Paul Simon met Kathleen Mary “Kathy” Chitty at the very first English folk club in which he played, the Railway Inn Folk Club in Brentwood, Essex, on 12th April, 1964. Kathy who worked there was then 17, Paul was 22, and it appears to have been love at first sight. A few weeks later Simon wrote "Homeward Bound" as he sat on Widnes Railway Station waiting for the train that would take him back to her. There's a plaque at the station recalling this event. Later that year he invited her to the US where they toured around mainly by bus. Kathy returned to England on her own with Simon returning to her some weeks later. During this separation he wrote "America", clearly a love song to Kathy: "Kathy, I'm lost," I said, though I knew she was sleeping "I'm empty and aching and I don't know why" During their separation he also wrote the immortal "Kathy’s Song", one of the most beautiful love songs ever written: I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets To England where my heart lies. My mind's distracted and diffused My thoughts are many miles away They lie with you when you're asleep And kiss you when you start your day. When he returned to London he recorded the album "The Paul Simon Songbook" that included Kathy’s Song, and had a photo of Simon and Kathy on the cover. In the meantime, "The Sound of Silence" started to receive major air-play in America eventually becoming No 1 in the US charts in 1965. Simon felt the need to return to the US to continue his career but this meant splitting up with Kathy because she wanted no part of the crazy US music scene. Kathy later married and brought up three children in a remote mountain village in North Wales where she still lives - she is now a grandmother. Now well into his 70s, Simon recalls their months together with great tenderness and says it was "by far the most peaceful time of my life". In fact he didn't hear from her for over 20 years but after the success of "Graceland" she wrote to congratulate him. When, in 1991, Simon toured the UK, Kathy and her family attended his show in Sheffield. They met again in July 2004 after his "Old Friends Reunion Tour" stop at Hyde Park in London (where her three children now live).
Thank you for sharing this beautiful story of love, separation and reunion many years later! It filled my heart with nostalgia for the old days of my own life! An amazing and tender song that now has new meaning to me.

This is unterruptedly beautiful, she has the effortless ability to permeate one's senses and evoke such intensifying visuals ❤ her
Today was the first time i heard this Beautiful song watching a movie “ mahathan”
She changed the way I perceived music. Thank you 💜 🙏
Music lovers out there: are you as enchanted as me and can’t close the day without listening once again to this heavenly singing ?
This song was on my repertoire and I love the original by Paul Simon but Cassidy as she always does captures me every time with her genius and amazing compositions and her soulful deep singing and voice. Though I never met Cassidy I feel like a teenager falling in love every time I hear a song she does; her music touches deep places of my heart and soul and spirit; I love you Cassidy; your music still graces the earth.
Eva you are absolutely beautiful. You fill my heart with beautiful memories.
This song reminds me that somehow someway we do not suffer alone, that we all have a kindred spirit to help us, and the best thing we can do in life is to share who we are
+Patrick Lippert Well said, Patrick! There are many aspects of humanity that tie us all together. At certain points in our lives, we all travel down many similar roads.
+Patrick Lippert You'll never know how much this has touched me, especially at this time in my life. Will hold your words close to my heart as a touchstone of this moment. Thank you Patrick
I will always try to remember these words.
Thank you Patrick, I really needed to hear this. 💞
But even some of our loved ones don't like who we are and so we hide.
Thank You, ever, Eva Cassidy 🙏💐🙏
Who else is here from 2024?

I'm crying...there are no words...she touches you so deeply...just breath taking....thank god she shared her time with us
The amazing Eva Cassidy and her beautiful rendition of this song..she was a gift to all of us.
A very dreamy voice 😍
When I hear her, I weep in the loss of this angel voice, like prayer.
YES!!! :(
So beautiful song.
One of my all time favorite song - great composition
You know there is no great power at work when someone so great gets taken so early so beautiful voice of angel
The late Eva Cassidy, was one of the best cover artists I ever have encountered. I wished she had toured more for more exposure, an experience listening to her.
I wish she sang, "Little Wing"
no no no.......she was one of the best artists you ever heard period......never mind the cover tag........
Jay Alder... would have loved to see her live...but as a man...it would have been so tough to cry on every note 💗
@E.A. de Ruiter Indeed... the late and great Sir Terry Wogan
Cover artist? What kind of stupid phrase is that? That's kind of like calling Maria Callas a cover artist.
Can you imagine if she lived and married Paul Simon. What a couple that would have been
a gentle and soothing song from such a talented singer ..... gone too soon

what a great voice and talent, it's a shame she never reached the greatness she should have.

In the the times of Napster I ve load Eva Cassidy down! And I ve load it up as TH-cam was started! My mother was named Kathy and my son, his name is Danny! Apologize, when I save this and thx for sharing ❤I love her voice so much ❤❤

I've loved this S&G song for decades. Didn't expect to enjoy a cover; what a beautiful surprise !
what a beautiful song what a lovely singer
Agree. Her artistry with the guitar is wonderful.
Eva your music and legacy lives on. Gone but not forgotten
..
Every so often the world
is blessed with a rare jewel and Eva was certainly a shining star among them.
Having the same name and also a singer/songwriter I have admired her for many
years. She has been the warmth in my heart when days are cold and harsh. Whether
there is a Heaven or not, I personally can't believe her essence is just gone.
She resides in so many hearts, so her spirit lives on. Regarding any comments,
there should only be love, because Eva radiated love. So peace and love to all
those that find solace in her beautiful voice...
.
Hello Nice comment keep it up
Simple and lovely
This version of this song is one of the best songs i ever heard! What a talented woman and a shame for everyone she past away so early!
This beautiful soul and voice is my favorite. This world didn't deserve her.
"Kathy's Song"
I hear the drizzle of the rain
Like a memory it falls
Soft and warm, continuing
Tapping on my roof and walls
My mind's distracted and confused
My thoughts are many miles away
They lie with you when you're asleep
And kiss you when you start your day
And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain
There but for the grace of you go I
I love Eva's version, but I much prefer the original lyrics.
Yes, those lyrics are all good...one of the few simon songs I really like.@@raymond.duncan
Apart from the original and Eva Cassidys version... this one struck me hard. Great job capturing the emotions! Musik is the only universal language...
Just can't help listening to her unique, exquisite voice - time after time...
Hello Joan
Thank you Eva.....
SHE HAS THE VOICE OF AN ANGEL!! I’m sure she IS SINGING WITH THE ANGELS NOW....HER TRUE CALLING...I greatly miss her musical GIFT!!
An angel who came to Earth to grace us for too short a time.
