    I had this happen to me in 1985 to a 1974 Ford Bronco that sat submerged for two days. An old mechanic told me what to do to possibly save it and it took me a week and a hundred dollars of fluids (at that time fluids were cheap). Drained and flushed axles, transfer case and transmission. Pulled the oil pan, drained the oil and water and then filled the engine with kerosene and let it sit for a day. Drained the kerosene and then filled with a 50/50 of kerosene and oil and let it sit another day. Did that four times. Then drained and filled with fresh oil including putting an ounce on each piston through the spark plug hole. Finally cranked it over and it actually started. Ran it to temp, drained and refilled with new filter and did this three times. After all of that the vehicle actually ran without an issue and surprisingly had better compression and ran better than it ever did. Amazing!

      This will usually work as long as there is just water and no sand. Sand is an engine killer for sure. @richardstone5241 I got lucky when I did this, the car was cold, so unlike when I had previously done it, the engine stalled because the electrics got soaked. Once it time to dry off, it started up fine. Sitting in the puddle for 15 minutes did mean that I ended up replacing both CV joints eventually, but that was under warranty. In another case, my friend ended up with a Honda dream pulled from a pond. He replaced the oil and filter,, then we spent 20 minutes kicking it over. Replaced the oil and filter again, and the plugs, then after another 10 minutes got it to run. Ran it for 10 minutes, and replaced the oil and filter *AGAIN*. After that it gave no more trouble.

    I’m an ex mechanic living in England I remember working on a car that had driven through a flood it had picked up water into the engine tried to compress the water which of course is impossible so it smashed the piston bent the con rod which then proceeded to drive itself through the block.

  • @CedroCron
    @CedroCron 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    Ray after the rings and walls got wet there would be no compression because it severely washed the walls and rings, you need to put some oil (Like 1/4 of a cup) into each of the cylinders to re-lubricate the rings and walls to build compression. Then turn over the engine with the plugs removed, It's possible that you will have enough compression then. Then re-test with your compression tester.

    • @michaelslee4336

      No dude. A piston and rings bone dry in a dry cylinder will simply have way more compression than you may realise. All of that air isn’t just magically going to go sneaking past the piston. This has no doubt bent the rods, damaged the timing system and pistons kissed the valves or a combination of it all.

    • @CedroCron
      @CedroCron หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@michaelslee4336 Having rebuilt a lot of engines and having fixed engines that have sat for decades I can tell you it's the oil on the cylinder walls and edge of the ring / on the piston ringlands that absolutely makes a seal and yes you can have 0 compression with dry cylinders. Especially in modern engines with lower tension piston rings for fuel economy and/or plasma sprayed and polished cylinders.

    When I was a kid, the main road coming from town to our rural neighborhood had a low spot that would flood occasionally. During one of these rare floods, my neighbor went out there with his Ford tractor so that he could pull hydrolocked cars out of the low area. One idiot with a little convertible sports car went through after being told not to, and hydrolocked his engine. My neighbor told him NOT to try starting it. He told him he to wait for the tow truck. He completely ignored my neighbor, and got in the car, and cranked the engine over. Bad things happened. Stupidity.

    I'm no mechanic, but I have heard, that if an engine hydro locks, NEVER try to re-start it!
    I remember this, in my Sea-Do manual.
    It stated, that if the unit capsizes, or the engine stalls, to remove the spark plugs, and clear the cylinders, before attempting a re-start.
    It really does make sense, that when an engine stalls, due to hydro locking, it just stalled, and, while the engine did ingest water, it only stalled.
    The attempt to restart the engine, is when the real damage occurs.
    This would be the best case scenario, on an engine, running on lower RPMs.
    If the engine hydro-locks at high RPM, the momentum would rip the engine apart.
    It sounds like they really went at it, trying to get the car to start, instead of taking a breath, removing the spark plugs, and clearing out the water, before trying to start the engine.
    I knew someone, many years ago, who tried racing his brand-new Challenger through flood water.
    The resulting hydro lock, because the engine was at high RPM, destroyed it!
    The dealer laughed at him, when he had it towed in, expecting them to replace the engine under warranty.
    The only thing that saved his hide?
    His insurance company paid to replace the engine, under the stipulation, he was trying to get to safety, during a flood.
    What they didn't know, is he was just being an idiot...

