It's great to hear from OG PSO players. I didn't play the game, but it was apparently inspired by Diablo and I truly appreciate the dungeon crawler genre.
I'm wondering though, if you ever played original PSO2? That game was also heavy on cosmetics so they naturally made their way into NGS as well. It's also more action-oriented than PSO1 and relies heavily on 12-man urgent quests, randomized divide quests, and late game 1-on-1 boss battles (Sodam, Masq). NGS has similar things (urgents and trainia bosses) and also has PSE zones with endlessly spawning enemies. They're not bad, but it's true that it can get a little stale.
Hoping that the ultra update provides an appealing gameplay loop and more variety in build paths. Unique gear would be great too since that's what Looter genres are known for!

For me the loss in PSO2 and especially NGS is the move away from the combat complexity being on the enemies rather than the players and the death of 'exploration progress'.
First the exploration progress: In PSO the rare crates drop some pretty nice stuff so it's fun to fully strip mine a level and you have to stop and clear out most rooms before the doors unlock so there's general sense of 'going somewhere' and uncovering/gaining access to the map. In PSO2 they don't lock doors or impede you much so you can run past most enemies and the crates aren't worth much so it's more optimal to make your way to the exit ASAP unless it's one of those levels you're purely in for killing mobs (I don't remember the name of them anymore but they were basically the endgame outside of events until PSO2 episode 5 or something.)
PSO2:NGS drops even having to make your way through the level because now it's all open world and there's fast travel :/
As for combat in PSO2 and NGS then unless it's a boss you're fighting it's ultimately more about your class than what you're trying to kill for the most part. In old PSO if you don't want to get hit by even the basic monsters you'd have to learn the particular behaviors of the enemies to know when to attack, how to attack and when to just move so you don't get thwacked (at least in melee, I feel like guns kind of sidestepped a lot of the more interesting parts of PSO's combat :P )
It was also nice in PSO that you could pick up a weapon, swing it a few times to get used to the timing on it and outside of maybe reading the special attack (if it had one) you were ready to go. I feel like I spent hours reading intricate class guides in PSO2 so I wouldn't have to waste a respec or accidentally gimp myself and mastering a class was more about getting the sequence of about 6 attacks used in the optimal combo into muscle memory than something more dynamic like having to learn new enemy behaviors and properties :/
but that's just my personal take on it all :o

One thing I came to terms with a long time ago is the effect of brand loyalty, simply having the name of a franchise can be enough to keep people investing in a game they wouldn't stick with if it was near identical but under a different name.
I see it a lot in one of my old school friends, he's diehard into PSO2/NGS purely because it's Phantasy Star Online and not for anything specific to the current game. He was the same with Streets of Rage 4, which to me at least feels like a completely different beat 'em up to the classics and seems like it could be a graphic overhaul of something else, my old friend has bought and 100% it and the DLC on *four* different platforms! Just because it's Streets of Rage.
Try to suggest any other beat 'em up to him and he won't give it a chance just because it's a new name and he's locked himself into the franchises of his childhood.
Same with Sonic, he'll buy anything Sega dumps out if it's Sonic, but getting him to even look at games taking inspiration is nigh impossible, any time I've mentioned Freedom Planet or Electric Jester, he's amazingly disinterested. He'd buy a Sonic Boom rerelease before giving any alternatives a try!
Moral of the story, don't go giving a game you wouldn't like undue praise or attention just because of its name and give similar games to what you're wanting to play a fair shot even if it's completely unknown to you.

I feel the same way, I started playing BASE Pso2, and I feel base really should've had another year, rather than the bullet train we had in one.
Relevant even in Base though, phasion was and is endgame, and the AC scratch tickets they keep rolling out, they don't seem as inspired, as they could do so many other themes for phasion, like make actual military or futuristic warfare gear, but instead they keep a cyber punk style, and keep throwing in more hoodies almost every AC scratch. Not to mention, CASTS players are still not getting a lot of cosmetic options either, you either look like a Gundam, or some humanoid animal, there's hardly variation that I've seen( I'm on Ship 1).
I still play it, but I'm more there out of loyalty to my alliance and the friends I've made, otherwise I would've left NGS behind soon after the Retem update(Late 2021)

