Huge agree. I have a couple of big leather backpacks now (Fossil, Rebecca Minkoff, one okay one from Portland Leather- nothing super nice). They look professional/adult enough while letting me actually carry stuff around without hurting my shoulders or back.
The clinicians in my office always come in with a backpack. They carry supplies for patients all the time, so they need the extra support on their backs.
I support this message 💯 ❤ backpacks are made for easy living. And I can enjoy looking cute with my tiny purse when I am not working, back pain free yay
Agree, but this also depends on how you get to work. I currently use a shoulder bag because I drive to work 95% of the time. I'm moving close to a train station next month, so then I will go by train more often and probably change to a backpack because of the walk from the train station to my workplace.
I got "bullied" in middle school for having a rolling backpack, because it was for kids. So I got a backpack like everyone, and seriously kids of that age should use a rolling school bag because our backpacks were killing our backs and we only did it because of the pressure of not looking like a kid. It's so messed up. It feels like the adult version of that.
Rolling backpack has actually been banned in my home town because they are found to be worse than normal backpacks for kids. They rolling parts make the whole backpack heavier which is worse for your back, people got sick of changing between backpack and rolling mode so they just use it as a normal backpack anyways, it’s a huge tripping hazard in school, you can’t use it in places with lots of stairs (and schools in my home town have lots of stairs), they are bulky and dangerous on school buses and public transport, and children strain their arms and wrist because they flip over so easily while you are pulling them behind you. What school should do is let kids use ebooks instead of heavy physical text books and provide them with a locker. That’s how you actually save their backs.
@@WeiYinChan I agree with the last part. Though, from my memory the only problem rolling bags have is the noise they are making. Every kid at my school had rolling bags and it was absolutely never an issue, especially not for the weight. But we didn't have stairs so I can't say, for sure stairs would bring complications, or maybe they should just install ramps on the stairs for the bags. With nowadays rolling bags/suitcase, the noise problem could be resolved and kids wouldn't have to make it roll behind them but simply next to them thanks to the new wheels we commonly have now.
@@Raphael-2 do you have a super big school without a lot of kids? Even without stairs it was a problem for us on the streets and in the hallways because it’s a tripping hazard with bags being pulled behind kids. But it would work better in schools with a huge school ground without crowded hallways The ramp would actually be a bad idea because then the kids would be pulling their entire backpack up with one arm instead of 2 shoulders.
I loved carrying a backpack, in school I loved just being able to carry my stuff and have my hands free. I had scoliosis as a kid(it got close but never needed surgery as it corrected it self out). I also hate purses as I’ve also grown up more as a tomboy and never needed to carry more then my keys, wallet, and phone. If anything else put it in the backpack. I will forever use a backpack for school or work it gives you way more space for essentials and keeps your hands free!
yesss! and i see women during my commute to work having two bags in each shoulder (work bag + lunch bag/file bag) and i just feel sad seeing them struggle. it sucks that some would choose to carry two bags than just one backpack cuz it would not fit with their office attire. you're not going to be needing to carry your bag around the office anyway so please just use a backpack like me😂
My scoliosis and chronic pain got as bad as they are because of social pressures (the worst damage was caused by heavy school backpacks as a small child)! A lifetime of pain is absolutely not worth it.
I had scoliosis that wasn't caught until I was an adult and had an MRI for something else. Now you've made me wonder if it didn't fly under the radar--maybe I developed it around high school from all those dang books. And I didn't know a thing about safe lifting or how to properly fit a backpack (too low and it'll mess your back up, etc). I had to cart multiple textbooks across the whole campus in high school and college (though I got a few digitally in college, that was nice). I've never had to carry a load so heavy or so far in the "real world," so why are we making kids do this while their spines are still growing?
@brianna1713 very similar experience to my own. I was not diagnosed until i was an adult. I was checked almost every year by my primary care physician. (Not very well, i guess!) Saw a new doctor as an adult, and she turns to me and goes, "So when were you diagnosed with scoliosis?" Right now, i guess.
