Hi Lisa. Can’t imagine why I haven’t found you before this, but once I did I’ve been binge watching your videos and thoroughly enjoy them and you. I’m a wheel spinner and never thought I’d want to learn spindle spinning until i watched you support spinning in an earlier video. It lit a spark, THEN I watched this beautifully put together video and I’m ready to give it a try. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughtful and informative videos. Wonderful video, Lisa. I only have a CD homemade spindle. And an old Louet top whorl. haha I found it and well, I am rusty. It also seems the Greensleeves, beginner spindles are sold out. So I will wait as I like the price point and the size. You covered everything so well and I just enjoyed. I was at a guild meeting yesterday and was inspired by the top whorl spinners. Learned a long time ago by Priscilla Gibson-Roberts article that came with the top whorl she designed. It was heavy but well made and balanced. She eventually made a smaller version. This may have been in the 90's. But you have inspired me with your calming video.

I also tried spindle spinning years ago, but moved up to the spinning wheel. I did get a nicer spindle later, but have no idea about how many ounces it is. Many years (and a stroke) later, I am going to try again. Her video is helping inform me what spindle to get next, as I hope I might learn how to ply. I think a key word is "practice," which I don't think I did enough of before I set it aside.

Re plying - I use two medium or large food bags, the kind with tie handles, pop one spindle in each bag and put the bags on my wrist (or on two door handles, one on each side of the door, leaving the door ajar, and stand between the bags. Occasionally I put a little weight in the bags too, especially if I’ve wound the singles on to cardboard cores instead of using two different spindles to spin the singles. Then I ply, thus avoiding making the plying ball (I’m lazy 😊). I do find your methods interesting, and I love your style of presentation.
Currently I’m working my way through a 2022 clip from a ram called Roy. He’s a Cheviot (being Scottish I pronounce it Chee-viot)

Great video. Wish it was around when I learned. My only addition is what I tell new spinners I teach, about the beginning fumbling. I ask them to commit to 15 min. A day for one month. No longer. This helps with the frustration factor. My observation is that about days 12-15, the "click" happens. As you said, suddenly you are riding the bike! And often the day before is the worst day and they are so ready to quit. So I just encourage folks to do that very little bit a few days more! It is great to teach others. You have that gift. It is apparent in all your videos!

Thank you, I was fascinated to see all your drop spindles. I have been learning to spin on a spinning wheel but just recently took the notion to buy a drop spindle, that was only a few days ago I received my drop spindle, so Ive been using it a few days. I am really enjoying using it and your video has helped. So far I am only doing the park and draft method. When I created my rolags, unfortunately I did not do them that well so they have a tendency to get a little stuck so it is not so easy or smooth to draft sometimes. But the more I practice the more confident I am getting. It's funny to say but, I am finding that I am creating thinner and more consistent yarn on my drop spindle compared to my efforts on my wheel. I may have to buy more drop spindles to be able to spin for plying and no doubt my grand daughter will want to have a go ;) lol T x

I used a drop spindle once, a good several years ago as a teen, in a 4-h meeting. I produced a very small amount of remarkably un-slubby-for-a-first-try, but definitely uneven spun length, perhaps about thirty feet tops, that evening. I haven't touched spinning since, but I kept that sample for years and looked at it wistfully from time to time.
Well, I'm an adult now and I have my own money, so I just bought a few spindles and a bunch of pretty wool roving and I'm gonna make some terrible yarn(and perhaps, in time, some decent yarn)! And this video reminded me of the steps of the process, so I'm not even going to have to fumble around trying to figure out what to do in what order! How wonderful!

Hi Lisa, your videos popped up on my feed yesterday (21st November) . The music on your videos is so calming. I've been binge watching your podcasts.
I'm having a Drop Spindle for Christmas. I've got some Roving that I've been using for weaving on my
Lap Loom but have some like the one you showed with Sparkle in it and wasn't sure whether to weave with it or not. I decided I would like to try Drop Spinning.
So these videos are So Welcome.
    Love your Collection of Spindles.
    Hope you keep safe.

Hi Lisa, hope you're well. Ive been trying to find this video/podcast , for the last couple of days. I got the
"Respect the Spindle" book fir Christmas along with 2 Drop Spindles Kits, along with some extra fibres, but practising with fibres I already have.
This video/podcast is so helpful, in so many different ways, because you've put so much more info on here.
Back to practising, by watching this video side by side with the book.
Thanks for all the joy you put into your Spindling, & the smoothness & calmness of your voice & the music.
      Take care, stay safe &
Happy Spinning & all the other things you do.
      Lots of love Jen xx

Dear Lisa, you are the sweetest. i'm so glad I found you and will check out more spinning videos as i've just begun to spin after having been a knitter and dyer for years. I have both spindles, top and bottom...I've worked so far on the bottom spindle so I'll be excited to see how to do the top whorl. Thanks also for the time stamps. Most kind of you. I gasped when I saw your spindle collection. I think I could be colleting some too so at least hearing about the different ones has helped me with my future collection. You just covered so much, I was delighted. You said you had a lot of fun, well so did I, thank you so much. Lu in Australia

Thanks for the video. Just found you. I've been researching spindles lately, and your video helped me make the decision to give it a go. Bought my first spindle and fiber online today. I will most definitely be referring back to your video when it gets here to help me get started.