    • @Delsus89
      @Delsus89 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      The issue when you start a hydrolocked engine is water does not compress so when the engine tries to compress the air fuel mixture the water resists it causing all sorts of possible damage, bent rods, damaged pistons possibly even damaging the block because the water has nowhere to go. Best thing to do is exactly what Ray did, pull all the spark plugs and crank the engine to fire the water out, you still have no guarantee that it will get all of it out though

    • @xericicity
      @xericicity 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Makes sense, water hardly compress at all, so something is going to blow from the insane pressure. Valves, pistons, the block, etc...

    • @KentuckyRanger
      @KentuckyRanger 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@Delsus89 Exactly!
      Where an engine, running at low RPM, hydro locking just stalls the engine.
      But when you force the engine to turn over, with a starter, things start to break.
      But if the engine is running at high RPM, the momentum will kill it.

    • @legionofanon
      @legionofanon 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Just once I've had to deal with a hydrolocked engine. It was on a riding lawnmower with a single cylinder engine. A piece of crud got caught under needle in the carburetor, and let the half-gallon of gas in the fuel tank completely drain into the engine.
    Thankfully, that beast had a translucent plastic fuel tank, and a cutout in the body fairing, to where you could easily see the fuel level. I couldn't see any fuel in the tank, which puzzled me, since I knew it had been half full when I finished using it the week before.
    Pulled the oil dipstick - level was three times higher than what it was supposed to be, was incredibly thin, and smelled of gas.
    Then pulled the spark plug - and gas came pouring out of the plug hole. When I tried cranking it over, it shot gas over 6 feet out of the plug hole.
    Thankfully, because I'd caught it before trying to start the beast, it was just a matter of rebuilding and cleaning out the carb, and draining, cleaning, and relubricating the engine.
    And I got rid of that wire mesh gravel screen 150 micron filter they'd put on it from the factory, and put a proper fuel filter along with a fuel shutoff valve on it.

    In fairness to the owner (and I have been in a similar situation) when your engine dies and you are stuck in rising water, you begin to panic. You aren't thinking about the engine hydrolocking, you are desperately thinking about "how the hell am I going to get out of here?" and keep cranking.
    Yeah its crazy and hindsight is 20/20, but panic can override common sense quite easily.

    So, one cylinder ingesting water will cause the engine to stall, and if anyone has seen a diesel with an injector stuck open, you'll know this. For all 4 cylinders to have ingested water like that, and for all 4 cylinders to have bent rods, he was going pretty fast and at a rather high RPM for it to overcome the force of steel rods bending.

    Hydrolock is no fun! Back when I was a Warranty Engineer for the US operation of a MAJOR Diesel engine manufacturer (German air cooled to give you a clue) we got an engine back claiming "Factory Defect" as they always did. Never mind that in 8 years we found only FIVE actual factory defects! The rest were abuse, neglect, misuse, and even downright sabotage!
    This one was a real doozy! Engine came in with holes through both sides of the block, full of fresh oil right up to the holes, and a new (dry) oil filter installed. We knew something was "fishy" about it, especially from the smell after it sat in the shop for a few days! The customer claimed they went to start it one day and it was locked up. Yeah, right. So how do you explain the DEAD FISH we found ON TOP of the engine when we started digging into it?
    After telling them what we found they admitted the machine was in a rock quarry that flooded, and they tried to start it and drive it out. Yep, hydrolocked, and with the almost 100Hp starter these things had (BIG engine) it bent most of the connecting rods (about the size of your leg from the knee down) into a "U" shape!
    No free engine for YOU!

