    For me the laphroaig quarter cask is the boldest and at its high strength best value for money out there with Ardbeg we beastie coming in second for me .3 would be boona to tech dha .4 tobermory 12 .5 Glencadam 10. All superb value. Port Charlotte just to expensive for me to justify for 10 year old good as it may be i wouldn't say great value unless it was £45/46.

    In the USA, Loch Lomond 12, Bunnahabhain Stiùireadair, Scarabus, Glencadam 10, and Benromach 10 can still be found under $40, and between them they check a lot of boxes.

    This is a great video Alan. Good content, well presented.👍
    If we reckon "affordable" means £60-ish or less in the UK then my list is;-
    Cù Bòcan Signature (£45)
    Port Charlotte 10 (£55)
    Michter's US*1 Straight Rye (£60) (expensive but moreish!)
    Edradour Caledonia 12 (£62)
    Glencadam 15 (£65)
    [ current prices according to one of the largest UK online retailers ]
    Also an honourable mention to Glen Scotia Double Cask Rum Finish (£47) for sending me down a rum rabbit hole. Highlights on that journey so far include Doorly's 12, Appleton 12, Hampden 8 & Alkemy sugar beet spirit from Suffolk in England.

    You are spot on about Port Charlotte 10 and it’s been the best Islay 10 year for a few years now. Ben Nevis 10 should have made the list because it’s easy to get where you are. Loch Lomond 12 is pretty good bang for the buck also

  • @thewhiskyenthusiast

    Great list Alan, all solid drams but I need to get my hands on the Thompson Bros, all I hear are great things! My 5 right now would be; Loch Lomond 12, Glen Scotia Double Cask, Deanston 10 Bordeaux, Ledaig Rioja and Laphroaig Quarter Cask. Cheers friend!

    Cracking list Alan. I would go with these in the affordable category, Benromach Contrast Peat Smoke, Lochlomond 12, Craigellachie 13, Compassbox Orchard House, Tobermory 12.

  • @simonsherratt1484
    @simonsherratt1484 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ardnamurchan sherry cask is £60 if you're lucky, more likely £63 - £65. The AD bottling is a fair bit cheaper thus more affordable and still top notch quality

    Nice list, Alan, except that I'm still struggling with my Craigellachie 13 & haven't tried the Speyburn 15 yet...Agree about the Ardnamurchans (the Sherry Cask haven't hit our shelves yet, mind you, and we didn't have any allocation for the Madeira one which is a shame) and Benromach is "mandatory" here value wise. Completely agree about PC 10 VS Ardbeg 10, recently opened those 2 & the difference is huge (review soon of the Ardbeg on my channel) in favor to the PC (they really improved it since the first releases I think). Cheers !

    I used to buy the Speyburn 10 when it was bottled at 43% abv for the US market, but then they rebranded and lowered it to 40% abv. I did pick up several bottles of the 43% 10 year on a closeout of $17 a bottle, though. It's a perfectly fine summertime dram when you're outside working the grill or playing horseshoes.

    • @thewhiskyfriend
      @thewhiskyfriend  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not really a speyburn 10 man think I need the 15 or 18 and even the single casks are great, however if your just starting out on scotch then the speyburn 10 is a no brained fella

  • @djbeacon6895

    Great 5 Alan. Especially the Craigellachie 13. Have started with the Ardnamurchan CS 09.22 and good but kinda rough/raw. Would add the popular Loch Lomond 12. And Compass Box Great King St Artist's Blend. Cheers!

  • @whiskynotes9326
    @whiskynotes9326 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Craigellachie 13
    Arran sherry cask
    Loch Lomond 15 (in Sweden, the 12 otherwise)
    Bunnahabhain 12
    Kilchoman sanaig

  • @michaelwood3203
    @michaelwood3203 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Alan it is seems to be a list which is the on the pricey side of affordable. The Laphroig Quarter Cask, Ardbeg Wee Beastie 5, Talisker 10 have recently been sub £35. The Ileach CS and Finlaggan CS a not much more than £40/45. Timorous Beastie CS and Sherried Beast CS and some of the best of Douglas Laing range eg Big Peat, Scallywags Gauldrons etc have been around £40/45. I can pick up inchmurrin 12 and inch Moan 12 for £35. So a price conscious range might really help the whisky enthusiasts. It sounds like I am being critical, it is not my intention, because you identify good choices but for those on a stretched budget the price needs to be much more like the Thompson Bros range of the spectrum to make them competitive and affordable.

    • @thewhiskyfriend
      @thewhiskyfriend  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your 100% correct michael however my thinking was for enthusiasts like yourself and wanting that little bit of quality....at the same time newbies to whisky could enjoy all of these without breaking the bank I tried to keep these to £55 max...but thanks for dropping in fella

  • @davidowen2834

    Hi Alan, craigellachie 13 and port Charlotte 10 are two great examples of good value quality malts. Benromach peat smoke is up there as well. Also Loch Lomand 12 and the Arran QC would be on my list. Slàinte Alan.

  • @rupertansell4662

    Great selection Alan. My five would be Glenallachie 12, Port Charlotte 10, Ardnamurchan core, Kilkerran Heavily Peated and Glencadam 13 ‘The Reawakening’. Just my humble opinion of course and this could change tomorrow 😀

  • @patrickc7834

    Fantastic list really. I whould like to mention Glen Scotia 15 as well. The TB/BSW is really a weapon. It arrived 2 weeks ago in my little cave and blow me away with quality. Honorable mention to Tomatin Legacy, too. Even as a whisky geek I enjoy it. And its about 20€, which is nuts for a Scotch, that is fine to sip really. I've made a big purchaise of a bunch of whiskys yesterday, but Speyburn didn't make the cut. I am very curious about the new Glenglassaugh 12yo.

    If I paid twice the your price with the currency exchange in Australia, ie GBP$50- = AUD$100- we'd be laughing. Our taxes here absolutely kill us & take our prices to the extreme !!! That GBP$50 is like AUD$150- here :( Affordable is subjective, but given what we pay here, I'd say..... Cutty Sark Prohibition, Glengoyne 12, Loch Lomond 18, Glen Scotia 15 , Bladnoch 11 ( keeping it scotch & without naming the usual suspects) ----- 100% Agree with Orchard house although difficult to get a hold of and I cant see Thomson Bros available in Australia :(