How to begin...I wouldn't say that "fashion is endgame" for NGS. While it is a focus for many people I would say that Classic to some extent as well the "end game" is it's social aspects. Creating a look and sharing it with people is definitely one facet of that. But so was making your room/alliance and dressing up your mag. Heck if you played PSU at all fashion and hang out spots were things people cared about there as well.
I think the reason NGS feels "hollow" at least for those used to Classic is because the gearing process was heavily simplified. Up slotting is easy to do and does not need fodder gear. You don't really have elaborate augment crafting like Guardian soul. (Yes Halphinale exists but it's not anywhere close to the headache GS was.) We also don't have craftable PA's/techs or time limited effects to put on gear.
"Rare drop" chasing did exist in Classic for a bit but was eventually taken over by just crafting. NGS also fairly had rare drops initially. Not PSO levels of rare but still. Reliks were that rare drop. ESPECIALLY if you got a decent fixa on it. It wasn't received very well and I don't think it would make NGS better to simply go back to ultra rare drops. The gearing process will just need to get more elaborate over time as well as class trees. It's worth noting that the Ultra Evolution update isn't just creative space. It's merely what they chose to show us. The director even said a long requested combat type mode will be returning with it.
Housing stuff will also not have to be bought. Specifically the only house stuff that is meant to be scratchable is collab themed decorations. Access to the creative tool as well as the decorations will not be locked behind spending cash. On a more personal note I want to say that I think people focus far too much on "end game" for anything that has an online service to it. I think the experience of the game matters much if not more so. Despite it's flaws I'm actually kind of happy NGS doesn't have a true "end game" because it would probably end up feeling more Generic than NGS already feels like.
The focus is on NGS's combat which definitely has it's depth if you put in the time to dig around in it and the discord communities.

I like the combat, the open world, multiclassing, subclasses, and how its crossplatform and cross save. I like it a little better than PSO but not by much the main thing for me being the open space as opposed to linear areas on PSO. Controls are also much better on PSO2 NG and I do like the story cutscenes. I do see the appeal of the original PSO as well tho. I did a run with a full party earlier today and fought a dragon which was pretty fun.

    • @raventhorX
      @raventhorX ปีที่แล้ว

When it comes to NGS I feel it did rather well when it comes to its combat for the most part. Force type classes however still miss the mark slightly but still are fun to play. multiclassing and subclassing are basically the same thing though unless you meant multi weapon? either way both of those systems to me fall somewhat flat in NGS and I didn't like how they were implemented in base either. With base I didn't like how the different classes gave different stats as a sub class which created a situation of requiring a meta in certain cases, even more so when certain classes got abilities that people used for traversal. In NGS they attempted to resolve this so while I may not be fond of the NGS system i still prefer it over base. All the NGS system seems to do is let you use weapons that don't belong to your main class with a 10% potency penalty last I checked. Sure people could experiment with weapons to figure out which ones work well together when making combos and whatnot, but that makes things more complicated than they need be and risks another meta situation imo. all the multiweapon feature does for me is make it so i basically use less weapons on my palette if I don't already use all the PAs on a given weapon by giving me the choice to permanently fuse said weapons and choose what PAs I want from the two. you still get that 10% penalty though.

I have spent nearly $4000 on pso2 since sep 2020, I have lived with 2 people I met on this game (ex boyfriend and current girlfriend) and it has given me everything of the life I have today. Being able to express myself and present myself in the way that resonates with me is very special, and no game comes close to what pso2 allows people to create. Allows people to be. I have made so many friends, it is really the friends that I hunt more than any rares. To be fair I suppose I don't play very much most of the time and I am mostly social and fashion focused, but that has been more for me than any repetitive runs through pso1 or psu ever were. My life dream after having a romance on Dreamcast PSO1 when i was 13, became to someday meet someone on a game and make it to living with them. PSO2 (pre-ngs) brought me to that dream, twice, in less than a year. Nothing is like it, nothing lets so much of a person come through a game as pso2 does. NGS has been a mixed bag for sure, but I have big hopes for it's future, and I'm sure sega is capable of delivering for us. People who just want a satisfying grind will not be happy with NGS in it's current state, it is the people that have stayed on the game and made it a big part of their life that benefit the most from everything Sega does - and I am exremely impressed with what Creative Space will allow us to do. If I had played ff14 in 2020 instead of pso2 global i would literally not be alive today, i would not have met my sweet ex boyfriend that saved my life after my mom died from a stroke (i am disabled); i would not have met my wonderful girlfriend that i live with now, and i would not have made so many beauiful memories on pso2 as well as many fond ones on NGS; my whole social being has been entwined with PSO since i was 13 in middle school, i am 36 now
sorry to ramble, thanks for hearing some tiny bit of my story
Bless Phantasy Star Online and all of it's derivatves, and bless all the players I have been so fortunate to meet and befriend over a lifetime on these special games )*

while you hit the nail on the head on what the hook for the gameplay is in my opinion I'm somewhat conflicted on if I want it to succeed or not. While I want it to succeed because I am a long time fan of the series and I would like to see more content, the issue is that they are not coming out with the content I want that will hook me into the game and if the game succeeds due to cosmetics I believe the next iteration of the series will focus even more on that making it less likely I will see the content I want to see. It makes it difficult to want to see it succeed because of this because if it does, then I won't see the game I want, but if it doesn't I still won't see the game I want.