I had to buy a rolling backpack to go to school bc wearing a over the shoulder on made my skeletal issues so much worse. It's definitely worth it to not be in intense pain every day. You got to find what works for you
Bless you for stating the truth! I have a bad back and was one of those women who carried a shoulder bag and a separate bag for my lunch, books. Toiletries etc. I suffered for years with shoulder pain (at times, unable to move my neck, shoulders and right arm). I was once ridiculed by a colleague when I changed to a rucksack - she said it looked like I had a college bag. I have been in a new job since last year and commute on the train. I have to carry my laptop, lunch and all my belongings around and I carry them in a rucksack very similar to the one you have shown. I no longer care what others think. One thing I have noticed however is that many womens rucksacks are still more fashionable than they are practical in that there isn't sufficient padding to support the shoulders/ weight of the contents or there isn't enough room to hold lunch and personal belongings. We practical women do eat and carry additional items and we certainly don't all buy our lunch outside every day!
For a while we had a time when cross body messanger bags were popular. There were some really good options and they made them look good and in good sizes. Stays on your shoulder and you can switch them around comfortably, and manuever them around comfortably, big comfy strap on for your shoulder too. I switched to backpacks since i cant find bigger ones that are good and good looking anymore. But i still miss the sheer convenience of manuveriung them around and being able to take things out without the whole circus of using one hand to hold your bag and the other to actually do what you need to.
@@chjuduong yes! It was such a strangely short period of a few years in early 2010s. I've been complaining I didn't buy a bunch of them back then 😂 I had one I carried daily for about 8 years until the poor thing really couldn't take it anymore.
Absolutely agree. Plus, if you buy a bag that is going to hold a lot of items (not laptop), even if you're not going to be carrying it around all day, choose a WIDE shoulder strap to distribute the weight more evenly. The thin ones cut into the shoulders and really hurt
Would it be possible for you to do a backpack review for work purposes? Finding a quality yet fashionable bag that won’t break the bank continues to be a tough feat. Ps - Thanks for all your videos! I’ve learned so much!
😂 I use an Anello backpack from Japan for my work laptop too. But last week at a conference, I felt like I would seem more mature if I purchased a work bag. Thanks for the video.
💯!! This year my husband and I both switched back to backpacks, and haven't looked back 😂. They are SO very versatile and definitely help prevent imbalanced shoulder pain. 🎉 I got a super stylish black one with gold accents on Amazon, and love how classic it looks and feels.
I *love* the convertible bag trend that happened a year or so ago. I can look multiple ways at any time of the day. Some times I crave the ease of a shoulder bag, but sometimes I need to get up and go.
Now this is the sign I've been waiting for!! Been using a knapsack ever since and I've been thinking of switching to a should bag to look more "professional". WON'T BE SWITCHING ANYTHING ANYTIME SOON!
Sis is speaking the truth. Unless you’re only carrying your lunch, X on the shoulder bags. Just bought a backpack and it’s saving my shoulders from my laptop
Same opinion with diaper bags!! When I had my first kid, it was so hard to find a diaper backpack. And as someone that’s had two shoulder surgeries in my 20s, I need a backpack to reduce pain
I retired my tote for the same reason. I went and bought a backpack after like two days. There is no lugging around my work laptop with a tote bag. Others do it, but not me. I like my back and shoulders to be pain free.
Yess! Backpacks are the best. Except if you commute with a car and your working place are only a few steps away from office to parking lot, its ok to get work bag.
I got my work bag last year from te Koop too and it’s an annello too! I love the shape, holds my laptop, thin notebooks and lunch. I can carry a hydroflask on one side and a mini coffee thermos on the other!
I agree so hard. I tried carrying around a purse with all my stuff a few times, and I thought I was the only one who felt the pain (all the women around me wear purses regularly). I invested in a mini backpack instead.
I got a classy nappy bag after using messenger bags for years. Shoulders couldn’t cope. Napoy bags have built in cooler pockets and so MANY pockets-it’s great
Lol I use a big jansport backpack that I got from target-three pockets up front, two main pockets, and a laptop packet with a bottle holder in the side
Sounds like my backpack for uni. Here everyone wears bags meanwhile I'm stuck looking like a turtle, but hey at least I won't have shoulder pain (I actually will, but that's because I sit like a shrimp at any given moment)
Yes, work bags caused pain in my left shoulder that I had to work on for years to get back in shape with PT assistance. Always go for ergonomic when it comes to everyday weight lifting of everyday things, your knees, ankles and back will thank you for it at 40. Price point doesn’t matter, just as long as it works and isn’t causing you issues. No one cares if it looks expensive or is nice in office unless you basically work for high end fashion as long as it’s not “loud”
lol when I started my legal training they gave us a backpack and were were only allowed to bring that to work so there was no ‘ I’m gonna look cool at work’ 😂😂
I sometimes leave a smaller bag at my office so I can leave my laptop at work and go home with the smaller bag bc of how bad I dreaded carrying my laptop, books ect. It’s so draining. Looking at these comments tho…I might just switch to backpacks now before it’s too late.
