  • This week I am sharing how I built my extendable pull-out bed in my Toyota Coaster.
    I also share some tricks that I learned to make the bed so much easier and smoother to move.
    Shout out to Big Van Small World ( / bigvansmallworld ) who gave me the idea to use the washers under the sliding slats.

    Brilliant! That business about the slats slowly getting out of square is the sort of thing that just seems to happen whenever anyone but an absolute pro dabbles in carpentry. Glad you noticed the issue before it developed into a real problem. Also appreciate that you showed your mistake, rather than choosing to not reveal it to your viewers. It humanizes the process for others considering tackling such a project, and gives us all permission to make mistakes.

    You're a very skilled and talented woman. It's all coming together nicely now. So satisfying to see the 'living' parts take shape now you've done so much of the hidden structural work. Well done

    You can also WAX the skids that slide under/over other stationary supporting frame. Thank you for your videos.

    Wonderful job! I sure appreciate the explanation of your process. I have seen many builders struggle to pull out their couches, and thought there had to be a better way. And you’ve shown in great detail on how it should be done! Thank you for sharing the specifics. Keep up the great videos. Love watching your build.

    I’ve used silicone spray before on the parts of the timber that slides against other timber and it’s amazingly smooth sliding.

    So good!!! I'm planning something similar for my lounge area, and have saved this video to follow when it comes time to build that section. The detail you go into and the tip you give make your videos SO INFORMATIVE! THANK YOU!

    Just another person vouching for paraffin wax. It makes everything slide quite nicely.

    So, fyi I’m using your build of this bed as part of my design for the Murphy bed. But as I film myself making these damn cabinetry pieces. I have so much bloody respect for you, because I can personally see how awkward this is to film. Because right now, I’m doing the same thing!!!
    Thank you so much for taking the time to record these in such awkward spaces. And also, I love that young pup is now apart of your theme. My Puppa Caesar was my best mate, and in the height of the lockdowns in Melbourne he… got very sick. It made the whole situation much worse. But, in saying all of that, he made my life so much richer in ways I can’t put into words! Dogs are awesome, and more responsible owners should have them!

      So sorry to hear about Caesar. Thanks for your kind words and support about my videos. Yeah, filming my progress is a real challenge at times for sure, and the more things I build into my bus, the more awkward the space becomes! It does take a lot of time and I often think I could have my bus finished by now if I wasn't trying to film it all, but I love having the videos to look back on and I know a lot of people get value from them, so I want to keep doing them.

    Nice job. I've recently found your channel and have been watching your videos. I appreciate how thoroughly you think through and explain what you are doing. For this bed two comments; Firstly I would be inclined to attach some felt or something similar to the underside of the bottom rail of the sliding part so that it doesn't mark your vinyl over time. Secondly, (and I realise that you were probably constrained by your storage containers) but the height of the bed means that you will not be able to sit comfortably with your feet on the floor which may make the day mode less useful i.e. it will be great for laying about but not for sitting.

    • @AGirlADogandABus
      @AGirlADogandABus  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good idea about the felt. I might try that. With regards to the bed height, yeah I probably won't be sitting in it like you would normally sit on a sofa much anyway. I will mostly be sitting at my table during the day or outside I think. It will mostly be for the dog during the day ;)
      I had to make a few compromises in my build (and bed height was one of them) because I am trying to fit a huge amount of gear in the bus that I need for my business as well as the normal house stuff. I will probably end up needing to get a trailer, but for now, I am doing my best to build things to maximise storage in case I do actually have enough weight leftover do carry everything in the bus without a trailer. Down the track if I end up getting a trailer and the bed height is a pain, I can always chop a bit off the bottom and lower it.

    Brilliant! I'm as excited as you that this bed works so nicely, as you've never done this before, and I like the way you research thoroughly before doing the steps to make something. Love how you explain as you construct and that all the "oops" moments are in the videos and the measures you take to correct them. You are a good teacher 😁. BTW, would a mask keep down the dust enough to prevent you having asthma problems? I know Hugo uses one when he has lots of wood to cut, and he's not asthmatic, and I wear one in Spring(gardening) due to my hayfever problems.

    • @AGirlADogandABus
      @AGirlADogandABus  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I have been wearing a mask when cutting a lot of wood at once or when I am sanding. Most of my issues are due to dust allergy, and even just being in a dusty environment is enough to trigger it, not so much actually breathing lots of it in. My biggest challenge is not touching my face with my dusty hands :)

      I've previously suggested this but she wants to use her bus, and live the life she has planned, so they'll just have to view her videos and DIY their bus in their own time!

      Haha I have thought about this and it might be something I do as a side gig on the road, but I have issues with tendonitis, which is getting worse as I progress through my build, so I think once my bus is finished I will want to limit the amount of physical work I do and give my body a well earned rest :)