OG PSO2's hook was very similar to PSO. I'm not sure if it was the same past Ep4 as that's when I stopped playing (and I believe also when they introduced easier methods to acquire some high-rarity weapons, though they weren't the best you could get), but up to Ep3 it was all about loot. I even remember my insane loot hunts in Ep2, a TMG I didn't find until they increased drop rates in Ep3, I think.
I'm giving NGS a fair shot and I'm finding it entertaining at places, but I have to forget for a moment that this is a PSO game. Even compared to OG PSO2, it's so far removed from what made that game special. For instance, it makes absolutely no sense to get skill points from BOTW-style trials. Leveling up increases you battle power, which is such a weird addition, but doesn't give any skill points. Not that OG PSO even had skill points in that sense, but coming from PSO2, this is the weirdest part of NGS.
I think OG PSO2 still rules. I'm also playing that again, having a massive nostalgia trip from my PSO2 JP days, and it's been a blast.

I noticed a huge change in focus from the beginning of pso2 to the "end" of it's life. (I know you can still play base). The beginning had a stronger focus on weapons, gear, rare enemies, and not so much on fashion and ac scratch. I remember when 10*'s were first released and how extremely rare they were or when Chrome dragon was first released, and he worked like a virus for PC players. Even though that mechanic was short lived it felt exciting when you encountered it. Near the end everything was just handed to the players, gear wasn't special as every class got a version of a new weapon. It's only gotten worse for NGS. I would play PSO1 but I am still trying to figure out how it works I am so confused when I watch gameplay.

Well, if you don't already know people play on private servers and often I hear two server names get dropped often. Ephinea and Ultima. I personally feel Ephinea is over all better but you can choose whichever one you want. their respective websites and wikis will also have guides for how to set the game up as well. These day's they've made it almost seemless and it prolly feels as legit as downloading the original game when official servers were still running.

  • @nitropenguinz
    @nitropenguinz ปีที่แล้ว +2

For context, I play ngs regularly but also adore the older entries and still play them. The multiweapon system is very fun for gameplay but the consequences of it turn the loot system into a complete joke. Every time new content drops its one series of weapon that all have the same stats and effects. The result is that most gear can look pretty cool, and some of the passive's can alter your gameplay a little, but that's about it. Maybe they're waiting til the game is more full of content to have a more fleshed out rpg experience that NGS is sorely missing but it seems unlikely. It feels like we're just never going to get interesting weapons and armor ever again which is pretty rough. PSO did things so right, so it's very frustrating that SEGA refuses to learn any lessons from one of the most innovative and fun rpg's in history. I wonder if the relative commercial failure of PSU had any say in the direction for the series, much to think about.

Speed running is a thing in NGS. That's really the only alternative to the fashion since the gameplay loop in ngs is pretty terrible. The problem is that gearing up for speed runs is incredibly expensive, or luck dependent. PSO1 has the advantage of making it easy to get gear to play the endgame where the crazy farms begin, but NGS has the downside of every new update being a crazy endgame farm if you wanna do the only really engaging gameplay related thing.
I think the fact that NGS is live service kinda makes this problem bigger, since you go from crazy grind to grazy grind to crazy grind each update despite us being far from the endgame, instead of having a chill beginning and middle like PSO1 did. If you don't do the crazy grind and don't speed run there's really nothing you can't accomplish in a day or two, even on big updates.

NGS really has a lack of direction right now, they clearly are still talented at making instanced content with the dark falz urgents, but theres just no real hook right now unless you like cosmetics as you say. even as someone who suck hundreds of hours into PSO2 grinding out super rare weapons that are fused from other weapons and having great memories, its hard to stay playing NGS, still will go back for every update but until they can figure out what they are actually doing with this open world shit or drop it completely and go back to a lobby style, i wont be on alot.

the main issue is the fact that all gear, ALL gear, is solely +damage. that's it. there's nothing to ever think about, because every weapon is either damage or crit. PSO2 had that exact same issue in episode 4 onwards, and instead of using NGS as an opportunity to clean it up and make actual real rares again like episode 1-3, they tripled down on making gear just all +damage, and all potentials being +damage. Love the rare loot and grinds for super rare items, yes they gave out some rare things years ago in pso2, but these freebies aren’t available anymore and there’s still SO much insanely rare loot to go for.
Just finished a 800hr grind for a single augment for a single piece of gear for my class, and have helped others do 300-500 farms for their gear too.
The combat, the grind, the builds, the build diversity, all of it is truely amazing on pso2.
NGS feels like they’ve tried removing both “Phantasy” and “Star” from the Phantasy Star series, in comparison.
I can’t tell if the devs of NGS have just literally never played any previous games of the series before, or if they have been intentionally trying to 180 the series, but either way it feels like it’s not even the same game, apart of the same series, or even made for the same playerbase. To me, at least.