I actually prefer one handed bags and tote bags to backpacks for this reason! Whenever I use a backpack my left shoulder gets really sore. My right arm and shoulder are so much stronger than my left that it really helps me to let it handle all the weight. Maybe it's because I played tennis but really my back has never felt better!
I live in Europe and I’ve literally never heard of anyone giving a shit about someone carrying a backpack. Like obviously some look nicer than others - some folks will drop a ton of money on designer leather backpacks, others are fine with DaKine or Hershel or Jansport. But no one cares where I live. I think this might be unique to American classism.
That’s not true at all. I had two customers from Europe, and they said it was the worst when it came to people being judgemental 😂 no one place is ever going to be fully immune to judgemental people, that’s how the world works, they’re everywhere
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼As I luxury bag lover I always thought I’d carry a handbag. The shoulder pain is reallllll!!! After 10 years of working I’ve finally moved to a backpack and never been happier 💛 plus it preserves your bags when you’re not running around commuting and working everyday with them!!
Sooo true. I had friends in college and grad school use work purses and every time, within a few months, they'd return to using backpack style bags due to shoulder and back pain. Same thing with heels. Folks would start a new semester or work experience in cute "work heels" and QUICKLY switch to flats or loafers.
Agreed on the work heels. Basically unless I'm going to a formal business meeting/conference I never wear work heels anymore. I wore black ankle boots all winter and those are good enough for the typical work day, otherwise I even wore sneakers esp during the commute. It's lucky my office allows for casual wear depending on what you're doing (if you don't have any formal meetings it's fine to wear a t-shirt and jeans)
True. I'm a doctor and my colleagues (most) and I use backpacks. If you want a more grown up looking backpack, there are brands like Tumi, Montblanc, etc.
Yeah I’m not wearing a backpack onto SF public transport, that’s a great way to get pickpocketed especially the outer pockets. Either be prepared to carry it in front of you or I prefer a bag that I can see more easily
Honestly, one sided shoulder pain is a lot more tolerable for me than neck pain from carrying a backpack. I still end up carrying mine on one shoulder at the time.
Yes 100%. There are so many oversized purses for laptops. I understand it looks better but it is not practical for every day. I hope that working adult backpacks get less stigmatized.
Same. When I still went to school I had one of these Long Champ bags too. I switched to a nice backpack that fitted my laptop, books and water bottle, when I started uni. I'll never switch back.
The counter argument is when you live in a hot country. In Japan for example, Tote bags and single shoulder bags are very popular since it can get so hot during the summer and you can avoid getting a back full of sweat from backpacks.
@@DavidCruickshankIn an area that gets above 75+ humidity no amount of ventilation will keep your back from turning into a steam room. If shoulder pain is a concern one should carry lighter or opt for a rolling case.

Dude, the backpack diaper bags are where it’s at. Yes! I was so excited to get a nice work bag for a job years ago, and it resulted with bad shoulder pain. My husband suggested I get a backpack. I thought I would look childish, but I did it anyway. Now my shoulder doesn’t hurt and I can fit way more stuff in it! But I do still feel like a kid going off to school every morning lol.
I currently go to college and use a bag similar to this. I just carry mine by hand. It does make my arm hurt after a while, but I’ve gotten use to it. I suggest carrying it by hand if you don’t want to use a backpack
as a web designer who’s been freelancing since high school, the idea of using anything BUT a backpack after college was enough to put me in a neck and back brace
Agreed! As nice as some of these bags look, as someone with scoliosis I am not willing to pay out the nose for a bag that only hurts me physically and monetarily simply to just ✨look nice✨ for other people. Let alone the fact that I need to bring a laptop, paperwork, water bottle, coffee, maybe gym clothes. Not happening in a shoulder bag lol.
