Stu, it's me again (Joe). I've taken the plunge, and have bought a couple of wind generators, one horizontal, and one vertical. But I have a question for you about the hookup to the rectifier/controller units that came with each generator. Can you help, Please? I have a three-wire wind generators, and common inexpensive potted wind controllers that came with. All three wires from the generator are the same color: Red. And the three controller wires are all the same color, also. Does it matter which generator wire goes to which controller terminal/wire?, or can the hookup be made in any fashion, and still have the same (identical, is it?), best result? The face of the controller package has a diagram of a three-bladed wind turbine blade, with the center wire of the three controller wires coming from the second (middle one) of the three generator wires. If the order of the hookup matters at all, how can I determine which generator wire is that center wire (or either of the other phase wires)? Or, as I speculate, since all the wires and terminals are given the same color, does the order of the hookup to the controller (rectifier) simply not matter at all? In any case, how did YOU proceed, and manage to get a good result in the hookup? Please help! Others here may have this question, too. Thanks a million!, --Joe / Tucson ARIZONA / USA
Just found your channel today. I've been binge watching! I love your excitement and enthusiasm for your subjects. I'm excited to try some of your health remedies. I too have been riding dirt bikes since I was a kid and know all too well the side effects. My parents always told me I'd pay for it when I got older. Well I'm definitely older! I have arthritis in both knees, my right shoulder, and my neck. I recently spent a few weeks at my daughter's house, where I installed tile flooring in her four bedrooms, and master bathroom. By the second bedroom I could barely walk much less kneel on the floor. Fortunately my son in law had a low seated roller chair that I used in the remaining rooms. So, I hope that I will get some relief from your list. Thank you so much for all the interesting content. My husband wants to do your terra cotta pot water filtration project. Can't wait to see more videos. Take care and God Bless. Please give your beautiful rabbit a love from me. He's adorable. Bye for now!
My recently bought unit looks very similar to what you have with the exception of the mounting system. Mine slips over a 2 inch pipe not a flat flange like yours. Be sure to inspect your wiring especially where it comes through the mount, mine was chafed down to the wire which could short out. My fix is 3 individual heatshrinks over each wire followed by a large heatshrink over all 3. I would guess the wiring will be the weak link if you try to increase the output with more magnets as the wire seems low quality, about as rigid as a wet noodle. In the US we have anti-seize made by Permatex that would be longer lasting for bolts going into the housing, I use it whenever I'm working with something I make want to take apart again, especially automotive lug nuts and chassis bolts, great stuff
Yes I restore old Land Rovers and I use Coppercote on everything as I assemble. For this project I tried to do it all with no purchasing. I will be putting it up the tower this weekend- watch out for the video. BTW- I did wiegh the blades- they were all 23 grams exactly and had no burrs or flashings to clean off
Great video! One suggestion: Do the same checks and lubricating of the rotating shaft as well as the alternator front plate. It will ensure a smoother rotation of the turbine thus reducing the wear on the shaft.
Just saw your Chinese wind turbine prep video. Didn't see anything on blade balancing or subsequent videos on adding magnets to increase power output. Was this not done, or were these videos not included in your list?
There are about 4 videos and there will be more. adding magnets made a big difference. so much difference that in a recent storm my budget 10 amp PWM controller spat the dummy and I was getting 45 vdc fed into my batteries. th-cam.com/video/eJWGosce6m0/w-d-xo.html
Excellent! tutorial and demonstration, with well-reasoned explanations based on real experience, thank you! Caveats: (1.) As for lubricating the O-ring, I'd worry about using any petroleum product on it, though. The reason is that petroleum products are destructive to BUNA-rubber, such as is commonly used to make inexpensive O-rings. In vacuum applications, such as the cryogenic dewars I am accustomed to using and maintaining in research in Astronomy, we use Dow-Corning vacuum grease on O-rings, not only because it has an extremely low vapor-pressure (so as not to spoil a high vacuum), but because it does not attack rubber (one can also use substitute O-ring material which in itself has an even lower vapor-pressure, such as PTFE rings, at slightly greater expense). A small tube of vacuum grease is a lifetime-supply! ...I've had mine for 45 years. (2.) Another note: petroleum jelly on the outside of the casing body will attract and hold grit and other dirt, and a seal is in any case not to be guaranteed. As an alternative, one can run a bead of Silicone caulk material around the parting-line. This will cure, surely, and harden but remain pliable, and can be easily parted whenever the machine head is taken apart again. These are small tweaks, but I hope they may be of general help, and of interest to viewers to consider. --Joe Montani / Tucson ARIZONA / USA / W7DXW
Thanks for your positivity Joe. That was a great read. excess petroleum jelly was wiped off as I fitted the turbine to the pole. Its been up for a while and performed adequately.... It charges batteries when the sun is over your side of the planet. (we do get some ripper winds through here at night! Im testing it using a cheap watt meter that appears to be showing slightly less than my multimeter. there will be another vid on tis posted tomorrow and updates will follow soon where I increase the magnets in two steps. I hope you will enjoy them. Cheers Stu NZ.
Thank you, Stu!, great to make your acquaintance. As yet I have no wind turbines up, but I'm researching them, and it's excellent to have pointers from your experience in your use and improvement of them there. We also have some powerful winds here, and some have brought down my amateur radio antennas during our summertime monsoon thunderstorms in the desert. I'm hesitant about the Chinese turbines. But it seems, as you clearly show, that the quality and performance of them can be improved by the owner with some well-directed know-how (wisdom), and a skilled steady hand. I may take the plunge! I'm attracted to vertical turbines, because I like the fact that there is no set of circular contacts ("slip-rings", I mean) and brushes neither needed nor used, so it's all a bit simpler in my view. Now, although it seems that the vertical turbines may need a little stronger winds than the horizontal units, I'd only be supplementing my photovoltaics and battery storage here anyway, but every little bit of power generated and kept on hand for use is of help. Else, our winds are wasted! ;-) Good on you for all your efforts and successes, and for sharing your experience and practical technic. Best regards, across the miles and hemispheres, and Thanks, ...from me and my big red tabby cat in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona (your rabbit is quite a darling creature, & a movie-star!) --Joe / W7DXW
Hi Jason- Its been on the list for months! I have had too much urgent stuff to do and Ive not been able to get this thing up the pole. You are not the first to ask either! The last season was hectic with flood repairs, garden work and getting my GFand her daughter settled in here in her own cabin. As the pressure eases off, I'll be able to get this project back on track. The old self built one is still working fine, so Ive just had to get on with all the work caused by the terrible weather we have been having. Rest assured- Im real keen to get it up and spinning.
Couple of years ago, I had one not spinning from new.... had 2 brushes contacting the same slip ring on the commutator. - did what you did and polished the rings. Got 100w some days.
Did anything ever come of this? I've checked your back catelogue, and this seems to be the last we see. Any chance of an update on the baseline, and the quest for more power mate?
Im sitting editing the video right now 😉 Its been a very busy time here and we just could not get to it! But the news is good. the turbine is up and working. most of the good wind has been at night so no dramatic footage yet. It performs- 'adequately' Ive seen 40watts of power from it on occasion. far from the promised 400 watts. but its a base line. video will be up in 24 hours. Thanks so much for your patience.
I found the stock wires 3mm square area to be adequate. the new brushes holder is much better than old models. In my 12 year old DIY turbine the wires went directly down the mast with no slip rings or brushes. - never tangled in 12 years. I hope that helps?
How about lithium grease? Vaseline gets hot, attracts dirt & will break down. My mechanic says use a dab of motor oil on the threads of a screw. Better yet use an anti-seize compound or graphene used to lubricate locks.