    Sucked water into a bike engine once....but...she lives still. I took the plugs out before I cranked it. Got the water out. Rode her home gently, swapped the oil and filter, flushed out the oil tank ( dry sump) to get rid of contaminated oil and any water that was in there, and all was good. As a precation, she got a further oil change after a week, so any moisture inside would have got either boiled off or emulsified. Fresh oil.
    When you hydro lock a motor, the temptation is to try and turn it over and pump out that water. No. Under compression, ALL the valves in a cylinder are closed. Water won;t compress, so something else has to give. Rods. Pistons. Rings. Head gasket .... it's got to go somewhere.

I was just wondering if that owner has come back to you now that you’re in your own shop? I love you videos and content. We have a boat with twin 454s. An oil cooler failed and when I shut the engine off water got sucked into the oil. It did not get int the cylenders to make them wet. Changed the oils 4 times and it was still slightly milky. Ran it for 20 hours and it cleared up. Changed the oil again and it worked fine. Have run the engine 1,500 hours since then and it still works. Water like you have one would assume mechanical failure of rings or valve or head gasket. Be interesting to see the cause. Since it turns over without noise a cheap (A few hours $600) look would be to remove the head.

    I remember from about 2.5 years ago when there was heavy rain here with lots of flooding. So many cars were being towed away due to trying to ford water.
    I remember one in particular occuring when I was there. The guy kept trying to start the motor. You try to tell them not to, but they do anyway. I opened the bonnet, took the air filter off and it has at least 2 litres / half a gallon of water in there which was overflow from what was already in the motor (full on waterlogged air filter).
    Sure, I drove through some water (after evaluating the depth from other road users) but I did it super slow (so slow that others were impatient and passing me) as I didn't want to ingest water. Years later, my car is still good as it only just splashed the rims (at best)

    Since there was so much water in the engine it is highly likely that all of the oil helping seal the rings was washed away. I was working on an MGB that came in with 0 compression. Found the chokes had been stuck open (washing the cyliners down). I put some oil in all the cylinders, let it soak for a while, cranking it and compression was well above 100 in all four cylinders. Fixed the stuck choke problem, changed the oil and it was fixed. So, there is chance with oiling and engine flushing this KIA could still breathe.

    I pushed a car out of 24 inches of water, I told him to have someone pull the plugs before even trying to start it or he could ruin his engine. The only reason I pushed him out was because there were about 15 other adults just standing there when I showed up and his 2 year old daughter was crying in the back seat while the water was still rising slowly with rain still in the area. I pushed his car up a mild grade and when I got it out of the water is when a couple of guys finally came to help push the car around the corner. I only stuck around long enough till his daughter calmed down and I left cause it could have gotten ugly with all those adults there and myself. Love you Ray but this video just brought back some very bad memories from a couple years past.

    The first thing to do is check the air cleaner if wet pull the spark plugs then turn over it when the cylinders cleared change the oil and dry the spark plugs or replace them and check the fuel system for water

    • @RMartin631
      @RMartin631 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Changing the oil is a waste of time and money. When an engine shows ZERO compression, there is no point in going any further. Hydrolocking is always 100% fatal for an engine. Water does not compress and when a cylinder gets a lot of water in it something is going to give. 3 of the spark plugs were loose and that means the water tried to push them out through the spark plug threads in the head.

    • @evilgtidriver
      @evilgtidriver 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RMartin631not true. If you’re driving slow through water and it hydrolocks and shit off, as long as you don’t try to crank it again, you may get lucky. First thing you do is pull the plugs. Then crank it until no water sprays out. Then you should be good if no damage occurred when it initially died.

    Looks like the first chamber valves were both stuck open and it looked like the top of the piston had been contacted, so that will be why they are all low on compression, and if 3 and 4 are communicating there was a serious series of catastrophic impacts before the engine shut of.

He goes flying right through it and the 2.0 liter 8 valve engine sucks in water. It hydrolocks and the result is four bent connecting rods. New engine.
    Which mommy and daddy paid for.

    There may or may not be bent rods. It's obvious they either cracked the head or blew the head gasket though, at the very minimum. No way to tell how extreme the damage is without disassembly. If it is just the head gasket though, they got very lucky. I suspect it's a lot more than the head gasket though.