Used to work at Canary Wharf - the vast majority of people use a backpack. Not even a work one, but those brands that cater to mountaineers. They’ve got the lightest bags with back support, shoulder cushion and sturdy construction. Waterproof too. Just perfect.
That is actually something my mom told me since I was very little: avoid shoulder bags and if you want to look professional just use a briefcase or big leather handbang. I don't do either, I just use my backpacks because of the sheer amount and weight I need to carry around.
Couldn't agree more. The majority of Fashion Companies have their own agenda of profits to achieve no matter if it hurts their clients physically and/or mentally
Backpacks are the best honestly. I love the mini back packs and the medium sized ones. I have a collection of them and the best thing is it doesn't get on your way, it's cute and best of all, you can fit more stuff in there than a handback or other bags.
Girls here often use handbags as early as in the end of middle school. Also before I used a handbag, I wore my backpack on only one shoulder for years because I thought it was cool. NOW LET ME TELL YOU MY RIGHT SHOULDERS HURTS 24/7, even 11 years later...
I carried shoulder bags in high school because it was popular. When I went from 10th to 11th grade I decided that I wanted a backpack and ever since then I have been carrying backpacks to work. I even have smaller ones for sightseeing trips. They are handy and ergonomic. I also have cute shoulder bags but only for when I am out for dinner or coffee or shopping. Absolutely agree. I only use an office-shoulder bag when i meet client or director from other companies in an important meeting, which are very rare occasion. Most of the time, i use the backpack, i don’t care if i look like a kid/student 😂
Anybody that calls it "adulting" isnt ready. Let that shit go
Agreed. The silly "tee hee I'm adulting" thing screams immaturity.
I'm a teacher and I refuse to use anything but a backpack. I might look like a student but I sure don't have the joints of a 16 year old 😂
Never related to a comment more tbh. I don't drive so I'm not carrying a shoulder bag on my 25 mins walk to work 🙃 not a chance
My mom has been a teacher for 33yrs. Since I was a teen I've always told her to use a backpack but nope. She always went around carrying all this ebooks and supplies etc on 1 tote bag. Sometimes with heels too.
Now, 2 yrs before her retirement goal, she has a pinched shoulder nerve and a deviated spine. It is literally not worth it
@@rai1879deviated spine is nuts. I’m sorry to hear she’s in pain but you’ve definitely convinced me to opt for more supportive bags instead of just totes more often
I saw my dad using a cross body bag (briefcase?) for a while, but after carrying a laptop around became a staple for teachers he gave up and got a fancy backpack instead.
Yeah most of the teachers I’ve had use backpacks too
She looks nice! As long as she’s rocking it bc she enjoys and not to “impress” others.
So true! I am a lawyer, and have twisted shoulder and hips for life. I only caught on to the pull-along document bags much too late.
Same. I think it was a generational thing.
Kids these days! 😡
😂😂😂
Yess!!! I retired my one shoulder work bag last week. Got me a North Face backpack and I’m never looking back!!!! lol
I was going to say, rolling bags are the genius-tier version of backpacks. My back thanks me.
With nowadays rolling bags/suitcase, the noise problem could be resolved and kids wouldn't have to make it roll behind them but simply next to them thanks to the new wheels we commonly have now.
i get this but its super annoying to trip over and weave through roller backpacks in halls, its already crowded enough
@@Raphael-2 do you have a super big school without a lot of kids? Even without stairs it was a problem for us on the streets and in the hallways because it’s a tripping hazard with bags being pulled behind kids. But it would work better in schools with a huge school ground without crowded hallways
The ramp would actually be a bad idea because then the kids would be pulling their entire backpack up with one arm instead of 2 shoulders.
I will forever use a backpack for school or work it gives you way more space for essentials and keeps your hands free!
yesss! and i see women during my commute to work having two bags in each shoulder (work bag + lunch bag/file bag) and i just feel sad seeing them struggle. it sucks that some would choose to carry two bags than just one backpack cuz it would not fit with their office attire. you're not going to be needing to carry your bag around the office anyway so please just use a backpack like me😂
completely agree. it's not worth it to have shoulder pain
My scoliosis and chronic pain got as bad as they are because of social pressures (the worst damage was caused by heavy school backpacks as a small child)! A lifetime of pain is absolutely not worth it.