While I love base PSO2 and I am yet to try PSO1, I dislike the direction NGS and its community wants to go with the game... People want the game to be a photoshoot cosplay simulator, when it originally wasnt and I kinda hate weebs for that one. They dont wanna see new planets, more challenges and combat sectors/exploration and unique gear and instead fashionistas want the gear be served on a silver platter. I liked how Kvaris KINDA went into that direction, because one of the weapons was actually rare the other one you'd have to work for, but now Neos weapons are literally on market and each event gives a good enough weapon for free. Even the community manager of the game Gwiz, claims to have been a fan of phantasy star games for 20 years, yet he calls people who care about the CORE ASPECT of the game, "combat bros". If they wanna ruin NGS, I'd wish they would at least bring PSO1 and 2 separately with minimal support.

There is also the perspective of earning rare loots like augments and powerful weapons through grind. The NGS equivalent is Fixas on weapon drops and color variant (though I don't care about the latter since I always use a camo).
I got that similar "HOLY SHIT" moment when I got a Neos Spear Fixa 5 Attack, the weapon itself being only lootable through a 15-25 minute long quest (depending on how the party fares), cannot be bought from another player, and having low drop rates by itself, it being Fixa 5 and color variant was like hitting the jackpot (though I transplanted only the Fixa on my already existing Spear).
The problem here is that in PSO1, content was released final. In PSO2 & NGS, these rare drops will lose value the moment better weapons will be released.
The bulk of the grind in NGS for me beyond the weapon looting is earning as much meseta and augments as possible for future proofing, especially now with the Arms Refiner II, as well as earning titles. With SEGA's approach to crafting, you never know which augment will eventually turn profitable. Fashion has little to do with it, even if I enjoy that part well enough too.

I remember spending hours trying to get the Form Wand to drop with no luck. Only to find out that there was going to be another weapon added later that was the same....just stronger. It kinda took some of my motivation for farming away.

The truth? I FUCKING HATE NGS. It is NOT a true PSO in so many ways. Everything, from UI, to design elements, right down to the storyline (which is just a rehash of PS III and PS IV), is very much just another GhostBusters 2016 "mail in the storyplay" element, with a Barbie Dollhouse.

Psobb has so much replay value. Pso2ngs has no replay value. The play value of pso2ngs is also slack so replay is just not happening. If class customization was not locked it would be a little better... pso2 is a lost cause

PSO2 NGS is about phasion for some players, but for many its about everything else and thats just a side thing.
It DOES have rares and farming, very much so. Its all about the Fixa rare drops and these can be very high value. As well as rare/expensive augments.
You can very much have rare gear to show off.

After watching the video all the way through it became more and more apparent how disgusted you are with the fashion aspect of the game like I pre previously commented PSL classic a big part of the game was making a super unique looking character unique as you could at the time you want to play a game to keep telling stuff did not get the job you're looking for Phantasy Star and GS is your game go find yourself a Tisha weapon play every hour for the next 3 months and you probably won't get one what was the end game of classic Phantasy Star Online Joe dark balls over and over kill a thousand Hilda Blues to you guide a freeze ray I played plenty of classic PSO and is my favorite game of all time and yes represented well but I love the fact that my character in engine gasket have big boobs and cool hair and cool outfits while I I'm forming away do quests to make money to buy better gear and better haircuts so I can look cooler while farming dual quest to make more money to buy better gear in fashion so I can eat more easily form duel Quest

You’re high, the combat in New Genesis is just boring to me. I don’t know why but it just didn’t mesh with me or my brothers. I love PSO PSO2 and Phantasy Star Universe especially oh god. Pso2ng to me is the lowest point in the franchise sad to see this game die player counts are struggling at a all time low. Sega needs to be punished they need to realize people don’t want this, stop saying you want people to keep spending money that is dumb.
Look at destiny as an example. If they keep racking in cash then why fuck with it. If there don’t see what there doing isn’t working or isn’t making them money then they won’t change you will never have PSO Classic again no one will. PSO2 was fun but it slowly deviated from what was good about the originals. Somewhere along the way it lost its soul. NG is just a lifeless bland open world something or another. It doesn’t have half the spirit of PSO or PSO2 not to mention the style and scope of something like Phantasy Star Universe. God I miss Phantasy Star Universe. Thank god for clementine.
