  • Always Board Never Boring recently played through HeroQuest Adventure 3, Lair of the Orc Warlord, using his original 1990 copy of HeroQuest. Today, he's playing that same adventure again, only this time he's using his new Hasbro edition of HeroQuest, and playing with all of the North American rules. Some of the dark denizens of the dungeon are about to get a little bit tougher.
    Oh, and as you might expect, this playthrough will spoil the layout and any surprises for the Lair of the Orc Warlord mission. Probably shouldn't watch this video if you intend to tackle this dungeon as a hero at some point.

      Thanks so much. It's a bit of a balancing act with HeroQuest, because I think part of the joy of the game is seeing the dungeon unfold in the pulled back shot I did in my first HeroQuest playthrough, but at the same time you want to make sure you are showing off the action. I'm holding off on more HeroQuest playthroughs for a little while because I am playing through the campaign with some people who watch my channel sometimes, and I don't want them to get advance notice of what the dungeons are like before they see them in a game.

    it's soothing to see this playthrough compared to games with children. Did you give up the treasure search in that final room?
    I wonder what the "idea" for the miniature painting is.... looking forward to it. I just painted my dreadwarriors in a bit of a simplistic way (silver armor and weapon, red cloth, red eyes, a bit of brown for the wooden handle of the weapon)and am finding it difficult to finish the abomination-painting.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The final room doesn’t have any special treasure in it, you just draw a treasure card. It wouldn’t really have added anything to the playthrough to keep searching the treasure deck once Ulag was dead so I just wrapped up the session instead.

    31:57 - As much as I prefer the UK wording of the Courage spell, I've read the arguments that making a continuous effect until there are no monsters in LoS may make it too powerful in comparison to other spells. With a Broadsword + Courage, that would produce the effect of multiple Genie spells.
    Maybe the phrase about LoS was there to prevent pre-combat buffing.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      But both versions of the spell clearly state you can only use it for one attack, which is all it needs to say. There's no need for a reference to LOS, because you get to use it once and that's the end, so it can't be like multiple genie spells. The US wording is a bit silly as it means there have to be monsters visible to the hero when you cast the spell on them. That means you can't even do something like cast the spell on the barbarian who is just around the corner of the corridor from an enemy, because the spell instantly fizzles out.
      Nobody is going to use the courage spell before they know what the next encounter is going to be - you could end up wasting it on a lowly goblin - so you are really only going to cast it when you are about to charge known enemies, and I don't see a problem with that as it only works for a single attack.

    • @carlosbarreto4695
      @carlosbarreto4695 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoringIn the original version of HeroQuest (which as you know well, was released first in UK), as you displayed at 32:32, clearly states that the Courage spell can last several turns, as it states _"...each time he attacks, until the Spell is broken"._
      So this is why some players consider that the UK version was the original spell and that the US version was the nerfed version... Or that it was poorly written.
      I've also found people arguing that in the UK version, the Genie spell would damage _every monster_ in LoS. In both cases, this is how I think these spells should have been written. Since the casters have a single cast of each spell, they should be that awesome.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a bit more complicated than that, actually. The original 1989 UK edition of the card reads "This spell may be cast on any one player. That player may then throw two extra combat dice the next time he attacks. The spell is then discarded." When they released the revised second printing in the UK, it was changed to be a continuous effect until LOS was broken. In the American version the LOS clause was included, but so was the clause for it only working on one attack.
      The genie to the best of my recollection has only ever said "any monster" with the singular "monster" making it clear it isn't a nuclear bomb going off and is supposed to target one enemy.
      (By the way, sorry for the original confusion in my response. It was a long time ago I made this video, and had forgotten that I showed a revised card from the 1990 edition, so we were talking at slightly crossed purposes.)