@auxdity6 oh my god, i know!!
Same her used to carry a huge backpack and walk for 45 minutes to get to school now i'm stuck with backpain
Seems like you have a small business opportunity LOL
Same pain points rn 🤣 couldn’t find the old good messenger bag.. it was popular around 2012-2014 right? It has been 10 years 😭
@@chjuduong yes! It was such a strangely short period of a few years in early 2010s. I've been complaining I didn't buy a bunch of them back then 😂 I had one I carried daily for about 8 years until the poor thing really couldn't take it anymore.
@@quanita7116 ha! I wish I knew how to make them 🤣
I used them in late 90's and early 2000's for college etc. They looked so cool.
Absolutely agree. Plus, if you buy a bag that is going to hold a lot of items (not laptop), even if you're not going to be carrying it around all day, choose a WIDE shoulder strap to distribute the weight more evenly. The thin ones cut into the shoulders and really hurt
Totally agree as my right shoulder will testify
Would it be possible for you to do a backpack review for work purposes? Finding a quality yet fashionable bag that won’t break the bank continues to be a tough feat.
Ps - Thanks for all your videos! I’ve learned so much!
Agree!
Totally agree, been there done that, didn't enjoy the shoulder pain. I bought myself a backpack laptop bag after that, no more shoulder pain.
😂 I use an Anello backpack from Japan for my work laptop too. But last week at a conference, I felt like I would seem more mature if I purchased a work bag. Thanks for the video.
Get the 3 way anello that turns into a shoulder bag
Get a plain black leather one :)
I don't care if I look like a college student. I'm using a backpack to carry all my work stuff. Always had and always will
💯!! This year my husband and I both switched back to backpacks, and haven't looked back 😂. They are SO very versatile and definitely help prevent imbalanced shoulder pain. 🎉 I got a super stylish black one with gold accents on Amazon, and love how classic it looks and feels.
So true! Functionality and comfort definitely is a factor.
I *love* the convertible bag trend that happened a year or so ago. I can look multiple ways at any time of the day. Some times I crave the ease of a shoulder bag, but sometimes I need to get up and go.
So true. Love the laptop bag I got from my previous company in 2018. I still use it and I keep it in great condition. Idc how I look
Totally agree. After 4 years in the field, I finally switched to backpack - and really invested in a good one :)
Yeah, an elegant looking backpack is always great (especially because there fits so much more in than a usual bag)
the way you just saved my back and shoulders😭buying a cute work backpack rn; shoulder bags are now going to be exclusively for lighter items
100%! I have a leather backpack that converts to a shoulder or crossbody .
Which one?.❤
Same opinion with diaper bags!! When I had my first kid, it was so hard to find a diaper backpack. And as someone that’s had two shoulder surgeries in my 20s, I need a backpack to reduce pain
Tumi makes incredible backpacks. Would LOVE your feedback/assessments on Tumi products!!!
Thanks for commenting about this brand! Those bags look so cute. It's a pretty penny but seems to be worth it.
Facts! Just bought a new backpack for residency. Adore my med school backpack but it’s to nice to ruin with hospital germs.
I retired my tote for the same reason. I went and bought a backpack after like two days. There is no lugging around my work laptop with a tote bag. Others do it, but not me. I like my back and shoulders to be pain free.
Amen to this!! Getting a proper backpack for work is one of the best things I ever did for my future
Thanks, I needed to hear this. 😊
Yess! Backpacks are the best. Except if you commute with a car and your working place are only a few steps away from office to parking lot, its ok to get work bag.
Backpacks are the unsung heroes ❤
I got my work bag last year from te Koop too and it’s an annello too! I love the shape, holds my laptop, thin notebooks and lunch. I can carry a hydroflask on one side and a mini coffee thermos on the other!
I agree so hard. I tried carrying around a purse with all my stuff a few times, and I thought I was the only one who felt the pain (all the women around me wear purses regularly). I invested in a mini backpack instead.
