I bought the Deluxe version the day it came out. For 'fans' not to know it was coming out ... they definitely weren't following their social media channels at the time! 'Crash Love' is so underrated. 'Darling, I Want To Destroy You', 'End Transmission', 'Veronica Sawyer Smokes' ... right up there with their best tracks. I actually love it more than DU.
If it makes sense, I think Crash Love is my favorite rock album ever made. But it's not my favorite AFI album either... but I still love it. And this is coming from someone who enjoys their older discography too.
The bonus disk has my favorite AFI song of all time just because of the enormous sound of it and the mix of genres. Fainting Spells, one of the cut Decemberunderground songs. Otherwise, if I wanna listen to AFI just to listen, I'll throw that one on and sing along. It really wasn't my favorite when it came out but I'm starting to feel like my tastes just had to catch up. I want to dive into Burials and Blood more, but I either haven't had time or haven't felt like trying to really give them a listen.
Interesting how people's taste is. I find Crash Love to be an abomination, it's by far the worst AFI album (outside of Bodies of course) and End Transmission is pretty much the only good song on it. Interesting to hear them acknowledge that STS and DU was their peak commercially, and that it's been downhill since. I think Burials and The Blood Album are pretty good, but they don't hold a candle to AOD or STS. Interesting to see that the masses agree.
CL was definitely a departure for AFI at the time and took some getting used to. Now i've come to consider it a brilliant album. It seems to have a single theme running thru it, and as someone else said, would make a grand "rock" opera. I wish they had talked more about the making of the record in this interview.
@@christopherducati Agreed, the scene was changing, not to mention music sales in general and the whole market was crashing and bands/ labels hadn't adjusted to it yet.
I bought this record the day it came out actually. It was like late September of that year if I recall correctly. It came out the same day Breaking Benjamin released their Dear Agony album, so I bought both on the same day and was super excited for all this new music. I really enjoyed this album, and still do.
I loved Crash Love. In fact, it's one of my favorites. And having been an AFI fan since the hardcore days, I am usually delighted in how each record differs from the last but you can still tell that it is them. I've enjoyed seeing them grow up, mature and expand as individuals and artists over the years.
I picked this album up the day it came out. The album resonated with me in a way the others hadn’t. It was surely a different sound but a very welcome one for me. Oh and the deluxe version had so many killer extra tracks. It’s a bit disheartening to see the band get that kind of response to it, but I cherish this one dearly.
I don't normally stay on top of news about my favorite bands, and even *I* knew Crash Love was coming out. The local alternative radio station here actually had the entire album on their site to stream before it was released. I remember sitting at my computer and not moving until the album was over. I love their pre-mainstream music, but Crash Love is definitely my favorite (post-STS) AFI album.
This was a slow burner for me. Didn't like it to start with and thought AFI were going through the motions... but gave it a few listens and started to love it with time. Some fantastic songs on there!
I remember expecting more of the synths and programming seen on DU, and being weirdly surprised to hear a more guitar-driven effort; I was kind of glad, but also sort of disappointed lol. Nonetheless, it has certainly only grown on me over time as well.
I recall being there front and to the left, mere feet from Jade, less than a week after the album came out... singing along ti Torch Song as the opener. I most definitely knew that album was coming out and was shocked the day it appeared in my iTunes, having preordered the Deluxe version. I even just wore the octopus shirt that came with the vinyl a couple days ago, 13 years and it still fits.
I remember listening to Crash Love when it came out. I remember I really loved Torch Song & Cold Hands but I thought the rest of the album was kind of mediocre. But upon relistening to it for the first time this year I was blown away with how many truly solid songs were on that album. Beautiful Thieves, End Transmission, Veronica Sawyer, I Feel Better Now, Medicate etc are all great and I'm sorry that I stopped following for 10 years. But I'm back to stay now!
i fucking adore this band but when this album came out, i seriously had no idead until weeks it had released. not my favorite album but still enjoy it.
October 2009 I attended mtvU's Ulalume festival. Paramore headlined this festival but the supporting bands were AFI, Dead by Sunrise, and Kid Cudi. AT this point, I'd been listening to AFI since 2006...but this was my first time seeing them live in concert. Their setlist was shorter being a supporting band which but they didn't fail to deliver a high-energy performance. The setlist included songs off their new album, Crash Love. Ironically I adore this album despite it not being commercially successfully and not a favorite of most AFI fans. Decemberunderground will always be the first album but it isn't my favorite album. I didn't listen to Sing the Sorrow album until a year ago...let alone their previous album. Few weeks ago, I saw AFI again in concert for a second time...but this time they were the headliner band for their The Blood Tour. It was a little over 8 year gap the times I've seen AFI in concert. Quite interesting seeing them high schooler and now as an adult. Even though AFI band members don't tour...I mean they're exactly youngsters anymore so rigorous touring is even more exhasuting. I can totally understand this. I love the evolution of AFI. Actually AFI was one of the two bands that officially introduced me to rock genre back in 2006. Three Days Grace is the other band. Also I highly recommend Blaqk Audio. This is side project of Davey and Jade. I recently discovered Blaqk Audio's music...then got the opportunity to see them live in May 2016. Blaqk Audio is more dark wave electronica but it nonetheless grew on me.
