with cab sims. Plus looper, tuner, doubles as recording interface, etc. Imo Morely priced themselves out of the market with this one. Two Notes just came out with a nice analogue amp in a box style, multi-fx thing- I think it's around 400 bucks to. Morley done lost they mind.

Ibanez did a few versions of something similar back in the early 80's. I believe the guitar version had compressor, Tube Screamer, chorus, and delay. They made them for both guitar and bass, and I believe they had rackmount versions with a foot controller. Gets tough to remember sometimes. I still see them around in the $200-300 range.

    • @sohosteveuk

      Yeah...
      Said the same thing yesterday.
It was the UE series - I've had several of the variants, both in pedal and rack + controller. And as you say, you can pick them up for 2-300 £ or $.
The pedals were UE 300, 305 for guitar and 303B - for bass!
The racks were UE 400 series
You can get 3 effects for less than the price of 1 of that series of pedals!
Basically the exact same circuits as the AD-80, 800 series Tube Screamer Overdrive (not in the one with 'Distortion' though!).
Each of them had THREE effects switches, master on/off + effect loop
You got to choose 3 effects out of either stereo chorus, analog delay, Tube Screamer(or unpleasant Distortion circuit), Compressor Limiter, Parametric EQ, or on the bass version Auto Filter, Compressor, Chorus/Flanger
      And they sounded sublime!

      No need to wonder!
Just pick yourself up an Ibanez UE 300, 303B or 305 from the 80s at half the price.
If it's survived this long...! 😎

Pete is a hoot! I guess I've turned into one of those DSP guys over the decades after having a lot of analog effects and Morley pedals back in the day. I think that sounds pretty cool. The echo I'm hearing sounds very stereo ping pong. I hear a lot of Rush sounds. But, no offense, my Digitech RP-500 can do everything that does and about 100 more things. Ok, ok, it's digital, but I would challenge a listener to hear the diffence between one and the other. After how many decades, Morley is so late to the multi effects game.

Agree on the pedal, but if on a pedal board then it is actually compensating the angle so back to how a normal wah works on the floor😅

$600+ USD is pretty rich for something like this. I get "all analog", but at the end of the day, I could buy a Valeton GP-200, a NuX Cerberus, a Line 6 Catalyst 100, or a Boss Katana MkII 100 for about half the price of this thing. I've played stuff with bucket brigade circuitry, and I've played stuff that's entirely DSP-based. At the end of the day, I'm voting for most versatility and best bang-for-buck. 🤷‍♂

Wah, OD and Dist pedals are usually nearly always analogue. Add an analogue chorus and delay and you should have change from £500 easily and get a tuner with the change..To me these kind of units lack the digital programmability and a tuner. Something like the old Boss ME5 or the TC Nova system had the best of both worlds...analogue FX where it matters plus a couple of digital modulations and lots of patch memory. Nobody seems to make the right sort of unit - but this Morley effort seems to be just 4 pedals in one box....what's the big deal with that?

For the price, they could have added something to go direct like the Fly Rig from Tech 21. Some preamp flavor and a speaker simulator that you can de-activate. It would still be analog, but with some modern use. For this price I can simply get the pedals separate. Stereo thing requires two amps, so no much sense for a multi fx.