1,000% agree, I have a big girl bag that I literally never use. I feel like I look and feel so much better just like standing upright LOL
I got a classy nappy bag after using messenger bags for years. Shoulders couldn’t cope. Napoy bags have built in cooler pockets and so MANY pockets-it’s great
Lol I use a big jansport backpack that I got from target-three pockets up front, two main pockets, and a laptop packet with a bottle holder in the side
yesssss I love finding my people in the comments
I really needed to hear this today! I carry a shoulder laptop bag and I’ve been debating whether it was time to switch to a backpack
I have that same Anello Bag in Navy. Love the space, material and the fish-mouth opening!
lol when I started my legal training they gave us a backpack and were were only allowed to bring that to work so there was no ‘ I’m gonna look cool at work’ 😂😂
I sometimes leave a smaller bag at my office so I can leave my laptop at work and go home with the smaller bag bc of how bad I dreaded carrying my laptop, books ect. It’s so draining. Looking at these comments tho…I might just switch to backpacks now before it’s too late.
I totally agree. I also wore a backpack to work.
Special trick: one-shoulder-bag that can be converted into a backpack easily
Nah. I'm from europe and some people where I live do care. They see you as more childish if you're in university still wearing a backpack.
There are backpacks with anti theft features
Also convertible shoulder bags
Honestly, one sided shoulder pain is a lot more tolerable for me than neck pain from carrying a backpack. I still end up carrying mine on one shoulder at the time.
Yes 100%. There are so many oversized purses for laptops. I understand it looks better but it is not practical for every day. I hope that working adult backpacks get less stigmatized.
Same. When I still went to school I had one of these Long Champ bags too. I switched to a nice backpack that fitted my laptop, books and water bottle, when I started uni. I'll never switch back.
Please tell my mother. I have been carrying a backpack for 15 years, and she thinks I look like I'm still on HS 😅
Preach! I have this kind of thinking since I was in high school, when I tried wearing a shoulder bag for a whole day and terribly regretted it.
The counter argument is when you live in a hot country. In Japan for example, Tote bags and single shoulder bags are very popular since it can get so hot during the summer and you can avoid getting a back full of sweat from backpacks.
You can get backpacks that provide plenty of ventilation over your back. Also a sweaty back will dry, shoulder pain is for life.
Not a counter argument at all.
@@DavidCruickshankIn an area that gets above 75+ humidity no amount of ventilation will keep your back from turning into a steam room. If shoulder pain is a concern one should carry lighter or opt for a rolling case.
Reverted to backpack 4 years after grad school. Better workbag option by far.
Backpacks have only given me back pain over the years. I prefer to swap shoulders when using shoulder bags or simply just carrying a light laptop/ipad.
Dude, the backpack diaper bags are where it’s at. They’re heavy, they function as a purse if you’re the primary parent, and you have several books in there at all times in case the groin goblins are playing independently at the park and you can squeeze in a chapter. Pro tip, if you read standing with a baby carrier everybody’s happy
The constant uneven weight is still bad for your back
as a web designer who’s been freelancing since high school, the idea of using anything BUT a backpack after college was enough to put me in a neck and back brace
A beautiful backpack is a beautiful backpack. Periodt.
This! Also soft body bags, that you can fold, are generally more convenient and lighter than hard body bags.
Completely agree. I use a double-shoulder backpack to carry my laptop and all my daily stuff and have done for 15 years.
Used to work at Canary Wharf - the vast majority of people use a backpack. Not even a work one, but those brands that cater to mountaineers. They’ve got the lightest bags with back support, shoulder cushion and sturdy construction. Waterproof too. Just perfect.
I LOVE Anello backpacks! My father got me one from a tech store when we were in Japan, the quality is unmatched.
That is actually something my mom told me since I was very little: avoid shoulder bags and if you want to look professional just use a briefcase or big leather handbang. I don't do either, I just use my backpacks because of the sheer amount and weight I need to carry around.
Me too, freeing my hands and protecting my back and shoulder is more important
Totally agree. Backpack for the win.
Pharmacist here as well. I agree 100% never going back to over the shoulder bags
Nothing to heavy gets carried in those!!!
Yes! I got a cross-body laptop bag for my first office job and ditched it after 2 weeks. Switched to a basic black backpack with generous padding on the shoulder straps. Over a decade later and I’m not changing it now
Depends on how much stuff you need to carry. I always use a men's messenger bag that has a laptop compartment, a handle, and a cross body strap.
So agree about the shoulder pain. For work, laptop, lunch, etc,go backpack. Regular cute purse for dinner and a movie….