I remember being so hyped for Crash Love when I was younger. I saw them live for the first time at Edgefest that year. I can't believe people 'didn't know' Crash Love was out.
Crash Love feels like the orphan child sometimes. I personally think Burials was their weakest album, but even it has almost its own cult following within the AFI fanbase - Crash Love doesn't even really get hate, more like no attention at all - which is a shame, as "It Was Mine" and "Darling I Want to Destroy You" are real gems.
Because there's not much special they can really say about it. "we went to a normal studio, we were middle aged and it was pretty tame and through the motions" It's not like their old albums where they actually held nostalgia for the times.
I remember being so hyped for this record from the moment it was announced, on myspace I think??!? (that makes me feel old) and I really like it! it's a shame seeing bands that I like kind of losing their momentum commercially, but I guess as long as they're still making quality music that's all that really matters :)
Well, the thing about AFI is that they've only been in the commercial spotlight for two (possibly three) records now. But in reality, they've always been a band that's been driven by a cult-following more than general fandom. That makes them stand out, and very special. While it's true that they probably aren't driving in fancy cars or living in fancy houses, they're also really down to earth people. So I know that regardless of how many records they sell, or shows they do, they're more than capable of making it all work. Kudos to them!
Crash Love was probably their greatest Opus. And medicate might be one of the slickest video's ever made. The full 2nd album is really excellent too. Bands have these moments where they all come together and just can turn out nothing but classic's- like creatively, they are in a place where they can do no wrong, I feel CL is like that- Coldplay's 3rd album was the same, just everything they made at that time was stellar. I never got into their 'Punk' period, as that had passed before I ever even heard of them, I caught wind of them with Sing the sorrow, but I Love all of their stuff and think CL is probably my favorite. It shows a real polished musicianship where the others may have been rougher, but in a good way. I always just prey they make a comfortable living doing what they do b/c they are talented, enjoyable to listen to, and deserve it.
I have seen AFI many times after Crash Love came out, and they never play any songs from this album. Im pretty sure the only time Ive heard them play CL songs was for the CL tour.
I've seen them open for 30 Seconds to Mars and Linkin Park, and they played Medicate. This was back in 2015ish, and it was just one song... but I think they play at least that song somewhat to a degree. But then again with two albums that came out afterwards, along with an EP, I think it makes sense that they would drop any songs from Crash Love now as it's not the record that the fan base as a whole loves. Crash Love still gets looked over; just look at how they barely talk about in this video. >_>
I'd like to think the guys would see this comment although I doubt it. I fucking love this record so many dope songs. I love afi literally play 5 or 6 records of afi everyday at work to the point all my dudes at work r like wtf afi again but now when I put on veronica Sawyer smokes or anything these hip hop fans r singing that shit so. This record and burials r highly important to me. I adore all afi records
Crash Love is up there with Sing the Sorrow, for me. I sadly didn't have internet, so I didn't even discover this album until Medicate randomly showed up on a radio, I thought it was AFI and then my friend, who had way more money than me (since I was a broke college kid and couldn't even afford rent or a phone) looked up the lyrics and confirmed it was AFI. I then ran down to my local CD/record shop and listened to the whole thing there. I didn't officially get internet or get to enjoy the record until 4 years ago or so, when I finally graduated, got a job, and had internet. I really love this record.
When I first heard this album, I hated it. I was a freshman in High School at the time. Fast forward now…it probably seems like I’m bullshitting, but this is my favorite album. The definition of ‘aging like fine wine.’ This album got me through some arduous training and some low points in my life.
I went to a signing and got Decemberunderground autographed by everyone shortly after the album came out. Maybe he was having a bad day or something, but Davey was a total asshole. He acted like he didn't want to be there and he was a jerk to everyone, not just to me but to his bandmates. The rest of the guys were all super nice though.
I hear mixed things about him. Some people say he's an a-hole, but others say he's really nice. I guess he's a moody guy... which is what his lyrics would indicate.
It's an acquired taste for the album, I honestly thought it was a bad. Then I a few more plays as I matured and it hit me good. The riffs and the melodies were beautiful and still are.
Honestly I think the death of music video channels like MTV and FUSE killed this record lol. People weren't use to hearing about new records unless it was on those channels.
i think Crash Love did not do as well because the lead single Medicate was not a strong song at all. They almost never play it anymore. Veronica Sawyer Smokes should of been the lead single.
I think this album wasn't as successful due to a big change in their image, they kinda went 180 with their looks and style, music was great but anyone (not everyone obviously) who was following them at the time probably were turned off by such a change
Didn't really listen to much of burials, they basically haven't put out anything that appeals to me since art of drowning aside from a song or 2 here and there..
@@daveys4863 Burials at least has A Deep Slow Panic on it, which is a really good song. Nothing on AFI's two most recent albums (The Blood Album and Bodies) appealed to me at all. I guess they've been on a downward spiral, but they've been around for 30 years, so it's understandable.