How exciting, getting your first spindle and fiber. There are a ton of videos here in TH-cam about drop spindling in addition to mine. Let me know how you get in with it!

Thanks 🙏🏻 2022 now, I used to spin about six years ago. At that time there really wasn’t a lot of information on it. I struggle to spin. I ended up getting a spinning wheel. And learned on that. Now that there’s so much more information on drop spindles I’d like to try it again. So I could travel with it. And take to knitting night. I was always confused with the different weights and meaning. You have sparked and renewed my interest again! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Awesome video - thank you so much. I had to try it! So I got a drop spindle and a support spindle from Ian at the Wood Emporium - they are gorgeous.
Yesterday I started with the drop spindle. My fiber is from a lokal farm. It is not so easy to spin a thin yarn, but I am getting the hang of it and it is so much fun.
Thanks again for this wonderful tutorial. You are such an awesome teacher ❤

Such a soothing beautiful video. I am only dreaming of spinning at this point and on the fence with what I want to invest in but after many years of knitting have come to realize I just can’t get the fibre I want to work with unless I learn to spin it myself.
Thank you so much for your work in putting these videos together. How did we survive in the “old days” when we had to teach ourselves if we didn’t have a teacher nearby?

I knew as soon as I heard you speak that you were from the Midwest. I was born in Rockford and spent half my childhood in Dixon, Il. Life has taken me to England though. Thank you for this video!! I found it very informative. Last year, one of my best friends gifted me a bunch of wool from sheep she breeds and raises. She gave me some gorgeous Blue-Faced Leicester and a spinel that she made because she knows how much I love to knit. I figured it was about time I learn but have been putting it off out of fear. I love the way you broke your video up into sections for us because that will come in handy when I go back and want to view a particular technique. It's so hard to know what videos to start with when there are so many out there, and I feel blessed that I found yours because you showed your viewers different techniques to use, and honestly, some may be easier than others for different people if that makes sense. Do you have a video on preparing the yarn? I know from another short video that you put the yarn on a niddy noddy then put it in hot water. Can you put a wooden niddy noddy in water though? Does the book you recommended go into all of that? Once again, thank you so much for this?

Thank you so much for creating a comprehensive resource. I have very recently become interested in learning how to spin, as our new neighbors have a flock of sheep (raised only for milk and meat, which is typical here in central Spain) and they actually throw away their yarn after shearing. They have offered me fleeces when they shear this coming May, so I am interested trying my hand at spinning on a spindle before investing in a wheel. Many, many thanks for this excellent video!

Very informative! Thank you! I’m having a serious case of fleece envy though seeing all that beautiful fleece you purchased. I like spinning the three ply too but don’t always have the patience for it. It’s a much nicer yarn to knit with though.

I love the spinde discussion. Your collection is just beautiful and your tips very helpful - thanks indeed for the tour. I tend to spin on spindles, love Turkish the best. But if I spin on my drop spindles, I prefer to ply on my spinning wheel. I also enjoy support spindles. What is great about spindles is their portability and being able to take advantage of small slices of time to get some spinning in. Plus, using a spindle is just so tactile. Very relaxing.

I like the portability of spindles too. It’s amazing how much yarn you can spin in the in between odd moments of the day. I too like to ply in a wheel for sure. Turkish spindles are the ultimate In portability as they come apart and easily stored in small spaces. Thanks for watching and happy summer spinning to you. 💕

Thank you so much for this video, Lisa. I have just rewatched it after spinning my first couple of small supported spinning hanks and I'm now trying my new drop spindle. I love your selection of spindles, fleeces and book too!

Just been watching this video/podcast tour of your Spindles & the Spinning. I've got close to a dozen Spindles now. Got 2 last week & got my eyes on another couple.
Your explanation on the different ways to draw the fibres has been a great help especially when things don't go quite as i would like them too.. I'm having fun in the process though.
      Happy Spinning, Knitting & Weaving.

Using a drop spindle was my first introduction to spinning, but I never got past the park and draft stage before I got my spinning wheel. My spindle’s been sitting on my desk for ages without use and this video inspired me to pick it up, and I am having a ridiculous amount of fun using it!! I’m spinning some Icelandic roving that I’m honestly not a huge fan of, but it’s lofty enough that I can easily spin it while standing. I’m going to order a better spindle right now-I might try a Turkish one, too. Those look really fun. Thank you so much for making this video!!