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I spoke about it a bit in my last plathrough, how the game doesn't provide any incentive to keep pressing forwards in a timely manner. It's a tricky balance, because while some kind of motivation is good, too much can become a bit of a chore. For example, I really like Dungeon Saga, but the tough time limit on that game means it always feels more like a race than a dungeon plunge, and I like how HeroQuest gives you more time to breath, regather your team, and explore.
      I had thought about adding a rule that, if there is ever a Zargon turn where there are no monsters on the board, then Zargon has an opportunity to gather his strength. You get one power token. Once you have accumulated three power tokens, you can draw the top treasure card. If it's treasure you discard it, if it's monster or trap you get to play it immediately and then return it to the deck. Just to represent Zargon's minions getting prepared, setting extra traps, and squirreling away all of the treasure.

    • @johnmiddleton4291
      @johnmiddleton4291 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How else would a party of experienced dungeon crawlers handle doorways and entering a room to clear it? They will always do it the optimal and least risky way unless a player decides to act like a typical player.
      Arbitrary time limits are mostly crap in dungeon crawlers and can easily turn it into a race game where it's optimal to skip searching and looting, as in in Descent 2nd and Gloomhaven.
      The way to time a dungeon crawler is to add resource management into the mix. Exploration takes actual time and requires the expenditure of torches, food, bandages, etc. The more time you spend searching and waiting, the more these expenditures stack up and necessitate a return to town to resupply. It was the exact way this was managed in D&D in 1974 and most boardgames forget all about it. There were also loads of extra gear and spells that were used for searching for traps, checking doors, wedging doors, and general exploration that had no real application in combat. That's were all the ten foot pole, always carry rope, and knock spell rpg memes come from. It's unfortunate that most boardgame dungeon crawler have the most bare bones exploration mechanics and that most boardgamers probably don't really want detailed exploration that slows a game down.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha, you're not wrong. If I ever take up adventuring, you can bet I'm waiting for the big lad with the sword to open every door first. I'm not a big fan of forcing the heroes to go too quickly. Doesn't Gloomhaven treasure blink out of existence if you don't get it in time? One notable exception is the D&D adventure games. I just think it works there, because those games are a bit more like puzzle and resource management games rather than traditional dungeon crawlers. They're supposed to feel chaotic and frenetic.
      On a sort of related note, I think Advanced HeroQuest did a decent job of resource management elements within the confines of a board game, and also had some nice options for making the dungeons feel alive.

    • @johnmiddleton4291
      @johnmiddleton4291 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Yeah, we have discussed that a few times about advanced HQ. I think the resource management is absolutely critical to making a dungeon crawler feel like an actual rpg. Spell memorization also becomes important with casters carefully selecting what they should memorize for the next section.
      I have yet to actually pull the trigger on any of the D&D adventure games, though I did play Ravenloft and Wrath a decade ago. Something else always comes up.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the wording on the spell is a hash. There is no reason not to let the spell stay in effect until the character has made an attack. Spells are already quite weak.

  • @matthewkirkhart2401
    @matthewkirkhart2401 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the wording of the NA spell card for Courage is a bit clunkier, but I interpreted it the same way as the European version of the card. I would guess that it is worded that way because they want to make sure that the hero it is cast on does not get to make an immediate free attack. The hero has to wait until it is their turn again to attack and get the benefit of the spell. Although I can see why you would be inclined to interpret the wording such that it is a one-time effect, I think the “spell is broken by” information later on the card indicates that it is not. So unlike a healing spell, for example, that affects the target immediately by giving the spell’s benefit to the target hero when it is cast, but it is a one time thing, the effects of this spell are only provided to the hero when they act again, but they gain these benefits every turn as long as the hero can see a monster.
    I have fond memories of playing the original version of the game of the barbarian (who usually ends up being the target of the Courage spell) running from room to room, opening doors, hoping to see monsters so as not to lose the effect of this spell.
    I agree, I love the larger sized squares of the new board, but the furniture is now a little too small to fully block the squares it is supposed to, at least some of it like the table, torture rack, etc. the book cases seem okay, but everything else is a bit small. Minor quibble though, still very happy I bought the new version.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think it's supposed to be the same as the European version (which is as I played it in the video), it's just the European version has cleaner (but still not perfect) wording to clarify the intent. It may have been a bit of a templating error, because other cards like potion of strength say "next attack" as well.