Definitely agree. Crash Love is the ONLY album I can listen to without skipping a single track
I love this record so much when it came out and I still listen to it very often, to this day.

CRASH LOVE WAS AMAZING. Thats all. I fucking loved it.
Crash love is great. Catchy, straight forward, guitar driven. Maybe my favorite AFI album next to Sing the Sorrow.
Crash Love is an amazing album.
Crash/Love is still one of my favorite albums in 2022, sooooo underrated
The label obviously did a terrible job advertising this album.
TheSecretNinja337 yes they definitely did
TheSecretNinja337 it was 2009 the decline of rock was in full swing. Had the album came out in 2007 it would have done much better commercially.

They were touring with Green Day when this record came out, which was awesome!

This albums biggest downfall was that Jerry Finn had passed away and wasn’t around to produce it. That album needed his touch.

crash love is a fantastic album. defiantly more of a rock album. would love to see an opera made from it

This whole albums underrated. I wish people would do more interviews with just Hunter and Adam.

i got crash love the day it came out as well, it was a great album though it wasn't their best imo....
Man I thought this album was great. I saw this tour & they killed it of course
I always thought this was a solid album. At the time I liked it more than December

Hmmmm. This one is probably my least favorite out of all of them.
This was by far their worst album anyway..
afraid NOT. the best thing they ever did was the all hallow's EP lol
It's a much better album then the most recent two lol.
You must have it confused with Burials
Didn't really listen to much of burials, they basically haven't put out anything that appeals to me since art of drowning aside from a song or 2 here and there..
